FROM THE EDITORDoug Swanson–[email protected]
Happy Holidays to all! Welcome tothe December Flypaper. Being thegift-giving season, I have includedas many new products in this issueas space allowed. Whether you’reshopping for someone else oryourself, there are all kinds of newand exciting products to consider(or dream about). As you shop forhobby products, remember tosupport your local hobby shops.
2012 has been a year of mixedemotions for me. It started off withgreat news regarding the AMA75th Anniversary newslettercontest, which was entered in late2011. The results came out inJanuary, and I was informed thatwe came away with tophonors—wow.
In June the club was hit with someterrible news. I remember the callfrom Dan Rocha early one morningto inform me that Dan Knippenhad passed after a brief battle withlung cancer. Those of us in theIMAC community weredetermined to carry on andcontinue the contest Dan had runfor the past 18 years.
The year ended on a high note for
me with the Christmasparty. Not only did Icome away with a newairplane, I was also theproud recipient of theTop Gun award. Thanksto those existing TopGunners who bestowedsuch an honor on me.
In this issue:
Dale Gathman has shared thephotos he snapped at theChristmas party. See them on page6. He has also provided several“Shots From the Field”. See themon page 11. Thanks, Dale!
Armin Weber has shared theexperience of a full scale T-6 ride.See his photos and story on page10.
I’ll see you at the January meeting;unfortunately, I can’t make it out toFrozen Fingers.
Doug
Are you looking for a great way to kick off thenew year? Come on out to the field at 10:00am on January 1st for Frozen Fingers 2013.
Bring an aircraft to fly and try to be the “First inFlight” for 2013. Last year John Turner took thehonors and the trophy. Who will it be this year?

As 2012 comes to an end, so does my position as V.P. forthe FVAC. I will continue to be active with manyevents throughout the upcoming year, especially withthe SWAP and Festival of Flight. My thanks go to thecurrent B.O.D.’s and membership who have supportedmy role within the club. The club membershipcontinues to grow and our facility is one of the bestwithin the Midwest! Be sure to mark your calendar forthe annual SWAP being set up at the Kane CountyFairgrounds on February 23rd. Both Joe Pedone and I
have been working with various vendors and fellow RCenthusiasts to make this another successful event for the club. Asuggestion was brought up this fall to possibly look at having a“SWAP/Tailgate Event” at the flying field vs. the standard SWAP.It may reduce expenses and we can have people set up at the siteand charge a nominal fee—a different approach, but a good idea. Finally, our annual tradition continues on January 1st with the“First in Flight” competition. Bring your plane and coffee as wewatch fellow members fight the cold and wind to claim the trophyin 2013.
Again, thank you to the board andmembership for allowing me toserve as your V.P.
Happy Holidays,
JT

Armin Weber recently went for a ride in a T-6 Texan. Below is a briefaccount of his experience, along with a few photos from the day.
The flight was with Gauntlet Warbirds, based at Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove [www.gauntletwarbirds.com].They offer rides and training in several airplanes including the T-6 Texan, L-39, Extra 300, Yak-52, andDecathlon. Being a big warbird fan, I was looking forward to a ride in the T-6 Texan.
The experience begins with a briefing that describes the airplane, and flight from takeoff to landing, plussome very brief instructions on how to use the parachute. Prior to being buckled into the rear seat, the pilotsaid if we need to jump out for any reason, jump toward the trailing edge of the wing. That way you won’tbe cut in half by the stabilizer after leaving the plane. Good info, I thought to myself.
The engine was started and we were off. Shortly after takeoff, I was given control of the airplane and we flewto our practice area. We spent the remainder of the flight doing loops, barrel rolls, 4- and 8-point rolls, andCuban 8's. All to soon, we were headed back to the airport where we did a pass over the runway, followedby a breaking turn and landing.
It was an awesome experience, and I’d definitely do it again. -Armin10

Field Chairman Greg Bohlerhad a good turnout to button up thefield for the winter. Power to the left3 bays of the Juice Bar will be leftoperational during the winter to seehow well it survives. Greg alsomentioned that we do not plow theroad or parking area during thewinter however if anyone has a plowand is so inclined their efforts will beappreciated. One important note isthat the runways are NOT to beplowed. Plowing caused wind rowswhich have a tendency to drawairplanes like a magnet.
Newsletter Editor Doug Swanson thanked everyone for theircontributions and encouraged us to keep submitting articles, building tips, etc..Doug also noted that the special election edition will be coming out soon andany candidates wanting to submit a Bio need to have it in ASAP.
