SEEING IS BELIEVING

by Father George Wilson

One of the most identifiable characteristics of the Orthodox Church building is the use of icons in the sacred space. We are surrounded in the church by these holy images, which give us a glimpse into heaven. Because icons are so prevalent in our tradition, sometimes we may take them for granted and see them simply as wall hangings or room decorations. Although we may see them in this light, this is certainly not the purpose of icons. During the Fall Family Retreat, we will have the great blessing of hearing a religious educator and esteemed clergyman of our Archdiocese speaking on his topic, “Seeing is Believing: Understanding Icons in the Church.”

Our Fall Family Retreat speaker will be Reverend Father Anton (Tony) Vrame, PhD. We encourage your entire family to be with us on Saturday, September 22, from 9:30 am until 2:00 pm.

Father Tony is director of the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, appointed by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios in 2007. He is adjunct associate professor of religious education at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.

As an author Father Tony wrote The Educating Icon: Teaching Wisdom and Holiness in the Orthodox Way (Holy Cross Orthodox Press) in which he proposes a theory, or theology, of education for the Orthodox Christian Church based on the art, theology, and life of the Byzantine icon. He is also the editor of three other books and the author of journal articles and chapters in books on Orthodox Christian religious education, published both in English and Greek.

While he continues to develop his thought on aspects of Orthodox Christian religious education, he has also begun a work that he calls "What Makes Us Orthodox?" Father Tony uses this work as a way of understanding the Orthodox Christian Tradition along principles other than "history and mystery."

His resume includes: director and professor of the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California; managing editor of Holy Cross Orthodox Press and adjunct assistant professor at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, teaching courses in religious education; and lecturer in religious education at Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. Father Tony has represented the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese on the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches in Christ, USA, acting as the chairman of the commission for six years. He is currently the vice-president of the Orthodox Christian Education Commission for the Assembly of Canonical Bishops and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal Religious Education. He served on the Executive Board of the Orthodox Theological Society in America and is leading an effort to create an international academic organization of Orthodox Christian religious educators.

As you can see his resume is extensive, and his experiences in the Church are vast. We are extremely blessed and grateful to have such a busy Church leader speak to our community. Plan to join us for this opportunity to learn more about our Faith in Jesus Christ through the Holy Tradition of icons in the Orthodox Christian experience.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 22, 2018, beginning with light breakfast refreshments at 9:30 am. The day includes lunch and is absolutely free to attend. We will have students of our seminary present to offer a retreat for the elementary and the middle school students. The high school and college students are encouraged to participate in the adult presentation by Father Tony. As always to assist in the food preparation, we plead for you to RSVP by Monday, September 17, at [email protected] or by calling the Cathedral office at 504-282-0259.

S P E C I A L P O I N T S O F I N T E R E S T

BOOK CLUB MEETING—The Book Club will resume its monthly meetings on Thursday, September 13, at 10:00 am in the Coffee Room. The summer assignment was to find a reading or reflection on the Cross. Personal insights on the subject will be shared by the attendees at the September gathering. Everyone is welcome. The Book Club plans to meet on the second Thursday of each month.

GOYA POOL PARTY—All 6th - 12th graders are invited to a Pool Party on Sunday, September 2, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 7030 Milne Boulevard in New Orleans. Bring your swimsuit and your towel for some fun in the sun.

GREEK BAND FOR 2019 GREEK FESTIVAL—The Greek Festival Committee is reaching out to the community for Greek band suggestions, which will be considered for 2019. Contact Stacy Rico with your recommendations.

HOLY TRINTY YOUTH SOCCER FALL SESSION BEGINS—The HTC Youth Soccer fall semester will begin Friday, September 7, at 6:00 pm. All children ages 4 and up are welcome to participate. If you have questions about the program, please contact Angela Fyssas-Lear at [email protected].

RESERVED PEWS—Parents, six (6) of the left front pews will be reserved each Sunday for Sunday Church School families to help expedite receiving Holy Communion before class. The Parish Council asks that you take advantage of this accommodation.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2018—Summer has ended, people are settling into a more regular routine, and the Church begins a new ecclesiastical year on September 1. With this seasonal change, more people are finding their way back to Church. Mind you, however, the Church has been open all summer, and, in fact, is always open for you and your family. The question is, “Are you always there for the Church?” The Stewardship Committee reminds you that the Church needs your support. If the local congregation wants Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral to remain in New Orleans for its children and future generations, everyone must make greater efforts in physically and financially supporting it. Past generations provided a foundation on which we must build. Although our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ guaranteed that the gates of hell would not triumph over His Church, He did not guarantee that there would be a Church here in New Orleans. That task is up to us. Therefore, please come to Church and BRING your children. Also, if you have not yet made your 2018 pledge, please do so soon.
