From Your Pastor
I have two banners in my office that are ordination gifts from two different congregations. The one on the right came from the church where I served my year of intern-ship.
In the bottom left corner of that banner there is an image of a little fire hydrant and the St. Louis arch. There is a story be-hind this.
During that intern-ship year, I accompa-nied the high school youth on a mission trip to St. Louis. During the day we cleaned up a place that had been damaged in a fire. We hauled away tons of fire damaged debris. There was dust and soot everywhere. It was hot, sticky, and humid. And we wore protective masks and gloves, which made us even hotter and more sweaty.
At the end of the day, as we drove back where we were staying, we went through a neighborhood where kids had turned on a fire hydrant and were playing in the gushing water.
I pulled over to the curb with this van-load of sooty, smelly, stink-ing, high school kids. I an-nounced, “We’re getting out.”
And we played in the water with kids in the neighborhood. We were cleaned of everything that
had made us so unclean. We were refreshed in the flowing water. And for a time, we shared in that fire hydrant community with the kids of that neighborhood.
The joy of arriving here at Fjeld-berg Lutheran is the joy of sharing in community together. We may not play in fire hydrants, but we
have been splashed in the same waters togeth-er.
We are members togeth-er in the community of all the baptized. We are
neighbors to one another in a pro-found way. Each of us is a child of the same Creator. We are all named and claimed by the same God.
And we carry that with us in all of our daily activities as neighbors at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, and neighbors in Huxley, and in the surrounding area. As you invite me into your homes and your ac-tivities, you have been inviting me into your lives as well.
This is what we do as people of faith. Christ honors our earthly lives by joining us, living among us, becoming one of us. This is life in community and it is a gift from God.
Peace,
Pastor Erick

July WELCA Events Thursday, July 14 , 2016 9:30 a.m. Gather Bible Study Group has decided to not meet during summer months. You can do this study on your own or it's even more enjoyable to do with a friend. Thursday, July14, 2016 Bibles and Brunch--10:00 a.m. meets at Marilyn Greene's home. (Backyard patio-weather permitting. Details be-low) Every Thursday 1:30 p.m. Mary Group meets at Ballard Creek Community
Some of us didn't want to take a va-cation from Bible Study this summer so we are trying something new. Bring your Bible and enjoy fellow-ship, good food, and spiritual food as we read God's Word. This is not a Gather study so anyone can come. Please call Marilyn Greene at 597-2265 to RSVP so that we know how much food to prepare. My address is 305 West 5th St. Give Bibles and Brunch a try on Thursday, July 14th at 10:00 a.m.
June Bibles and Brunch study was Nothing is Impossible With God. We found the exact words in both Old and New Testament and ended with the rousing story of the Contest on Mt. Carmel of 850 prophets against 1 prophet-Elijah, but Elijah with God. You missed great fel-lowship and discussion. July study will be Why I Am A Lutheran with materials from the Southeastern Syn-od Convention held in Cedar Rapids-Ely in June to focus on the 500 Year Anniversary of Luther.
GATHER: The Heart of the Matter--Seeking God Session 2 : Treasure in Clay Jars Theme Verse " When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart" Jeremiah 29:13 This is a three month study written by Angela Shannon. In this 2nd lesson she focuses on conflict in churches. Paul had his hands full as he tried to get the early churches back on track. The Co-rinthians even had conflict on partaking of the Lord's Supper. Remember back when we didn't even offer Communion every month? Most of Paul's letters ask them to remember God's love should shine through each of them as they wor-ship. Remember when there was argu-ment about John Mark continuing to go with Paul on a missionary journey? When we don't agree, do we walk away instead of working to reconcile? I think of the choir anthem and the words in scripture that remind us "many gifts, one Spirit". Fjeldberg is like a tapestry of many colored threads woven together as members of God's family ever since our Baptism. Every Sunday in our liturgy of Confes-sion and Absolution we are called to self-examine and to repair and heal. Do we seek God in difficult times or seek someone with whom to gossip? There we are looking in the mirror as we did last month knowing full well that only God can help us gain more unity. Paul devoted a whole section of his letter in I Cor. about Christian love--not just for a bride and groom, but for all of us as children of God, living in God's family. "So faith, hope, love abide these three: but the greatest of these is love." (I Cor . 13:13) Chr istian loves leads to reconciliation. We can actually grow when we have conflict.

This JULY Family Event

7:00—8:30 PM @ Slater Pool
All families are invited to bring their friends,
neighbors, and extended family to the pool with your floaters and water
toys. We will follow swimming with Pizza. Guaranteed a great time for
everyone, we hope to see you there!
The youth were excited to welcome the
new Pastor in June and are looking for-
ward to continuing to connect with him
in the coming months. This excitement
was shown by filling his office with bal-
loons on his first day. He enjoyed the
enthusiastic welcome. June was busy
with bubble soccer, VBS, and Meals from
the Heartland. Bubble soccer was a blast; it
was fun to see the new pastor take on the
high school students in a game of sharks and
minnows and win. We had a lot of spectators
as well big thank you to all who came and
supported the event. Riverside led a very fun
and inspirational week of VBS. Even with
everyone's busy schedules, we were able to
take 16 people to Meals from the Heartland
in Des Moines, and we packaged 7,000
meals!
July holds a lot too. We will welcome the in-
coming grades to their respective youth
groups. 4-5-6 will experience a half-night lock
-in. HS Youth have a trip planned to go tubing at the lake, and our high
school mission trip will go to Cincinnati, Ohio for 6 days. The focus will be to
serve children in the area. We will work with at-risk youth programs to help
teach kids sports and skills to help improve their futures, as well as work
with organizations to help make sure all kids are fed a decent meal during
the summer months. We have 8 youth and 2 adults going. It will be a week
fill of service, faith, and building relationships. Please pray for all the partici-
pants to get what they need from the week as well as safe travels. We are
so grateful for all the help raising the funds to take this trip. It would not be
possible with out all the hard work of the Youth Committee, parents, and of
course all the wonderful contributors during fundraisers. The group is excit-
ed to get home and share their experiences with everyone.

LSI—God’s work. Our hands.
As a social ministry organization of the ELCA, Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) is so thankful for your partnership in ministry! We give special thanks for the many congregations making LSI the focus of their “God’s work. Our hands.” projects.
Past “God’s work. Our hands.” projects have included donations of tools for dads enrolled in our early childhood programs, plus chil-dren’s books, towel bundles, school supplies and backpacks. LSI has also been blessed to receive “noisy” offerings, special offerings and proceeds from yard work or luncheons. Some Sunday School classes and youth groups have also encouraged youth at LSI’s Beloit and Bremwood Residential Treatment Centers through quilts and letters.
We thank you for your witness of God’s love and your service! If you are interested in ministering to those served by LSI and would like to know more about current needs, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at
LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa
