The EY Darden Executive Programme

Celebrating 25 years 4 — 16 March 2018

The Darden School of Business is committed to developing and inspiring responsible leaders to positively impact their teams, organisations and society. Twenty five years ago The EY Darden Programme was developed to nurture the managerial talent of Australasian organisations. We would be delighted to have your participation at the 2018 EY Darden Executive Programme where you will join a dynamic group of executives from a broad cross section of business and government organisations.

Darden Executive EducationDarden is one of the world’s leading professional development institutions for executive management education.

• Ranked by the Financial Times in 2017 as the #1 Faculty for the fourth year in a row, and #1 in course design (Open Enrolment Executive programmes) in the world.

• Darden Executive Education’s open enrolment programme is #5 in the world overall, according to the Financial Times (FT, 2017).

The Darden differenceBecause of Darden’s commitment to experiential learning — interactions with no lectures and no limits — each session is shaped by the expertise and perspectives of every person in the room. And the learning does not stop in the classroom. The Darden faculty live alongside participants throughout the two weeks at Taupo, allowing you to discuss and explore new possibilities with faculty and your fellow participants.

The depth of learning is intensive, inspiring and life changing. Participants learn new techniques, concepts and theories that will help them manage their current role more effectively, while the total experience prepares the executive for broader responsibilities in the future. This networking and learning alongside some of Australasian’s emerging and current leaders is then sustained by joining an active lifelong alumni group of top executives.

The EY Darden Executive Programme

What’s new for 2018?The 25th Anniversary programme has been redesigned, taking into account the unprecedented rate of change that companies face today. Their senior leaders must be agile decision-makers and global strategists who can steer their organisations through volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity to attain new levels of performance.

Led by four internationally recognised faculty from the Darden School of Business, the programme connects cutting edge research based insights with what works well for participants’ specific situations, for New Zealand and Australian organisations and the region overall. The programme retains the most successful transformative elements from past years while incorporating two new internationally recognised faculty, and the latest business and management thought leadership.

The programme focuses on 4 key themes:1. Strategy

2. Leadership

3. Global Acumen — economics and finance

4. Entrepreneurship and innovation

These themes are interweaved together in an integrated, reinforcing learning experience that builds knowledge, insight, and capabilities. Participants will leave the programme with new perspectives, sense of purpose and ideas that they can immediately put to work.

The themes in more detailStrategy:

The programme invites participants to ‘think, lead and influence strategically’. We can help you develop your Strategic Acumen ‘muscles’ by focusing on:

• Understanding strategy, purpose and execution

• Enhancing strategic capabilities to create and deliver superior value

• Aligning strategy and operational effectiveness

• Creating corporate coherence and advantage

• Managing the tension between short and long-term results

• Positioning and branding for competitive advantage — self, organisational, country

• Making good strategic choices in an uncertain global economy

Leadership:

Throughout the programme participants will be invited to reflect, practice and develop their leadership skills:

• Leading, learning and change

• Leading through engagement and choices

• Leading transformational change

• Managing personal and team energy

• Influencing and persuading

• Conducting conversations that inspire diversity of thought and inclusive dialogue

• Integrate the perspectives of manager and leader and turn vision into reality

• Asking powerful and sometimes difficult questions

• Owning your future

The EY Darden Executive Programme

“ It was an excellent two weeks, with high quality and thoughtful presentations. It certainly provides plenty to think about for the future and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet a range of new, high performing people who I would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.” Geoff Plunket, Chief Executive, Port Otago Limited

Global Acumen:

New Zealand and Australia’s fortunes are closely linked to international markets. The programme will explore:

• National and industry competitive advantage

• International competitiveness

• Using fiscal and monetary policy tools

• Developing strategies for economic sustainability

• New approaches to financing social issues such as housing affordability and community development

Entrepreneurship:

An entrepreneurial mindset is a vital ingredient for “creating, leading and transforming businesses”. It is not just about “small business” or even about starting a new business. Rather, it addresses the process of new wealth creation through the creation of high-growth potential ventures or new venture units in evolving or renewing industries.

• Develop an attitude, mindset, and skills that are crucial for becoming a creative leader

• Be ready to apply these skills and mind-set in the context of starting a new unit in an established organisation or starting a stand-alone new organisation

• Learn to leverage the commonly available resources we all possess to create something new

• Explore the attributes of an entrepreneurial firm

• Understand the attributes of a supportive eco-system for entrepreneurship

ObjectivesSpecific objectives which should be achieved by participants include:

• Improving understanding of the global and Australasian environment and the commercial impact.

• Improving understanding of the way in which leaders of private and public organisations manage their businesses.

• Gaining new concepts, techniques and knowledge to enhance performance.

• Sharpening analytical and decision-making skills; improving communication skills at board and executive management level.

• Building capabilities and confidence for the customer servicing and leadership opportunities during the next decade.

• Sharing the ideas and experiences of a diverse group of executives.

Who should attend? This programme is designed for Australasian executives, managers, directors, family, social and entrepreneurial business owners from all industries and organisations who want to attain new levels of personal and organisation performance through increasing their leadership effectiveness, discovering and driving new growth opportunities for their organisations and the region.

Participants should have:• Attained, or be about to attain, a position as general manager or

functional division head, involved with general management issues.

• Demonstrated significant managerial achievement and potential for further development.

• Endorsement from senior management within their organisation to attend the Programme.

• EY reserves the right to approve applications after taking into consideration the criteria above and the need to balance participation from all sectors of the economy.
