  • Once upon a time between the Vistula and Oder rivers there lived several tribes of Slavs. The head of the tribes were three brothers: Lech, Czech and Rus.

  • One day the brothers Lech, Czech and Rus were wandering about an ancient forest. They were looking for a place to settle down.

  • Suddenly they saw a herd of deer in a clearing in the forest. They strung their bows. The arrows whistled. The animals ran in all directions. The brothers set off in pursuit of them. Lech to the North, Czech to the South and Rus to the East. Czech founded the Czech Republic and Rus, Russian state.

  • Lech hunted for a long time with his body-guard for the beautiful deer. The stars lightened in the sky. After nightfall the wanderers went to bed under an oak tree on a hill.

  • In the morning they were woken by the fluttering of wings. They saw a huge eagle over them. The bird was sitting in a nest. The eagles feathers shone in the sunshine.

  • Everybody was charmed by the beautiful sight. We will stay here, said Lech to his friends. This is the most beautiful place in the world. We will build a settlement here and a white eagle will be our sign.

  • And so in the middle of the forest Lech built a castle. It was called Gniezno, which became the first historical capital of Poland, to remind them of the eagles nest.

  • The sign of White Eagle is held dear by every Pole. For over one thousand years it has been cherished by children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

  • This sign is known by every child. The white eagle is the emblem of our homeland to the present day.
