WECLOME TO 2019!!!!

HaPpY NeW YeAr !!!!

The Four Corners Unit wishes one and all a very happy and healthy New Year filled with joy, peace, friendship and gratitude!

We are all so thankful for our Airstream family. I know I’m not alone when I say I’m so grateful for our wonderful community. From the moment we contacted Terry Rich through the Airforums letting him know we were new to rv’ing, that we had bought one and had no clue what to do, he had us promise to attend a rally 7 days later and were welcomed by endless men and women eager to guide, help, advise and support our new adventure.

Theres nothing like walking around a campground, “stalking” out AS in hopes of great conversation or even a tour of a new renovation! A recent encounter showed off an sauna and stainless bathtub/shower! Sometimes, we even find new Airstreamers like we were and who become 4CUers and lifelong friends!

We know you do this, too! The connections we have among those we hold dear in our 4CU family as well as each new one we make on the road, always make us appreciate how lucky we are to be enjoying this community.

Let’s look forward to 2019 with bright eyes, glissinging rigs and outshining thoughts for each other.

l Keep the shiny side up!!

As the popularity of RVing grows, we find it necessary to plan rallies and tie down venues further in advance than ever before. As a result, our 2019 rally schedule has already shaped up nicely… check out the Rally Page on the 4CU website ( https://fourcornersunit.com/rallies.html ) to see what’s on the docket. If you are interested in a particular rally, please keep an eye on the website and your email in-box as registration information is released for each rally.

We are a large unit with 214 Full Members and 83 Affiliates = 287 member rigs (at this writing), making it important that you sign up for rallies as soon as you can after the opening of registration. With more members anxious to sign up for rallies, not everyone will get into some rallies because of limited space at venues, etc.

The solution to this reality is not to have bigger rallies, but to have more rallies, giving everyone a chance to participate. This is our goal. So if you have a rally idea, please let us know and we will assist in exploring, scheduling and planning a rally. And if not for 2019, look forward to 2020! (It’s not too early.) If you have comments about our rallies or how you’d like to see them develop, please weigh in. We are always looking for ways to improve our gatherings.

I am looking forward to serving the Unit during 2019, my last year as your President. With your help, my goals are to continue on with membership development so that our Unit will continue to attract new members — and to serve the membership through expanded rally opportunities.

It’s important to remember and acknowledge that besides having great rallies, a huge part of what attracts new members is the overall attitude of our membership — and that means you. It’s your friendliness, it’s your positive attitude, it’s your warm welcomes, it’s your acceptance of diversity, and it’s your fun spirit. In short it’s you. That’s what makes this Unit special. I hear it all the time: “The 4CU is the fun unit, right?” And that’s all because of you. Word is out! And now we have a reputation to maintain!

I am so proud to be a part of the Four Corners Unit! Here’s to another great year of happy gatherings, continued good times, and Airstreams gathering to shine together.

Happy New Year, and travel safe…

Happy New Year!

As we step into a brand new year, our 2019 Board of Directors is in place. A big thanks goes to Britt Quisenberry who has served a 2-year term as 4CU Trustee. Britt’s successor is Alan Rose from Gunnison, CO, who began his 2-year term as Trustee on 15 December 2018. Welcome, Alan! We have a great Board, and it’s going to be an equally great year!

and jump in? You won’t regret it! We all look forward to seeing you around the 4CU campfire as soon and as

often as possible.

Will You Help Welcome New 4CU Members? We have a small group of members who have volunteered to send welcome email notes to new members as they join. You can be part of that effort. If you’d like to help, drop Terry Rich a note at [email protected]. You will then be CC’d as each new member welcome letter goes out. Just follow up with a personal welcome note of your own at your leisure.

This is an easy but important way to help with membership. Reaching out to new members makes a world of difference to them! The best thing you can do to keep the 4CU strong is to help new members to get involved and help them get acquainted with other members. We all know how hard it is to join a new group not knowing anyone. This is a chance to ease someone’s way to being a new friend right at the get-go!

You Can Host a 4CU Rally!Yes, it takes work. Yes, it takes planning. And YES you can do it!

And you will not be alone. We can help and provide guidance and support. And voilá —before you know it, you’re a seasoned rally host!

The 4CU Rally Guidelines can be found on the 4CU website at: https://fourcornersunit.com/rally-planning-guidelines.html

Think about it. Consider building a new rally around a holiday, an event or just a great place to have a rally. It all works.

Let us know what you are thinking! Even if it’s outside the box. (We like outside the box!)

Some of our rally “hosts with the most”!

Thank you <3

WHERE WE WANDER: A new column about our favorite campsites and stops along the way!

KARCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK, Benson, aZ

The only disapointment here is that there is no group

camping area because this would be a place for

an epic rally. But if you’d like to get together with

friends, this is a beautiful campground! And if you ‘ve

never visited this State Park, you must put it on your

bucket list. Besides being a naitonal treasure, the

amazing story behind this discovery is phenomenal!

Only open a select number of months due to the

bat population, plan your stay around visiting the

caverns. Take both tours if possible. As for campsites,

no site is a bad site and they even have 4 cabins if

you’d like your non-camper friends to join you!

There are hiking trails on site as well as the wonderful

Discovery Center. The small town of Benson with a

Safeway and Walmart is 15 minutes away.

Each site has electric and water. A dual dump is

on the property and, just like most AZ State Parks,

the community bathrooms and showers are

immacculate.

The park is also an International Night Sky Park so the

stars abound!!!

Ever get ready to reserve a spot in a new campground and the Google Earth overview just doesn’t help out

your decision making. “It looked flat when I saw it on line but then it was tiered like olive groves in Italy!”

Or you’d love to find the local spot for the perfect taco or tri tip! “Those cool places were right along our routes

but we just didn’t see them!”

You’ve reserched the blogs by other travelers but they just haven’t gone where you are going?

Here’s an opportunity to find the level site or the one with the better view you’ve been seaching for!

Let’s share what we know! A little blurb is all we need ... and a quick email address for inquiring minds!)

(Remember, the info can’t always come from me and the board!!!)

Registration form included. If you plan on attending please complete form and submit with rally payment NLT February 14, 2019. There is a limit of 20 rigs for the rally. Please sign up quickly if you don’t want to end up on a wait list.

Con mucho gusto, after popular demand you are invited to once again join your 4CU compadres for the BPVC19 rally at Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus, NM just 4 miles north of the Mexico United States border. The rally coincides with an annual local event, the Binational Pancho Villa Cavalcade of Horses Extravaganza which occurs every March in Columbus NM, and neighboring Las Palomas Mexico. The Cavalcade begins in Mexico where several hundred riders comprising the Cabalgata (Cavalry) ride to Las Palomas, and then on to Columbus NM. Some travel for a week or more to be rewarded with celebrations in both Las Palomas and Columbus. (see itinerary for more details)

As is the rally tradition we will congregate and use the south end of the park for our rally. The adjacent group shelter has been reserved for our exclusive use on March 7th , 8th, and 9th. Most sites have both water and electric and there is a dump station in the park. This year’s venue provides for a four or five-night stay with early and late arrivals being acceptable. Word of caution though, we expect this to be an EXTREMELY BUSY time for Pancho Villa State Park. Camp sites will be in high demand so getting there early is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. Later arrivals may have to do some dry camping due to limited site availability.

If you require an electrical hook up and have not already done so contact the park now and attempt to reserve a site. Unfortunately, all of these were reserved when I checked site reservations earlier this week. ( site map ) 1 Since space is limited in the park we find it necessary to limit participation to 20 rigs. Please sign up quickly as registrations2 will

be accepted on a first come, first served basis. A wait list will be established as soon as the 20-rig limit is achieved.

We are planning the rally to start on Wednesday March 6th with early arrivals on Tuesday March 5th. Based on our experience’s in 2018 a few attendees had to set up at water only sites, and a couple had to dry camp. Essentially the park was full as of mid-day on Wednesday. The Park Rangers allowed us to dry camp behind the south shower facility and along the East and South access roads. We assume that will be the case in 2019.

You are responsible for your own camping fees of $14 per night for hook up sites, and $10 for dry camping. Upon arrival at the park please stop and pick up a payment envelope at either the entrance kiosk or payment station in front of the south shower facility and proceed to the area of the west of the south group shelter. Dorothy, Christa, AC and Ed will be checking in arrivals and providing any last minute need to know type information. If necessary, you may want to first empty your holding tanks. The dump station is in the middle of the park illustrated on the center, left part of the park map below sites 8, 9, and 10.

For PV State Park newbies, most of the sites have Ramada’s. Interesting fact is that their placement on the site, in reference to the location of your actual Airstream hook ups may require you to park your AS with your door on the opposite side of the Ramada. Essentially the park hook ups, orientation wise are “bass ackwards” from what you would normally expect, especially on the east and west sides of the park. It’s a bit of an inconvenience but does not present a safety issue. If your preference is to have the AS door face the Ramada than a long water hose and electrical cord extension can easily resolve the issue. This is a WBCCI rally. WBCCI members are welcome to attend. Non-Member Airstream owners may attend as guests by contacting the rally hosts to make arrangements.” The Wagon Masters, & Head Wranglers are asking for some rally support/help with a call out for volunteers to:

• Bring a bottle of wine, vodka or tequila to share at our happy hours in lieu of a snack, sweets, or appetizer. Traditionally, while alcohol is common and totally acceptable at 4CU rallies, the unit cannot provide alcohol as a matter of potential liability. Consequently, any alcohol made available to attendees should be privately donated rather than provided by the unit. (see daily agenda for more details)

• Bring some firewood.

Details of the agenda are developing day by day. We will send more information as the rally draws nearer. Below is a preliminary agenda for the rally. The Capitol Reef 4CU Rally will be held on May 10th thru the 15th at Thousand Lakes RV Park in Torrey UT This rally immediately follows the Moab 3 Rally being held at the ACT Campground in Moab from May 6th thru May 10th . Ed and Christa Whitney are the Wagon Masters, Alan and Marsha Rose are helping them out as Head Wranglers. There are a number of firsts associated with the Capitol Reef Rally.

• First time the 4CU has had a rally • In South Central UT, and specifically at Thousand Lakes RV Park • That is back to back with another rally, in this case Moab 3 (at least in recent history) • Over Mother’s Day week end, can’t you just feel the excitement brewing • With a venue featuring Capitol Reef NP, a very, very large NP in South Central UT • With opportunities to truly get into a large NP and drive around. There are numerous

opportunities to drive thru Capitol Reef, do some off roading if so inclined, and ford a river or two. Just keep in mind that it is a very big NP

First timers or folks who have not visited Southern UT in a while should watch this Sean & Christy Michael YouTube Video. Warning it is a 25-minute video but well worth it. Thousand Lakes RV Park is located in Torrey Utah a stone’s throw from Capitol Reef NP. If you are unfamiliar with the area, I strongly suggest you open your atlas and then follow the hyper link and review all of the information tabs on the park’s website. Their services along with what to do info are extremely comprehensive and frankly it is one of the best RV Parks we have stayed at with our Airstream. This actual link will open up with the Area Guide tab which can be a valuable planning resource to map out your personal agenda if you decide to attend this rally. Please sign up quickly as soon as the rally registration is opened. This will be a popular rally and we expect the rig limit of 27 to be hit quickly. Thousand Lakes is a good-sized park and we have reserved 27 sites for this 4CU Rally. Specifically, sites 23-49 are reserved and can be viewed on the site/park map. All sites are full hook up; # 23-39 have 30/50-amp service, site #30, & #40-49 have 30-amp service. There is a Group Shelter/Pavilion just South of these sites in the area referenced as the horseshoe pit on the site map. The pavilion has been reserved for our use from May 10th – May 14th. The shower facility and laundry are directly East of those sites. The park office has an extensive inventory, gift shop, and you get propane there as well, both 20- and 30-gallon tanks. People attending will be required to make their own site reservations directly with Thousand Lakes RV Park. You will also do this on line at the Thousand Lakes website. NOTE: Please do NOT make your site reservations until you receive confirmation from the Roses that your registration has been logged and accepted. When you call to make reservations, be sure to let them know you are with the Airstream group. The park is closed from October till April 1st; however, they are still taking reservation during this time frame. This is a WBCCI rally. WBCCI members are welcome to attend. Non-Member Airstream owners may attend as guests by contacting the rally hosts to make arrangements.” More information with Venue/Agenda, Registration details will be provided in the formal announcement which will be posted on the 4CU Website and distributed via email blast the first week of January. Feel free at any time to reach out to Ed Whitney at [email protected] with any questions you may have. Suffice it to say there will be some really fun social events for the group and plenty of time allowed for sightseeing. Consideration is also being given to have a Caravan from Moab to Torrey for those attending both Rallies. It is a short 3-hour drive under normal conditions between both locations. If you plan on registering for the rally, please do NOT make your site reservations until you receive confirmation from the Roses that your registration has been logged and accepted. When you call to make reservations, be sure to let them know you are with the Airstream group.
