With a Latin motto like ‘In Loco Delicioso’,
which means ‘in a pleasant place’, you just
know living in today’s Cricklade is going to
be wonderful. The busy High Street and it’s
environs offer you a selection of welcoming
pubs, cafes and restaurants, plus a Tesco store.
The town boasts two large nature reserves,
North Meadow, which preserves some 80%
of Britain’s wild Snake’s Head Fritillaries and
is situated between the rivers Thames and
the Churn; and Blakehill, which was once a
disused airfield but has been converted into a
meadow by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. There’s
a highly popular town festival held every June
for you to enjoy, as well.
With a charming museum, a choice of well
renowned schools (three within a third of a
mile of The Forty!) and good transport links,

From the 9th century Anglo Saxons onward,
history has left its indelible mark on the small,
vibrant and characterful town of Cricklade in
the north Wiltshire countryside.
Sat on Old Father Thames and situated
midway between Swindon and Cirencester,
Cricklade was founded where a famous Roman
road called Ermin Street crossed the great
river. It was the home of a Saxon royal mint
and the centre of the town still lies within the
former walls of the Saxon stronghold built by
Alfred the Great. In fact, many of the present
buildings can be dated between the 11th and
16th centuries.

Living in Cricklade, you can do it all or do
nothing at all. Stay local and enjoy an explore,
walk, ride or cycle. Head further afield and
you’ll find some great places to shop until
you’re ready to drop into somewhere relaxing
for a cappuccino, glass of wine or bite to eat.
Stroll the peaceful Thames Path which runs
through Cricklade or the North Wilts Canal
which was opened in 1819 to the west
of the town. How about cycling the local
railway route or ride the restored Swindon
and Cricklade Railway? A bit further afield
you’ll find a range of attractions for all the
family to enjoy, from the glorious Cotswolds,
Keynes Country Park and Lydiard Park to
the Museum of the Great Western Railway
and the Cotswold Country Park and Beach.
If you prefer to spend your leisure time in a
less leisurely fashion, Cricklade has its own
sports’ centre. However, all the high street
shops, sights and leisure amenities of Swindon
are just over six miles away. Attractive local
towns such as Cirencester and Chippenham
are also easy to access. If you have to travel
for business or pleasure, the main A419
runs close to Cricklade, leading to the M4 at
junction 15. The M5 can also be reached via
the M4, at junction 20 . Alternatively, Swindon
Railway Station is just under 11 miles away,
while the nearest airports are Bristol and
Gloucestershire.
