Special Tribute to His Excellency Ambassador Jose Maria Chaves, Founding Member of the

FPCD International Advisory Board and Mrs. Elena Chaves

It is with a heavy heart that the FPCD announced the passing of Ambassador Chaves, followed

by his beloved wife Elena six months later. They were both no strangers to world politics,

diplomacy or humanitarianism. Their children and grandchildren will continue their legacy as

will the FPCD. Ambassador Jose Maria Chaves; human being extraordinaire; philanthropist;

mentor; friend. His guidance and insight will be sorely missed.

Ambassador and Mrs. Jose Maria Chaves were highly regarded in the international diplomatic

community. The photo above depicts the Ambassador with then President and Mrs. Jimmy

Carter at the White House in 1977.

January

Ermera District, Timor-Leste: A Symbol of Appreciation

Executive Director, Claudia Abate planted trees in Ermera District, Timor-Leste on 11 January

2009, in honour of FPCD supporters and for each member of the FPCD team. The baby saplings

are a lasting contribution to President Jose Ramos Horta's Reforestation and Family Income

Project and serve as a symbol of her gratitude and FPCD's commitment to developing countries.

Success in Timor-Leste: SOLS 24/7 Youth Center is visited by FPCD Executive Director

and the President of Timor-Leste's National Parliament

Executive Director of the Foundation for Post Conflict Development, Claudia Abate, and

President of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste, His Excellency Fernando "Lasama" de

Araujo, visited the successful SOLS 24/7 Youth Center in Fatu Hada, Dili whereby hundreds of

local youth are trained in computer skills, life skills and English language classes. Founded in

2000, SOLS 24/7 is a youth run program that offers a comprehensive two-year training and

boarding program on life-skills education for disadvantaged and at-risk youths from poor

communities. Providing equal opportunities for boys and girls, the program has made it a policy

to accept the same number of male and female students. In the recent graduation, 52 percent of

those who received their diplomas/certificates are girls.

The Foundation for Post Conflict Development was invited to speak at the United Nations by the

Department of Public Information/ NGO Section, on a Panel entitled, “Sustainable Peace through

Reconciliation” in honour of the UN 2009 International Year of Reconciliation. The FPCD

Executive Director’s speech is on the FPCD website and also on webcast on the United Nations

Website.

His Excellency President Jose Ramos-Horta Visits Whole Foods in New York City

Accompanied by FPCD Executive Director, President Jose Ramos-Horta visited Whole Foods in

Union Square New York because of their dedication to corporate social responsibility and their

commitment to assisting countries like Timor-Leste, by educating their customers and offering

them the opportunity to donate to targeted community programmes.

FPCD Launches Green Community Hub Project in South Africa in Partnerships with

Hands on the World Global

FPCD’s donation will make part of Hands on the World (HOW) Global efforts to create their

third school village project called a “Green Community Hub” that will allow the Umgodi

Primary School of 600 students and the surrounding village of over 1,500 people to have access

to running water. HOW Global is founded by Rachael Paulson.

The United Nations Requests FPCD to support the Iraqi Women's Fellowship Foundation

The United Nations Office for Partnerships has asked the FPCD to support the urgent need to

build the capacity of Iraqi Women. The FPCD is pleased to offer its support and expertise to the

Iraqi Women's Fellowship Foundation (IWFF).

The FPCD and IWFF are committed to education as a crucial mechanism to sustainable

development and toward fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals. The IWFF plays a

pivotal role with engineering and applied sciences skills by providing Iraqi women with access to

top-rated United States universities in the US and the Middle East. Participating universities

include Berkeley, Stanford, UC San Diego, Smith College, Carnegie Mellon and Texas A&M in

Qatar. Women in post conflict situations are bearers of greater responsibilities in their homes and

communities and have a vital role to play in rebuilding the economy. Iraq has a cadre of well

educated women but more are needed to be prepared for their role in the country's recovery.

The FPCD and The Guerrera Book Project Formally Join Efforts

The Guerrera Book Project aims to amplify the individual and collective voices of Guerreras:

women who have taken up arms for a cause. These women tend to be under-represented and

underserved by reconciliation and development intervention programs, and may have lost or

jeopardized their social safety net as a result of breaching strict local gender roles. From El

Salvador to Vietnam, from East Timor to Senegal, women have played critical roles in armed

struggles for social justice. The purpose of this multi-year, multi-country project is to empower

women in conflict and post conflict situations and to assist them in claiming due recognition and

recompense for their contributions and sacrifices. By engaging the oft-overlooked individual

experience of participating in violence, this project both supports and informs efforts for a just

and lasting peace with dignity. The stories are as distinct as the women themselves, yet each

account contains valuable insight into the forces and counter-forces shaping our world. The

Project Co-Directors, Julie Michelle Klinger and Emma Gaalaas Mullaney ( pictured above with

Timorese “Guerreras”), work and conduct research in Asia and the Americas on policies and

practices concerning rural and indigenous rights, with a focus on vulnerable peoples who are

underrepresented in international, national and local development and reconstruction programs.

The FPCD Supports the UN Global Compact and Corporate Social Responsibility

In the spirit of the United Nations Global Compact, the FPCD honours Mr. Garret Marquis and

Ms. Tina Cho of SunGard parent company of Assent LLC for becoming a top Foundation donor!

Assent LLC is an industry leader and one of the largest, most experienced firms within the direct

access marketplace. They provide state-of-the art customized trading systems, as well as premier

Report from FPCD Sub-Saharan Africa Legal Analyst and UNICTR Intern(United

Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda)

The FPCD Sub-Saharan Africa Legal Analyst, Joseph Stefanelli is currently focusing his

international law studies on rule of law in post-conflict developing nations, especially post-

genocide Rwanda as a UN legal intern for ICTR where he continues his research from December

2008 till present on Rwandan court systems and rule of law in the Sub-Saharan Africa. Mr.

Stefanelli’s research is posted on the FPCD website.

Briefing at Italian Mission on Global Health Issues and Harvard Maternal Health Report

facilitated by FPCD

FPCD has been working with Harvard Medical School and MIT, under the stewardship of Dr.

Jeff Blander, also founder of the Bienmoyo Foundation. A dedicated course researched the

maternal health care options available to Timor-Leste with an emphasis on the success of the

Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinic. In 2010 a site visit will be conducted as relations between

FPCD supports Ambassador Wenaweser of Liechtenstein’s charity soccer match for war-

affected regions

FPCD International Advisory Board Member Ambassador Christian Wenaweser (pictured above

second from the left with Founder of Play 31) participated in a soccer match to support children

in war-affected regions by promoting the sport as a pathway to peace. The game co-organized by

Ambassador Wenaweser and Ambassador Heraldo Muñoz of Chile featured Team Liechtenstein

vs. Team Chile. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon also took part in the game (pictured above

right with FPCD Director of Public Relations, Arielle Messuti).

One Year Anniversary of the Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinic celebrated on World

Malaria Day in Same, Timor-Leste; FPCD Executive Director asked to convey message

from Prince Albert II of Monaco

Executive Director of the Foundation for Post Conflict Development, Ms. Claudia Abate, was

asked to convey a message from Prince Albert II of Monaco to the authorities in Timor-Leste,

whereby she shared Prince Albert II of Monaco's fond memories of the inauguration of the

Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinic in Same District, Timor-Leste. Dressed in traditional clothes,

Ms. Abate read the message from Prince Albert II of Monaco in the Timorese local language -

Tetum. The message was well received and was followed by the presentation of photos and a

photo album of the April 19 2008 Celebrations. The Community in Same, Timor-Leste are very

grateful for the kind assistance of Prince Albert II and the Principality of Monaco. They will

never forget that the day of Prince Albert's visit coincided with the wedding anniversary of His

Parents: Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace of Monaco. Accompanied by Timor-Leste's

Minister of Health, Dr. Nelson Martins and Dr. Jaime Sarmento of the Ministry of Health,

commemorations were held with tradition and hundreds of women and children who benefited

from the Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinic.

FPCD Donates Supplies for the Reforestation and Family Income Project in Timor-Leste

FPCD Executive Director, Claudia Abate and FPCD Dili Advisor, Fatimazohra Nouinou brought

gardening supplies to the community of Ermera District, Timor-Leste where the Reforestation

and Family Income Project is implemented. These tools will help create food-security and

environmental sustainability through this long-term community programme.

FPCD Participates at World Civic Forum "Building our Humanitarian Planet" in Seoul,

South Korea

The Foundation for Post Conflict Development is pleased to have been represented at the World

Civic Forum by Director of Special Projects, David W. Gethings. He was invited to present his

paper about the Millennium Development Goals and Timor-Leste. Along with presenting his

paper in the session "Legal Rules and Social Norms for MDGs", he was also asked to speak at an

UNDESA panel on Poverty and Hunger. While at the WCF, Mr. Gethings met with individuals

from academia and civil society.

Becora Youth Center Visited by FPCD Dili Advisor

FPCD Dili Advisor Fatimazohra Nouinou visited the FPCD/Fundacao Xanana Gusmao Becora

Youth Center. Music, volleyball and computer activities are currently underway for the

community youth. It is thanks to the United Nations Staff 1% for Development Fund that the

establishment of the Becora Youth Center was made possible.

The UN Staff 1 % for Development Fund has awarded FPCD a second grant to create new

Youth Center in Timor-Leste thanks to supporter Maria Salma

Thanks to the generous support of FPCD supporter Maria Salma, a former UN Staff Member,

FPCD was awarded a second grant to create another youth center in Viqueque District. Ms.

Salma also provided generous support for computers for the Youth Center and 2 Kitchen

Gardens. FPCD is most grateful for these generous and humanitarian contributions.

FPCD invited to participate in Olympic Forum in Lausanne, Switzerland

FPCD Executive Director, Claudia Abate was invited to represent the FPCD at International

Olympic Truce Foundation (IOTF) and the IOC’s International Relations Commission, the

Forum on 7 and 8 May 2009. The Forum brought together representatives of the Olympic family,

governmental and non-governmental institutions, UN agencies, and educational institutions. The

FPCD commended the International Olympic Committee for the hosting Forum because it

provided a unique occasion to exchange experiences and opinions on how sport can contribute to

development, peace and national cohesion, with an emphasis on sport’s contribution to achieving

the Millennium Development Goals, amongst other objectives.

FPCD Associate Research Scholar Michaela Hertkorn announces children's book, “Little

Cloud Upset”

The children’s picture book will introduce preschoolers and young children to aspects of

international relations and global affairs. Issues, such as human rights, the environment, refugee

situations, war and peace are discussed and illustrated in an age-appropriate way. The central

character is a little cloud that travels, as a neutral observer, across the globe observing all sorts of

global challenges. The cloud flies across melting ice caps in the polar region, watches children

play in refugee camps and remembers witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago, an

event that fundamentally changed this world and drew millions of people around the globe closer

together. And though the book highlights problematic issues, it emphasizes the importance of

cooperation and that through individual actions we can change a lot for the better. FPCD is

promoting Little Cloud Upset through public marketing, as well as endeavoring to make it

available at the United Nations book store.

FPCD participates in United Nations Countdown to International Day of Peace

The FPCD published on its official website support for Mayor Akiba of Hiroshima, President of

Mayors for Peace by calling attention to the 100 Day Countdown to the International Day of

Peace. This year the United Nations focused the International Day of Peace on Nuclear

Disarmament. Mayor Akiba asked all members of civil society to come together for this

important observance and to learn more about how and why we must take action to end this

serious threat to our global security by visiting the Mayors for Peace website.

FPCD publishes statement by the Chair of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the

PeaceBuilding Commission

Continual education about and promotion of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission is

found on the FPCD official website. The FPCD called on all actors to support the statement of

the Chair of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration and requested supporters to read the statement.

Annual Board Meeting

As per the FPCD by-laws, annual meetings of the Board of Directors occur once a year in June.

FPCD Receives Official Recognition as Associated with the Department of Public

Information of the United Nations

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the Department of Public Information

(DPI) approved the Foundation for Post Conflict Development for association with the UN

Department. The Committee met to consider new applications for an initial two-year period and

approved the FPCD for association. The FPCD's association constitutes a commitment to

disseminate information and raise public awareness about the purposes and activities of the

United Nations and issues of global concern. The FPCD's engagement in UN activities such as

conferences, seminars, briefings, and other events will assist in the creation of global

partnerships for development. The FPCD will be represented at the United Nations and be

allowed to participate in advancing the agenda of the United Nations Charter. The FPCD will

keep the DPI/NGO Relations Department informed of the Foundation's activities and

publications to this end.

Monaco, in Singapore

FPCD Executive Director, Claudia Abate in capacity as Project Coordinator of the Monaco Red

Cross presented a slideshow and remarks entitled Monaco is synonymous with Humanitarian

Action: An overview of Projects in Timor-Leste at the Raffles Hotel, Singapore on the Occasion

of the 4th Anniversary of the Ascension to the Throne of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of

Monaco. The event was organized by Monaco’s Honorary Consul in Singapore, Madame Jacky

Deromedi, with the participation of the Little Singers of Monaco.

An Evening to Benefit The Foundation for Post Conflict Development

A fundraising event was held at a private residence in New York City to raise public awareness

and funds to help achieve the goals of the foundation. Executive Director called in from Dili,

Timor-Leste to talk to supporters and thank them for their participation.

Elections in Kurdistan FPCD International Advisory Board Member Tanya Goudsouzian, a Journalist and Founding

Editor of SOMA Digest, reports on elections in Kurdistan: "On July 25, nearly 2.5 million

registered voters in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region will be heading to the polls to cast

their ballots in the presidential and parliamentary elections." A pivotal step towards

peacebuilding, the election offers hope for continued development in Kurdistan. In an effort to

educate about the issues facing post conflict regions, FPCD posts excerpt and link to full article.

On the 10 Year Anniversary of the United Nations Led Referendum in Timor-Leste and

the 30 Year Anniversary of Refugee Camp Visit, Princess Grace Medals and Princess

Grace Maternity Clinic is Announced

Special Envoy of Prince Albert II of Monaco, Madame Jacky Deromedi made her first visit to

Timor-Leste to participate in Anniversary activities. Madame Deromedi also made remarks on

behalf of Prince Albert II, at the side of Timor-Leste's Parliament President, His Excellency

Fernando Lasama de Araujo, announcing the gift of the Princess Grace of Monaco Maternity

Clinic to be built in Oeucussi and a Princess Grace Medals Programme to honour members of

Timor-Leste’s international solidarity movement in the spirit of Princess Grace. Madame

Deromedi also explained that it is the wish of Prince Albert II to stand by Timor-Leste in

solidarity and friendship now and in the future.

Monaco-funded Reforestation Project featured at Timor-Leste Trade Fair

On the occasion of the 10th

Anniversary of the UN Led referendum, the Reforestation and

Family Income Project team set up a demonstration tent to educate visitors about the success of

the programme. The Team from Ermera Timor-Leste, proudly display their banner honoring

Monaco's support of 100% organic produce.

FPCD Supports the Call for an International Decade of Reconciliation

FPCD supports the call to action of the Foundation for Subjective Experience and Research

(S.E.R. Foundation), represented by Judge Felicitas Hoffmann of the District Court of

Duesseldorf, Germany. Having fostered the dedication of the Year 2009 as the International Year

of Reconciliation, the Foundation's NGO Representative to the UN, Judge Hoffmann is in the

process of calling on Member States to extend this initiative into the decade of 2011-2020.

FPCD Invests in our Common Future: Healthy Women, Healthy Children UN High Level

Event Co-Chaired by the United Kingdom

FPCD aligns itself with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and World Bank President Robert

Zoellick who co-chaired a special panel focusing on the commitment of the Task force on

Innovative International Financing for Health Systems. Participants proposed innovative

measures to finance health programs and committed to a formal ‘Consensus for Maternal,

Newborn and Child Health (MNCH)’ presented by the WHO Director General, Dr Margaret

Chan. The FPCD commended this initiative and plays its part to improve MNCH through the

creation of the Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinic and future Princess Grace Maternity Clinic.

French Climber Sophie Dennis takes FPCD to top of Mt. Pisco in Peru

Sophie Dennis is the first woman in the world to climb the 'Crudita' route of Pisco and the first

woman to climb the south face of Pisco. FPCD’s flag was part of her world record, joining her

amazing feat of climbing Mt. Everest in 2008 with the FPCD flag too!

Toward a Society of All Ages

The FPCD works toward fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals for all persons, young

and old, in the context of post conflict situations. The FPCD took the opportunity to join the

Secretary General of the United Nations in commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the

International Year for Older Persons: Toward a Society of All Ages. The Secretary-General’s

message is posted on FPCD Website.

Thanks to CafePress.com, FPCD has its own on-line store where supporters can shop for fun

gear with a percentage of the sale returning to FPCD as a charitable donation.

FPCD International Advisory Board member Ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant’ Agata

presented his credentials to President Barack Obama as Ambassador of Italy to the United

States of America

The FPCD is certain that with Ambassador Terzi's experience, valor and dedication, the relations

between Italy and the United States will reach new plateaus. Ambassador Terzi joined the FPCD

International Advisory Board in 2008 while he was Ambassador, Permanent Representative of

Italy to the United Nations. With this recent promotion, Ambassador Terzi brings new prestige

to the work of the FPCD in the 4 priority areas: Women, Youth, Environment and Veterans.

International day of non violence

FPCD publishes UN Secretary-General's Message on Int'l Day of Non-Violence and encourages

readership of message through the FPCD website or the United Nations website. Non-violence is

an integral part to creating a sustainable post conflict environment.

FPCD announces the success of the Victor Valley Expedition to Timor-Leste

TIMOR-LESTE TRAVELOGUE by expedition member Barbara Lester is posted on FPCD

website. The scientific expedition organized Dr. Hinrich Kaiser ( pictured above teaching a

Timorese student how to preserve samples) of Victor Valley College’s Tropical Research

Institute and facilitated by FPCD resulted in the finding of 10 new species in Timor-Leste. Work

will continue in 2010.

– a clear contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals as relates to

improvement in Maternal and Infant Mortality and access to basic health care services.

FPCD Executive Director speaks at Columbia University: Monaco and The Foundation for

Post Conflict Development: An overview of Health –related projects in Timor-Leste

FPCD Executive Director Claudia Abate was invited to make an address at Columbia

University Medical School by the Global Health and Human Rights Forum.The presentation

focused on achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals through community-

based projects. With the support of the Principality of Monaco success has been seen through

the Prince Rainier III Maternity Clinics as well as through reforestation programmes that

promote the diversification of nutritional intake. FPCD Advisor and Columbia Medical School

Student Ivan Kotchetkov organized the event.

Office of International Cooperation and Development Newsletter

The Principality of Monaco has been at the side of FPCD since its founding and therefore

FPCD’s supporters are encouraged to sign-up to receive the informative newsletters from the

Office of Monaco’s International Cooperation.

The FPCD supported the initiative of the feature length documentary entitled "The End of

Poverty"

The film opened for one week in New York City on November 13 2009, narrated by Martin

Sheen, featuring John Perkins, Joseph Stiglitz and others. The documentary discusses the reasons

why the global economic system has failed to spread wealth more evenly and why hard work

does not lift people out of poverty. FPCD participated and attended the opening event.

New FPCD International Advisory Board Member Appointed

The FPCD appointed Dr. Hinrich Kaiser to the International Advisory Board. Dr. Kaiser has

been involved in international education and environmental research since the early 1980s. He

places high value on education in biology within a cultural context, since such knowledge will

lead to decisions that are right for both people and their environment. After educational stops in

Germany, Canada, the Philippines, and the United States for studies and teaching, and after

travels in well over 100 nations, Dr Hinrich Kaiser currently works as a biology professor at

Victor Valley College in Victorville, California, USA.

Envoy of Prince Albert II, Madame Jacky Deromedi visit Timor-Leste a second time

In the course of Madame Jacky Deromedi’s second visit to Timor-Leste, The Prince’s Envoy

was able to become more familiar with communities in which the FPCD in partnership with

Monaco are working. Briefings with the Reforestation Team were held, meeting with Timor’s

leadership, participation in the official Human Rights Day Celebrations and a visit to the remote

enclave district of Oecussi were on the agenda. In Oecussi, site of the future Princess Grace

Maternity Clinic, Madame Deromedi was dressed as an Oecussi Princess( pictured above left).

Participation at Generations for Peace Camp in Amman, Jordan

FPCD Executive Director met with Founder and Chairman of Generations For Peace and

President of the Jordan Olympic Peace Committee, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan in

solidarity towards the world’s need for greater tolerance and understanding between

communities. Generations For Peace uses sport to empower leaders of youth to act as agents of

change to help instill tolerance, understanding and ultimately peace. A group of 10 Timorese

youth leaders participated in the Generations for Peace Camp in Amman Jordan. (Pictured above

present in her capacity as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste).
