I hope this letter finds you and your daughters enjoying the leisurely pace of the summer months. Although there are still many more lazy days to enjoy, it is time to think about the school year ahead. I would guess that your daughters have mentioned it maybe once or twice! The campus is alive with the usual summer activities that camps and workshops bring and we are busy in the office scheduling, planning, updating and organizing our way into the 2015–2016 school year. I welcome you to Bryn Mawr’s 131st school year, with a special welcome to the new families who will be joining the Lower School. We are so pleased that you chose Bryn Mawr for your daughters and we look forward to get- ting to know each of them as they begin their Bryn Mawr journey. The end of the school year brought changes to our faculty. As I reported to you in late spring, both fourth grade teachers, Madeleine Keller and Sandi Strouss, retired after many years of teaching at Bryn Mawr. As a result of their leaving there have been some reassignments of teaching responsibilities. Jeannie Emala will move from fifth grade to teach fourth grade with Renuka Gandhi, who has taught first grade for the past three years. Nina Emala Bradley will move from second grade to first grade and Jackie Burr, the 2014–2015 Wilgis Fellow, will join Katherine Gilbert as a fifth grade homeroom teacher. The teachers are excited about their new responsibilities and are busy this summer preparing for the year. I am pleased to introduce to you our new faculty member, Erin Brooks. Erin is the 2015–2016 Wilgis Fellow and she will teach pre-first with Meghann McMahon. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University and for the past two years has been a pre-school teacher at A Small World in Owings Mills. Erin is no stranger to Bryn Mawr, as she helps coach the Upper School Cross Country team. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Brooks to the Lower School. Although they are not new faces, two faculty members will return to school with new names. First Grade teacher Nina Emala married Zach Bradley on June 13, and two weeks later French teacher Lucy Shepley tied the knot with Scott DeHaven. Congratulations to Mrs. Bradley and Madame DeHaven! Speaking of teach- ers, I know your daughters are eager to know whom their homeroom teachers will be, and they will not have to wait long. The final homeroom lists will be sent to you in a separate email on Friday, July 17. In an effort to coordinate activities and schedules with the Middle and Upper Schools, the Lower School will go to a 10-day cycle this year. I feel sure the girls will be quick to catch on to the days of the week being referred to by number as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc. It will take a little patience and getting used to, but I know we can rely on the girls to keep us straight! Another change you will notice is in our Extended Day Program, which will now be available until 6:00 p.m. We hope this helps families as they make plans for the coming year. A 2015–2016 Lower School calendar is included in this mailing, and I would like to draw your attention to some important activities taking place for you and your daughters as the year begins. You will be hearing more about these events as the school year gets underway, but I wanted to be sure they get on your calendars now.

Dear Lower School Parents,

Greetings from the Lower School!

We are so pleased that you chose Bryn Mawr for your daughters and we look forward to get-ting to know each of them as they begin their Bryn Mawr journey.

Speaking of teach-ers, I know your daughters are eager to know whom their homeroom teachers will be, and they will not have to wait long.

Tuesday, September 1 – Orientation will take place this day for all girls new to the Lower School from kin-dergarten through fifth grade. Girls entering kindergarten, pre-first and first grade have scheduled appoint-ments that are included in this mailing. Orientation for girls new to second through fifth grade will be held from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. The girls will have an opportunity to ease into their new school, meet their teachers as well as other girls new to their grades, and see their classrooms.

Wednesday September 2 – This is the first full day of school for everyone in kindergarten through Grade 12.

Wednesday, September 16 – The faculty and I will look forward to welcoming you to the new school year on Parents’ Evening, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in Centennial Hall.

Friday, September 25 – I invite you to join us for Lower School Family Picnic from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on the Lower School field.

You have a few attachments to peruse in this mailing that tell you about everything from the Recycled Uniform Sale and carpool procedures to after school activities and Parents’ Association volunteer opportu-nities. All of the information is organized under your daughter's grade. If you have more than one daughter in the Lower School be sure to click on each girl’s grade. Please note that some forms have a “due by” date requiring your signature and a prompt return to Bryn Mawr. (Health forms were due on July 14 so if you have not already done so, please be sure you get them in to the nurse’s office as soon as possible. Students can-not begin school if we do not have their completed health forms.) One item that will not come electronical-ly, but will be sent home to you in late August, is your carpool sign with your family name. It is to be placed on your car’s visor or dashboard so it is easily visible to the teachers on afternoon carpool duty.

This letter is the first of many written communications I will have with you throughout the year. Each Thurs-day you will receive the Thursday Letter by email and you can also access it via the Parent Portal on Bryn Mawr’s website. It will contain news of Lower School happenings and information about important dates and events. Communication between school and home is key to ensuring your daughter's success in school. Please be sure to look for the letter every Thursday.

The summer is still young so enjoy these days with your daughters. Soon enough the alarm clock will rule our lives. It is, however, always exciting to think of what lies ahead for your girls as the school year begins and they prepare for another milestone in their lives. We feel so fortunate to be a part of those milestones! We look forward to a happy and successful year with your daughters.

Warmly,

Patricia M. NothsteinLower School Director

Dear Lower School Families, We hope you are enjoying a relaxing summer and that you may even be anticipating the excitement of the first days back at school in the fall. As we look forward to a safe and productive school year, we will ask you to please follow the Lower School carpool procedures beginning on Wednesday, September 2, 2015. The carpool procedures were implemented to better ensure the safety of our young students as they arrive and dismiss from school, to alleviate carpool traffic congestion in the neighborhood, and to provide for a smooth and orderly flow of carpool vehicles as they enter and exit the school along Boxhill Lane and the Lower School driveway. We thank you in advance for adhering to the procedures and being alert to the changes in traffic patterns when you come to school in the fall.

Lower School Carpool ProceduresEffective Wednesday, September 2, 2015

• A single carpool line will be used and will form on the west side (Bryn Mawr side) of Boxhill Lane, north of the Lower School driveway entrance. The place where the carpool line forms will be clearly marked, and cars will turn right only from Boxhill Lane into the Lower School driveway. No cars will be permitted to turn left from Boxhill Lane into the Lower School driveway.

• The lead cars in the carpool line should proceed along the Lower School driveway, keeping to the right, to the area at the top of the Lower School portico that is marked “Line Begins Here.” Students may be dropped off and picked up in this designated area only.

• Once you have dropped off your daughter please proceed in the same lane under the portico; do not get out of line to drive in front of a car from which students are exiting.

• Cars leaving the Lower School driveway must turn right onto Boxhill Lane. No cars will be permitted to turn left onto Boxhill Lane from the Lower School driveway.

• Carpool procedures are in effect for both morning and afternoon carpools between 7:30–8:00 a.m. and 2:40–4:00 p.m. and during the hours designated for special school dismissals. The 3:30 p.m. carpool is not allowed access to the Lower School driveway until after the 2:45 p.m. carpool has ended. Cars arriving for the 3:30 p.m. carpool may begin to line up on Boxhill Lane at 3:10 p.m. When the 2:45 p.m. carpool has concluded, the security guard will then direct the 3:30 p.m. carpool vehicles onto the driveway.

• For the safety and security of the students, drivers will not be permitted to drop off or pick up students anywhere along Boxhill Lane, at an undesignated area along the Lower School drive-way, or on the Gordon Drive.

We look forward to seeing you in late August. Again, many thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Traffic Safety At Bryn Mawr

As we prepare for the new school year, we ask you to review the following topics related to traffic flow in and around The Bryn Mawr School. Adherence to these policies and procedures is essential to the safety of our students as they are dropped off and picked up at school. Bryn Mawr’s location in a residential neighborhood makes it necessary that all drivers and pedestrians pay close attention to the traffic patterns and regulations designed specifically to make traffic flow smoothly and safely. In addition, the school requests that all drivers be respectful of our neighborhood residents, taking particular care not to block their driveways. SPEED on all neighboring streets should never exceed 25 MPH. During drop-off and pick-up times, 10 MPH is the safest speed.

MELROSE AVENUE remains closed for drop-off and pick-up.

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Lower School Administration Building. They may be picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall if the Lower School Office has been notified ahead of time. The Gordon Drive should not be used for carpool.

MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall. This is a NO PARKING area, and cars left unattended will be ticketed. (See below for details.)

ALL PEDESTRIANS must use campus sidewalks and crosswalks. No one is to walk in the driveways or roads.

ON-CAMPUS PARKING is limited. All numbered spaces are reserved for faculty and staff. Visitors should park in the designated visitor parking spaces that are available in front of the Gatehouse and east of the Gordon entrance. The Gordon driveway is for faculty/staff and Admission visitors parking only. ALL-SCHOOL EVENTS bring many cars to the streets surrounding the school. Please look first to park in designated spaces at Bryn Mawr. Those who must park off campus should remember that they are in a residential neighborhood and be appropriately courteous when they are driving, parking, or walking.

Your support and help in providing for the safe arrival and departure of our students is greatly appreciated. Thank you as well for driving courteously on campus and in our surrounding neighborhood.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact director of security Terry Detorie at [email protected] or 410.323.8800 x1616. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Dear Bryn Mawr Families,

Bryn Mawr uses several computer software applications and web-based services which are hosted in the cloud provided by third party vendors. These applications and services offer many educational advantages including flexibility for teachers to select the best resources to complement their curriculum, a wide range of Internet-based solutions and tools that can be quickly accessed anytime and anywhere, and increased opportunities for sharing, collaboration and interactive learning.

In accordance with federal regulations included in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), parental approval is required for The Bryn Mawr School to continue to be able to provide your student with the most effective web-based tools and applications for learning.

For our students to use these programs and services, certain personal identifying information, including the student’s name and email address, must be provided to the website operator. Students will be able to main-tain individual and personalized online access and files by providing this information to these operators. Importantly, Bryn Mawr only chooses to partner with service providers that do not share personal identifying information. Under federal law, these websites must provide parental notification and obtain parental con-sent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. The law permits schools such as Bryn Mawr to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the website operator.

Bryn Mawr remains committed to protecting the privacy of our students and has established practices to do so. We will exercise caution in choosing third party services and will rigorously review each vendor’s privacy policy. Bryn Mawr will continue to address Internet safety and privacy rights with students during the year. Furthermore, Bryn Mawr will hold information sessions for parents about Internet safety and privacy rights early in the school year. The Bryn Mawr School Acceptable Use PolicyLower, Middle and Upper School Students and Parents/Legal Guardians

The Bryn Mawr School (“Bryn Mawr”) has adopted this Acceptable Use Policy (the “Policy”) to govern use of its computer network and the software and other related computing resources that Bryn Mawr provides or makes available to its students or their parents. This Policy, which Bryn Mawr may update from time to time, aims to ensure the prudent and appropriate use of Bryn Mawr’s computing network and resources.

It is a privilege to have access to the Bryn Mawr network and computing resources. This Policy therefore ap-plies to all Lower, Middle and Upper school students and their parents/legal guardians when they are using computers, Internet access, or online services provided by Bryn Mawr. Personal laptops connected to such computers, access, or online services also must adhere to this Policy. In addition, this Policy is applicable whether or not it is during school hours, and whether or not the usage occurs on the Bryn Mawr campus. The application of the foregoing shall be understood to include, without limitation, email, chat, instant mes-saging, texting, gaming, media consumption, and social networking sites.

The Bryn Mawr School owns or has rights to all systems, software, and other materials stored on the network or in its online domains. Access to and use of these resources is therefore limited to academic and other school authorized purposes. Bryn Mawr does not grant and otherwise reserves all other rights on its own behalf and on behalf of its suppliers and licensors. In particular, Bryn Mawr does not grant any express or implied right to any student, parent, or other person or entity to use Bryn Mawr’s name or logo without permission.

A violation of the Acceptable Use Policy is a violation of the Honor Code.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Each student shall maintain the integrity of the school's computer software, computer hardware, periph-erals, electronic mail system, and online services. Each user is personally responsible for all uses and contents of her account. For this reason, a student must not give, share, or provide access to her pass-word or log-in procedures, and may not distribute private information about others or themselves.

2. Each student shall therefore use her email address and Bryn Mawr’s computing resources in a respon-sible manner consistent with Bryn Mawr’s standards of behavior and this policy. This includes but is not limited to:• Using all school computers, software, hardware, peripherals, systems and services only in furtherance

of a student’s education and activities at Bryn Mawr;• Not taking any action, which interferes with or disrupts Bryn Mawr computing network or resources or

the operation thereof;• Communicating only in ways that are kind and respectful and not publishing or republishing state-

ments or material that defame, harass, abuse, stalk, threaten, or infringe on the rights of others (in-cluding, without limitation, sending or displaying statements or material that contain vulgar, obscene, profane, or otherwise objectionable language or images);

• Obtaining permission from members of the Bryn Mawr community before sharing or posting online personally identifying information;

Page 17: The final homeroom lists will be sent to you in a …...January 4 Monday Classes resume January 5 Tuesday Pre-First Parent Coffee – 8:00 a.m. January 12 Tuesday 1st Grade Parent

• Not impersonating any other person or entity, whether actual or fictitious, including employees and representatives of Bryn Mawr;

• Saving only educational files on the network or on online domains;• Using and maintaining in its original form only school purchased, licensed or distributed software on

the equipment provided by the school;• Keeping all educationally inappropriate materials or files harmful to the integrity of the network from

entering the school;• Reporting all violations, including threatening or discomforting materials, of this Policy to a teacher or

network administrator;• Not sending spam, chain letters, or other mass unsolicited mailings; and• Not using, sending, or displaying unauthorized materials or any other material that infringes on the

intellectual property rights or privacy of another.

3. Students understand that the use of Bryn Mawr email or a Bryn Mawr email address reflects their con-nection to the community and any misuse of this resource constitutes a violation of this Acceptable Use Policy. Students therefore understand and agree that files, records, and messages communicated using a Bryn Mawr email address or residing on any Bryn Mawr owned, leased or licensed system, device, or software are non-confidential to and otherwise reviewable by Bryn Mawr, technology, academic, and administrative officials for all purposes. Bryn Mawr reserves the right to take other action in response to actions or omissions that Bryn Mawr believes in good faith violate this Policy and/or are potentially unlawful. If a violation of this Policy occurs or is reasonably likely to occur, Bryn Mawr may, in its sole discretion, delete the unacceptable file, record, or message and/or terminate use of the Bryn Mawr network and other computing resources. Moreover, any information obtained by monitoring, reviewing, or recording may be subject to review by law enforcement organizations in connection with investigation or prosecution of possible criminal activity on or associated with Bryn Mawr’s resources. Bryn Mawr will comply with all effective court orders and subpoenas involving requests for such information.

4. Students understand that their use of Bryn Mawr computing network and resources may enable or facilitate access to other sites on the World Wide Web. You understand that these sites are maintained by third parties over which Bryn Mawr exercises no control.

5. For any Bryn Mawr issued laptops or laptops connected to any computing resource on or available at or through the Bryn Mawr campus:• Students are required to make all reasonable efforts to keep their laptops free from virus and other

destructive materials. If a student’s computer becomes infected, she must seek immediate help from Bryn Mawr’s technology department.

• Students are required to bring their laptop to school each day, in good working order, charged, and with a power adapter and any other necessary accessories. Bryn Mawr will provide charging stations for laptops wherever possible.

• Students are required to back up their computer files which might include using an online backup system such as Google Drive or Dropbox and/or an external hard drive.

• Students are required to protect and carry their laptops to, from and on campus in a case designed to protect it.

• Students are permitted to customize their laptop settings (background screens, control panel op-tions) provided such settings are appropriate to a school environment and otherwise consistent with this Policy.

• Students may install software that they own on their laptops.• Students must lock their laptops in their lockers when not in use. This includes, but is not limited to,

convocations, assemblies, lunch, etc.

Page 18: The final homeroom lists will be sent to you in a …...January 4 Monday Classes resume January 5 Tuesday Pre-First Parent Coffee – 8:00 a.m. January 12 Tuesday 1st Grade Parent

• All laptops must prominently bear the student’s name.• Students are subject to disciplinary procedures for violation of this Policy.• In the event of laptop loss or theft, the student’s parent or guardian is expected to replace the computer.

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Bryn Mawr will provide instruction in the appropriate use of network and the online services that the school makes directly available.

2. Bryn Mawr will provide resources about the appropriate use of the network and online services and about the issues of personal safety and privacy.

3. Bryn Mawr will discourage and take steps to prevent access to educationally inappropriate materials.

4. Bryn Mawr may take appropriate disciplinary or other action for student violation of this Policy or other abuse of Bryn Mawr’s computers or computer systems and network.

PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

1. The parent/guardian signs this Policy in order for the student in his or her care to be provided access to Bryn Mawr’s network and equipment.

2. The parent/guardian understands the terms and conditions of this Policy and that there may be disciplinary and other consequences if the student misuses the Bryn Mawr network or online services, or otherwise violates this Policy.

3. The parent/guardian acknowledges that there is content on the Internet that he or she may not wish the student to access, and remains responsible for his or her student’s use of Bryn Mawr’s computers, network, software, hardware, peripherals, systems, and services.

4. The parent/guardian consents to the use by the student of Bryn Mawr’s online resources. A copy of these online resources utilized by Bryn Mawr can be found at http://www.brynmawrschool.org/technology. This consent should be understood to apply to any changes to the online resources made available and to be provided by Bryn Mawr (as identified at http://www.brynmawrschool.org/technology).

5. The parent/guardian understands that in order for students to use certain online programs and services made available through Bryn Mawr’s network, certain personally identifiable information must be pro-vided to the provider of such online program or service, including for example, the student’s name and school email address. Under federal law, providers of these online programs and services must provide parental notification and obtain parental/guardian consent before collecting personally identifiable information from students under the age of thirteen. Bryn Mawr is permitted under law to facilitate the provision of this notice and the gathering of this consent to the collection of personally identifiable information from students in lieu of the provider providing such notice and seeking such consent directly from each parent or guardian. Please note therefore that acceptance of this Policy will also constitute notice to and consent by you to the collection and use by these providers of the personally identifiable

Join the Parents’ AssociationBryn Mawr relies upon its parent volunteers to support the curricular, social and

fundraising activities of the school. Becoming a volunteer at Bryn Mawr is a wonderful

way to meet parents, staff, alumnae and others affiliated with the school.

After-Prom PartyHelp plan a terrific and safe event for junior and senior girls immediately following the Prom. Vol-unteers assist with planning food, entertainment, prizes, and decorations, and night owls are need-ed to chaperone the party. The committee meets a few times from February through April.

Annual FundAnnual Fund volunteers receive full training in how to successfully rally parents to raise vital funds for the current school year. Phonathons take place in October, and volunteers are asked to work one or two evenings, three hours per evening.

BazaarThe annual Bazaar is held on the first Saturday in May. Over 100 volunteers are needed to work hourly shifts at the day’s many activities. Volun-teers are also needed to serve on the Bazaar Planning Committee, which meets monthly from January through April.

Bryn MawrketBe a part of Bryn Mawr’s on-campus store! Help out by volunteering for a 3-hour shift on the schedule of your choice: weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

Faculty & Staff AppreciationIn February, we devote a week to saying “Thank You” to our wonderful faculty and staff. Vol-unteers are needed to serve on the luncheon planning committee, as well as to help with decorating, serving lunch, baking desserts, and monitoring Lower School classrooms.

LibraryVolunteers are asked to assist in the Middle/Upper School Library as needed throughout the year.

Middle School MixersBryn Mawr hosts annual mixers that allow middle school students from several area schools to join together for a fun night of dancing and other activi-ties. Volunteers are needed to chaperone as well as to set-up, clean and provide food donations.

Picture DayVolunteers are needed for hourly shifts to help on Picture Day and make-up Picture Days in the Lower, Middle and Upper schools.
