December President’s Report Merry Christmas everyone! It has been a good
year for the club. The outings have been well attended and lots of fish have had their pictures taken this year. There have been other reports of club members who have taken trips to other states to fly fish for big Brown, Cuts and Bone fish. This Club loves to fly fish, and I’m glad to be part of it. At this time I would like to say thank you for allowing me to be your Club President this year. We now have a new board member, Bob Pryor. He will be taking over for Hal Gordon as Newsletter Editor. Any grammatical or spelling errors in the newsletter, including my column, will henceforth be blamed on him! Welcome Bob.
There is one more thing to do this year and that is the Christmas Dinner. December 5, 2018. 6 PM at the Club House. The doors will open at 5 PM so you can pick a table and get your raffle ticket for the prizes. The dinner event will start at 6 PM. The Club will have turkey and ham, thanks to Safeway. The rest of the side dishes are up to the members to bring. Homemade is always good eats. So we’re looking forward to seeing some great Holiday side dishes.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
everyone!

Fly of the Month – Klickitat River Fly
By Chuck Cooney
Background We are going to name this fly “The Klickitat River Fly,” but it is really a large Purple Wire Copper John. I was told to tie up some Copper Johns with purple wire and rubber legs to fish the Klickitat River by the owner of The Fly Shop in The Dalles. I fished the Klickitat River Fly for steelhead on the Klickitat, but only caught trout the day I was there. I liked the fly so I tried it out again on the Deschutes and hooked into a large “B” Run Steelhead. This fly will catch steelhead, so add a few of these to your fly box.
How to Tie 1. Place hook in the vise, slide a bead onto the hook and
attach the tying thread to the hook. 2. Run thread to the end of the hook and tie in two goose
biots for the tail. The tail should be slightly longer than the width of the hook gap.
3. Tie in Purple wire at the end of the hook and wrap forward 2/3s of the shank. Before wrapping the wire, the shank can be built up gradually with thread toward the thorax for a thicker, tapered abdomen.
4. To form the wing case, first tie the base of a 1”strip of green mylar about 1/3 the hook shank length from the eye and on top with the remainder trailing behind the hook.
5. The thorax is formed by wrapping 3-4 pieces of Peacock herl toward the eye. The thorax should be slightly larger in diameter than the abdomen.
6. Tie in your rubber legs in the middle on the thorax with 3 or 4 turns of thread. You can adjust and trim the legs.
7. Pull the mylar strip straight forward over top and secure. 8. Whip finish or half hitch and cement, coat mylar with UV
Resin and Cure
Category Steelhead
Hook Standard wet or scud, size 6
Weight
Tungsten Bead , Plus Lead-free wire
Tail Goose biots, black or brown
Abdomen Wire, purple
Wing case Mylar, green
Thorax Peacock Herl
Legs Rubber, Speckled Tan Medium
Variations Copper Johns are tied in a wide array of colors and sizes: copper, red chartreuse, purple, blue, brown and gold. The color of the legs may vary also: brown, black, tans and red.
How to Fish Fish the fly under a strike indicator in a dead drift for Steelhead fishing. I run a dropper below it most of the time. Be willing to experiment with how deep you place the fly under the indicator. At the end of the drift, let the fly swing back straight downstream from you. Steelhead will take this fly on the swing.
