Civic Engagement Defined • Educational experiences that intentionally prepare students for informed, engaged participation in civic and democratic life by providing opportunities to develop civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions through learning and practice.

•  These include civics and government as subjects unto themselves but also service-learning and other approaches for integrating a civic and democratic dimension into other disciplines.

•  The mission of the John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress is to increase the understanding of Congress—“the People’s Branch” of government.

• As a part of the New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, the Center strives to help the next generation of public service leaders develop a deeper understanding of how and why Congress makes decisions.

John Brademas Center’s Work •  The humanities are confronted with a political and

social climate that increasingly view them as irrelevant, even unessential to America's economic and cultural vitality, which has prompted a reassessment of their value or worth in 21st Century Higher Education. The humanities promote civic engagement.

•  Reflections Project, asking departing and newly retired Members to look back on their careers, some spanning up to 30 years, and to explore what they have learned about the country and the institution.

A National Call to Action

In January 2012:

• The National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement published “A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future,” commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education

•  In response to this report, the U.S. Department of Education published “Advancing Civic Learning and Engagement in Democracy: A Road Map and Call to Action”

Five Priorities for Action Advancing civic learning and democratic engagement in both the U.S. and global contexts by:

1.  Encouraging efforts to make them core expectations for students

2.  Developing more robust evidence of civic and other student achievement outcomes of civic learning, and of the impact of school- and campus community partnerships;

3.  Strengthening school- and campus-community connections

4.  Expanding research and the range of public scholarship

• National Resource Centers and Language Resource Centers partner with local K-12 schools to train teachers, develop materials, and conduct outreach events related to a world area and language(s)

• Center for International Business Centers serve as regional resources to local businesses by offering programs and providing research designed to meet the international training needs of such businesses

Funding Priorities Between 2010 and 2012, several of ED’s international education grant programs have given priority points to applicants that:

•  Include research projects focusing on political science or public policy

• Collaborate with professional schools such as public policy schools

Plans for new 2013 grant competitions may include language on priorities for civic engagement activities
