FROM THE PRINCIPALWelcome to this month’s newsletter.

• Our HSC 2015 students have completed their public exams. Ex-parent and our current Presiding Officer, Louise Morgan ensured sound management of the exams. Students and teachers’ anxieties lessened with the completion of each exam. By this time,Year 12, 2015 students should have returned their school resources and families finalised all school accounts.

• It was impressive to see so many parents at last month’s HSC 2016 Information Evening– a great support for their children as they commence their HSC journey this term. Congratulations to CAPA Captain Hannah O’Loughlin and Events Captain Charlotte Bull who were introduced at a recent assembly. Nominations and voting are now underway for our Sports and House Captains. All our senior leadership team, along with the 2016 SRC representatives, will receive their badges at next month’s Presentation Day.

• Presentation Day will have a slight change this year with the inclusion of guestspeaker, Glen Gerreyn, who has led motivational workshops for our students in recent years. As Presentation Day recognises achievement and excellence within our school community, as well as, inspiring all students ‘to reach for the stars’, Glen’s presentation will be a welcome and productive inclusion in the program. Families and all students are very welcome to attend this very special occasion.

• Whilst all Year 7 to 10 students will have completed their final year exams and assessments by November 20, students’ academic program continues until December 16. Additionally, programs including Achievers’ Camp and celebratory occasions such as Year Assemblies and Sports Presentation Day are scheduled throughout the remainder of the term.

• This term is important for all of our students but particularly for Year 10 students as they will participate in programs that are essential for their transition to Years 11 and 12. Whilst Year 10 Academic Reviews and students’ individual interviews have been completed, other mandatory programs including Peer Support and ‘All My Own Work’ are scheduled after the Year 10 Exams.

• Congratulations to our Visual Arts Teachers and Young in Art winners and participants who are featured in this newsletter. Once again, Top of the Hill, one of our leading transition programs, has been a great success due to organiser, Ms Jess Austin and our teachers and students who have led various and very successful workshops for our visiting primary students.

• Together with 2016 Year 7 Advisor Julia Brierty, our school community is looking forward to welcoming our prospective Year 7 students and their families onOrientation Day on Thursday December 3. As you can see from the enclosed invitation, that evening, all parents are invited to an evening of celebration including the opening of the refurbished Theatrette and the annual P&C Drinks on the Balconyof the Phil Daniels Pavilion

• Head Teachers Susan Turnbull and Elena Goulousis and Learning and Support Teacher Jess Austin will lead the Teacher Presentation at this month’s P&C Meetingwhich is scheduled to commence at 7pm on Monday, November 16 in the Staff Common Room (entry via the main gate). The presentation will focus on our NAPLAN data and the way in which teachers utilise this and other data to promote student engagement and achievement.

• Last P&C Meeting, it was great to have the opportunity to introduce Ms Julia Brierty, the 2016 Year Advisor and have the presence and participation of two of our new School Captains: Kaitlin Love and Jake Jamieson – hopefully, this latter initiative will continue!

P&C REPORTSeveral members of the executive recently met with Mr Anthony Roberts, MP Member for Lane Cove, and representatives from the Department of Education planning department. With the recent media interest in school capacity in our area, and the increase in housing developments, we wanted to discuss ways in which our school can develop to meet the needs of the community. This was a very positive discussion and we were informed that the Department of Education will be holding meetings early in 2016 with representatives from local schools to further discuss these important issues.

At our last P&C meeting, Martin Brown gave a very interesting and useful presentation about internet security, particularly as it relates to our students. We were very pleased to have Kaitlin Love and Jake Jamieson, members of the Student Leadership team, at the meeting and welcome the participation of our student leaders in the activities of the P&C.

Please plan to attend our annual Christmas Drinks on the Balcony on Thursday 3rd

December (see the flyer in this issue for details). The refurbished Theatrette will also be opened on this evening.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday November 16th at 7pm with coffee and tea from 6.30pm. There will be a presentation on the 2015 NAPLAN results. I hope to see you there.

Top of the Hill 2015On Monday the 9th November and Wednesday 11th November, Hunters Hill High School ran its annual transition program ‘Top of the Hill’. This year we hosted over 100 students from across the Northern Sydney region, including our partner primary schools – Gladesville Public School, Boronia Park Public School, Lane Cove West Public School, Lane Cove Public School, Hunters Hill Public School, Greenwich Public School and Mowbray Public School.

The program not only aims to give primary school students a “taste test” of what high school life is like, but more importantly to show them the inclusive and supportive community they can expect when they attend Hunters Hill High School in the future.

Over the two days, the students were led by Hunters Hill High School students from Years 7 and 9 who took them to Dance, Science, Drama, Music, Hospitality and Design and Technology classes. The classrooms and playground were full of smiles and laughter as the younger students got to see what our students experience on a daily basis.

Many thanks to our specialist teachers who ensured that our young guests had great stories and memories to take home:

• Mr Anthony Wilson for Design and Technology• Ms Ruth Simpson for Drama• Mr David Aubusson for Science• Ms Isabelle Cullen, Ms Jenny Deagle and Mr Mick Hanna for Music• Ms Kamilla Hansen-Mackie for Dance• Mr Greg Wade, Ms Belinda Woolford and Mr Joshua Gane for Sport

Special mention to our Year 9 guides who showed excellent leadership skills and care in supporting the younger students guiding them around our beautiful grounds:

Ben Jones, Emma Scott-Stevenson, Royce Carnelutti, Lexus Joubert and Makayla Ward

To our younger visitors….We hope to see you next year!

Jess AustinTop of the Hill

YOUNG IN ART WINNERS 2015

ANOTHER GREAT COMMUNITY SUCCESS FOR THE

‘Young in Art’ Exhibition The opening was held on Wednesday night, 21ST October with students’ artwork available to the general public until Sunday, October 25th. The night was a huge success. The Boys Dance Group, including Riley Nylund, Jai Gosselin, Spyridon Mylonas, Hugo Hirst and Harry Straw performed an exciting rhythmical crowd pleasing opening act. The presentation of winners followed, with Hunters Hill High School accepting four of the thirteen awards. Deputy Principal Michael Murphy and CAPA Head Teacher, Ms Deagle were part of the appreciative audience.

The Hunters Hill ‘Young in Art’ Exhibition grew out of the annual Hunters Hill Art Exhibition. Children’s works were displayed in the nearby church hall from 1956 -1985. As the Exhibition grew over the years so did the popularity of the children’s section.Eventually the children’s section out-grew the church hall; in 1986 Hunters Hill High School Head Teacher,Ric Hedley worked with all local schools andHunters Hill Council to develop a separate exhibition which became known as ‘Young in Art’.

‘Young in Art’ is an inspirational exhibition of local school students’ artworks. Each school is responsible for selecting the works and hanging/displaying them in the Hunters Hill Town Hall. These art works are then judged and awarded prizes.

The importance of inspiring and encouraging creativity in young people is recognised; high calibre judges judge the children’s section. One of the judges of the first Children’s Exhibition in 1956 was Jeffrey Smart a highly distinguished painter. Jeffrey Smart, AO (26 July 1921 – 20 June 2013) was an expatriate Australian painter known for his precisionist depictions of urban landscapes.

The 2015 ‘Young in Art’ Exhibition showed a range of talents from four major high schools: St Josephs, Riverside Girls High, Marist Sisters College and Hunters Hill High as well as four Primary schools: Hunters Hill Public School, Villa Maria, Boronia Park Public School and Gladesville Public School.

The school was represented by our inspirational Visual Arts teachers Ms Dawes, Ms Robey and Ms Wong. Other supporting teachers included Ms. Thompson.

O-choy-o Vietnam! You’d think the third time travelling to Vietnam it would be a fairly predictable affair, but you quickly learn that nothing is predictable when it comes to 28 adolescent students! The teachers quickly realised the reasons teachers put so much effort into helping students be the best they can be as during our Vietnam excursion we could see learning happen with each new day we were in Vietnam.

Firstly, a big thanks to family and carers for their support throughout the process as well as a special mention and thanks to Mr Sharman and Ms Buchanan for their tireless support throughout this journey – giving up their personal time to be there for our students.

Both Mr Sharman and Ms Buchanan agree that these 28 students did their families, the school, the community, the country and themselves very proud. Their dignified behaviour, positive attitude and adventurous spirit shone through from the very beginning. For many of our first time travellers, their anxiety quickly turned into excitement; and for some of our more experienced travellers, Vietnam proved to be the perfect place to experience a new meaning of life.

Teaching is about many things, but giving these students the opportunity to experience life well beyond their comfort zone is a wonderful experience that both students and teachers embraced. How often in one’s life can you allow students to travel through the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels, experience one of the World Heritage Sites in Halong Bay, be embraced by young school children who idolised us just because we took the time to pay them a visit, endure the tears brought on by learning about atrocities of war time experiences at the War Remnants Museum and travel through a real underground city under the Reunification Palace? And I have listed only a few of our Vietnam experiences!

Beyond all the new experiences, the most rewarding part was seeing each individual student grow a little stronger, a little wiser and a little more appreciative and a lot more inquisitive about life and everything that surrounds it.

I’d like to apologise in advance if I have given your loved ones the travel bug… trust me, this will be the only bug worth having.

Thanks to all those who have made this trip possible including Deputy Principal Mr Murphy for his assistance and guidance during the crucial planning and preparation phase.

Mr Wong, HSIE Faculty

Remembrance Day“Lest We Forget”

“In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.”

Written by John McCrae on May 3, 1915

Hunters Hill High students volunteered to sell red remembrance poppies, pens and badges for Remembrance Day.

We met at the Anglican Church hall behind the Post Office where we were welcomed by Graeme Davis. Graeme ensured that each student knew that they were selling merchandise in memory of Remembrance Day. On this day, the First World War ended and we remember the armed forces who died "At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month".

The students enjoyed interacting with the Lane Cove Community, laughing and chatting away to shoppers, visitors and workers. It was a long day but the students enjoyed every minute and encouraged each other along the way. There was a competition to see who sold the most merchandise and especially to sell a $50 badge which one group of students did. The group that sold the most sold a total of $600 worth of merchandise.

Lane Cove RSL provided a beautiful spread of sandwiches, chocolate biscuits and bottles of water for lunch which the students enjoyed very much.

In total the students sold $2217.10 worth of merchandise. Every student did Hunters Hill High School proud.

Our thanks go out to Lane Cove shoppers, visitors, shopkeepers and workers who generously gave the students the time of day and to the Lane Cove RSL for organising the event.

Hunters Hill Council Volunteers Morning Tea

“Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.”

Hunters Hill High students were invited to a Volunteers Morning tea at Hunters Hill Council. They enjoyed the interaction with other Volunteers from the Hunters Hill Municiplaity. St Joseph’s boys played background music which everyone enjoyed.

Councillor, Richard Quinn, Mayor of Hunters Hill, thanked the Volunteers for their commitment and civic duty to the Hunters Hill Community.

We had the opportunity to speak to allumni of Hunters Hill High School. Dr Alistair Sharp’s two sons, Liam and Declan had completed their HSC at Hunters Hill High. Ex-Hunters Hill High teacher, Mr Ross McBride and his wife spoke of their son’s time at Hunters Hill High. Now a musician, their son had a high regard for our musicians.

All the Volunteers were thanked for their contribution to the Hunters Hill Community.

SCIENCE NEWSTOP OF THE HILL:

On Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th November, students from partner primary schools, attended the ‘Top of the Hill’ program at Hunters Hill High School, with activities running right across faculties. In Science, these students were introduced to a wide range of experiences, including making fog, singing coins and creating engines with dry ice!

Primary school students were placed in groups of 4-5 and were given a group leader from Hunters Hill High School’s Year 9 Science classes. For each session, allocated groups had a taste of working scientifically in a lab, involved in group collaboration and, more importantly, having FUN with basic scientific concepts.

At the end of the sessions, each group shared experiences with the community. We look forward to seeing these students in the future.

SCIENCE TEXTBOOK POLICY FOR SENIORS:In Science, we issue electronic versions of textbooks for Year 11 Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Senior Science. The hard copy versions of textbooks are used in the classroom. We issue a hard copy to every Year 12 student as well as use various textbooks in the classroom. Textbooks are issued through the school library.
