o Brownie Quest Book (copies of pages 49, 50 and 51 for the girl who doesn’t have a book. 

o Pens, pencils o Quest Map o Light Ball (like a tennis ball) o Note cards with one value from the Girl 

Scout Law written on them, hide them ahead of time for the Brownies to find in the Discovering Values part of the lesson.

Discover Me (pg. 49) 10 minutes 

As the girls arrive, have them sit down and work on the Discover Me star on page 49 in their book.   If they need help reading or writing offer to help out.  Tell them that it’s ok if they can’t think of answers to all the statements, just do their best.    

Ball Toss 510 minutes 

Have the girls stand in their Brownie Circle. Session Leaders start: Say: “My Name is __________ and I ______, so I ________.  Example: My name is Miss Jeannie and I love to exercise outside, so I go hiking!  Have them use their Stars for ideas. After each girl goes, she tosses the ball to the next girl. Each girl should get a 23 turns. 

Discover my Family (pg. 51) 10 minutes 

Recite the Girl Scout Law  Each girl should pick a line from the Girl Scout Law to represent her family. (try not to repeat, but it’s ok, just fill in the ones that the Brownies miss with your own.)  Have the girls sit down and do the star activity on page 51 in their book.  

Discover Values (pg. 50) 10 minutes 

Have the note cards hidden ahead of time.   Tell the girls to get in groups of 2 or 3. 

 Tell them that now they are going to learn how to “Go ELF”  Explore Link Arms Fly into Action  Tell the girls in each group to link arms and how many clues each group should find.  Tell the girls to skip (or hop) and stay linked, while they flap their arms like they are flying and search for clues.  (if this is too complicated, make it easier…  Ask the girls to read their clues in order and figure out what it says.  Have them sit down and do page 50.  If you are running short on time, tell them that they can finish the activity after lunch, during free time.  

The First Key (pg. 52) 5 minutes 

Have the Girls stand in a circle and repeat:  The Discover Key It’s all about me: What I believe And my Family  Pass out the first key while they repeat 

 

Next they go to Snack, tell them where to go for Snack.

Human Knot 10 minutes 

   Direct them in the Human Knot  Have them play the game a several times: once where they can talk   once where they can’t talk,   once where only half of the girls can talk (divide them by shirt color, or something visible) 

Hula Hoop 10 minutes 

Ask them what made the first game easier or harder?  Play the Hula Hoop game (stand in a circle and try to pass the hula hoop without breaking the circle.  Have them try it with their eyes open, and then eyes closed  

Partner Selfportrait 20 minutes 

Have the girls get partners and draw each other’s portraits  While they’re drawing ask: What made the games easier? Harder? Did you need to trust each other? What happens when someone makes a mistake? Did they feel bad? What can you do to keep them from feeling bad? What makes team work fun? What would make us feel bad about being a part of the team? 

 

Tell them where to go for the Team Agreement Session

Team Agreement  1520 minutes 

Ask the girls to recall what made the games in the last session easier and more enjoyable  Write on the poster board the things that are most important to the Brownies  Examples: Listen, Help each other, Let go of mistakes, Talk kindly, Look at the person who is talking… etc.  Give the team agreement to the Brownie leaders to take home 

Circles of Caring Necklace 1015 minutes 

Pass out the circles of caring craft pieces  On the smallest circle write “Me” and something special about themselves  On the next circle write “Family” and a way that they take care of their families  On the next circle write “Brownies” and their favorite part of their team agreement  On the 4th circle write “community”, who is in their community? (friends, neighbors, etc.)  On the 5th circle write “World”  

Friendship Game 10 minutes 

 That’s Me! 

One person stands in front of the group and shares a fact about themselves, like their favorite color or favorite animal. Everyone who also shares that favorite thing stands up and yells, “That’s me!” 

Tell the Brownies where they can go to eat lunch and what they might want to do during their Free time.  The next session starts at 1:00pm.  Where?

Review Progress 10 minutes 

Have the girls tell you what they’ve done so far.  Ask leading questions like: What was your favorite thing? What surprised you? What do you want to keep doing after you get home?    

What does our Neighborhood Need? 15 minutes 

Read “the Case of the Broken Sidewalk” from page 64 in the book.  Who did the kids worry about? Why did the kids write a letter? What is the result of writing the letter?  What happened when we wrote a letter? (for our Brownie Quest?) 

Brownie Brainstorms 15 – 20 minutes 

Have the Brownies brainstorm 812 ideas for things in their neighborhood that need to be fixed, or made better.  Bike path? Playground? Water fountains? Library? Healthy food? 

The second Key Ceremony 5 minutes 

Have the girls form a circle and repeat the following as you pass out the keys:  The Connect Key! That’s more than me. It’s my arms and your arms. Linking together, We’re free. 

Tell the girls where to go for the next session.

Where can we make a difference? 30 minutes 

 Guide the Brownies through filling out the Brownie Brainstorm Chart  After the Brownies have some complete ideas (all the columns filled out, have them decide which one they want to pursue.  This will involve team decision making. Remind them about their Team agreement from earlier.  Guide them to choosing one idea that everyone can live with, it may not be everyone’s favorite idea.   Try to help them come up with compromises.   

Scavenger Hunt 30 minutes 

Give the Brownie the scavenger hunt map   Ask them if they want you to go with them, or if they want to explore on their own. 

 

Tell the Brownies where to be at 3pm for their snack.

Take Action! (pg. 6869) 30 minutes 

Have the girls do page 68 in their books  They should have figured out what project they want to do.  If their project is something that they can do at camp (such as write a letter), have them do it.  If the project isn’t something that they can do at camp, have them make a detailed plan of who, what, when, where, why and how.  Make sure that each girl has a job to do, no matter how big or small.  

The Third Key 10 minutes 

Ask the girls how they acted as leaders today?  How are do they think that they are doing as a Brownie Team?  Now we’ve flown into action and ____________ (summarize what they have completed).   What were the first two steps? (Discover, Connect)  The last step is … Actually doing it!  Have the girls stand in a circle and repeat as you pass out the third key:  Flying into action That’s the biggest key! Improving the world All around you and me. 

Singalong 10 minutes 

Pass out the song books and lead the girls in songs 

 

Tell the girls where we will meet for the Reflection session.

Reflection  Give the girls a blank card and a pen or pencil  Give them a few minutes to write a few words or draw a picture about how they can keep being a leader in their lives moving forward.  

Put It Together  Go over the Discovery session (the First Key) Go over the Connect session (the Second Key) Go over the Take Action session (the Third Key)  Now that you have the three keys to lead, you can use them to keep on opening doors to more leadership adventures in Girl Scouting.
