The FIVE “I’s “OF TRUE LEADERSHIP
There are different characteristics needed to become an authentic leader. Here I wish to elaborate five “I’s “of true
leadership.
Initiative
True leaders demonstrate initiative. They don’t sit on the sidelines. Leaders understand that you have to find new
paths and creative modes in order to accomplish targets and objectives. Leaders put their first foot forward so that
others can follow by example. Truly lead by example. A real leadership trait that makes the individual stand out from
the crowd is initiative.
Without initiative, leaders are simply workers in leadership positions – Bo Bennett
Integrity
Core of integrity is truthfulness. It is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, principles, expectations
and outcomes. Trust is a inherit point of leadership. Team members have to trust that leadership is serving
everyone’s best interest and leadership has to trust that team members are fulfilling their responsibilities. Great
leaders lead with integrity, honesty and values. By taking on this rule, leaders invoke trust and respect from their
team.
Truthfulness is the foundation of quality of the trust that is necessary for the success of any business.
The supreme quality for a leader is unquestionably integrity – Dwight D.Eisenhower

Insight
Authentic leaders have insight. A great leader must have quality insight into his / her organization. You have to
understand the smaller tasks that make up the larger job. You have to anticipate the barriers you could face. Leaders
need wisdom and discernment. Leaders constantly gather people insights in order to understand the landscape of
their business, make strategic decisions, and also communicate effectively.
All in all, you need to understand the mission of your organization, from the smallest detail to the largest and
broader picture.
There is nothing so terrible as activity without insight – Johann Wolfgang van Goethe
Intelligence
This comes in all forms – such as emotional, social and intellectual intelligence. Intelligence is something that can be
difficult to develop. The road toward becoming more intelligent is difficult, long and can’t be completed without
investing considerable time. Developing intelligence is a life style choice. To develop intelligence you need to
commit to continual learning – both formally and informally.
The measure of intelligence is the ability to change – Albert Einstein

Inspirational leader feels passionately about the vision and mission of the organization. Inspirational leader listens
to the people in her organization. Talking to people about your passion is not enough, must allow the ideas and
thoughts of your staff to help from the vision and mission, or minimally the goals and action.
