Dear friends in Christ! May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! I hope that you had a

good week. Here we are in the month of April, and this past week we had a few nice warm day. This means the winter weather is leaving the area. For the past two weekends, we have heard two great stories about God’s mercy and forgiveness. At the opening of the Second Vatican Council, Saint John Paul XXIII said “Now the Bride of Christ wishes to use the medicine of mercy rather than taking up the arms of securi-ty...The Catholic Church wants to show herself a loving mother to all: patient, kind, moved by compassion and goodness.” Through the words of the scripture we learn about God’s mercy through the words and ac-tions of Jesus. John’s gospel for this weekend shows us God’s love and mercy toward the woman who was accused of the sin of adultery and was about to be stoned to death. Looking at the crowd, who were eager-ly waiting to stone the woman, Jesus challenges each person in the crowd to look at or within themselves to see who they were before God. If they were standing in truth before God and seeing themselves as sin-ners, how could they condemn and execute others who are also sinners? We, too, are sinners before God, and we need God’s mercy and for-giveness. We make mistakes, and we have sinned against God and others. God, in his mercy, has forgiven us and wiped out our offenses. As the faithful followers of Jesus, we are called to do the same—to for-give those who have trespassed against us, to stop judging and con-demning others. Remember these words of Jesus “Forgive and you will be forgiven. Do not condemn and you will not be condemned. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Have a blessed week!

Peace & Blessings

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question: Lent always seems to help me renew my relationship with God and strengthen my religious practice. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to achieve that the rest of the year?

Answer: The obvious answer may seem to be to do whatever you do during Lent all year-round. But part of the power of Lent is that we focus as a community on renewing our faith and preparing for Easter. Our Len-ten practices have a purpose and a goal. Therein lies the secret. When we focus our efforts on one virtue, try to change one bad habit, or seek to deepen our understanding of one aspect of faith, we focus our efforts and give our full attention to what we are trying to accomplish. We tend to be more successful achieving our goals. More importantly, it has a ripple effect in our lives: one thing changes or is added to the spiritual mix of our lives and many aspects are changed. All too often, we leave our spir-itual growth to chance and the practice of faith to habit, and then wonder why we have no sense of growth or progress. Think of it in terms of exer-cise. We walk, lift weights, and bend and stretch to attain the maximum benefit from what we do. In addition, to keep those benefits, we eat healthful food and get enough vitamins and rest. Spirituality requires the same kind of attention: we pray, fast, read the Bible, receive sacraments, and do charitable work to maximize the benefits of practicing faith. Keep-ing Lent year-round keeps us in spiritual shape!

REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURE:

First Reading—During Israel's captivity in Babylon (circa 550 B.C.), the Lord revealed to Isaiah the future restoration of

Israel: "Remember not the things of the past...see, I am doing something new!" When have you experienced a new beginning in your own spiritual journey?

Second Reading—In speaking of his past experiences as a person who has come to faith in Jesus, Paul tells the Philippians that he has "been taken possession of by Christ Jesus." Who are some people in your faith community that exhibit a similar depth of faith?

Gospel Reading—The religious leaders of Jerusalem tried to trap Jesus with a specific teaching on condemning adultery under the Mosaic Law. But Jesus countered with a stunning example of God's mercy. When have you shown mercy toward another over judgment?

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Some celebrities do a lot to help out various causes that are meaningful to them. Sometimes they give of their time, talent, or treasure, while other times they create giving opportunities for the rest of us to be generous. The celebrity then does much to highlight the cause, and the hope is that enough people will give to make a difference. I never judge another's motive when they choose to give to or support a cause. Howev-er, I hear many times a criticism levied against seemingly rich people who start a fundraiser and ask the rest of us to give: "Since they have so much money, they could simply give all the money needed themselves!" This exclamation often comes with disdain and a tone of superiority. This sen-timent also comes frequently from those who have chosen to given little to nothing to the cause themselves. Stewardship begins with the person in the mirror. You and I are accountable to each other, but at the end of the day, the only one who knows the true level of our generosity is God. As this Lent draws to a close, it is time to take a good long look in the mirror. You probably aren't famous, so there probably won't be a crowd of people to question the level of your sacrifice, devotion, and generosity this Lent. Of course, God knows and so does that person looking back at you in the mirror. - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
