2 nd of the 3 NEW satellites is live 1 The NEW Astra 28E satellites THE FACTS February 2014 Until recently the UK TV content carried by satellite has been spread over 5 satellites with 7 different footprints; this will be significantly simplified this year as the 3 newly deployed satellites will have 2 similar footprints (plus additional African focused Kuband & Kaband data transponders). The indications are that the majority of unencrypted “terrestrial channels” content will be broadcast on the UK beam and the majority of subscription content will be carried on the Europe beam. The winners: UK users will have increased resilience against weather events causing signal quality degradation. Subscription customers in Southern Europe are likely to receive more of the subscription channels. The losers: Customers in midsouthern Europe (Bordeaux – Valencia) who have been able to receive terrestrial channels in the past that will no longer be able to. People further south will already be used to the limited availability of freetoair UK content. The latest generation satellites from Astra, designated 2E, 2F, & 2G each have Kuband UK beam & Europe beam for transmissions of UK TV content as well as data services The UK gets stronger satellite TV signals The broadcasts are designed to cater for the 60+ Million UK residents, unfortunately a few thousand mobile & expats are not the focus of this service. Content rights are also a major factor. Why are they moving it away from me? BBC moves to Astra 2E: www.bbc.co.uk/reception/news/news_ item25.html www.caclase.co.uk Latest News 7 th Feb pg.

The NEW Astra 28E satellites

THE FACTS February 2014

Until  recently  the  UK  TV  content  carried  by  satellite  has  been  spread  over  5  satellites  with  7  different  footprints;  this  will  be  significantly  simplified  this  year  as  the  3  newly  deployed  satellites  will  have  2  similar  footprints  (plus  additional  African  focused  Ku-‐band  &  Ka-‐band  data  transponders).  The  indications  are  that  the  majority  of  un-‐encrypted  “terrestrial  channels”  content  will  be  broadcast  on  the  UK  beam  and  the  majority  of  subscription  content  will  be  carried  on  the  Europe  beam.

The  winners:  UK  users  will  have  increased  resilience  against  weather  events  causing  signal  quality  degradation.    Subscription  customers  in  Southern  Europe  are  likely  to  receive  more  of  the  subscription  channels.

The  losers:  Customers  in  mid-‐southern  Europe  (Bordeaux  –  Valencia)  who  have  been  able  to  receive  terrestrial  channels  in  the  past  that  will  no  longer  be  able  to.    People  further  south  will  already  be  used  to  the  limited  availability  of  free-‐to-‐air  UK  content.

The  latest  generation  satellites  from  Astra,  designated  2E,  2F,  &  2G  each  have  Ku-‐band  UK  beam  &  Europe  beam  for  transmissions  of  UK  TV  content  as  well  as  data  services

The UK gets stronger satellite TV signals

The  broadcasts  are  designed  to  cater  for  the  60+  Million  UK  residents,  unfortunately  a  few

thousand  mobile  &  ex-‐pats  are  not  the  focus  of  this  service.  Content  rights  are  also  a  major

factor.
