THE FAST TRACK TO SAP HANA– DRIVEN BUSINESS ACCELERATION

Harried executives and managers in today’s business world may sometimes feel as if they’re actors in a video stuck on fast-forward. In this age of digital trans-formation, companies must transact and analyze ever-escalating amounts of data and, increasingly, must do so in real time. Everything from the proliferation of mobile devices to the globalization trend—and the resulting 24x7 business cycle—is forcing companies to accelerate their operations to speeds that would have been unthinkable even a decade ago.

To survive in this frenetic business environment, companies must undergo a digital transformation and become “high-velocity enterprises,” according to systems integrator and consultancy Accenture. High-velocity enterprises are agile, responsive and insight-driven. Becoming such an enterprise means rethinking business processes and problems and applying game-changing technologies to them. Among those technologies, which build on a solid ERP foundation, are in-memory and cloud computing. These technolo-gies, in turn, can be enhanced and extended by a variety of digital capabilities such as big data analytics, mobile computing and social networking.

One of the most powerful platforms for supporting high-velocity enterprises is SAP HANA, an in-memory relational database management system designed to handle transactional as well as analytical loads. SAP is now tuning all of its software applications to perform optimally when paired with SAP HANA, which will make it the preferred database platform—and, even-tually, the default platform—for SAP customers.

Solutions built on this in-memory database are helping organizations become insight-driven, high-velocity enterprises. That said, it can be difficult for companies to design and deploy SAP HANA–based solutions on their own.

Accenture and the HP Enterprise Group have pooled their expertise, services and products to offer a comprehensive solution as a service for SAP HANA. Crafted for each customer’s specific requirements, this kind of end-to-end solution can do everything from accelerating individual business processes or applica-tions to catalyzing full business transformations.

SOLUTION AS A SERVICE FOR SAP HANA

Although cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) offerings have become commonplace, full solutions as a service are a different, and rarer, breed. In the case of the Accenture/HP offering, the SAP HANA–based solution is typically deployed as a managed service, on-premises, with special attention to data security and governance, although hybrid cloud deployments including the public cloud are also possible. What this virtual private cloud offering does have in common with a public cloud solution is a monthly payment subscription model that eliminates high up-front capital costs. The solution as a service for SAP HANA monthly fee covers the key elements of the solution: design, deployment, software, hard-ware and ongoing support and managed services in a bring-your-own-license (BYOL) model.

Beyond shifting the cost structure away from a capital-intensive model, the solution as a service approach can produce a tailored and effective solution much more rapidly than an individual company—or a disjointed collection of vendors—can. Equally important, Accenture serves as a single point of contact for the customer for all elements of the solution, greatly simplifying the client/vendor relationship and accelerating the resolution of any potential issues.

i Beyond the core SAP HANA platform, the solutions Accenture and HP craft and deliver can incorporate other software and cloud-service elements. Among the solutions, Accenture and HP address specific business and industry use cases with SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA (SAP S/4HANA), SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) on HANA and HANA for analytic applications.

For their part, Accenture and HP bring unique strengths, as well as extensive SAP expertise, to these solutions. Accenture’s market-leading SAP practice has more than 42,000 trained SAP practi-tioners operating in 120 countries; the company has 17 Accenture Innovation Centers for SAP Solutions, including one dedicated to SAP HANA; and it operates a joint solution development organization with SAP, the Accenture and SAP Business Solutions Group. Reflecting these strengths, Accenture ranks at the top of Gartner, Inc.’s “Magic Quadrant for SAP Implemen-tation Services, Worldwide” report, published July 2015.HP, meanwhile, has had a close partnership with SAP for 25 years and has been involved in more than 77,000 joint HP and SAP installations.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO BECOMING A HIGH-VELOCITY ENTERPRISE

HP ConvergedSystems provides complete integrated systems and services that deliver the foundation for the SAP HANA solutions Accenture and HP offer. The HP ConvergedSystems portfolio includes workload-optimized appliances such as the HP Converged-System 500, for scale-up and scale-out of SAP HANA deployments, as well as the HP ConvergedSystem 900, for HANA solutions requiring greater scalability, flexibility and agility in mission-critical environments. The HP solutions support both hardware and soft-ware virtualization and provide mission-critical high availability and data protection.

These systems deliver superior performance, with one test workload runtime dropping from two hours to less than two minutes and with queries that used to take 90 minutes completed in one second. With the highest I/O bandwidth of any current x86 scale-up system, the HP platforms support real-time access to analytics and reporting, enabling organizations to greatly speed their operations and decision-making.

The highly flexible HP systems can scale up to 12 TB for Suite on HANA and S/4HANA requirements. The systems can also be deployed in massive scale-out configurations that reach 96 TB storage capacity for BW on HANA deployments.

HP also offers optimized platforms for SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI) deployments, and integrated systems, such as the HP Converged-System 700 for SAP business applications and ecosystem business logic, maximize breadth and choice, depending on individual business require-ments. As the infrastructure layer of the solution, HP Converged Systems provides systems config-ured and tuned to function as SAP HANA appliances delivering peak performance, resilience and scal-ability. Once the preconfigured and pretested HP ConvergedSystem platforms arrive at the customer’s site, HP provides a variety of technical services. These can include rapid configuration and deploy-ment services as well as follow-on ProActive Care support services, among others.

Accenture weighs in with a portfolio of services spanning the journey to becoming a high-velocity enterprise (including strategy, digital, technology and operations).

DELIVERING ON SAP HANA’S PROMISE

Many companies—SAP customers and others—hope to use SAP HANA, S/4HANA, SAP BW on HANA and other technologies as engines to enable new capabilities and, ultimately, drive digital business transformations. Determining how best to deploy the HANA platform in their operations can prove challenging, however.

By collaborating to deliver tailored and compre-hensive solutions as a service, Accenture and HP are helping companies reduce the capital costs, deployment times and ongoing overhead associated with managing and optimizing SAP HANA–based solutions. Thanks to this best-of-breed partnership, companies seeking to accelerate, and even trans-form, their businesses can now get on the fast track to achieving their goals.
