Why take part in Kick Butts Day? The tobacco industry or Big Tobacco as they’re known sell cigarettes ,and their goal is to make as much money as possible by getting new custom-ers… YOU! Here are some quotes from them... “…the base of our business is the high school student.” “Today’s teenager is tomorrow’s potential regular customer.” “(We) will not support a youth smoking programme which discourages young people from smoking.” “We don’t smoke that s**t, we just sell it. We reserve that right for the young, the poor, the black and the stupid.” “It is important to know as much as possible about teenage smoking patterns and attitudes.” “If you are really and truly not going to sell to children, you are going to be out of business in 30 years.” More info: www.thefilterwales.org/fact-bank/

Cut Films is a film competition where you make a short film or advert (under 2 mins) which persuades your friends not to smoke.

Everyone knows smoking kills, yet thousands of young people still try smoking every year in Wales. Cut Films wants you to get the message across in a creative way!

Enter the film you make on Kick Butts Day to the official Cut Films site and there’s a chance you could win some great prizes – iPads, cameras and Amazon vouchers - and an evening at a glitzy awards bash at BAFTA HQ in London.

All you need to do is this: Research and plan it. Film it using a video camera, computer or just your phone. Upload it to their website. And share it with your friends.

Your film can be about anything to do with smoking, from ‘the tobacco industry’ to ‘what’s in a cigarette.’

Almost every product has a list of ingredients somewhere on the label. So isn’t it strange that there isn’t a list of ingredients on a pack of cigarettes? If there were, it would be a really, really long list! There are over 4000 chemicals in

a single puff of cigarette smoke and over 60 of them are known carcinogens (that means they cause cancer)!

There’s a lot more than tobacco in cigarettes and the smoke. There are thousands of chemicals that can also be found in everyday household products like battery acid, nail varnish remover and mothballs! For this activity, you can mix bits of different ingredients to show how disgusting the contents of cigarettes really are and exposes the truth. Or you can create a poster that tells others about these ingredients and what they do.

There are lots of facts and figures to do with smoking and the numbers it kills every year. You can create a stunt with these numbers or come up with comparisons such as: 30 children in Wales try smoking everyday - that’s a

classroom full of kids 5450 people die every year in Wales because of a

smoking-related illness - that’s someone every 2 hours Smoking 20 a day for a year will cost almost £3000 -

that’s enough to buy a pretty decent 2nd hand car Each cigarette cuts a person’s life down by 7 to 10

minutes, not including the time they waste smoking it For example, we did a stunt a few years ago where we laid out 500 pairs of shoes in the Bay to symbolise the numbers who die every month across the UK. More info: www.thefilterwales.org/help-stop-smoking/the-cost-of-smoking/

You’re not limited to any particular game or sport, it’s just a case of using what areas and equipment you have and making the most of it. Also remember we’re in Wales - it will probably be soggy out, especially in March!

Theme your event

The theme is about standing up to the tobacco companies who want to make you their next customer. Think about how you can relate this to you event.

Advertise your event

Put up flyers around your community, invite friends, family and the public to watch the game.

Decorate the area

Hang banners and posters containing tobacco facts. Have a display table for info, props and resources for those interested in becoming tobacco-free. (We can supply these if booked)

For a list of our props, see ‘Resources’ page

Graffiti If you’ve got a spare wall or floor space in/around your youth centre or school, why not get permission to graffiti it? It doesn’t have to be permanent either, it can be done with chalks or washable paint. Plan what you want to do and how you’re going to do it so you can have all your supplies ready for the day. Note wall If you haven’t got a wall that’s suitable for graffiti, how about covering one by pinning/blue tacking it with cheap plain wallpaper and asking questions like ‘why do people smoke?’ or ‘what does smoking do to the body?’ then get your friends to write their answers in different colours or by drawing pictures.

Your posters can be on almost anything to do with smoking and the tobacco industry! And you can decorate them with almost anything too - collage it with newspaper, stickers and magazines, colour it with pens, paints… Or you could write a poem or song and write it out in big letters so everyone can read it. Ideas Design a tombstone - smoking

makes a person’s life shorter by 20 years

Draw the different things someone could buy if they didn't smoke

Draw the human body and label it with the effects smoking has

Write a song or rap about smoking Write a poem or letter from the point of view of

someone whose loved one has died from smoking

A litter pick is a great way to help your area, make a change and raise awareness of your group and your cause. It’s also super cheap and easy to do. Smoking-related litter is the number one cause of rubbish, with cigarette butts, empty packs and lighters thrown away everyday on streets across Wales. It takes 20 years for a cigarette butt to decompose meaning it’ll be stuck on the ground for a very, very long

time. Cigarette butts also endanger wildlife and young children who could pick them up so maybe you could go to the local park and do your litter pick there? Keep Wales Tidy (www.keepwalestidy.org) can supply you with the equipment and take the collected litter away afterwards. More info: www.thefilterwales.org/campaigns/smoking-is-rubbish/
