SAVE THE DATE the Fanwood Weekly SEPTEMBER 2013 Dear Staff, What a great first week of the school year! Thank you for all of your work in getting the school student-ready. Today, I will attend ASD’s grand opening celebration for their new Gallaudet-Clerc Education Building. On Wednesday I will be in Albany for a 4201 Association Meeting. In the evening, the Town of Greenburgh’s Planning Board will review our site request of modulars. Several of their Board members toured our campus today. Fingers crossed it is smooth! As you know, this year we are hosting a Back to School Night on October 3 rd from 5:00pm-8:00pm. This is a great day for parents to be on campus as we have both soccer and volleyball games… and it is Spirit Week, as well! Since this is the first Back To School Night at Fanwood, we would like to take the opportunity to make it special. We know that many of you have attended Back to School Nights at other schools and we would love the opportunity to include your ideas in our planning. If you have ideas to share, please join us in the board room this Thursday at 2:45pm. Dear Staff,

What a great first week of the school year! Thank you for all of your work in getting the school student-ready.

Today, I will attend ASD’s grand opening celebration for their new Gallaudet-Clerc Education Building. On Wednesday I will be in Albany for a 4201 Association Meeting. Don't forget! Fanwood Picnic is this Saturday, September 21st from 11-2pm. Staff members and students are invited to bring their families to Fanwood. Bring enough food for your group and a blanket/chairs to sit on. We can't wait to meet your families!

Join us in celebrating 75 years in White Plains! Date: Saturday, September 28th, 2013 at 10:00am Questions: [email protected]

Food Friday in Amy Kushner's Class By Amy Kushner Last Friday, Cori Wagner's class joined my class for our first "Food Friday". Each Friday we'll make a special snack related to our read aloud book. This week we read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Bill Martin, Jr. For our special snack, we made a coconut tree out of graham crackers, alphabet cereal, apples, and grapes.

Please share your news with us! One of the newsletter items that staff members told us they appreciate the most is pictures and blurbs about other classroom activities. In the body of today’s email, we shared a link with you with directions on how to access a folder on Google Drive called “News to Share”. Please feel welcome to use this folder to share your fun classroom/Fanwood activities and pictures. We greatly appreciate any news & pictures you share!

CPR & FIRST AID CLASS Last Thursday and Friday, Fanwood held a CPR/First Aid course for all interested staff members. Mike Kennedy led the course and from the pictures below...it looks like they managed to have some fun as they learned!

Safety The NYSD Safety Team is back in action and continues to meet weekly on Fridays at 12:30pm. Although we recognized great improvement last year, there is always more work to do.

We would really like to gain the perspective of teachers and TAs. These particular staff members are in classrooms with students all day long, it would be helpful to learn about any particular concerns you may have.

If you are a teacher or teacher assistant who is interested in sharing your thoughts at one of our safety meetings, please email [email protected]. Thank you so much and we look forward to a safe year at Fanwood.

Fanwood's Nightmare Manor The Haunted House is around the corner! While we need many random items donated, one of the most pressing donation needs is Corn Stalks and Pumpkins (big and small). Please consider purchasing an extra

pumpkin or corn stalk as you are prepping for the fall and Halloween season. Or, if you know anyone who has a personal contact at a pumpkin patch or farm, please let us know. Your help is really appreciated! With questions or for more information, contact Allison Brooks, Laura Mrugalski and Frank Ribaudo.

Students Need Your Styrofoam! Thanks to Mary Jones, Emmy Azodeh and Frank Ribaudo, our students are getting involved with the Haunted House preparations! Last year, the students expressed interest in being involved in the Haunted House. Since a lot of the preparation involves building and work outside of their school hours, we struggled to find a meaningful way in which they could help and feel involved.

This year, our art class students and teachers are helping out by creating a few different props that will be used in the haunted house. These students have one request: Please save any styrofoam packing and any packaging materials for the group to use for these props. Please contact Mary Jones and/or Emmy Azodeh with any packaging you can donate.

Thank you!

Fanwood’s Nightmare Manor is right around the corner and several of you have already asked about how you can help. We have several committees and now we need chair people for the following committees:

• Admissions • Parking • Actors • Make Up /Costumes • Decorating • Haunted House Guides • Games for Children's Spooktacular • Gym Decorations • Food • Security

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Haunted House committee: Frank Ribaudo, Allison Brooks Laura Mrugalski

Sign Up Meeting: Monday, September 23rd 3:00-3:15 and 3:30-3:45 in the Board Room. If you are interested in

volunteering, please attend this SHORT meeting!
