Academic Procession and Regalia

The colorful Academic Procession at Evergreen features a faculty column through whichcandidates pass in symbolic review.

The history of academic dress dates far back into the early days of the oldest univer-sities. A statute of 1321 required that all Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors of theUniversity of Coimbra (Portugal) wear gowns.

Although the origin of academic dress is still uncertain, most authorities believe itssources are found chiefly in ecclesiastical rather than in civilian dress.

Originally the hood was a Tippet, or shoulder covering, worn by begging Friars in theMiddle Ages. It also served as a head covering. When caps came into fashion in the fif-teenth century, hoods became ornamental and were draped over the shoulder and downthe back. The cap was conferred as a symbol of the Master's Degree and varied greatly. Some were stiff, some soft, some square or round with a tuft in the center. The tassel to-day is an elaboration of the tuft. The "mortar boad" style is from Oxford, but roundand soft caps are also worn today at some universities.

The practice of wearing academic dress in this country dates from 1754 when KingGeorge II chartered King's College (now Columbia College) and transplanted to the Col-onies many of the regulations of Oxford and Cambridge. In time, more sombre colorsreplaced the scarlet of the English universities. During most of the nineteenth century,American colleges and universities had no standard style of academic dress. Many facultywore gowns from European universities where they received their degrees or gowns oflocal origin. Only a few wore hoods, which often were assumed to be articles of ec-clesiastical rather than academic dress.

It wasn't until 1895 that a commission of leading American educators adopted a codestandardizing academic dress. That code is still in effect today although it was modifiedslightly in 1935 and again in 1960. The shape and size of the American hood marks thecollege degree of the wearer, and under the system established by the code, it is possibleat an academic convocation to distinguish at a glance the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doc-tor's, and at the same time recognize the university or college from which the degree wasobtained. Evergreen's colors are forest green and white.

The code provides for three types of gowns. Those worn by the Bachelors are made ofblack worsted material and have long pointed sleeves with two pleats on either side.Masters may wear either black silk or woolen gowns made with long crescent-shaped,

full-length sleeves. The gown has a closed front with fluted shoulders. The Doctors'gowns are black silk and they have full flowing sleeves barred with black or blue velvetand faced with velvet over their entire length. The Board of Trustees wear speciallydesigned attire.

It is the hood which is the most important and distinctive feature of the Americancode. The Master's hood is three and one-half feet long with a three-inch wide velvetband. The Doctor's hood is four feet long with a five-inch velvet band. The velvet bandof the hood symbolizes the wearer's field of study while the lining of the hood recognizesthe official colors of the institution from which the degree was granted.

Ceremonial Mace

Originally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare by a king or a great noble, themace has been refined into a symbolic device used on ceremonial occasions. As anacademic device, the mace goes back to 16th century England when Queen Elizabeth Ipresented a replica of her own royal mace to the corporation of the University of Oxfordin 1589. She ordered that it be used in all ceremonies to represent the royal presence andthe authority granted to the university to issue degrees under the royal insignia. KingCharles I made a similar gift to Cambridge University in 1625. Since that time, it hasbecome increasingly the custom for European, and now American, colleges and univer-sities to use ceremonial maces during graduation exercises.

The Evergreen State College ceremonial mace was carried at the head of the com-mencement procession for the first time during the 1982 graduation. The mace is rich insymbolism. Beginning with a square core of Eastern Maple, narrow strips of laminatedmaple and walnut are attached to the core in a cross design. At the open corners, bub-inga, a wood red in color and rich in grain, is inserted. The resulting three-foot columnwas lathed round and represents the tree of life. Nine grooves inlaid with copper denotethe nine levels of life from animal spirit to enlightenment. The copper bands suggest thebonding forces of life.

The cap of the Mace was turned from a single block of locally grown black walnut. The shape is suggestive of a crown and represents the principal integration of knowledgeand experience. To remind us that such an integration is a carefully balanced blend ofdiverse aspects of human nature, there are inlaid four circles symbolizing the four majorways of experiencing the world: thinking, feeling, intuiting and sensing, and the fourmain characteristics of the human mind: wisdom, innocence, introspection, andillumination.

Incorporated into this crown is a unique feature: the center is hollow and has in it asealed vial. It is intended that each year the graduation planning committee will havewritten one page, to be microfilmed and placed in the vial. Each year the committee willexamine the document placed in the mace for the class ten years before and include inthe ceremony some short reflection on that piece. The intention is that the mace is part

of a living event that connects us to our past, demonstrates our belief and faith in ourfuture and maintains a connection between the two.

The Evergreen State College Mace is the gift of former Academic Vice President andProvost, Byron Youtz, who donated the materials and faculty member, Earle McNeil, who gave his time and talent to its creation.

The Evergreen State College

The Evergreen State College is Washington's newest four-year public institution. In 1967,when the Washington State Legislature founded Evergreen, three important charges weregiven: to provide an educational alternative to the existing forms of higher education inthe state, to serve the educational needs of the citizens of Southwest Washington, and tomeet the needs of state and local government.

Since it opened its doors in 1971, Evergreen has established a national reputation forleadership in innovative education. At the core of the Evergreen experience is a commit-ment to interdisciplinary education, small group seminars, narrative evaluations, col-laborative teaching and learning and cooperative education. The college's graduate-levelprograms in public administration and in energy and environmental studies are stronglypublic policy-centered. In addition, Evergreen offers many part-time, evening andweekend programs and courses, as well as recreational/leisure education classes for com-munity members. The three founding charges have been met and they continue to pro-vide special thrusts for the institution.

In recent years, Evergreen has received many honors and accolades. In 1979,Evergreen was awarded a full 10-year accreditation, the highest possible. The visiting ac-creditation team praised Evergreen for a "dedication to a liberal arts education whichpervades the life of the college to an extent virtually unknown in the entire UnitedStates." The Council on Post Secondary Education (CPE) has expanded Evergreen's ser-vice area and has recognized Evergreen as the state's premier public college of arts andsciences.

Other recognition includes:'Ranking in U.S. News and World Report as the top regional liberal arts college in theWest and Midwest.'Selection of Evergreen by New York Times Education Editor Edward Fiske as a "hid-den gem" in higher education, the only public college on his list of 16 lesser-known, bestsmall colleges in the U.S.'Rating by the National Science Foundation of Evergreen as an "exemplary" institutionin the use of computers in undergraduate education.'Awarding of more student-originated-studies undergraduate research grants by the Na-tional Science Foundation than any other college or university in the country.*Praise for Evergreen's focus on the liberal arts and the future from the ChristianScience Monitor to Time magazine to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer to the Olympian.

Evergreen's more-than-6,000 graduates have been part of designing, testing and refin-ing a format for higher education that is considered widely as remarkable, effective, andexciting. In a recent survey, 94% of the college's graduates reported successful placementin jobs, schools or other activities of their choice. Of Evergreen's graduates who have ap-plied to medical or law school, 84% have been accepted—an extraordinary successrecord. Fully 50% of Evergreen's graduates have completed or are currently pursuinggraduate or professional degrees.

Evergreen is a very special community—an extended family. The members of the Classof 1984 can take pride in their academic community, their alma mater. The faculty andstaff are proud of its graduates and extend heartfelt congratulations to its newest alumni.
