THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Jonah 2:1-3:5, 10

Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; how shall I look again upon your holy temple?’ The waters closed in over me; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the Pit, O Lord my God. As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!”

Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land.

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 62:6-14 chant, George Thalben-Ball

6 For God alone my soul in silence waits; * truly, my hope is in him.

7 He alone is my rock and my salvation, * my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.

8 In God is my safety and my honor; * God is my strong rock and my refuge.

9 Put your trust in him always, O people, * pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.

10 Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, * even those of low estate cannot be trusted.

11 On the scales they are lighter than a breath, * all of them together.

12 Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; * though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

13 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, * that power belongs to God.

14 Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, * for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:14-20

Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. Reader The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

12

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [ ___________ and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

NEWS and INFORMATION for the Week of January 24, 2021

Adult Forum- Epiphany “New Models for Mission” with David Copley, A Virtual offering from ChurchNext. Sundays, January 17, 24, (pause for Annual Meeting January 31) continues February 7 and 14. Live Virtually (Zoom) 9:25-10:15. While the message of Jesus Christ is timeless, its delivery methods sure do change. 2,000 years of missions work has taught Christians a lot, so that reaching people with the message of Jesus Christ has greatly improved. David Copley knows a lot about that, he serves as the Director of Global Partnerships and Mission Personnel for The Episcopal Church. In this course he offers four video presentations entitled:

Changing Paradigms Just Sit and Be Mission Based Around a Common Interest Adapting to New Models of Mission

This four-week session facilitated by Canon Grandfield and Dean Pompa features the work of the Rev. David Copley of the Episcopal Church, U.S.A. The groundwork and exploration of models of mission will lead to our Lenten study focus on the Cathedral’s own partnerships and experiences in global mission. Please register by emailing [email protected]

Epiphany Prayer Opportunity “Praying our Light to Shine! Praying our way to hope with Anglican Prayer Beads.” An offering from our Ministry of Healing and Wholeness. An Epiphany invitation to learn how to make and then pray/meditate with Anglican Prayer Beads. In the 1980’s a group of Episcopalians set out in group contemplative prayer using beads. The experience is similar to the Roman tradition of praying the rosary but unique in that there is a more meditative focus. This type of prayer will deepen and transform your devotions into a richer spiritual experience. Yet more transformative is to do so in community with Cathedral companions and our friends! Register by emailing [email protected] OR by calling the church office 610-865-0727. Registration takes place from Wednesday, January 6th until Sunday, January 17th or until the experience has filled subscription. (36 capacity). Includes making your own prayer beads and regular meditation experiences, all of which will take place in community via virtual community (Zoom). Once registered you will receive an email notifying you that your packet is available for pickup from the office and sending you link information for the sessions on making the prayer beads and subsequent mediation experiences.

*When: The Season of Epiphany! Wednesday, January 6-mid February. *Bead Making Workshops (Live Virtual-Zoom) Monday, January 25 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 28 7:00 p.m.

Group Spiritual Direction for Moms For moms: Please join on Sunday, February 7 at 10:00 AM for an opportunity to gather virtually each month to ‘listen to each other’ from that sacred inner space where we are free to ‘just show up’ and honestly name ‘how it is with our soul’. Punctuated by times of silence, our time together will offer a place where moms can ‘tend their own spiritual wellbeing’ and be on the receiving end, vs being on the 'giving side'. Contact Marcella Kraybill-Greggo [email protected] for details & Zoom Link. 10:00 AM February 7, March 7 and April 11

English in a Tote During the season after the Epiphany, we here at The Cathedral Church of the Nativity are partnering with The Refugee Community Center at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator in Allentown to provide tote bags of supplies to students taking ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) through the Refugee Community Center. Each lovely blue cloth tote bag contains a comprehensive Oxford English dictionary, a lap-size white board, markers, notebooks, and pencils - the basics necessary for those learning and practicing their English. Between now and Shrove Tuesday, February 16, we hope to raise enough funds to purchase the supplies and assemble 40 tote bags. Each tote costs approximately $35 in supplies, so our goal is $1400. You can find more about the Refugee Community Center here: https://episcopalmediator.org/refugee-center

What is donated above and beyond our goal will go to supporting the Refugee Community Center’s work of caring for refugees and asylum-seekers who are in need of rental assistance at this time. So, let’s share a hearty bit of Nativity Cathedral generosity and hospitality! Donations for totes and more can be made by check mailed to the Cathedral Office, memo: “English in a Tote” or electronically through our online giving portal, also under “English in a Tote.” Questions? [email protected]

Bethlehem Emergency Shelter The Cathedral has been an integral part of this ministry that serves the homeless since its inception 12 years ago.
