Kia ora tatou

We were so lucky with our weather on Autumn Festival day and we had perfect conditions for the outdoor

games. The older students were magnificent organising, leading and encouraging our younger children to

participate in the wide variety of games. I would like to thank you for providing a wonderful spread for our

shared lunch. It was lovely to see so much wholesome food on the tables. During the afternoon Nick provided

us with a wonderful Autumn story which entertained and delighted the whole audience and the students com-

pleted our day of celebrations with their beautiful singing and harmonies. A truly wonderful seasonal celebra-

tion!

Thank you to everyone who has returned their child’s Waldorf 100 sponsor forms. If you have not managed to

complete and return it yet it is not too late, we are still happy to accept sponsor forms early next term.

As the term draws to a close our dedicated teachers, joined by staff from Miro, Kowhai and Tui, are all off to a

conference at Michael Park Steiner School in Auckland from Saturday to Monday. We are all looking forward

to hearing the key note speaker Dr Stephen Sagarin opening with

cal workshops. A great way to stimulate thinking and conversation before heading off on our break to relax

and prepare for the forthcoming term.

I would like to bring your attention to the first of a series of short working bees starting at the beginning of Term

AUTUMN FESTIVAL We all started the autumn festival by assembling on the net ball court. Kerryn was telling the rules to the school about the games. Class 6 were the leaders of the teams this year. Students are told to always be encouraging to each other and support one another. The first activity was the parachute challenge, class 7 were

demonstrating on how to do it and how it works. The sec-ond activity was ‘hit the wicket’ and they have to use a dodge ball and try to hit the wicket. The third activity was an egg and spoon race. Rob and class 7 students were explaining the rules and demonstrating the activity. The next activity was the sack race where they have

to try and beat the other team by hopping. The fifth activi-ty was the lily pad and they have to use towels and try to get the bean bag to the hoop. The sixth activity was the pyramid where the students have to try and stay in that position for as long as they can. Next activity was the bean bag toss, where they have to try to get the bean

bag in the hoop. Lastly was the sponge tunnel, they have to try and get the sponge filled with water and try to get as much water as they can into the other bucket. Carys from class 6 told me she enjoyed the sponge tunnel. Class 4’s Gabrielle said hers was the bean bag toss. Amelia from class 2 told me she enjoyed the pyramid.

Dear Community,

Board of Trustees, Triennial Elections

Every three years, we have the opportunity to select a group of parents and caregivers to represent us on the school board of trustees. The board performs a number of important roles in the success of the school:

1) sets the strategic direction and long-term plans of the school

2) supports and evaluates the learning, progress and development of students

3) fulfills our obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi

4) appoints and supports the performance of the Principal

5) acts as a good employer for all our staff

Being a school trustee is a very important and rewarding role. Trustees are active leaders in our school and need to be able to work well in a team, ask challenging questions and have good communication skills. Having a board of trustees with a range of skills and experiences is important, however just as important is the motivation and commitment to making a positive difference to our children’s progress, learning and development.

If this sounds like you, I encourage you to complete a nomination form and put yourself forward to support our school and community. If this letter sparks your interest and you would like to know more, please feel free to con-tact me directly. If it’s not you, but you know of someone in the community you think would be ideal for the role, invite them to nominate themselves, or you can nominate them.

I look forward to meeting you.

Kind Regards,

Andrew McFadden

(Board Chair, on behalf of the board of trustees)

CLASSROOM CORNER

Class Four

The ten-year child begins to ‘step out’ into the world and is thirsty for challenges and new experiences. Their

new outlook on life can sometimes cause uncertainty, for example an unfounded fear of being away from

loved ones or a hesitancy to try something new. Helping them navigate these feelings and provide opportuni-

ties to ground them once more is an integral part of the Class Four curriculum.

As part of the ‘Our Place’ main lesson, children become more familiar with the geography of their locality.

They spend two nights away from home at the beautiful Pirongia Forest Park Lodge, a wooden cabin nestled

in the spectacular bush at the base of Pirongia maunga.

This year we had the most incredible weather, witnessing two breath-taking sunrises bathing the Waikato

basin with salmon-pink streaks of cloud, while gently burning off the low-lying wisps of fog. An array of hot-air

balloons hung majestically in the early morning air gently drifting across the valley – much to the delight of the

tamariki!

The children were excitable and eager to have a go at all that was on offer. The outdoor activities challenged

them in various ways and it was wonderful to witness the determination, perseverance and sheer grit of each

child as they pushed themselves to overcome their individual fears.

As with all EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) camps and trips there is an incredible amount of work

put in by the parents. A huge amount of thanks go to all the parents who drove children out to Pirongia and

back; contributed food (the menu was delicious), and stayed to help with the running and organisation of the

activities as well as sleeping in dorm rooms on ‘not so comfortable’ bunks!

A special mention to Regina who organised the menu and ran the kitchen so efficiently – thank you.

Earache in Children

Often it is a change in the weather that upsets the body's healthy warmth balance. A cold wind, damp fog or

heavy rain presents an extra challenge to the warmth organism of children. Their ears are quick to react, be-

cause without a head covering they are very exposed. In the cold days of autumn and winter, children should

never go outside without a hat. If the mucous membranes of the upper airways cool down too much, cold vi-

ruses have an easy time of it. The resulting swelling and inflammation of the ears are painful and extremely

unpleasant.

Onion to the rescue!

Onion Ear compress is simple and easy to apply use a regular cooking onion, then

Dice a small amount into pieces (about a small handful), wrap them in a piece of muslin cloth, or other thin

cloth to make a little onion bag. Tie off with string.

Lightly steam the little bag; the simplest way is to have a small pot with 3cm of water in it, cover the pot

with a small plate bring the water to the boil, steam the onion by placing onion bag on the plate and cover

with a lid.

Steam (just enough to loosen the juice) about 5min Apply to the affected ear- cover with a woollen hat-be careful not to apply too hot to the ear — we don’t

want a burn as well as an inflammation!

Ensure child is tucked up in a warm bed in a quiet room. Leave on for at least 20min but best if on over

night.
