The building of Color Fantasy, the world’s largest cruise ship with car decks, took less than two years. This is a record-breaking time and proof of theproject-management skills of the Finnish shipbuilding industry. It is also anexcellent testimonial to the excellence of the Finnish subcontracting sector.

First-class modular construction skills and managing a project compris-ing numerous subcontractors is by no means easy, however. In fact, it is all theresult of a long process of learning through practice that has been scientificin its precision.

Cer tain nationalities seem to be especially adept at working together. The manager of the Color Fantasy project Olli Jantunen from Aker Finnyardspraises the seamless collaboration between Finns and Norwegians. “Weworked hard together and both the customer and the shipyards are satisfied.”

At Aker Finnyards, Finnish-Norwegian co-operation is what it is all about.Following a merger last year, there is only one major shipbuilder in Finland:Aker Finnyards, led by Yrjö Julin. Norwegian ownership and Finnish ship-buildingknow-how are the constituent elements of Aker Finnyards. It has proved avery workable concept.

This magazine reports on the most important common issues in themarine industry from a Finnish perspective, covering building projects andkey expert themes such as marine electrical engineering and pipeline corrosion.

Seatec 2005 is a global platform for the Finnish perspective. Its newlayout is visually even more impressive than before and is especially wellsuited for the high-quality images of ship projects. The index provides infor-mation on the most important Finnish companies in the industry.

Seatec is also published on the web at www.finlandexports.com. Thesite is available to anyone around the world who is interested in shipbuildingand extraordinary cruise ships.

MERIKE sharpens the competitive edge

Good tools for managing networkinformation of the marine industry

MERIKE, the technology pro-gramme of the marine industrybranch has now been running forover a year, and the experienceshows that the companies areremarkably willing and interestedin increasing research and devel-opment activities. Ending in 2007,the programme focuses on areasfor developing are the earningpotential of a product and life-cycle support, lowering productioncosts and shortening deliverytimes in the Finnish marineindustry.

At the moment, there are 34separate research and develop-ment projects, most of them inprivate companies, and only few

at the VTT Technical Research Centre ofFinland and Helsinki University of Technol-ogy,” said Teppo Virta, the manager of thetechnology programme at the end of 2004.“The total budget of these developmentprojects is EUR 26 million, including EUR12 million in public support. The compa-nies have committed to investing 14 mil-lion in the programme, which is a remark-able signal of their R & D enthusiasm. Theprogramme is open to all Finnish compa-nies and research institutions willing toimprove their operation and products andincrease the competitive edge of theFinnish marine industry.”

One of the goals of MERIKE is toimprove the networking of companiesand management of information on the

Web. It is also a project to improve mod-ularity. The third strong goal is to increasethe productivity among the networkcompanies.

“The initial conditions are similar tothe Finnish metal industry, the productivi-ty is at a good level, but has not increasedsufficiently,” said Virta.”“The goal of the pro-gramme is to prepare the Finnish marineindustry for change in the operation meth-od needed to maintain and increase thevolume and productivity of the business. When Aker Finnyards streamlines its struc-ture, a new competitive advantage will begained by establishing a network of ship-yards. The main threat to the Finnishmarine industry is that it will be unsuc-cessful in international competition.”

According to Virta, the internationaldimension is a significant factor. He com-

pares the Finnish cluster to a laboratory, where R & D is efficient because the infor-mation flows well in a small country and atightly knit cluster.

Kronodoc to provide tools forinformation logistics

All three Aker Yards ASA shipyards inFinland use information logistics tools de-veloped by Kronodoc. “This strengthensour position as the basis on which theFinnish marine cluster builds its networkco-operation. Finland has been an excel-lent development laboratory for our com-pany, and it enables our transfer to inter-national markets soon,” says Raimo Jalonen, managing director of Kronodoc.

“The information logistics solutionsof Kronodoc increase the competitive

edge of network in extensive projectssuch as shipbuilding. Kronodoc is involvedin a product development project with-in the MERIKE programme. The aim is todevelop marine cluster standards andrules within the software.”

“Kronodoc has been used for someyears now at the Aker Finnyards Raumashipyard, and it has enabled the introduc-tion of a new operation method. AkerFinnyards, Deltamar and Wärtsilä wereour first customers,” says Jalonen.

“The software supports the man-agement of the ship’s life-cycle from thedesign to production and operation. Thesystem enables the use of modern de-sign and document tools. The system in-cludes document management, projectinformation, process monitoring and net-work management,” Jalonen concludes.

he yards have been working asone company since January 1,2005 when the new operativeorganisation became valid.

Aker Finnyards is amongst world lead-ing designers and builders of cruise vesselsand ferries as well as other technicallycomplex vessels.

During the last ten years, over 25%of the world’s cruise ships have come fromthe company’s shipyards, the major custom-ers within this vessel segment being theglobally leading cruise operators. AkerFinnyards is also the leading ferry builderin the world, as well as an expert in mul-tipurpose icebreakers and sophisticatednaval craft.

Ten newbuildings in orderbook

Aker Finnyards‘ revenue is ca. EUR 1 bil-lion. The ca. 1.8 billion EUR order book in-cludes the world‘s two largest cruise ves-sels for Royal Caribbean International, acruise ferry for Tallink, three container ves-sels for Baltic Container Shipping, an icebreaking supply vessel for Fesco, an arcticcontainer vessel for Norils Nickel, two mis-sile boats and a conversion for the FinnishNavy and the lengthening of a cruise ves-sel. In addition a Letter of Intent has beensigned on a cruise vessel for NCL, in-cluding an option.

Wide production range

Aker Finnyards has comprehensive ex-per ience in execut ing demandingprojects, based on the history of 3,500ships designed and built - both long se-ries and extremely demanding one-offs.

EXPERTISE IN MULTIPURPOSE ICEBREAKERS AND NAVAL CRAFT

Aker FinnyardsLeading Ferry Builder in the World

Finland’s three largest shipyards situatedin Helsinki, Rauma and Turku form thenew Aker Finnyards – the Finnish yardswithin the Aker Yards Group.

Deliveries include cruise vessels, car-pas-senger ferries, fast ferries, ice breakers, naval craft, offshore vessels.

Today Aker Finnyards is focusing ondeveloping innovative and commerciallysound solutions for its customers. The mainfocus is on the Cruise and Ferries businessarea, being among the top builders in theworld. Superior usability, efficient operatingand a high standard of passenger comfortare trademarks of the solutions that AkerFinnyards can provide.

Icebreaking technology has alwaysbeen a strong niche within Finnish shipbuilding.

Aker Finnyards‘ knowledge in ice tech-nology is beyond compare. 60 % of theworld‘s icebreakers have been built by thecompany. The most advanced ship designs,as the multipurpose icebreaker and thedouble acting icebreaker-supply vesseloriginate from the yards.

On January 1, 2005 started opera-tions the subsidiary company Aker Arctic

Technology Inc. (AARC) to continue theactivity of the yard‘s arctic R&D laboratory.During 2005 AARC will erect a modernnew ice model test facility in the Vuosaaridistrict of Helsinki. There will be a newmodel basin twice as wide as the one usedtoday. The new company has plans, amongothers, to model wide-scaled offshore op-erations, and also market and sell completeship projects.

Aker Finnyards is the purveyor ofthe Finnish Navy. Deliveries include minelayers, fast surface combatants, multi-pur-pose hovercraft . The yard has specialexpertise in new purpose-specific solu-tions, such as the use of composite struc-tures, stealth materials and advancedoperational technology.

Over the years, over 100 naval crafthas been delivered for the Navy. The co-operation dates back to the 1930‘s. In theeighties four Helsinki-class missile boatswere delivered, and in the nineties four of

Rauma-class. The series of four missile boatsfor the new “Squadron 2000” are called theHamina-class.

Aker Finnyards also has an own Life-cycle Services department, through whichthe yard wants to support the cruise oper-ators to ensure that year after year cruisecustomers receive the state of the art ex-perience onboard that they are used to.

In June 2004 an agreement was madewith Royal Caribbean International Ltd. ona revitalisation and lengthening project ofthe luxury cruise ship M/S Enchantment ofthe Seas. The project is regarded strategi-cally important for the yard in the growingmarket of cruise ship conversions.

Piikkio Works, the 100 % ownedsubsidiary of Aker Finnyards specialisesin the building of cabin areas based onthe concept of prefabricated cabin andbathroom modules for the ship buildingindustry. They do design, consulting, man-ufacture and installation.

Human resources

The number of per sonnel at AkerFinnyards amounts to some 4,000 em-ployees. The company‘s “assembly yard”concept means employing directly these“own” people and lots of others in co-operation companies, thus boosting the

whole surrounding economic regions. The shipyards within the company

have for several years adapted this concept, utilising a network of advanced partners. Alot of outfitting work is out-sourced to them, and the network of suppliers today forman integrated part of the shipbuilding ac-tivities. The co-operating companies haveadapted their own production to seamlesslyfit into the projects of the shipyard.

With the highly qualified workforceand network of advanced partners com-bined with Aker Finnyards´ highly qualifiedproduction and project management, theassembly yard philosophy leads to theshortest possible throughput time, excel-lent quality and overall economy.

Facilities

The shipbuilding capacity of Aker Finnyardsis distributed to three shipyards in Finland.

The three yards situated in Helsinki,Rauma and Turku are amongst the largestyard facilities in Europe. The modern andefficient units have benefitted from severalinvestment and development programmes.

The Turku shipyard is one of thelargest and most modern in Europe. The dimensions of the newbuildingdock (365 x 80 x 10 metres) enable theconstruction of virtually any type of vessel

and the dock is equipped with a 600 tonnesgantry crane.

A recent large investment programmeat the yard included increased automationof the steel production line and new in-door production facilities including halls forsteel production and block assembly.

Production at the Helsinki shipyardis carried out in a covered newbuildingdock, measuring 280.5 x 34 x 9.5 metres. It allows the construction of full-sizedPanamax vessels.

Recent investments include a newpaintshop, and increasing the lifting heightand lifting capacity, to 450 tonnes, in thecovered newbuilding dock.

In the 260 x 85 x 9 metres newbuild-ing dock of the Rauma shipyard it is possi-ble to build vessels up to 150,000 dwt. Thelifting capacity of the cranes is 300 tonnes.

Ships on order

The order situation of Aker Finnyards im-proved remarkably during last year:

On 5 January a contract was signed forthe construction of three container carrierswith Baltic Container Shipping, a companyestablished to acquire the vessels and long-term charter them to the Swedish stock-listed shipping company B&N Nordsjöfrakt. The vessels to be delivered in 2006 are pur-

pose-built for carrying SECU-units (Sto-ra Enso Container Unit), which have larg-er dimensions and a larger payload than astandard container. The 13,800 dwt vesselswill be 190 m long and 26 m wide. Theywill have a cargo capacity of 155 SECUs.The propulsion machinery will consist oftwo medium speed diesel engines, equipped with catalytic reduction of ex-haust gas emissions. All the three vesselsare earmarked for the Rauma yard.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. contin-ues developing extremely large cruise ves-sels for the volume segments of the market. Two Freedom-class, ultra large cruise vesselshave been ordered, of which the first onewill be named Freedom of the Seas. She willbe delivered in spring 2006 and the secondvessel (ordered on 8 September 2004) in2007. The 160,000 GT Freedom class is alengthened version of the five Voyager-classvessels, delivered during 1999 to 2003.

Under production in Turku yard, roughly 15 percent larger than the Voyag-er-class, the Freedom-class will have a lengthover all of 339 m and a beam of 38.6 m.At double-occupancy, it will carry 3,600passengers and a crew of 1,400.

The combined icebreaker, offshoresupply and standby vessel “Fesco Sakhalin”will be delivered in May 2005 from Helsinkifor the Russian owner Far Eastern ShippingCompany (FESCO). It is one of the mostsophisticated and versatile ships ever builtfor arctic operations. The newbuilding is ofthe patented “double-acting” type, whichmeans that the design is optimised for bothicebreaking and operating in open water. While working as an icbreaker the vesselmoves stern first. In this 99.9 m long vessela 13,000 kW propulsion machinery hasbeen installed, providing a open water-speed of 15 knots.

The Russian company MMC Norilsk

Nickel ordered on 28 August 2004 a pro-totype for a 14,500 dwt arctic containervessel from Aker Finnyards for delivery in2006. This new type of icebreaking cargovessel is intended for the northern searoute of Russia and is a possible replace-ment for the current multi purpose vesselof type SA-15. The Finnish built SA-15 hasbeen successfully operated in the watersnorth of Russia for some twenty years.Thevessel is building on the Helsinki yard.

Ordered on 28 October 2004, a newgeneration cruise ferry is building in theRauma yard for the Estonian Tallink Group. This 48,300 gt vessel will be an enlargenedversion of MS Romantika and Victoria I builtfor Tallink by Aker Finnyards recently. Whendelivered in spring 2006, the new vessel withcapacity for 2,800 passengers and 1,130lane metres of cargo will start regular cruis-es between Helsinki and Tallinn.

two fast missile craft of the Hamina-classfor delivery in 2005 and 2006. The proto-type Hamina was built in 1998, followed bythe “Tornio” in 2003. The two followingvessels will complete the Finnish Navy´s“Squadron 2000”. The missile boat mea-surements are: 51 m length, 8.5 m beam,1.7 m draught and a displacement of 236 t.The hull is of aluminium and light weight com-posite materials are used e.g. in the super-structure. Propulsion is provided by highspeed diesels and two water jets, which givethe vessel a speed of over 30 knots. The ves-sels are in production in the Rauma yard, aswell as the conversion of the “Hamina”, in-cluding installation of combat systems.

The conversion of the Enchantmentof the Seas includes lengthening of the shipby building a 22,2 meter midbody, cutting, inserting and joining of the midbody, as wellas final outfitting, powering up and recomis-sioning of the ship. After the lengthening, the ship will be 301.8 metres overall, andwill have 151 additional passanger cabins. The project also includes an extensivepublic area revitalisation program.

The midbody will be built in the Turkuyard and the lengthening will take place insummer 2005 while the cruise ship is be-ing drydocked at the Keppel VerolmeShipyard in Rotterdam.

In December 2004 Aker Finnyardsand Star Cruises-owned NCL CorporationLtd signed a Letter of Intent about buildinga 89,000 GT Panamax-cruise vessel. It alsoincludes an option for a second ship.

Recent deliveries

Last year´s deliveries from Aker Finnyardswere dominated by large passenger vessels.

On 9 February 2004 the cruise ves-sel Carnival Miracle was handed over toCarnival Corporation from the Helsinkiyard. She is the sixth cruise ship of the Pan-amax-size Spirit-class for Carnival CruiseLines (four ships) and Costa Crociere (twoships). The first ship in the series, CostaAtlantica, was delivered in year 2000. Car-nival Spirit and Carnival Pride were deliv-ered in 2001, Carnival Legend in 2002 andCosta Mediterranea followed in 2003.

Due to an exceptionally large shareof cabins with balconies – 70 per cent of allthe staterooms on board – CarnivalMiracle and her sister ships have set a newstandard for cruise ship accommodation.

One of the main features on board is

the Metropolis Atrium, stretching over tendecks. The three deck high Phantom loungeseats some 1,160 guests. The main restau-rant Bacchus Restaurant is two decks highand seats altogether some 1,300 guests. Thegalley is positioned below the restaurantand the service personnel move betweenthe decks by escalators. Another interest-ing feature is the Nick & Nora’s supper clublocated at the top of the ten-deck-high atri-um and housed under a red-tinted glassdome that forms the forward portion of theCarnival Miracle’s massive winged funnel.

Last spring the Estonian ferry ownerAS Tallink Grupp took delivery of its sec-ond newbuilding Victoria I from Rauma. Sheis technically a sister vessel to the Romanti-ka, delivered by the same yard in 2002, butthere are several modifications regardingthe passenger facilities.

The new vessel is employed on Tallink’sroute Tallinn–Stockholm and has thereforebeen adapted to the Swedish market. Thereare considerably more luxurious cabins onthe Victoria I than on her elder sister, whichis trading between Tallinn and Helsinki. Theinterior design of the restaurants has beenchanged and the conference area is muchlarger, seating 400 people. On the car deckthere are hoistable car decks for private cars.

Victoria I has a typical ferry machin-ery, consisting of four medium speed die-sel engines coupled to two shafts. Tallinkhas introduced catalytic reduction of theexhaust gas emissions from both mainand auxiliary engines.

The Birka Paradise, which is the firstnew-built large passenger vessel within theFinnish and Aland merchant fleet in morethan 10 years, was handed over to BirkaLine on November 8. She is purpose-builtfor Birka Line’s short cruises betweenStockholm and Mariehamn. The traffic isoperated under the brand Birka Cruises, which is Birka Line’s wholly owned Swedishsubsidiary.

The main attraction of the vessel isno doubt the innovative closed sun deckwith swimming pools, which is covered bya glass roof. An artificial sun provides thebeach with a light and the temperature in-side is kept at some 30 degrees C. The roofof the sun deck can be opened during thesummer to let the real sun in.

Birka Paradise fulfils two new classcriteria from Det Norske Veritas: CleanDesign and Comfort Class 1. The CleanDesign rule defines several environmental

solutions for ship structures, such as pro-hibiting the carriage of oil in the doublebottom. Comfort Class 1 means that thenoise and vibration level is extremely low, ensuring a pleasant environment for thepassengers.

Measuring more than 75,000 GT, thespaces on board the Color Fantasy, theworld´s largest cruise vessel with car decks, are simply huge. She was delivered to Col-or Line by from the Turku yard in Decem-ber. The interiors and solutions on boardColor Fantasy have much in common withthe Voyager-type cruise vessels.. The pas-sengers embark on deck 7 and enter themall called “Fantasy Promenade”. With alength of 163 m it is the largest prome-nade so far on a vessel. By the streetthere are shops, restaurants, bars and achildren’s playroom. In the fore end thereis an atrium with panoramic view lifts.

Four medium-speed engines give thevessel a service speed of 22 knots. ColorFantasy is an extremely silent vessel andone of very few to fulfil Det Norske Veritas’class notation Comfort Class 1. The vesselalso incorporates environment friendlydesign solutions according to the classifi-cation society’s Clean standards.

he breaking in of the system washighly successful. As a matter offact, vessels started to report sev-

eral hours before the system was imple-mented. By the end of September as manyas 35,000 reports had been received. Oneand the same vessel may, however, sendseveral reports as a report has to be re-newed for instance if the vessel’s port ofdestination is changed.

GOFREP operators receive arrivaland departure reports from vessels andmonitor the adherence to the system bymeans of a VTS traffic image. Special atten-

Successful start for GOFREP system inthe Gulf of FinlandSince summer 2004 vessels of 300 grosstonnage and upwards are obliged toreport to Helsinki, St. Petersburg orTallinn Traffic when sailing in the Gulf ofFinland.

tion is paid to contravention of traffic sep-aration regulations and rules of the roadat sea. The importance of the job is con-firmed by risk analyses, which show thatreporting systems reduce the risk of colli-sion by as much as 80%.

Increased interaction between vesselsand authorities has also brought about someunexpected advantages. Thus vessels arenow more active in reporting observed oilslicks to the Finnish Maritime Administra-tion, which forwards the information to theFinnish Environment Agency.

If a shipmaster does not follow therules of the road, this is pointed out tohim by the operator who admonishes himto adhere to the rules. If there is no ade-quate reason for contravention of the rules,a contravention report is sent to the flagstate. Adequate reasons are emergencies, engine trouble, weather conditions, etc. It

is possible to abolish the traffic separationscheme for the winter navigation seasonbut the reporting obligation always remains.

Contraventions are reported to theflag state authorities, which are responsi-ble for further action, such as determina-tion of punishment. However, over theperiod July-September, not a single reportwas sent, as there were no serious inci-dents. Documents are however compiledin each case but information on minoroffences remains with the GOFREP au-thorities. Finland, Estonia and Russia ex-change information on the number of con-traventions and their nature. If a vessel isguilty of repeated contraventions, the au-thorities will take necessary action.

utrosafe Oy is an enterprise lo-cated in Vantaa, it has focusedon safety equipments and sys-tems as well on land as at sea.

One big part of operation consists of saleand export of safety and guiding lights, manu-factured by Wikrolux Oy from Pietarsaari,to premises and vessels.

International safety regulations havebecome harder during the last few yearsand along the regulations also requirementsfor long service and appearance of fixtures

have changed essentially.Wikrolux Oy applies light emitting

diodes, leds, as a source of light in its light-ing fixtures. The advantages of using ledsare a long service life, low power con-sumption as well as compact structure.Acryl signs in lighting fixture are engravedand silk-screened and they create a verygood contrast in all lighting circumstances,in consequence of that the appearance andoptics of Wikrolux products are in a classof their own.

Autrosafe Oy has delivered–“MusterStation” signs to weather decks of lifeboatstations to as many as five Voyager classvessels built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards. As anew area Autrosafe Oy delivered severalhundred indoor lights to new building 1351of Norwegian Color Line. A low structureand battery back up applying to each light-ing fixture enables installation to low cor-ridors without breaking through a fire tightceiling. This property saves further installa-tion costs as well as time. Each lighting fix-ture has three hours battery back up whichguarantees that the lighting fixtures func-tion with certainty in a case of emergency.

Wikrolux Oy has used leds in its light-ing fixtures ever since 1992. During theyears the leds have improved in respect ofluminous intensity as well as durability. Theadvantages of the leds, such as long servicelife, small size, low power consumption, relatively low heat development andextremely good durability of vibration, are unquestionable compared to othersolutions.

Asthe climate in the Baltic is not the right onefor that throughout the year, the environ-ment has been created: The glass coveredsun deck of Birka Paradise offers tropicalwarmth under an artificial sun, which hasthe nature of the original, only the UV radi-ation is decreased, ca. 90 per cent of theUV rays have been filtered away. In the sum-mer time when the weather is sunny theglass roof can be opened.

“This newbuilding is an excellent ex-ample of our skill and expertise to builddemanding cruise vessels for demandingmarkets” said Jyrki Heinimaa, President ofAker Finnyards.

The exotic atmosphere refers to theSouthern latitudes: the sun deck is evencalled Paradise Beach. There are exclusivepool & spa compartments, bars and res-taurants in the close vicinity.

There is an exotic touch also in thenine restaurants, several bars and two nightclubs with dancing floors. On the sixth deckyou will find the Havanna Cigar Club, onthe fifth Cafè Brazil and Club Copacabana.

There is also a large conference areafor 400 people, a shopping centre, etc.

Birka Paradise is 177 m long and28 m wide comprising eleven decks, fiveof which are dedicated to passenger ac-commodation: there are cabins and suitesfor in all 1,800 passengers. The vessel

hips use electricity to keep pas-sengers comfor table and theship safe and moving. Electricpropulsion systems demand

high power. In fact, manoeuvring con-sumes some two thirds of the electricalpower generated by a cruise ship.

“Many quality and safety issues cul-minate with the electrical system. It is im-por tant that power-generation is not

Ship with enough electrical power to run a town

A ships quality and safetyrest on its electrical systemsThe electrical system of a ship is crucial to its safety and must be 100% functional. A ship may need as much electrical power as asizeable town. The electrical system must have sufficient capacity to maintain redundancy even in the most difficult conditions. Whatis more, highly automated ships require a supply of very high quality electrical power.

Shampered by interruption. Electric propul-sion must function at all times and the shipremain manoeuvrable. In passenger ships, lighting is also crucial to safety. It is veryimportant to passenger comfort, too, as isair conditioning. If the air conditioning incommon areas and cabins fails on a Carib-bean cruise, it will certainly not pass unno-ticed,” says engineer Antti Lehtelä from ABB.

“Loads are also getting larger because

the introduction of electric propulsion sys-tems has led to growing consumption ofelectrical power. Inverter controlled loadsare also increasing, and the hotel side’s de-mand for power is on the increase. Energyis needed for heating, cooling and lighting.Show equipment, for example, consumesa lot of electricity.”

“In cruise ships, the electrical powerconsumption of the hotel side is around

5–10MW and propulsion power may ac-tually exceed 40 MW. Total plant outputmay be as much as 70 MW. Power is gen-erally generated at 6 or 11 kV. In othership types the consumption of the hotelside is obviously much less. In passengersships, restaurants and kitchens use up a largeshare of available power,” Lehtelä explains.

Computers needUPS systems

Eaton Powerware has long experience insupplying UPS systems that provide unin-terrupted power to a wide range of shiptypes. According to sales manager RauliLehtonen, systems are tailored to meet theneeds of requirements and conditions offleets or particular cruise ships.

“On cruise ships UPS devices ensurethat IT systems, for example, are suppliedwith good quality and uninterrupted pow-er. UPS-backed data systems are used toback-up emergency lighting and ensure thatcustomer services, including restaurants, cash registers and gaming machines oper-ate without interruption.”

Navigation is one of the most criticalfunctions on a ship and it must be opera-tional no matter what the conditions.

“The purpose of UPS solutions de-signed for critical environments such asships is to ensure that all functions re-main 100% operable. Ships use Power-ware 9 series systems which are basedon the top-of-the-line double conversiontechnology and protect data and produc-tion systems from all types of electricaldisruption,” says Lehtonen.

Ship’s electrical systemsare cable-connected

“Cables are the backbone connecting aship’s various electrical systems. Cablesused in ships meet extremely demand-ing standards and classification require-ments for ship cabling,” explains ProductEngineer Jari Ijäs from Pirelli Marine Cables.

“Type approval by classification soci-eties is a requirement for ship cables. Togain this approval cables must undergocomprehensive testing to verify that theymeet the requirements laid down in stan-dards and by different classification societ-ies. Standards are revised continually andthis development work will guarantee that

cables will be safe in the future, too.”Thanks to long-term work on devel-

oping materials and structures, Pirelli cablesmeet all the stringent requirements on safe-ty and reliability. “Pirelli’s cable structuresfocus on lightness, compactness and easeof use. As a result, they are also an eco-nomically sound investment. Pirelli offer awide selection that will without doubt meetthe cabling needs of an entire ship,” Ijäsexplains.

Power on the hotel sideof a cruise ship

“The EnstoNet® installation system hasbeen in use since the beginning of the1990s in electrical installations of cruise-ship hotel and restaurant sides,” says Al-lan Ahlgren who is in charge of Ensto-Net® sales.

“Its use in various areas and systemsof cruise ships is increasing as we devel-op new par ts to meet the changingneeds. The latest product is a waterproofcoupling connector series that can beused on outer decks or such areas asengine rooms and kitchens, where highwaterproofness is required from all tech-nical installations.”

The key features in the electrificationof cabins and restaurant facilities are speed, ease and reliability. They can all be achievedwhen an installation method that allows forprefabrication is used. In a single facility thesame type of installation is often needed inseveral locations. “There may be hundredsof cabins, thousands of lighting fixtureswhere installation has indeed been speedy, easy and reliable,” says Ahlgren.

The EnstoNet® installation systemfrom Ensto Building Technology meets ev-ery need of modern electrification. Withprefabrication, the installation system cutsdown installation time substantially. Light-ing fixtures are delivered equipped with acoupling connector so that ready feederwire sets are easy to connect to the fix-tures. The couplings are 100% faultless be-cause each component has been tested atthe plant. Moreover, the logistical benefit isalso remarkable because all parts broughtto the site are used in the installation andthere is practically no waste or surplus.

“Systems and feeders can easily andreliably be kept separate using the dif-ferent colours available in the EnstoNet®

series of coupling connectors or connec-tor types with different mechanical codes.Several different types of lighting fixturesare typically used in passages in cabinareas, and their feeds can easily be dis-tinguished from each other by using co-lour-coded connector series and me-chanical codes for, for example, the feedsof sockets for cleaners. Ships sailing inthe Caribbean also have a mixture ofdifferent voltages in use and it is vital theyare kept separate,” Ahlgren explains.

ccording to an extensive study car-ried out in the USA in 2002(www.corrosioncost.com), the to-tal annual costs caused by corro-

sion to ships in the United States is USD2.7 billion. Some 40% of the total is incurredfrom corrosion prevention of new struc-tures, 30% from maintenance and 30% fromstanding time. The study proposed that athird of these costs could be avoided byexploiting existing information on corrosion.

“The Laboratory of Corrosion andMaterial Chemistry at HUT intends tolaunch a research project to comprehen-sively examine corrosion and preventionthereof of different sections of ships, includ-

ing the hull, pipelines, machinery and pas-senger facilities over their entire life-cycle.Regarding corrosion prevention, the projectwill also deal with design, materials, coatingand the correct use and maintenance ofstructures. There will be a heavy emphasison using existing knowledge,” says Aromaa.

“The objective of the researchproject is to draw up comprehensiveguidelines for the prevention of corro-sion in marine technical structures, cov-ering their entire life-cycle.”

The laboratory has a unique ma-rine corrosion station outside Helsinkion Isosaari island in he Gulf of Finland. The station has facilities for various im-

mersion and climate tests and electro-chemical corrosion tests in the seawa-ter of the Gulf (http://www.hut.fi/Units/Corrosion/Korroosion_Isosaari.htm). Marine technology a focus area

“Marine technology is one of the focusareas of the Laboratory of Corrosion andMaterial Chemistry at HUT. The labora-tory has carried out basic research, ap-plied research and product developmentin the area for more than 30 years,”Aromaa explains.

“We have conducted numerousstudies and various damage surveys for

the Finnish Maritime Administration andthrough it for shipyards and industriesthat use seawater in cooling systems.Under the late Professor Seppo Yläsaari, the laboratory played a decisive role intransferring know-how to practical ap-plications in Finland concerning cathod-ic corrosion prevention systems withexternal power sources used on ships. The systems are now used in a large par tof ships and in industrial seawater pipe-lines and port structures. We have alsotrained staff at the Maritime Administra-tion and various companies in corrosionprevention techniques,” Aromaa says.

“Our expertise also covers indus-trial and marine seawater pipelines andtheir heat exchangers, and corrosion pre-vention and protection. We have stud-ied the use of corrosion inhibitors inseveral different systems. We have stud-ied the use of different organic and inor-ganic coatings to protect structures invarious circumstances.”

Hot galvanisationprovides good protectionagainst corrosion

In marine corrosion protection, hot galva-nisation has established itself as one of theprincipal protection methods. YIT IndustriaOy has manufactured and coated pipelinesand pipe modules since 1976. The methodinvolves the hot galvanisation of pipes aftermanufacture so that the coating is uniformon both the outside and the inside. Some30% of the pipes on a ship – mainly waterand air pipelines – are hot galvanised. Coat-ing is also used as corrosion protection forrailings, stairs and hatches, for example, where the coating is covered with paint foreven better protection.

Zinc is a common coating materialalso on oil drilling platforms, where under-water structures are generally not painted. They receive additional protection fromcathodic anodes, of which there may behundreds of tonnes on a big platform.

Rubber cures pipeline corrosion

“Pipeline corrosion on cruise ships is large-ly the result of difficult conditions: the shipstake their water from the sea and oftenports surrounded by coral reefs, where thewater contains coral sand which erodespipelines,” explains director HannuVesterinen from Kumijaloste Oy.

“Rubberisation has proved to be avery good solution. There are various ma-terials available to suit different needs, such as for ships handling oil. Moreover, rubberisation does not increase fire loadin areas where fire safety is critical.”

”Rubberisation is usually done af-ter the pipeline has been welded to-gether. A raw rubber film of roughly4mm is spread at a temperature ofabout 140º centigrade by vulcanisingso that it is fixed tightly to the interiorsurface of the pipeline. Its adhesionstrength is higher than the tensi lestrength of rubber.”

he rebuilt rear of the vessel pro-vides room for two propulsionsystems instead of one as earli-er. This improves vessel move-

ment and guarantees sufficient power need-ed for towing and winter navigation, irre-spective of ice conditions.

The main propulsion on the m/s Seiliis controlled by Vacon’s liquid-cooled driveswith a total power of 2.3 MW. Six VaconNXP drives are controlling the steering gear, and two regenerative liquid-cooled NXPdrives are controlling the main propulsionequipment. The new dynamic positioningsystem allows m/s Seili to keep its positionautomatically without anchoring.

The owner, the Finnish Maritime Ad-ministration, chose Vacon’s regenerative liq-uid-cooled drives as they require only smallspace for assembly and no additional filtersare needed onboard to approve power qual-ity. In Vacon drives, harmonic voltage distor-tion with full load has been under 2%. Thus,it is clearly below the general level of 5%.

The Vacon regenerative drive hasbeen developed especially for applicationsrequiring continuous braking. The regener-ative drive produces practically harmonic-free energy that can be fed back into thesupply. It also actively compensates the sup-ply’s power factor.

Generator powerclose to converter power

Onboard m/s Seili, three 820 kVA Catepil-lar generators produce a total of 2460 kVA.As the converter load has a power factor

Harmonic-free EnergyPropulsions on Seili Controlled by

Vacon´s Liquid-cooled Drives

Since March 2004, m/s Seili has been sailing again in the Gulf of Finland, powered with Vacon liquid-cooled mainpropulsion drives which save space and energy

close to 1, the continuous generator pow-er is approximately 2400 kW. The two pro-pulsion drives have a power of 1100 kWeach, and the steering gears include sixdrives in total with a power of 15 kW each.

Two of the steering gear drives arecontinuously running hydraulic oil pumpsand the other four are running the steer-ing gears. The hotel load is approximately150 kW.

At a crash stop, the propulsion driveswill hit the current limit and consume a totalof 2 x 1100 kW; steering gears are at fullload (90 kW) and the lights are flickering. This is not surprising, as the propulsion, steering and hotel load reach the amountof the total available generator power.

The use of frequency converterswould normally cause problems in harmon-

ics and EMC issues. To avoid building a sep-arate clean power net for 400 V, it was de-cided that a 690 V/400 V transformer wouldbe used instead. This would only be possi-ble if the harmonic content of the 690 Vnet was low because sensitive navigationequipment, among others, will not other-wise work properly. Thanks to Vacon’s re-generative drive technology, the powerfactor is ~1, harmonic voltage distortionis below 2% and current distor tion isabout 3%.

As seen also in the wave forms, theharmonic content both in current andin voltage is extremely low. Additionally, the Vacon drives will limit the outputcurrent if the load exceeds the limit, aswould be the case in a crash stop situa-tion due to hydrodynamic forces.

ureau Veritas has launched acode of practice and cer tifica-tion scheme for the manage-ment of safety and environ-

mental protection in ports. The IPSEMCode (International Code for Safety andEnvironmental Protection Managementin Port) is intended to help managersimprove por t safety and environmentalprotection, with additional benefits ofimproving staff motivation, reducing insur-ance premiums and improving the imageof the port.

Bureau Veritas Safety andEnvironmental Code for Ports

The IPSEM Code sets out a schemefor diagnosing the port or terminal’s weak-nesses in safety and environment manage-ment, and can include consultancy supportto rectify those weaknesses. Policy, manage-ment processes, infrastructure, equipment, communication and waste disposal are allcovered. International standards such asISO14000, OHSAS 18001, APELL and ISO9001 are incorporated into the Code. Portauthorities are awarded a five year certifi-cate following audit of the system, with an-nual inspections to maintain validity.

“This independently audited codeand cer tification scheme is unique, andfor the first time, it gives port operatorsa defined structure within which to man-age safety and the environment, andproof that they are doing it correctly,”says Alain-Michel Chauvel, responsiblefor the project in the BV’s marine divi-sion. “We have combined our experi-ence of shipping and property risk anal-ysis and quality certification to developa code which brings por t operators realbenefits.”

ll the vessels will incorporate pi-oneering features–– two slowspeed engines, twin screws andreliquefaction plant. The GTT

Mark III cargo containment design will beapplied for these vessels.

The vessels are scheduled for deliverybetween last quarter of 2007 and first quar-ter of 2008. They are part of Qatar’s plannedLNG shipbuilding program which ultimate-ly could comprise over 50 LNG carriers. Many of these will deliver Qatar LNG tothe UK and US, and also Europe and Asia.

World’s largest LNG carriersto be classed by DNV

New York-based, Overseas Shipholding Group, one of the premier energy transportation companies in the world, together with its partner Qatar Gas Transport Company, has recently signed a contract for the largest LNG carriers

on order to date. Two of these 216 000 m3 vessels will be constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries and two atSamsung Heavy Industries – all four will be built to DNV class.

AIn 1962 DNV invented the double

corrugated membrane cargo containmentsystem which was patented and later de-veloped further by the French. The doublecorrugated membrane is today used asprimary gas barrier in the Mark III system.

In its continuing efforts to serve andsupport the LNG industry, DNV recentlyaccepted an invitation to become an asso-ciate member of The Society of Interna-tional Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators(SIGTTO).

The of the membership of SIGTTO

to DNV compliments the increasing asso-ciation DNV has with many of the majorLNG players throughout the world.

At the same time, the membershipenables DNV to make the experiencegained from considerable investment inresearch and development available to awider audience for the benefit of theLNG industry.

ARKI (Arctic Offshore Structures) is a do-mestic study pursuing research on ice en-gineering technology that was started atVTT twenty years ago. The project is fi-nanced by the National Technology Agencyof Finland (TEKES), the Finnish MaritimeAdministration, the Finnish Road Adminis-tration and the Technical Research Centreof Finland (VTT). The project supports VTT’sparticipation in international co-operationon ice engineering research. The objectivesinclude transfer of the state-of-the-art in-formation for Finnish companies develop-ing marine structures for ice-bound waters.A material model has been developed forthe numerical simulation of the ice failureprocesses.

ing connections between shipyards, ship-ping companies, subcontractors and ratinginstitutions and tries to promote co-oper-ation between EU shipyards. Education andtraining issues, innovation management ofshipyards and contacts with other projectsand industries will be addressed in sepa-rate projects. “This ensures that the Inter-SHIP project results can be rapidly imple-mented to benefit the whole Europeanmarine community,” says Airaksinen.

InterSHIP a consortium ofseven shipyards

The InterSHIP process started in October2004, when European shipbuilders launched

their working plan LeaderSHIP 2015 tostrengthen the competitive advantage ofthe European shipbuilding industry.

On the initiative of the Euroyardsgroup and following the recommendationsfrom the LeaderSHIP 2015 project, the Eu-ropean shipbuilding industry launched aEUR 38 million integrated InterSHIP project. The force behind InterSHIP is the group ofseven leading European shipyards, AkerFinnyards, Fincantieri Cantieri Navali ItalianiS.p.A., Chantiers de l‘Atlantique, Izar Co-strucciones Navales, S.A., Jos. L. MeyerGmbH., Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaftand Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo.

The group members will invest EUR19 million in the project over four years

and the European Commission will awardthe same amount from the Commission’s6rh framework programme for researchand technology.

Most of the work will be commis-sioned from technology subcontractorsmaking up the European marine industrynetwork. Over 28 small and medium-sizedcompanies will participate in the ongoingsub-projects in the first 18 months.

The extent of the project and wideparticipation of the marine industry on Eu-ropean level will ensure the volume need-ed to increase and maintain the technolo-gy leadership of the European shipbuildingindustry.
