A Rotherham High School has given its backing to Martek Medical, which is calling for all schools to fit an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), in order to save more young people’s lives who may suffer a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Oakwood High School had a Lifeline AED from Martek Medical presented to them by World Cup referee Howard Webb last year. The AED is located in the school’s reception, so it is easily visible and can be accessed quickly not only by the school but also members of the public requiring its use in the community. The Lifeline AED is ideal for school environments as it is safe to use on young people. It’s been designed to be extremely straightforward to use and the talk-through guide helps people to relax when using it. AEDs are the only proven treatment to restore a normal heart rhythm and the speed of delivery is vital as the chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of around 10% with each minute that passes. www.martek-medical.com

When we think about building materials – flooring in particular - bamboo probably isn’t the first option that comes to mind. Bamboo from Moso however, outperforms many conventional finishes in a number of areas. Firstly, bamboo is one of the most sustainable alternatives to traditional timbers. From a design perspective, bamboo is a highly attractive natural material and can greatly enhance a contemporary interior. Bamboo also helps to facilitate a healthy indoor environment – it is an anti-static and anti-allergenic product. Bamboo is also one of the most versatile of building materials. It’s most popular and wide use is for flooring or walling where a highly contemporary, durable and natural feel is desired, and it is also an extremely tactile finish which makes it an interesting choice for a number of other design projects

and items. Bamboo from Moso is the only bamboo company which has full carbon footprint and LCA certification which guarantees that all its products are carbon neutral (or better) over their full life cycle. www.mosobamboosurfaces.co.uk

Trend Group, a leading international manufacturer and distributor of glass mosaic tiles and agglomerates headquartered in Vicenza, Italy, has partnered with Wisconsin-based Kohler Co to further each company’s eco-friendly mission of keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill. With this collaboration, Kohler, a forward-thinking leader in plumbing products, will provide pre-consumer porcelain from its bath and sink manufacturing to be re-purposed for the production of Trend’s newest line of exclusive agglomerate surfaces, at its Sebring, Florida plant.

This two-year partnership has resulted in the creation of Trend agglomerate products that are made with up to 51% of recovered Kohler porcelain, along with recycled glass and granite, a cooperative effort that has already kept nearly one million pounds of waste porcelain out of landfill.

The finished product is an incredibly unique and durable surface that is universally appealing and earth-friendly, as a versatile option for home and commercial improvement projects. The new porcelain surfaces are nonporous and incredibly resistant

to stains, scratches and heat, helping to ensure lifetime usage of these products. These materials will also be marketed and installed through Trend’s global home improvements franchise, Granite Transformations, which will back them with a lifetime warranty.

“Trend Group is proud to partner with Kohler, incorporating its unused materials into our exclusive products to create stylish and dependable surfaces for building and remodelling projects,” says Danny Hanlon, COO of Trend GB and Granite Transformations. “This collaboration mirrors our mission to be one of the world’s largest producers of decorative glass and agglomerate surfaces, using advanced technology to create inspiring materials that make for for beautiful and sustainable environments.”

Long before it became fashionable, Trend Group, which has its UK headquarters in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, declared a commitment to implementing real-world processes that protect and preserve the planet’s resources. Trend products are thus designed specifically to consume fewer raw materials and to have extended durability. Its innovative agglomerate surfaces require 60% less raw material and incorporate both geologic waste and recycled glass that would otherwise be destined for landfill, with more than three million pounds of recycled glass already repurposed into decorative products.

Trend’s development of new product lines sets industry benchmarks for the use of post-consumer recycled content in agglomerate and glass tile products, reaching levels as high as 78%. The Group’s manufacturing facilities were designed with sophisticated recycling systems that significantly reduce water consumption and the proliferation of pollutants, while the consumption and cost of packaging materials has been reduced through the use of recycled or reusable packaging. Most of the product lines are created with a low carbon emission manufacturing process using recycled materials whenever possible.

Trend collaborates with the world’s leading environmental organizations, architects and designers to promote sustainable building practices and its product lines contribute measurably to LEED Green Building Council ratings, based on credits for Material and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design.

This outlook is also evident in Trend’s global franchise network, Granite Transformations, which is known for its ability to install products over existing kitchen and bathroom surfaces in as little as a day. The unique installation process eliminates the need for demolition during the remodelling process, keeping unnecessary waste out of landfill.

Granite Transformations is recognized for its exclusive line of granite-based surfaces, crafted to be stronger and more durable than traditional granite slab, and for its recycled glass product line, made with up to 72% post-consumer tempered glass. All Granite Transformations work surface and mosaic makeover products are manufactured by the Trend Group.

“We applaud Trend and Granite Transformations for seeking ways to create materials that can sustain the test of time,” says Rob Zimmerman, Kohler’s Senior Channel Manager of Sustainability. “Kohler’s alliance with these companies is consistent with our business model to maintain the highest standards of manufacturing products, while being environmentally conscious.”

Research carried out by Yorkon, a member of the Portakabin Group, shows that it is performing well ahead of the construction industry, having consistently delivered 99.7 per cent of building projects on time and on budget over the last decade. This performance is in stark contrast to the 2012 industry figures released by Constructing Excellence, which revealed the industry’s worst performance for 12 years. Just 34 per cent of projects were delivered on time and 61 per cent on cost, which is actually a decline since 2011 (source: UK Industry Performance Report 2012, Constructing Excellence/Glenigan).As part of its commitment to delivery on time and on budget, Yorkon has launched a ground-breaking Customer Charter, reaffirming its long-term pledge to providing the highest possible service standards. The new Charter states that if Yorkon fails to meet the agreed deadline, one per cent of the contract value will be refunded for every week a project is delayed*.Commenting on the launch of the new charter, Simon Ambler, Director at Yorkon, said, “We are passionate about ensuring every project is delivered on time and on budget, which is why we are going a step further to provide our customers with even greater peace of mind. We believe the new charter sets a clear benchmark for the industry, as well as demonstrating our commitment to customer service excellence.”The new charter follows the recent extension of the structural warranty protection for Yorkon buildings to 30 years, which is unmatched by site-based construction. This gives customers additional assurance of the quality, strength and long-term performance of this advanced off-site system and ensures that in the unlikely event of a structural failure during that time, Yorkon will rectify it.Yorkon now offers the widest range of building modules currently available from any off-site manufacturer in the UK. This provides architects, contractors and construction clients with the unprecedented flexibility to meet almost any building footprint or design.Yorkon is a market-leading supplier of off-site building solutions across a diverse range of sectors, including transport, retail, industry, health and education. It provides bespoke steel-framed buildings, which are manufactured and fitted out off site in significantly less time, with less disruption and less impact on the environment. Its projects have been recognised by numerous awards and accolades for design, build quality, project performance and health and safety. www.yorkon.info

The first category is to ensure that the structural elements of a building designed to support a load (i.e. floor joists that bear the overall floor structure), maintain their load-bearing capacity. The fire ratings required for load-bearing elements is generally measured in an amount of time that that building element is required to maintain its structural strength; commonly a 30 minute or 60 minute fire rating.

The Envirograf® product that satisfies these requirements is Product 42 - The HW Coating Range.

The second category is commonly known as ‘Spread of Flame’ protection. This is a fire-rating that is specific to how a particular substrate can prevent a fire from spreading across its surface. An untreated wooden panelled wall would have no resistance to the spread of flame across it’s surface and cause the fire to spread into the rest of the building. This rating is measured in two classifications: Class 1 or Class 0 Spread of Flame. These two categories are now being replaced with a new internationaly recognised test, now known as an SBI Rating.

The Envirograf® product that satisfies these requirements is Product 92 - The ES/VFR Coating Range and the Q/VFR Coating Range

HW Intumescent Paint achieves Scandinavian test requirements

The Envirograf® HW02E intumescent paint system was recently used in one of the most rigorous fire tests designed for testing coating systems, known as the K210 test. The HW system was applied at 2 coats 8m² per litre per coat onto 15mm tongue and grooved pine-wood profiles, a typical surface cladding (or wooden lining) used in the Scandinavian house sector. The test is designed to evaluate the coverings ability to protect the construction behind the covering. According to regulations a K210 rating is required, ensuring that wooden linings of this type resist the fire for a full 10 minutes ensuring that more flammable material behind the covering does not ignite for that set time, in this way reducing the intensity of the fire for the first critical 10 minutes, allowing the occupants effective escape to safety. The HW system successfully passed the EN 14135 test at the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI) in Copenhagen, and is now being specified throughout the Scandinavian housing sector market.

Two of the four prize-winners recently announced at a major international design competition in Paris - the European Copper in Architecture Awards - feature Nordic Copper products from Aurubis Architectural.

JKMM Architects’ Seinäjoki City Library in Finland, a thoroughly contemporary addition to the most extensive cluster of Alvar Aalto buildings in the world, received a Commendation at the Awards. The external skin of the new library is dominated by Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper, contrasting with the whiteness of the surrounding buildings.

Copper has been used comprehensively across facades, plinth and roofs – creating a single-material skin. A special shape of copper shingle was designed for the facades to give the building a unique and lively surface. In some situations, the shingle surface is formed into ventilation slots. Nordic Brown Light copper is also used to form vertical grilles and as a door facing to maintain material continuity.

Also Commended was the Dolomitenblick project in Sexten, Italy designed by Plasma Studio. Here, Nordic Brown copper and larch timber provide a restrained, local material palette that defines the sculpted mass of this apartment building in the Dolomites, growing out of the natural topography and reflecting traditional roof forms. Copper balcony balustrades wrap around the building, meeting at a central incision that announces the entrance. The Nordic Brown copper surrounds the mass on all sides, defining the roof as a continuation of the overall façade and building volume.

Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper gives either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ as well as Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas - developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Copper alloys include the new Nordic Bronze, Nordic Brass and the innovative Nordic Royal - an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. Aurubis Architectural is part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. www.aurubis.com/finland/architectural

Black Mountain Insulation, the UK’s only dedicated manufacturer of premium natural sheep’s wool and hemp insulation materials has been acquired by Essex based IPP Ltd. IPP’s strategy of developing a range of sustainable building products fits perfectly with the Black Mountain range. BMI sheep’s wool and hemp materials are recognised for quality in the natural insulation market. They attract the VOCs which contribute to sick building syndrome and, unlike man-made materials, sheep’s wool insulation can absorb 30% of its own mass without adversely affecting

thermal performance. Moisture is released naturally as the building warms thereby minimising risk of condensation forming in the roofspace. Materials have a high natural fibre content, use up to 90% less embodied energy and are ‘carbon negative’. www.blackmountaininsulation.com

What is biomimicry? Derived from the Greek word bios meaning ‘life’ and mimisis, meaning ‘imitate’, biomimicry refers to the copying, emulating and imitating of nature in all its forms and functions. Dedicating an exhibition to highlight the many everyday products, objects and buildings that have used nature as a source of inspiration, Designs by Mother Nature presents an intelligent, interactive and thought-provoking display of objects, videos and photographs that demonstrates the power of biomimicry. Divided into three categories; Form, Function and Future, the exhibition considers the varying ways that nature influences design. From imitating the shape of a Mallard’s beak to develop an aerodynamic high-speed train, to copying the natural echolocation ability of a bat to create a radar, the exhibition also considers what the future will bring with a selection of potential design ideas. Curated by Barcelona-based design and architecture studio, Estudi Ramon Folch (ERF) experts in sustainability, together with ‘Materials Man’ Chris Lefteri, as a curatorial consultant, the exhibition highlights the many ways nature has facilitated effective, attractive, value-added product designs, such as the LG GG-Flex mobile phone concept, which was inspired by human skin. Designed by the world-renowned FAT Architecture, the exhibition layout responds to the unique interior of the Roca London Gallery and also explores the concept of biomimicry. Using the mathematical Fibonnaci sequence as a basis for the framework, the formation unifies the exhibition categories with a dynamic and striking spatial experience through which visitors move. Highlighting the wealth of solutions that nature offers designers, architects and engineers; the exhibition displays examples that demonstrate the plethora of designs that have been inspired by nature, including:

Velcro: When the burdock thistle clung to the George de Mestral’s dog’s hair, he discovered a natural hook system that he later developed into Velcro.

Norman Foster’s Gherkin: Inspired by the Venus Flower Basket Sponge, a fibrous latticework that helps to disperse stresses on the organism in various directions.

Glowing Plant: Contemplate ideas for the future including the concept of light-producing plants grown from seed that would eliminate the need for electric lighting. The Brick Development Association (BDA), the body that represents the clay brick and paver industries in the UK and Ireland, has strongly rejected claims by the Royal Institute of Surveyors (RICS) that a fall in UK Construction Output is due to shortage of bricks.Simon Hay, Chief Executive Officer for the BDA, commented: “You only have to look at the statistics and forecasts from the Construction Products Association (CPA) to prove that these claims from the RICS are completely unfounded. Housing starts in Great Britain during 2013 are estimated to have increased by 24% and forecast to increase further in 2014 by 16% and 10% in 2015. Clearly house builders have been able to acquire sufficient brick supplies to significantly increase house building. Construction output is expected to rise by 3.4% in 2014 and by a further 5.2% in 2015, so there is no anticipation of supply problems causing problems in growth. If the brick industry was in ‘crisis’ as suggested by some areas of the media last year, this recovery would simply not have been possible.”The CPA has also reported that the largest constraint to industry recovery continues to be public sector construction. Public non – housing output fell 27.2% between 2010 and 2012 with recovery not anticipated until 2015 when the impacts of capital investment growth begin to feed through.“The lack of investment in public sector projects is what is really affecting the industry, not a shortage of bricks,” continues Simon. “The initial success of the government’s Help To Buy scheme and the growing pace of the economic recovery has meant that the construction industry has faced an upswing in demand. However, there is absolutely no suggestion that brick manufacturers will be unable to cope with the increased demand.”The BDA reports that many manufacturers as well as stepping up production have continued production right through the winter to meet demand, but demand is being met. It urges builders to work closely with manufacturers and merchants to plan their deliveries and place orders in advance as was standard practise prior to 2008 and the credit crisis.“The construction industry is in a phase of growth and optimism,” concludes Simon. “We are seeing a much needed lift in activity which is a really positive development and something our members are well placed to manage.” www.brick.org.uk

Portakabin Achieves Another Sustainability Award Success

The Portakabin Group has been awarded its third accolade this year in recognition of its commitment to sustainability. It has succeeded in achieving a Gold Award in the Business in the Community Environment Index 2013. This puts the Group among the UK’s highest performing businesses for environmental management.

The Index assesses participants’ integration of an environmental strategy into their operations and their performance in reducing impact on the environment. Over the past 15 years, the Index has enabled businesses and organisations to measure their environmental management and benchmark against competitors and other companies in their geographical region.

The survey looks at all aspects of an organisation’s environmental performance, including:• Corporate strategy – demonstration of strong leadership to address

sustainability issues• Integration – the inclusion of environmental issues in strategic decision making• Environmental management – the provision of sustainable products and

services, and the engagement of the supply chain to improve environmental performance

• Assurance and disclosure – established reporting criteria for sustainability and the sharing of information

• Reductions in energy and water consumption• Waste and resource management – preventing waste wherever possible

and making more sustainable use of waste produced.

The Gold Award represents a score of 90 to 95 per cent, which compares to an average score among participants of 80 per cent, and follows a Silver Award that was presented to the Portakabin Group in 2012.

Commenting on the award, Derek Carter, Chief Executive of the Portakabin Group, said, “This award is another opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to being even more environmentally responsible. Our progress in the Index over the past year is a tremendous achievement, going from silver to gold. We were also delighted to score higher than the average for the construction sector which is further recognition of our pioneering position in reducing impact on the environment in the provision of building solutions.”

The Portakabin Group’s sustainability achievements over the past year have included: • Succeeding in its objective of zero waste to landfill at its manufacturing centre in

York a year ahead of its December 2013 target • Using new materials in the manufacture of Portakabin buildings that have a

recycled content of 35 per cent• The launch of the new Energy-Saver range to enable Portakabin customers to

reduce energy usage by more than 60 per cent, and benefit from some of the UK’s best-performing sustainable buildings

• Designing out the use of painted components, reducing airborne solvent emissions by 20 per cent

• The development of the revolutionary new Yorkon off-site building system, which can reduce heat loss by 32 per cent compared to Building Regulations requirements

• The introduction of a sustainable food service at its international headquarters and production centre in York. Initiatives include chefs’ clothing made from recycled PET; the use of fish from sustainable sources; recycling of coffee grinds; cooking oil re-used to fuel food delivery vehicles, and the anaerobic digestion of food waste.

Bishop Edward King Chapel Takes The Wood Awards 2013 Gold Award

Chairman of the judges, Michael Morrison of Purcell UK said, “Niall McLaughlin’s Bishop Edward King Chapel is a stunning and worthy Gold Award winner. It embodies the Wood Awards celebration of excellence in design and craftsmanship in wood, and even exceeds the hope that the building might be ‘a work of art which would touch the spirit’.”

The independent judging panel, which includes previous Wood Awards winners Adam Khan and last year’s Gold Award winner David Morley, Hopkins Architect’s Jim Greaves and Andrew Lawrence from Arup, praised the team for its attention to detail, careful use of materials and elegant curved glulam columns and beams which create the light and soaring internal timber structure.

The Wood Awards category winners included The Colyer-Fergusson Building in Kent by Tim Ronalds Architects for the Commercial & Public Access Award; Church Walk in London by David Mikhail Architects for the Private Award – the second year in a row this practice has won the Private category; Magheralin Parish Church in Northern Ireland by Waddington-McClure Architects for the Repair & Adaptive Reuse Award, and the undulating RoominaRoom in London by Atmos Studio for the Small Project Award.

In the Wood Awards furniture categories, the Production Made Furniture Award was won by Pengelly Design’s ‘Theo Chair’, and EJ Bespoke Furniture’s chest of drawers

‘Ripples’ in 3D veneer European ash took the Bespoke Furniture Award. ‘Worldscape’, a second Atmos Studio project comprising 16 metres of continuous integrated furniture as a map of the world in Latvian birch plywood with seating for 80 people, was given the Wood Awards Judges’ Special Award.

Chair of the Wood Awards furniture judges, Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture, said, “Pengelly Design’s Theo chair is a remarkable piece of design and manufacturing. Ripples by Edward Johnson beautifully exploits this relatively new material of 3D veneer and is an excellent combination of restraint and flamboyance, and the extraordinary translation of a huge idea into a functional product that is Alex Haw’s Worldscape is deliciously mad and completely refreshing.” The furniture judging panel includes Katie Walker of Katie Walker Furniture and previous Wood Awards winner, Rod Wales of Wales & Wales and renowned furniture designer John Makepeace. >>>>

>>>>For the first time this year, a surfboard maker was highly commended for their work in wood. Otter Surfboards from Cornwall was praised by the judges for their creativity and exceptional woodworking as well as their work with the National Trust, and “using wood’s best properties – naturally beautiful, strong and light”.

This year, the Wood Awards was launched at Ecobuild in March, the shortlisted Furniture categories pieces were exhibited in person at 100% Design - the biggest event during the London Design Festival, and the full shortlist was showcased at Timber Expo in Birmingham, along with a series of talks from selected shortlisted projects.

Chair of the judges, Michael Morrison said, “All the projects we inspected were showcasing both the versatility of timber as a building material as well as the great pool of talent in the design and construction industries. Two things were particularly pleasing – the high standards of craftsmanship

that we saw and, perhaps more importantly, that we were able to give awards this year to some modest schemes where the selection of timber, the design and the workmanship have produced a splendid result on a tight budget. This must surely be the message that these awards are design to spread – that wood is a beautiful and economical material that can be used to great advantage in any building project.”

As the flagship for wood in the best of British architecture, furniture and design, the Wood Awards is made possible by the major sponsorship of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), Canada Wood, the Carpenters’ Company, TRADA and Wood for Good. Other sponsors include American Softwoods, BRE and the Forestry Commission. For full project information on the shortlist and winners, visit www.woodawards.com

Kemper System’s stand (S1520/21) at this year’s Ecobuild (4-6 March) continues to promote the market leading solvent-free, sustainable and odourless Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing system and Stratex Warm Roof System.

Kemper System’s innovative Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free and odourless system is the first solvent-free wet-on-wet cold liquid waterproofing system available on the UK

market and remains the only product of its kind commercially available. The past year has seen continued growth in sales for the hard-wearing and durable waterproofing membrane, which bonds to almost any substrate to create a totally seamless, monolithic, U/V stable, elastomeric membrane.

Based on an 80% castor-oil formulation derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system also incorporates a flexible non-woven reinforcement fleece, which is manufactured using 25% recycled plastic bottle content. As the resin saturates the fleece in a single application process, the cured membrane cannot delaminate. Offered with a 20-year warranty, the ground-breaking system is both solvent-free

and odourless, making it not only ideal for sustainable new builds but also perfect for upgrades to occupied buildings as the lack of nuisance odours means that work can be carried out while the building remains in normal use.

Suitable for application on top of virtually all existing roofing materials, eco-friendly Kemperol 2K-PUR can even help to prevent excessive waste from being sent to landfill during roof upgrades by avoiding the need to strip out the existing failed substrate.

Complementing the sustainability credentials of the Kemperol 2K-PUR system, Kemper System’s Stratex Warm Roof System offers a completely integrated warm roof system that incorporates primers, vapour barrier, insulation and waterproofing with a range of optional surfacing. Featuring a rigid PIR insulation board with a unique tongue and groove interlocking joint, the system significantly reduces cold bridging and gives a much smoother surface finish.

Kemper System will also be showcasing the company’s Kempergro Green Roof System, a three-section system comprising a reservoir attenuation composite, growing medium and vegetation. The reservoir attenuation layer includes an upper filter fleece, central reservoir core and lower protection fleece, which are manufactured from 90% recycled materials and factory bonded to maximise performance and simplify installation.

Suitable for use with the Kemperol 2K PUR waterproofing membrane, Kempergro has a growing medium that is 100% composed of recycled brick, tiles and green compost, which is processed and graded to support an extensive range of sedum, meadow and lawn roof media. Visitors to Kemper System’s stand will be able to see how each of the systems have been used in practice, including how the Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing membrane and Stratex Warm Roof System have been used together on various high profile projects.

There will also be a number of display areas where visitors to the stand will be able to view samples of the cured product to experience first hand the flexibility and durability it offers.

Comments marketing manager of Kemper System, Stuart Hicks: “Ecobuild is a fantastic event. There is such a strong appetite for genuinely sustainable products and eco solutions amongst both specifiers and end users and Ecobuild is the UK focal point. The growth in Kemperol 2K-PUR and our Stratex Warm Roof System really demonstrates that specifiers are no longer playing lip service to sustainable construction but are genuinely putting sustainability at the heart of our built environment: Kemper System is delighted to be part of that move towards a greener future.” www.kempersystem.co.uk

Selectaglaze, the leading secondary glazing specialist is making its Ecobuild debut.

The UK’s carbon reduction commitment can only be met if the energy performance of the current building stock is massively improved via a range of retrofit solutions. Large numbers of these buildings are traditional or listed properties with inherently poor window insulation where replacement glazing is often inappropriate for both heritage and economic reasons.

Selectaglaze’s bespoke secondary glazing offers a rapid and minimally disruptive solution. The incorporation of low emissivity glazing more than halves the heat loss through the window combination and highly efficient seals markedly improves air tightness, resulting in greater comfort levels, better usage of space and lower energy costs.

Selectaglaze has worked in conjunction with English Heritage on a programme of research including the Bolsover Test House where a secondary window glazed with Pilkington’s Spacia sealed units recorded a centre of pane U-value of 0.8.

The use of this technology in conjunction with air tightness measures and mechanical ventilation using heat recovery could allow a refurbished listed building to get close to EnerPHit standards.

Secondary glazing is regarded as a reversible adaptation, thus acceptable to a range of conservation bodies including English Heritage, Historic Scotland, SPAB, The Victorian Society and The Georgian Group.

In addition to improving energy performance secondary glazing will deal effectively with environmental noise problems, achieving attenuation levels in the region of 45dB; highly desirable to many inner city regeneration schemes. Security can also be an important issue for many building occupants, so products fitted with appropriate locks and strengthened glass are offered that achieve a Police preferred specification under the ‘Secured by Design’ initiative.

Established since 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the UK’s leading designer, manufacturer and installer of secondary glazing systems and submits products to rigorous independent testing. The Company has worked with a very wide range of public and private clients and in many fine buildings, including those listed at Grade 1.

Selectaglaze’s Chairman, Meredith Childerstone says: “We decided to exhibit at Ecobuild this year because not only do we have exciting products to offer but we also feel that this year’s event is going to be the best ever, particularly with the selection of BRE as the show’s official Research and Innovation Partner. We will be exhibiting within the “Sustainable Design & Construction” zone which is an area where visitors can learn about the latest design ideas, future construction materials and solutions to sustainable construction challenges.”

The longevity of this window design says a lot about its versatility to suit many different types of property, residential and commercial, as well as its visual appeal for those

designing buildings and using them. Today’s energy efficiency agenda has shifted priorities in almost every area of building product specification to put thermal performance ahead of aesthetics. That’s hardly surprising given that Part L currently demands a window that achieves a U-value of 1.6 W/m2K for refurbishment projects. So clients, developers and architects face the challenge of balancing long term sustainability - including energy performance in-use with aesthetics and budget.Such a challenge has at times suggested the scope to use VSS windows could be more limited in future and posed many questions. How can traditional timber sash windows match the long term low maintenance properties of aluminium and PVC-U? How can PVC-U versions match the aesthetics of timber and aluminium? How can the design of VSS windows in any material meet the tough thermal requirements

of the latest Part L? And how can the VSS window compete with the popularity and usually lower unit cost of casements, reversible and tilt and turns? As thermal insulation standards for windows have been continuously rising since the arrival of double glazing in the mainstream in the 1970s, forward thinking window manufacturers have always been ahead of the curve and prepared to invest to meet architect and developer needs. In the case of the VSS, that means continuously improving thermal performance without detracting from looks or making the window prohibitively expensive. That gives today’s generation of aluminium VSS window the edge over timber and PVC-U alternatives for a number of reasons.

Striking the optimum balanceWith its long term visual appeal combined with low maintenance requirements, aluminium is often the material of choice for windows and doors for all kinds of projects – heritage, modern and contemporary. In many cases, aluminium windows can be regarded as ‘fit and forget’ as they retain their exterior appearance without the need for regular repainting and their structural and mechanical design keeps technical maintenance to a minimum. Aluminium is the only alternative to traditional timber when it comes to replicating slim sightlines. Unfortunately the design of PVC-U box sashes will struggle to achieve the same result, especially on smaller VSS windows, as the profile requires larger chambers to deliver the thermal insulation necessary. There is also the question of colour fading or discolouring over time on PVC-U frames, a fate that powder coated or anodised aluminium frames do not suffer. Timber VSS windows will need some form of surface re-coating as frequently as every five years in some cases. It is not only a costly exercise to appoint contractors to undertake this repainting but it also causes unwelcome disruption to tenants, homeowners and - in the case of commercial and public properties – building owners and users. The more maintenance cycles that are required for a window installation, the more likely it is that its long term sustainability rating will suffer.

Planner-friendly designTraditional timber sash windows feature slim framing elements throughout so any replication in alternative materials must do the same. Often planners will start with the requirement for exact replacement on refurbishment projects in sensitive locations or listed buildings and in some cases only timber will fit the bill. There are many other occasions, however, where aluminium is perfectly acceptable to planning officers, subject to meeting specific approvals, such as in the London Borough of Westminster in the case of Alumatherm VSS windows. Aluminium profile has a major advantage over PVC-U when it comes to slimness. The Alumatherm aluminium profile, for example, features a meeting

rail with a height of just 36mm compared with 48mm for a typical PVC-U VSS. Frame depth is 114mm for the aluminium version compared to 125-136mm for PVC-U. Importantly, these reduced dimensions deliver a whole window frame slimness which helps to maximise available daylight within homes and buildings without compromising high levels of thermal insulation.

Rising thermalsWith the continuous toughening of thermal performance, innovation has been the key to ensuring architects and specifiers can use their preferred materials throughout the whole build process, not just windows and doors. Aluminium VSS windows continue to keep ahead of requirements thanks to a combination of profile improvement and a sealed unit configuration that’s already proven to insulate extremely well. Part L 2013 is expected to demand a B Window Energy Rating (WER) and a 1.5 W/m2K

U-value for dwellings, a performance level which is already available with products including Alumatherm. The key to continuously improving the insulation properties lie in several elements of the window. One of the most important being the thermal break that features in all today’s aluminium window systems. In the case of Alumatherm, that is a 25mm polyurethane section bonded using high performance Azon resins to stop heat transmission through the frame. But the glazing specification must also be capable of providing superior thermal insulation without eliminating beneficial solar gain.Fortunately the glass processing industry already has the products available through a consistently reliable supply chain. 24mm double glazed units typically feature in the B rated aluminium VSS. This is configured with a 4mm low iron glass on the outside pane, a 16mm warm edge space bar, 90% argon gas fill and a 4mm Planitherm low-e softcoat interior pane. Ultimately these innovations give the VSS a bright outlook. Other window styles may have grown in popularity but they do not necessarily meet aesthetic goals. Choosing the latest generation aluminium VSS will strike the balance perfectly.

OPINION

Phil Marris looks at why architects need to become more involved in the selecting of heating and ventilation systems, to ensure a project’s sustainability.

Architecture as we know it has been forever altered in the face of climate change. Government incentives, changes in regulations and green-building measurement schemes such as BREEAM and LEED that means projects are facing increased pressure to fulfil environmental, social and economic requirements – resulting in a need for low-energy, sustainable buildings.

Through rapidly growing public interest in BREEAM benchmark standards - with high scoring assessments increasing property and rental value - clients are now demanding low-energy buildings in both performance and design. Additionally, to reach the UK’s target

of an 80% reduction in C02 emissions by 2050, the government has introduced several incentive schemes, one example being the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Buildings are responsible for around 48% of the UK’s C02 emissions and Building Regulations have also been closely reviewed, with Part L - referring to thermal efficiency standards of a project – requiring all new domestic builds, extensions and renovations, to show a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2016.

These considerations, along with many others a few, have resulted in architects now needing to consider the future-proofing of a project, the reduction of its energy consumption and how it can deliver comfort and well-being benefits to its occupants. To ensure the overall sustainability of a building meets these requirements, it is essential architects become even more involved with the design of heating and ventilation solutions to deliver optimal thermal comfort, with minimal energy consumption.

It’s good to know then, that radiator technology has advanced dramatically in recent years. The biggest area of improvement is in energy-efficiency with the introduction of Low-H20 heat emitters. These have less than 5% of the thermal mass of traditional radiators and operate with 90% less water running through them - meaning they buffer less heat and react at least three times faster to fluctuations in temperatures.

More recently, the introduction of Jaga’s unique Dynamic Boost Effect technology means Low-H20 radiators can perform efficiently at temperatures as low as 35˚C when twinned with renewable heat sources like heat pumps. The DBE unit is integrated with the Low-H20 heat exchanger and its thermal activators help to deliver the required room temperature up to nine times faster than a standard radiator. When compared to traditional heating systems, the use of DBE technology can dramatically reduce energy use and it means that a designer needn’t compromise on aesthetics when specifying an energy-efficient low temperature heating system.

Additionally, architects need to consider the maintenance of good IAQ in highly insulated and sealed buildings. A build up of CO2 – a key factor determining IAQ – can cause headaches, poor concentration, and lethargy which is best controlled by the installation of highly responsive, demand controlled (DCV) combined heating and ventilation solution. This type of system monitors environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and CO2 level and introduces fresh air pre-warmed if required, when and to the extent that is necessary. This creates a healthy environment without wasteful overheating or over ventilating. As aesthetics are also proven to influence the comfort and well-being of a building’s occupants, it is important that the overall ‘look and feel’ of a building should still be thoroughly considered. The versatility in radiator design now available – from adaptable, trench heating systems, to low-profile freestanding radiators, to artistically inspired wall-mounted units - means that architects and interior designers not only have the heating technology to ensure greater sustainability, but can choose the aesthetics that best match their design concept

With the global spotlight focused on carbon emission reductions, clients are now expecting architects to create more environmentally sustainable buildings in both design and operation. To do so, architects must become even more involved in the design of heating and ventilation systems in order to ensure their designs are sustainable and long-term energy-efficient.www.jaga.co.uk

Granite Transformations, the home makeover specialist that deals exclusively through its own network of showrooms, has announced the debut of its new porcelain work surface collection. A completely new raw material for the brand and amongst the first on the market, porcelain is smooth and refined to the touch, but one of the hardest materials on Earth, making it beautiful and durable for kitchen and bathroom makeovers.

Porcelain is a ceramic material made with kaolin, a fine white china clay, which is fired at temperatures up to 1400°C. Its properties include outstanding hardness, strength and durability, as well as high resistance to chemical attack and thermal shock. The new material meets the same technical specifications as Granite Transformations’ granite, quartz and recycled glass surfaces, if not slightly superior toughness.

There are three new work surface colours in the Porcelain Collection: Terra Chiara (1606) and Terra di Siena (1607), each with varying flecks of gold, brown, black and white, and the finely grained Sierra Nevada (1624), which is lighter and more neutral in colour, like a ‘snowy range’. All feature the brand’s characteristic ¼” (6.7mm) slimline profile, enabling the material to be fitted directly over existing worktops and tiled surfaces, and a composite construction of porcelain granules and a high tech polymer resin that ensures outstanding strength, flexibility and durability.

The new porcelain finishes are perfect for kitchen worktops and splashbacks, vanity units and wash basin countertops, bath panels and surrounds, shower liners, and hard flooring, the large 3m long slab sizes enabling virtually seamless decorative surfaces. In common with all the brand’s surfaces, they are fabricated and installed by Granite Transformations showrooms and come with a lifetime warranty.

“Granite Transformations prides itself on providing stylish, high quality and environment-friendly products and our new Porcelain Collection captures these attributes and has a distinctive, welcoming feel,” explains Danny Hanlon, the company’s Chief Operating Officer. “Our manufacturing arm was approached by a major high-end producer of bathroom products about the possibility of incorporating remnant porcelain into our product line. Considering we are already at the forefront of using recycled raw materials to design stronger, more durable, eco-friendly granite, quartz and glass worktops and finishing surfaces, this was a natural progression for us.”

Supplied by one of the world’s largest manufacturers of designer bathroom furniture, the recycled porcelain comes from reject bathtubs, sinks and sanitary ware, which are crushed to workable fragments and used in the distinctive Granite Transformations manufacturing process. Beige and brown colour tones are contributed by the ‘bisque’ or central section of the porcelain, while the white flecks come from the enamel used to glaze the material. The proportion of post-industrial porcelain content is 51%, together with recycled glass and granite, underlining the material’s ‘green’ credentials.

Porcelain has been used in bathrooms for centuries, because it is super strong and durable, as well as being waterproof, clean and sanitary, not allowing dirt or bacteria to penetrate. It is also easy to clean, will withstand aggressive cleaning products, and lasts a lifetime, typically put through the equivalent of 20 years’ performance testing, or 80,000 scrubs. What better then for bathroom rejects, than becoming stylish bathroom finishes? For nearest showroom call 0800 044 5393 or visit the website at www.granitetransformations.co.uk

Old mill buildings can offer fascinating potential for restoration and repurposing, but as by nature they are located near water sources, they can be at risk from flooding. Such was the dilemma faced by the Green Hill Outreach Trust, a Christian charity that runs a community and conference programme from the Burmington Mill, an 18th century former flour mill.

In July 2007 the worst floods in the Shipston on Stour area of Warwickshire in over one hundred years washed seven feet of muddy water into the ground floor, destroying the fixtures and fittings and resulting in a major insurance claim.

While the claim was fully settled by the insurance company, the risk factors meant that costs were bound to escalate and the centre was faced with two choices: A doubled premium with an excess of £22,000 – or renovations to make the interior of the ground floor more ‘water-friendly’ and therefore not requiring cover against flooding.

The latter seemed the most sensible and affordable choice for the charity, although it meant some careful research into the most appropriate solutions for such an adaptable design. A concept began to crystallise to create de-mountable wall-panels that could be removed in the event of a flood warning and then replaced afterwards – preferably

in a sturdy material that could survive any damage should the waters rise too quickly. The answer soon presented itself in the form of DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface.

Fran Wilson of the Green Hill Outreach Trust explains, “It was while at the Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham where we looking for a ground source heating system that we first came across DuPont™ Corian® and on finding out more about this beautiful, silky-feeling, non-porous material, it became clear that it might be the ideal solution for our new wall-coverings.” The charity began discussions with Geoff Swift, Technical Consultant at CD UK Ltd, the distributors of DuPont™ Corian® in the UK, as to whether the material was suitable for the intended use and how best to apply it. In the event of another flood it would

be necessary to easily remove the panels, dry out the walls and then replace the panels quickly and easily, with a minimum of disruption to the daily life of the centre, and minimal financial implications. Challenges included the uneven walls of the old building and the fact that the panels would have to sit above non load-bearing plinth heaters 9 which can simply be hosed down and dried out after a flood), so would need to be both de-mountable and fully supported by the wall structure. Furthermore, the renovation design for the ground floor, including a new refectory, kitchen, chapel and main foyer (159 square metres in all), incorporated some curving stud walls and decorative features which would require individual customisation.

DuPont™ Corian® proved to be typically adaptable in meeting all the key requirements for this unique project. Easily workable into the size, shape and form required and being lightweight yet robust enough to serve this particular purpose, the material was fabricated into panels that were then mounted using an ingenious system of aluminium rails and ‘industrial-strength’ Velcro for rapid removal in emergencies. Each panel is numbered and cross referenced to the mounting system for equally easy replacement into the correct position.

The colour chosen for this application was Mojave, a subtle neutral tone from a carefully developed and exclusive palette for DuPont™ Corian® of over eighty choices, and the material has also been used to create bespoke furniture features in the Mojave and Medea colours, as well as seamlessly integrated worksurfaces and sinks for the refectory kitchen.

Fran Wilson continues, “We are absolutely thrilled with the choice of DuPont™ Corian® for our ‘water-friendly’ renovation. This design is not only highly practical, but also has resulted in a quiet, minimalistic elegance, which is a delight to the team and all our visitors. We are very peaceful about the possibility of any future floods, knowing that our key fixtures, fittings and equipment – including cookers and fridges on wheels - are easily movable, and that as soon as any flood water abates, we can dry out and get back to normal as soon as possible, with minimal costs for restoration. We would very strongly recommend this use of DuPont™ Corian® to any business in a flood area, it really is a fantastic solution.”www.cdukltd.co.uk

The newly-launched ArtLED has been specified by Kevan Shaw Lighting Design and installed by DHA Designs for ‘Only in England: Photographs by Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr’, the opening exhibition in the new Media Space Gallery at the Science Museum. It has also been shortlisted as ‘Interior Luminaire of the year’ at the Lighting Design Awards 2014.

Manufactured from extruded and diecast aluminium with an epoxy polyester powder-coated finish, the ArtLED uses the latest Xicato XSM 1,300lm Artist series LED and combines a highly crafted and designed lighting fitting with high CRI (Ra ≥ 95) and colour consistency. The fitting is available with a self-dim facility or Dimmable Via Analogue 1-10V and DALI.

Beam reflector options include 14°, 27° and 52° and a special Wall Wash Reflector allows the ArtLED to be used for a range of different lighting tasks and applications. The advent of a Glare Guard Baffle for both narrow and medium reflectors eliminates the large quantity of glare traditionally associated with LED fittings. Braintree District Council’s former offices in Witham, Essex, have been refurbished with Armstrong Ceilings.

A combination of mineral and metal tiles and canopies from Armstrong Ceilings were specified for the refurbishment of a former council building for their cost-effectiveness, aesthetics and acoustic properties.

Some 3,000m² of Armstrong’s white Ultima MicroLook BE 600mm x 600mm tiles in a 6mm Silhouette grid were used in the open office areas while Axiom KE (Knife Edge) canopies with Ultima SL2 planks feature in the reception and corridors, 20 Optima circular canopies in the café and break-out areas, and metal Tegular 2 tiles in the kitchen.

The Ultima mineral tiles meet sound absorption Class C while the Optima mineral canopies provide 2.00 sabines of sound absorption per piece as well as 82% recycled content. Both feature 87% light reflectance.

They were specified by architects Swanke Hayden Connell for the redevelopment of former Braintree District Council offices in Witham, Essex, into a new home for the 600 employees of Cofunds, now part of Legal & General.

The brief was to create a cost-efficient, modern and comfortable place of work for Cofunds staff.

Project leader Angela Sasso said: “A mineral fibre ceiling tile met the cost plan and we chose to upgrade some client-facing areas with the plank system in the reception and corridors. The canopies were used in the break-out areas and café to provide interest, acoustics and to take the eye away from areas where we proposed an exposed ceiling. “They were proposed in the staff areas as we felt these areas could be a bit more daring in the design for this particular client. The client is very happy with the result.”

Colleague Bob Bissett added: “The Armstrong products were cost-effective and cover the services, making the office environment more attractive. They met the design criteria set at the outset of the project.”

The refurbishment of the 70,000ft² brick-faced building over four storeys took main contractor Como Group seven months and specialist sub-contractor BPC Interiors three months with an average 14 operatives to install the ceilings.

BPC’s QA/H&S manager Alan Edwards said: “Every project has its challenges and Cofunds was no different. Part of the second floor was occupied throughout the project which required some construction activities to take place out of hours. Due consideration was given to the residents and public who live close to the site and any impact our works could have had on them.

“The Armstrong products used on this project were excellent and the assistance we were given was invaluable, not only because the reps visited site to advise but because they were interested in how the project was progressing throughout and made themselves available to the site team whenever needed.”www.armstrong.co.uk

For interior flooring projects, bamboo may not be the first material that comes to mind. However, its exceptional performance, aesthetic and environmental attributes make it a strong alternative to traditional wood. One of the leading UK distributors of bamboo flooring is Moso Bamboo Surfaces sole UK distributor of Moso bamboo products and can also provide expert design, product and installation advice, and has in-house capability to

re-manufacture any bamboo product for bespoke design and applications. The company stocks one of the widest ranges of traditional engineered bamboo and other bamboo flooring types.Bamboo panels are made by splitting carefully selected bamboo stems into strips, which are first treated against mould and insects and then steamed to caramelise the sugars which results in a beautiful natural caramel colour. The strips are then heat pressed and glued into panels. To make into panels, strips can be connected in a number of ways; plain pressed, side pressed, or density/strand woven, depending upon the required finished look. Panels are then ready to use in a wide variety of ways,

flooring and internal cladding being the most common, but this versatile material is also used to make kitchen and bathroom units, furniture and doors. If the bamboo is additionally heat thermally treated, it can be used for external landscaping projects such as decking or exterior cladding. The performance of bamboo is equal to any real wood or wood veneer, and in the case of the strand woven or density type, it is in fact harder than the best tropical hardwood species, thus making it the perfect choice for areas of heavy traffic – domestic or commercial. Bamboo flooring is exceptionally good looking and durable, and offers a wide variety of styles, sizes and finishes. For instance, longer length and wider boards are available using three layers of solid bamboo to maximise stability. If a seamless surface is required, choose a 2-ply tongue and grooved system, or if ease of fixing is important, there is a choice of Uniclic

system types which is constructed to provide great stability and easy installation. Moso flooring is exceptionally versatile and answers most design requirements. For instance, Unibamboo combines the benefits of vinyl with the charm of bamboo flooring, where thin bamboo strips are pressed onto a latex backing, providing a flexible, light, sound-absorbing, low cost flooring solution. Skirting boards and accessory strips are available for most flooring types. In the fitting and maintenance of flooring, bamboo outperforms solid wood. In the strand woven/density type, its composition is made up of individual strips of bamboo which are compressed under extreme pressure and then cross pressed to achieve great hardness and density. As a result of this treatment, bamboo is less susceptible to shrink, warp and swell than solid wood species, thus providing a much more stable floor. It is also anti-static, which if used in flooring projects where electrical components such as computers are present, the damage and danger from static is considerably reduced. Bamboo can also help to facilitate a healthy indoor environment as it has anti-allergenic properties, which can make a difference where large numbers of people gather. Any product used in the design or construction of buildings which have anti-allergenic properties, should consider bamboo as a preferred material choice.Environmentally, bamboo outperforms wood every time. Moso bamboo is probably the most environmentally friendly and sustainable species in the world, due to its harvesting and production processes which are carried out to the highest standards of environmental and manufacturing control. The species of bamboo used is exceptionally fast growing, therefore making it non-viable as a food source for Panda’s which graze off low, slow-growing varieties.Leading manufacturers Moso produces top quality products that meet the highest technical, functional and aesthetic requirements and provides a product guarantee of up to 30 years. Products are made in production facilities that are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, thus meeting the most stringent requirements for quality, human wellbeing, safety and the environment.Bamboo from Moso is the only bamboo company which has full carbon footprint and LCA certification which guarantees that all its products are carbon neutral (or better) over their full life cycle. If these products are used in ‘green premium’ projects, they will contribute to a higher score in the leading sustainable building certification systems LEED and BREEAM.www.mosobamboosurfaces.co.uk

Latest figures released by Carpet Recycling UK reveal a record-breaking 107,000 tonnes of waste carpet were reused, recycled and recovered in the UK during 2013 – up 21% (22,000 tonnes) on the previous year. This landfill diversion rate of 27% means that CRUK has exceeded its original target of 25% by 2015 two years early. This target was set in 2008 when the industry’s award-winning not-for-profit organisation was launched to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising annually in the UK. Increased volumes have been helped by a three-fold rise – from 15 to 45 - in the number of local authorities providing dedicated carpet collection facilities, as well as the creation of new outlets and innovative end uses for recycled carpet waste encouraged by CRUK. With the support of key UK manufacturers and distributors keen to demonstrate producer responsibility for their products, CRUK has been instrumental in changing the perception of carpet waste for the better; from uplifted materials to post-production and installation off-cuts. Reuse and recycling of waste carpet increased 19% or by 7,000 tonnes and energy recovery rose 31% or by 15,000 tonnes in 2013 compared to 2012. CRUK’s new ambitious

landfill diversion target is 60% by 2020. Domestic households are the main source of carpets, which are recovered at end-of-life via local authority recycling centres and bulky waste collections. Over the past 18 months, more unitary and disposal-based local authorities in the UK that are now collecting carpets at HWRC sites means that around 25% of local authorities in the UK are now separating carpets and avoiding landfill. According to CRUK research, more than 200 Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) sites are now involved in segregating carpets, giving more than seven million households the opportunity to recycle their carpets. The average household carpet disposal rate is 6.7 kgs per year, with a range from 3.8 to 9.6 kgs dependent on catchment area size, plus length of time collections have been established. Collection levels are higher in the more densely populated areas. For more information, call 0161 440 8325 or visit www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

At Skanda Vale, a multi-faith ashram in Wales, an unusual resident – Valli the elephant – is enjoying toasty new accommodation thanks to a wood burning boiler from Euroheat. Simon Holden, co-founder of Euroheat, explains the project.

Skanda Vale, ‘The Community of the Many Names of God’, resides near Carmarthen in Wales and was founded in 1973 by Sri Lankan Guru, Sri Subramanium. Apart from Skanda Vale’s 90,000 pilgrims, an important area of work is animal care. There are a large number of different animals, including Valli the temple elephant, a herd of cows, buffalo, deer, goats, plus many birds, rabbits and dogs – many of whom have been rescued from slaughter or neglect.

Valli was found as a baby by Sri Lankan villagers, sheltering with a herd of wild buffalo. She was taken to an elephant orphanage and a year later donated to the Guru by President Jayawardena, in recognition of his service to Sri Lankans living in the UK.

Last year, Valli was built a spacious new home, including deep-filled sand pits to dig for treats, a knobbly tree trunk, for scratching those hard to reach places, and a heated waterfall and plunge pool, kept warm by a 30kW HDG Navora log biomass boiler, combined with a 2,500 litre accumulator. The boiler also heats the walls of Valli’s house, giving her a nice warm place to lean against – one lucky elephant!

Why biomass?Wood fuelled heating, logs in particular, was the ideal choice for Skanda Vale thanks to the vast amount of trees grown on the ashram’s land. Its green credentials also fitted with the ethos of Skanda Vale and once the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive kicks off, the scheme will be eligible for RHI returns.

About the boiler: The HDG Navora is a down firing gasification split-log boiler, with a front loading fuel chamber. The large refuelling and cleaning doors have an opening angle of over 100 degrees which makes for simple operation. An ingenious rear ventilation feature has been integrated, resulting in low surface temperatures, keeping the heat where it belongs; in the heating system.

HDG boilers feature Lambda controls to ensure efficiency, as much as 90%. The controller optimises combustion and emissions levels by using information provided by a sensor. Flue gas is continually sampled allowing precise primary and secondary air actuator adjustments, resulting in low fuel consumption and maximum efficiency. Put simply, as wood burns its composition changes; Lambda adjusts the airflow to meet its changing requirements.

“Euroheat have been great all the way from design to installation and commissioning of our Navora 30kW boiler,” said Brother Stefan from Skanda Vale. “The boiler is easy to use, highly efficient and the boiler controller gives us an incredible amount of information on the state of the boiler and buffer tank.” www.euroheat.co.uk

Sussex-based British fan manufacturer Vent-Axia, a leader in low-carbon ventilation, was delighted to welcome Prime Minister David Cameron on a visit to its headquarters in Fleming Way, Crawley, West Sussex, on Thursday 23 January 2014. Mr Cameron visited the successful Sussex firm to view its assembly lines that were brought back to the UK from China. The new production lines create 35 new site jobs in a tough economic climate and increase the number of its assembly staff on site employed by 50% compared to before the reshoring.

Vent-Axia completed the reshoring of the balance of its domestic fan manufacturing, from China back to the UK, in January 2013 with the launch of three new production lines at its Crawley site. The culmination of a two-year project, the new assembly lines doubled the company’s on-site manufacturing of its residential unitary fans. The company invested over £350k in tooling for the new production lines, as well as investing in building works to incorporate the new manufacturing.

On his visit Mr Cameron toured the production lines with Ronnie George CEO of Volution, Vent-Axia’s parent company, and spoke to new staff that had joined the company since the reshoring. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I was very pleased to visit Vent-Axia to see what a positive effect reshoring has had on the company and meet the people who work there. Vent-Axia is a great example of a company that has brought manufacturing back to the UK, creating jobs for hard-working people. As part of our long-term economic plan, we will continue to do all we can to make Britain the best place to start, grow and do business.”

While at Vent-Axia Mr Cameron was also very interested to see a cheque written to the company by the former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, which paid for fans installed in 10 Downing Street in 1945. Having never been banked, the cheque takes pride of place in Vent-Axia’s reception. Ronnie George, CEO at Volution Holdings, the group that owns Vent-Axia, said: “We are delighted Mr Cameron was able to visit our headquarters at Crawley yesterday and view our production lines. Reshoring the balance of our residential fan production to the UK made sense due to a number of factors not just from a competitive position, but also customer service and responsiveness is substantially enhanced when manufacturing our products locally.

“Increasing our UK manufacturing capacity goes to underpin Volution’s ambitions to be a more substantial international player in the ventilation market, which is illustrated by our acquisition of two Swedish ventilation companies during the last 18 months. Moving Vent-Axia’s manufacturing back to the UK allows us to both supply products abroad to the wider Volution group and prepares us for further international expansion. I was therefore delighted that TowerBrook Capital Partners backed this initiative practically on the first day of new ownership.”

Also present at the visit was Henry Smith MP for Crawley who opened the three new production lines last year. The new UK production lines have improved Vent-Axia’s service offering allowing the company to manage stock levels to help with stock availability. The UK location also makes it easier for Vent-Axia to undergo the continuous development of products and on-going design enhancements to meet customer needs, with the lead time for introduction of product enhancements or improvements reduced. Vent-Axia employs 270 staff at its headquarters in Fleming Way, Crawley, West Sussex. The addition of 35 jobs at its Sussex site, including 20 new production staff and 6 service support staff, has been a welcome boost to the local Crawley job market.

As well as investing in the local economy Vent-Axia’s commitment to British manufacturing has seen the company further investing in UK logistics which has helped lower the embodied energy of products by reducing carbon emissions. A reduction in international shipping and flights has resulted in a saving of up to 15 Tonnes of CO² a year.

Headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex and with more than 75 years as an influential industry leader, Vent-Axia continues to set the standard in controlling the flow of fresh air, its temperature, humidity and cleanliness. Each year the company supplies air management solutions for over half a million installations across the residential, commercial and industrial sectors in the UK and around the World. www.vent-axia.com

The owner of an aspirational self-build home, featured on the television series, “Building the Dream”, has made use of two different systems from underfloor heating specialist Timoleon to create a comfortable and controllable environment within the highly insulated German manufactured structure.

The single and two-storey residence, located in one of the UK’s fastest rising property hot-spots at Over near Cambridge, has been constructed using an advanced off-site manufactured timber framed system offering optimum levels of sustainability as well as style. The elevations display a blend of white render, timber boarding and high performance glazing, including three sets of sliding doors facing onto the courtyard style garden.

In harmony with the high performance building envelope, the designers for the project have specified a very energy efficient heating system. Installed on the ground and upper floors respectively, it features both the Staple and the Foilboard Batten systems from Timoleon designed to deliver the space heating. Pure Heating and Plumbing of Cambridge carried out the installation work. It is a characteristic of both heat pumps and modern condensing boilers that they operate most efficiently in combination with underfloor heating systems, due to their flow temperatures. In this case the space heating demands are relatively low and the M&E contractor decided to specify two of the options from the Timoleon product portfolio; enhancing the efficiency and facilitating the responsiveness required.

The Staple system has been developed primarily for the installation of underfloor heating pipe coils over screeded sub-floors, with the pipework itself being held in place using barbed clips, which bite into the insulation. The Timoleon Gridded Insulation boards feature an aluminium foil surface that offers enhanced retention characteristics as well as a convenient grid guide, which assists in achieving a regular pattern at the specified 150 mm centres.

The Foilboard Batten system’s panels are intended to fit between timber battens and feature soft-temper aluminium heat diffusers. This construction ensures that when chipboard, OSB or other flooring is fixed across the top that it is in direct contact with the Foilboard diffusers; improving efficiency of heat delivery.

The pipe runs are rapidly pressed into the channels in the Foilboard panels at 200 mm centres. Timoleon’s technical department provided layout drawings to enable the creation a total of nine separate heating zones across the four bedroom house, fed from one of the manufacturer’s A class Axios manifolds located in the property’s own plant room. The system was designed to perform with flow and return temperatures of 55º and 45º degrees Centigrade.www.timoleon.co.uk

period buildings we are committed to ensuring clear and easy access for all pupils, staff and visitors,” explains Paul Barnes, Project Manager at Rugby. “Installing automatic entrances wherever possible is an essential to improving accessibility.” Designed to operate continuously with minimum maintenance, iMotion operators feature a range of internal self-monitoring functions which not only check the sensors every single cycle but also automatically adapt door operation to take account of external factors such as high winds or a build-up of dirt, which may otherwise impede smooth operation. The motors themselves feature none of the parts that usually need regular replacement such as gears and brushes, significantly cutting out down time for maintenance. www.tormax.co.uk

For residential or commercial properties requiring a high specification, stand alone shadow card proximity access control system, Videx Security now offers S-Prox. Designed for up to two entrances, it can be used where residents or staff need access to a property through a single door or through front and back doors. The entrance mode can be set as required. The S-Prox is ideally suited for smaller applications where there are around 100 users, although it can cater for up to 4000. A major advantage is the use of shadow cards for easy management of the S-Prox system. This method, which is used to manage the issue of card readers to staff or residents, uses a copy of each user's card which is retained by management. A user's own card can then be easily disabled or invalidated as necessary without the original card. www.videx-security.com

A historic arcade in Leicester which is one of the only examples of its kind in the UK has reopened following a £3m refit involving multiple glazing installations by GLASSOLUTIONS.The Grade II listed Silver Arcade, which features 20 units, was built in 1891 and is believed to be one of only two four-storey arcades in the UK. Despite being an iconic Leicester building, it has been closed for more than 10 years and consequently fell into disrepair before a redevelopment project started in 2009.GLASSOLUTIONS’ Contracting and Commercial Glazing teams collaborated to deliver a huge array of glazing for the award-winning project, including a full length patent glazed rooflight, fire-rated doors, screens and shop fronts. The brief also included full-height structurally bolted entrance screens, automatic glazed door sets, balustrades and stunning glazed folding sliding doors featuring within shop fronts.Shaun Chawla, owner and company director of Silver Arcade developer Lukegate Limited said: “We are extremely pleased with the result of the Silver Arcade project. It’s a beautifully restored Grade II listed building that will enhance the character and appearance of Leicester’s Market Place and High Street Conservation Areas, as well as preserving, and in many ways enhancing, the architectural and historic importance of Silver Arcade. GLASSOLUTIONS played a key role in the successful project delivery, with the numerous glazing elements being crucial in achieving the desired aesthetics, safety and security. The refurbishment has given the building a new lease of life and guarantees its future for decades to come as a well-loved piece of Leicester's City Centre and historic identity.”

Hot on the heels of winning in the ProCon Leicestershire Awards, Silver Arcade has now picked up a Forum for the Built Environment (FBE) award and it has attracted praise from across the region’s property and development sector. This includes Stuart Bailey, chairman of Leicester Civic Society, who described Silver Arcade as “a very fine, very clever building” and “significant nationally.” With a choice of vacant units still available, Silver Arcade is currently being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton with full details of availability on their website. www.glassolutions.co.uk

Schueco UK has just launched AWS 114, a façade insert window that can be fitted into all types of Schueco façades including stick, unitised and add-on constructions. Its design benefits include large vent sizes, high levels of thermal insulation and the option of ‘TipTronic’ automatic actuator operation. The AWS 114 window is available in three formats – fully framed, structurally glazed and structurally glazed with a glass retention frame. All can be specified with standard insulation or super insulation (.SI).Typical Uf values range from 1.8 Wm2K (AWS 114, AWS 114 SG) to 1.3 Wm2K (AWS 114.SI), with sound insulation up to 47 dB Rw using double-glazed units. The vent can accommodate double- and triple-glazed units from 28 mm to 52 mm.Two opening types are available: projected top-hung and parallel opening. Both use new hinges that are unique to Schueco and both can be operated by hand or by ‘TipTronic’ motor drives. In order not to compromise the clean lines of the façade, the latter are completely concealed within the frames. The largest vent size for top-hung manual vents is 2.2 m x 1.4 m or 1.5 m x 2 m; for parallel vents it is 1.2 m x 2 m. ‘TipTronic’ operation increases the maximum top-hung dimensions to 2.7 m x 2.5 m or 1.5 m x 3.6 m, while parallel vents can measure 2.2 m x 2.5 m or 1.3 m x 3.6 m. Maximum vent weights for ‘TipTronic’ automated systems vary from 250 kg (top-hung) to 200 kg (parallel opening); with manually operated versions, the figures are 160 kg and 100 kg respectively. Finally, security is assured by means of Schueco’s multipoint locking system which can deliver security up to EN 1627 RC2.www.schueco.co.uk

To achieve an uninterrupted timber face, SIMONSWERK TECTUS concealed hinges were specified for internal doors as well as the front door from the lift lobby into the apartments. Finishes included polished stainless steel, antique bronze and stainless steel effect. TECTUS hinges were initially specified for the lift lobby entrance doors and some interior cupboard doors and as work progressed they were also selected for additional doors as Architectural Ironmonger Interior Hardware explains “These are extremely high specification apartments and the designers were very clear that the fittings and finishes should be of the highest order. The large American Walnut doors required a heavy duty hinge which was also concealed so the TECTUS 528 was the obvious choice. They liked the product and the technical back-up provided and expanded the specification to include the majority of the en-suite bathrooms and dressing room doors.” The doors were supplied pre-mortised and the hinges fitted on site by joinery contractor Houston Cox. The entrance doors use TECTUS 528-3D 1 hour fire hinges in polished stainless steel while the internal doors have TECTUS 540-A8 units in bronze metallic antique finish and stainless steel effect. As the name would suggest, NEACO’s Clearview glass Juliet balconies are renowned for providing an unobstructed outlook, but an office conversion project at Stirling House in Northampton required the opposite effect with a bespoke specification incorporating an orange privacy film on the toughened glass panels. The design by GSSArchitecture brings eye-catching colour to Clearview’s minimalist aesthetic, producing an attractive contemporary façade for the three-storey former offices at Cliftonville Road, which have been transformed into a new 14,000 sq ft annex to Abington Vale Primary School. Northamptonshire County Council bought Stirling House for £1.6m last year to address a shortage of primary pupil places and the completed conversion accepted its first intake of pupils in September.

Ben Asbury of GSSArchitecture said: “We chose NEACO’s Juliet balconies largely due to their elegant, clean and contemporary finish with a high level of transparency. The bespoke fixings required for our installation have worked very neatly and we are pleased with the results.”

NEACO’s national sales manager, Richard Richardson-Derry, said: “Our Clearview Juliet balconies have become a very popular alternative to heavily railed Juliet balconies and one of their best attributes is their ability to allow maximum sunlight penetration. Some projects feature the addition of bespoke etching or film on our glass panels and the Stirling House conversion is an unusual example of this as the film covers the whole panel. This particular film still allows excellent sunlight penetration.” All NEACO products come with a class-leading Lifetime Guarantee – further information is available at www.neaco.co.uk

The BFRC Rating method includes all of the relevant factors that contribute to the energy efficiency of a window system, including ‘loss factors’, such as U-value, as well as gain factors, such as solar heat gain.“The introduction of the BFRC A+ rating band allows architects, specifiers and fabricators to clearly select the most suitable window system for a development. This is particularly important today when developers of new and refurbished buildings are looking to achieve the best possible energy efficiency,” added John McComb. A thermally improved three-chamber system, Reynaers CS 77 HI utilises industry leading technology along with multiple chambers in order to achieve its high insulation levels. LCD prIvaCy GLassAs UK interior designers continue to embrace the use of glass as an interior feature, ESG are predicting a rise in demand from residential customers for its ESG Switchable Glass range. Switchable glass is seen as perfect room divider where design requires a feel increased light and feel of space when privacy is not required. Another feature of ESG Switchable is its ability to be used in wet areas more and more people are seeing this as a perfect material for modern bespoke bathroom installations.

As the market sees a rise in the number of bespoke shower fittings, ESG has seen the rise in the number of ESG Switchable panels being ordered to create exterior shower panels. When switched on, the panels give the feel of a standard clear glass, when switched off the panels turn opaque allowing the user complete privacy when showering. ESG Switchable panels can also be made with coloured glass panels allows them to perfectly blend with any bathroom colour scheme.

Where space allows, the panels can also be used as a rear projection screen. Installing a projector on the rear side of the glass means that TV and film can be safely viewed in your bathroom without the need to install costly AV equipment in the wet environment. An increasing number of en suites are now being designed with the dividing wall being ESG Switchable and a projector mounted in the bedroom, giving a large sized viewing screen across the bathroom wall, with no evidence of it being there if the glass is switched to clear.

All ESG Switchable glass is made to order allowing for any bespoke shape and size and comes with a five year manufactures warranty. All panels are made in our Essex based production facilities and are delivered by our own fleet of vehicles. Ensuring your glass is treated with the upmost care from production line to delivery.

The Crittall Prize - Judges Praise Entries As Winner Is Announced

The Crittall Prize, First Place; Northwest Peach Farm, a stunning upscale modern family home in New York State. Architects Bates + Masi Architects. Photography Michael Moran.

Northwest Peach Farm, a stunning ‘upscale’ modern family home in New York State, designed by Architects Bates + Masi Architects, has been announced winner of The Crittall Prize 2013.

Held first the first time this year The Crittall Prize aims to recognize the best application of Crittall steel fenestration in North America, a market where the British based company, with a history of over 160 years, is a dominant player.

The Judging Panel * which met in London to review all 36 entries, were united in their praise for the standard of the entries, which ranged from high end private residences across the USA to refurbishment projects involving schools, commercial premises and hotels.

The Winning Entry took the top slot because, to quote one judge “The scale of the composition and its uplighting sense of architectural elegance combined with well-judged and balanced applications of windows to the facade”.

Said the architects in the winning submission “This residence is primarily used when the clients’ extended family comes from England for long visits. The clients wanted this to be a gathering place for their family, full of memories for generations to come. Thus the materials were chosen not only for durability but also for their gradual changes over many years. The copper siding and roofing will slowly turn green as the weathering limestone becomes darker. However, the window system from Crittall will stand the test of time unchanged.

The British company Crittall has manufactured the same style of industrial steel windows for over 160 years and many early examples are still intact. A geothermal heating and cooling system, green roofs, organic finishes and Crittall Corporate 2000 double glazed windows will minimize the structure’s environmental impact over the generations”.

As winner of the first prize Bates + Masi receive a trip to the UK, visiting Crittall Windows’ headquarters, as well as a unique inscribed Dartington crystal bowl for display in their offices. >>>

>>>>The two runners up in the competition, which were highly commended by the judging panel were: Private Residence in St. John’s Dallas, Texas (Architect: Larry E. Boerder Architects, Texas) and The Hudson River House, New York (Architect: 1100 Architect PC, New York).

St John’s ResidenceNeeding a window product that met the needs of the particular rear yard curved turret feature, the architect relied on Crittall Corporate W20 window profiles to meet these requirements. A very crucial need for a radiused unit, curved glazing and intimate, thin lined profiles, perfectly fit into the Louis IVX inspired French limestone chateau.

Tall, large paned curved glass lites, set within the backyard facing the breakfast area allows the homeowner to experience the wonderful gardens and morning sun just inside – separated only by the graceful, curved glass window units that Crittall seamlessly achieved. The judges thought this project a ‘highly technical design’ which ‘looked like it had been there forever’

Runner up: The Hudson River House, New York . Architect: 1100 Architect PC, New York.

The Hudson River House This three-story, 7,400-square-foot single family home is situated on a sloping site in the Hudson River Valley. The design of this modern home was guided by its immediate surroundings – both the vistas provided by its perch above the Hudson River and the geological strata of the land.

The shifting volumes created by this concept allow for terraced areas that present stunning views of the river and the heavily forested land surrounding the property. An open plan interior is reminiscent of a loft setting, which was driven by the clients’ desire for informality.

The slender Profile of the Crittall Corporate 2000 windows in conjunction with a double-height living space enhance the feeling of openness and connection to the landscape and allow natural airflow through the house. The rhythm of the exterior is expressed on the interior through the modular patterns in the built-in cabinetry, the shifting planes of the fireplaces, and the vertical striations in the wood floors and staircase.

The house is designed to flexibly respond to shifts in climate over the course of the four seasons – it opens up to catch natural breezes in the summer, and is closed and warm in the winter.

The judges were full of praise for this “beautiful house ‘which showed a ‘very smart use of the Crittall window system”.

John Pyatt , Managing Director of Crittall says that the success of the competition means that it will become a permanent fixture in the company’s calendar .

“We were delighted with the number and quality of the entries in this the first year of The Crittall Prize . We are currently finalizing plans for the 2014 event and will be announcing our detailed plans in the New Year. Submission dates will be 1st April to 30th August 2014 and the judging will take place in September/ October 2014”. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

Bonded Corners Give Panoramic View

This project in rural Cambridge is a beautiful example of how UV bonded corners can be used to great effect. It incorporates a 5 sided double-glazed screen with a set of Shuco sliding doors and 4 UV bonded corners, ensuring that the view through the glass is second to none

This job was tricky to fit, with the largest UV bonded panel weighing in at 250kg, and no possibility of using a crane - but with some careful organisation and team cooperation it was managed without any breakages!

The extension is to the rear of the property, and will provide an uninterrupted, panoramic view across the fields, thanks to the innovative UV bonding technique used to seal the interlocking corners.

The join is made without any frame or silicone, and is almost invisible when viewed from the inside. This unique touch creates a striking and technically beguiling façade, as well as maximising the view from inside.Images by George Sharman Photography www.cantifix.co.uk

FIRE PROTECTION/EBPR 61

teN year smOKe aLarms FOr saFer HOmesNew research released by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service reveals that fire-fighters attended more than 100 house fires in the last 3 years where smoke alarms were fitted but not working - because the battery was missing or flat or the alarm was faulty or had been removed. To help counter these issues, the fire service now fits Kidde’s TEN-4 smoke alarms with a 10-year life, guaranteed for both alarm and sealed-in battery, and a separate base plate with tamper-proof locking option.

When selecting TEN-4, the fire service’s Regulation & Compliance Officer worked with the Community Safety team to: “evaluate and procure a product that met legislative requirements and proved value for money, taking many factors into account”. TEN-4 is a self-contained, state-of-the-art Optical smoke alarm developed for social housing and Community Fire Safety programmes. It takes up around a third less valuable vehicle storage space and has far less visual impact, with just a 4” diameter.

Its single, distinctive, large central Test and Hush button is easy to operate, especially by the elderly or infirm. It also has a “reduced sound” feature protecting occupants from the full 85dB when testing the alarm. The research also showed that two thirds of people in the county haven’t tested their smoke alarms in months, with only one in 10 saying they follow national guidance to test their smoke alarms weekly.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service’s findings came as it launched a major ‘Press the Button’ campaign to get people to test their alarms, with a free service set up to remind residents by email, tweet or - for the first time - by text. The research was based on a poll conducted by Ipsos Mori in July 2013, with a representative sample of 256 South Yorkshire adults surveyed. 95% of respondents said that they have at least one smoke alarm fitted in their home; 11% said they tested their smoke alarms weekly; but 62% said they tested their alarm longer than a month ago, with some saying it was longer than 3 months to a year ago - or even more. More information on TEN-4 is available via http://ten4.kiddefyrnetics.co.uk and an updated model will be launched late in 2013.

The exception is Schueco UK whose suite of fire-rated aluminium systems can satisfy even the most demanding requirements. All but indistinguishable in appearance from standard products, Schueco fire-protection systems have been independently tested to EN 1364/1634, meeting all the necessary criteria for Integrity (E) – the prevention of the spread of flame – and Integrity/Insulation (EI) – the prevention of the spread of flame and the provision of a barrier to heat. The Schueco fire protection range includes single and double Schueco ADS 80 FR doors which can be specified with either a 30-minute integrity or 30/60 minute integrity/insulation rating and, like every system in the range, they meet the performance classification of EN 13501. RDC, a world leader as an IT hardware disposal and computer recycling company recently purchased a former Crittall Windows factory in Braintree, opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1990. The building had been left empty for five years and was in a poor state of repair. Due to the nature of RDC’s business, it was essential for the building to be completely water tight. Complete Projects CDM of Sheffield, a family owned and operated specialized construction business, who partner Dallmer Ltd. for installations of their SuperDrain siphonic rainwater drainage, was called in to upgrade the water drainage from the roof coordinated with gutter repairs. A quick but cost effective solution was essential. Over the years there had been several attempts to eradicate leaks caused by gutters over flowing.

These were due to drains wrongly located or added as ad hoc overflows instead of being integrated in the various siphonic systems. Pipework, originally installed with inadequate support was sagging in many places and had also been damaged by forklift truck misuse. Multiple leaks from around drains and from gutter joints were also revealed. Complete Projects made a detailed survey and a recalculation of the flows in the different siphonic systems, using Dallmer’s latest SuperDrain siphonic drainage calculation programme. With this updated plan, fully compliant with BS8490 and meeting the requirements of the Siphonic Roof Drainage Association (SRDA), they then organised the replacement of the outlets in the gutters, synchronized with the gutter repairs, as well as the connection of new outlets to the revised and refurbished internal pipework.

For this work Complete Projects eventually used a total of fifty-four Dallmer D62 PVC flange siphonic roof drains, each one placed to match the re-calculated siphonic roof drainage system, properly fixed in the gutter and bonded to the lining. Dallmer drains carry a 10 year warranty. Rehanging the entire existing internal pipework with SRDA and BS8490 approved components will eradicate additional problems caused by sagging pipe sections. The result was a refurbished system, which avoided the replacement of the internal pipework, a far longer and more expensive option. The client company RDC were able to hold the opening ceremony in June this year, knowing that they had a watertight roof over their heads, thanks to the skilful work carried out by Complete Projects and the high quality of the Dallmer roof drains. www.dallmer.com

COXDOme sHeDs New LIGHt ON wayLaNDs aCaDemyThe re-roofing of an education building dating from the 1950s has included the installation of nearly 70 Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights in different sizes, improving both the appearance and the thermal performance of the building while offering optimum natural daylighting to areas such as corridors and kitchens as well as classrooms. The work at the Waylands Academy in Norfolk was carried out by Faber Roofing, a specialist in the refurbishment of both flat and pitched roof structures. The Coxdome Rooflights were all delivered to site in March of 2013 and fitted over a period of two weeks as the different deck areas and their openings were addressed. The decision to replace the 60 year old existing rooflights was taken for a number of reasons aside from their actual aged appearance, many of them leaking and offering poor security as well as little insulation.By contrast, the double-skinned polycarbonate enclosures to the Coxdome Trade Range rooflights offers much improved thermal performance and the avoidance of condensation. In addition, while the 67 contemporary Coxdome units offer good standards or airtightness and weather resistance where the domes seal against their frame, they were specified with either trickle ventilators or manually operated vents, depending on their location. The rooflight dimensions also varied with sizes including 1050 x 1050 mm and 1000 x 2200 mm. A proportion of the new Coxdomes were supplied with kerb adaptors to assist with incorporating them into the high performance built-up felt system. The new Coxdome rooflights with their tough but low weight polycarbonate domes proved easy to handle and straightforward to fit for Faber Roofing’s operatives, while the upstands offer an ideal slope up which to dress the roof-covering. The Coxdome Trade Range comprises an ‘out-of-plane’ universal rooflight system available in a choice of shapes and sizes, as well as double, treble and quadruple skinned options. The CE marked range not only meets Building Regulations, but with the roof membrane dressed up the splayed or vertical sides to the PVC-u upstands, the completed installation offers unrivalled resistance to rain penetration. In the case of the double glazed rooflights specified for the different areas of Waylands Academy their construction provides a U-value of 2.6 W/m2 K and a sound reduction figure of 20 dB. High security fixings are incorporated as standard. www.jet-cox.co.uk

Two new timber buildings at Ockendon Academy have seen use of 53 FAKRO Electro roof windows with blinds. 16 were installed in the 7-classroom English block while 37 were used on the larger ‘Ockendon Studio School’, a self-contained 6th form facility for year 12 and 13 students. Cabinco, which specialises in eco building, and the construction of sustainable school buildings in particular, was main contractor for both projects.

Designs focussed heavily on the provision of large, open plan teaching areas. As a result, it was particularly important to maximise availability of natural light and with both buildings having low pitch roofs the roof windows play a crucial role. Simon Lawrence, Director of Cabinco explained their reasons for using FAKRO windows. “Selection was based on a number of factors in addition to local availability. We had specific technical issues to address including a requirement for wall operated electrical operation throughout. We received the support of FAKRO’s technical team to produce flashing details specific to the roof construction. Based on past dealings, we were already aware that the windows were of a high quality and had confidence that such requirements would be met without difficulty”. www.fakro.co.uk

rIeFa LIGHtweIGHt LIvING rOOFsRiefa boards are a new type of green roof substrate. They are a hi-tech fibre board made from organically grown and sustainable natural resources, including rye flour and tree bark. The manufacturing process is essentially the same as baking: the ingredients are mixed in dough bins and then baked in second- life biscuit ovens.

Riefa boards are primarily used as an insulation board in the manufacture of doors and as a sound insulation in partition walls. The dimensions of the boards in their dry condition are 18mm thick and 2400 x 1200 mm, and they only weigh 1kg. This makes them very easy to transport and distribute across the roof.

The Riefa organic fibre roof-growing medium is made and produced in a demonstrably sustainable way, it is the light, fits neatly into place, its low depth profile doing away with the need for expensive alterations to parapets. Easily installed over tired or redundant roof covers, a simple rubber membrane overlay eliminates the need for expensive removal and removes the need for the disposal of hazardous oil-based systems.

Contractors do not need specialist skills to install the Riefa system. It fits seamlessly onto sloping, pitched or shaped roofs of all kinds. Nutrient rich and superb at retaining water, Riefa boards have been tested to destruction as a growing medium. www.riefagreenroof.co.uk

Shackerley’s ceramic granite ventilated cladding has provided a stunning outer envelope for University Square Stratford, a new £33 million landmark building in the heart of London’s East End. Designed by Make Architects for Birkbeck, University of London and the University of East London (UEL), the new academic and educational hub was delivered in a design and build contract by VolkerFitzpatrick in association with AWW Architects.

The multi-functional building brings together lecture theatres, dance spaces, music rooms, teaching rooms, large presentation rooms and open-plan spaces in one architecturally striking development.

Make’s bold and expressive design comprises clearly defined interlocking blocks which articulate the internal functionality and organisation of space. Single extruded cantilevers on each side and double-height roof structures add to its distinctive angular geometry.

Requiring a premium quality cladding material to give a feeling of permanence and longevity, Make specified Shackerley’s Sureclad® ceramic granite ventilated façade for exterior elevations, selecting contrasting black panels in highly polished and naturally textured finishes.

Shackerley’s patented Sureclad® Access ventilated facade system helped the architects to deliver a practical, energy efficient outer envelope, with effective external thermal and acoustic insulation installed in the cavity behind the facade.

Achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’, the building is a prime example of sustainable building design. Its many environmentally friendly features include photovoltaic panels incorporated into façade elevations, mounted on a Sureclad® carrier support system in planarity with the surrounding ceramic granite.

Make Project Architect James Taylor commented: “The strong ceramic granite exteriors of this new development, which completes the eastern end of the Stratford Cultural Quarter, help to give University Square a calm and confident atmosphere. The building feels like a new landmark, almost civic in scale and character, and the cladding has helped to create this presence in a modern way.”

Lindapter’s High Clamping Force (HCF) Hollo-Bolt was used to connect structural glass fins to the primary steelwork of the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre. The fins in turn support the walls of the glass box structure; one of the centre’s two ‘pods’, covered by an undulating roof supported by 211 steel beams.A range of size M16 and M20 Hollo-Bolts were specified by the Designers & Engineers of the structural glazing, Vitrine Systems, to connect the glass fins to the RHS perimeter ring beams supporting the transparent glass panels that formed the exterior of the ‘pod’ housing the Visitor Centre’s café and shop. The Hollo-Bolt connections comfortably fulfilled all load requirements, which ranged from 20kN to 30kN depending on the connection location. The discreet and easy to install Hollo-Bolt provided the ideal connection method for this project where on-site access limitations posed a potential problem. The closed RHS steel made Hollo-Bolts the preferred connection method as they offered a reliable and high

strength connection with independently approved safe working loads that could be installed using just handtools; a range of benefits that could not be matched by any alternative connection method. The £27 million Stonehenge Visitors Centre development was completed on time and on budget and opened to visitors in December 2013. The completed structure provides a striking gateway to the monument site for the 900,000 people who visit Stonehenge each year. The Hollo-Bolt HCF features a patented High Clamping Force mechanism that produces three times the clamping force when compared to the same sized product without the mechanism. John Lewis at home has 4000m² (43,000ft²) of retail space over two floors whilst the Waitrose supermarket provides another 2500m² (27,000ft²).A 340 space car park is available to customers at front of the complex. The asphalted area and paved pedestrian routs are drained by over 383 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PLUS 200 surface water drainage channels having Class D400 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings. A further 43 metres of FASERFIX® KS 150 channels supplied with Class E600 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings were also installed in the service areas. The channels were ordered through Collier and Catchpole, the leading builders’ merchants in Colchester. The drainage contractor was Mullen and Kelly. The RECYFIX® PLUS channels are made from 100% recycled polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP) and are factory fitted with their ductile iron gratings. Each one metre length weighs less than 14 kg, so was easily handled into position. The heavier one metre FASERFIX® KS channels are made from the company’s tough fibre reinforced concrete. To facilitate with site lifting, the half metre gratings are fitted after the channel has been placed in its foundation. Even before the final surface had been laid and despite being trafficked by site vehicles, there were no reported channel breakages during installation of either type of channel. To further reduce installation times, end-of-run caps and pipe connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the sides and bottom of each channel. This was a major advantage for the contractor as it helped speed the completion of the project. www.hauraton.co.uk

A Warm And Airtight Welcome At The New “Rabothytta” Cabin For Trekkers To Norway’s Glacial NorthThe breathtaking beauty of Norway’s far north now has a first-rate new facility to welcome adventurers to the magnificent Okstind glacier. Commissioned by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) and designed by Jarmund/Vigsnæs Architects (www.jva.no), the remote ‘Rabothytta’ cabin has been built to precise specifications to withstand the harsh extremes of weather in the region. Designed to echo the natural forms of its landscape, it is part of a network of self-contained cabins and can accommodate groups of up to thirty people on a self-catering basis.

Serving as a ‘base camp’ for high-mountain expeditions, the structure demanded robust solutions to protect against fierce winds, rain, snow and ice and to optimise thermal performance and interior comfort. Two different types of DuPont™ Tyvek® advanced breather membranes have been used in the construction to ensure a wind-tight envelope that is protected against moisture while allowing vapour to diffuse. >>>

>>>The elegant yet rugged architecture of the cabin consists of a timber frame and asphalt board structure with concrete foundations and a façade of 32mm local spruce blanks in a natural finish. Spruce also clads the interior walls and forms the cabin floor, while DuPont™ Tyvek® Soft seals the interstitial envelope, protecting the hut both during and after the construction process. The large ‘viewing’ windows are made from two layers of glass with a further layer of 13mm toughened glass to the exterior, supplied by local manufacturer Trenor AS.

The pitched roof structure features Kerto timber rafters with insulation, wrapped in DuPont™ Tyvek® Supro Grid as an airtight wind and moisture barrier – a crucial element to guard the build until completion and to enhance interior comfort once occupied. Further protection is provided by Isola Isokraft, an extremely tough asphalt membrane covered with a finish of Kebony timber planks. Situated at 66 degrees north, 1200 metres above sea level and 60km south of the Arctic Circle, the cabin benefits from all the natural beauty of its surroundings yet is sheltered from its exposed location by the best that modern building technology can offer. Designed for maximum efficiency, its energy is supplied via a wood-burning heating system with electricity from a combination of solar panels, a battery bank and mains supply where necessary. Wind turbines will come online once budget allows.

Svein Arne Brygfeld of the Norwegian Trekking Association (www.turistforeningen.no) says, “Robothytta is the missing link in a chain of trails and huts in this important area for outdoor, scientific and educational expeditions. It offers both a goal and a starting point for incredible experiences in these mountains. Only an organisation such as ours would be permitted to build in such an extraordinary location – and out of respect for the opportunity we chose one of the leading architectural practices in Norway, Jarmund/Vigsnæs Architects, to realise our very specific requirements.”

In terms of the striking pitched and angular design of the hut, Svein comments, “The structure was conceived both to withstand the elements and to dynamically interact with its environment. It is designed to resemble a large and ancient rock within the landscape, at ease with and yet involved with its surroundings. Wind will work heavily on the structure and during the winter much snow will move around the cabin. We wanted to create an exterior form that could resist a heavy build-up of snow and at the same time, we wanted visitors to fully experience the magical scenery from the comfort of the interior.”

Svein explains that, based on a limited footprint, the functional design of the cabin is necessarily compact, but with very thick insulation on all sides. The construction enables scalable use of energy so that a smaller group can heat only a limited part of the cabin – crucial when consumables such as cooking gas and wood etc., have to be helicoptered in! The structure’s ability to cope with wind pressure is critical due to its proximity to a large glacier on one side and steep mountains on the other, with wind speeds of more than 200 km per hour not unusual.

“The membranes,” Svein says, “play a vital role in managing these conditions, so DuPont™ Tyvek® was fundamental to the design. Furthermore, when the hut is not in use the interior temperature may be lower than the exterior, thus moisture protection is even more important than in a climate regulated building.”

“Rabothytta” will be opened officially in August 2014, but Svein reports that interest is already extremely encouraging, both in Norway and abroad, and he believes that the new shelter will be among the most popular in country.

Kronodesign’s New Press Process Puts A Gloss On Surface ShineKronodesign’s new Mirror Gloss range is the result of one of Kronospan’s biggest investments in product research and development. Mirror Gloss required the construction of an entirely new multi-daylight press, a tailored resin formula, and the development of a new process of timings, pressure, heat and cooling to create a remarkable mirror finish.

As well as Kronospan’s investment in research and development, the Kronodesign team was able to use its endless global journey - gathering trend intelligence and future market knowledge - to inform the creation of 20 Mirror Gloss decors. The palette includes 14 uni-colours, four wood finishes and two abstract designs for an on-trend interior and furniture collection of surfaces.

Paul Duddle, global ambassador for Kronodesign, says: “By specifying Mirror Gloss, designers can achieve bold and intense statements. Our Mirror Gloss range pushes the limits of conventional melamine surfaces to provide an incredible depth of finish. The decors are tirelessly researched and developed - with commercial sense - to help designers add an entirely new dimension and reflection to an interior scheme or furniture piece.”

Mirror Gloss is currently being specified across many high-end home, office and leisure projects that demand a startling lustre finish, but the product is not exclusive to the luxury market.

The new collection offers high-end lustre finishes from contemporary white, black and greys through to playful uni-colours and rich dark wood surfaces. The varied palette gives designers a crisp Snow White (8685) and Black (0190); on-trend greys like Cool Grey (0191) and Slate Grey (0171); the richly vivid Marmara Blue (5515) and Lime Grass (5519); and the warmth and timelessness of wood grain with a Dark Sevilla Olive (8601) and Dark Lyon Walnut (8754).

Mirror Gloss is available on low emission particleboard (PB) - size 2800mm x 2050mm in 18mm - with colour matching ABS edging and HPL.

The Heat Is On at Market Harborough

Originally opened in 1983 and nestled in the historic Leicestershire town of Market Harborough the Symington Building houses the local library, town museum and Harborough District Council offices. After careful consideration the building underwent a £5.7 million complete refurbishment to revitalise the council offices creating a more modern work environment and to improve the library and museum services. This upgrade included relocating and extending the building as well as replacing the entire heating system. Due to the building being completely open to the public the first and foremost consideration of Derry Building Services Ltd was the need for safe heating. “We needed to find radiators that ensured any employees with disabilities or members of the public that were visiting the library or museum would not accidentally come into contact with a hot surface, which could be the case with traditional steel panel radiators” commented Jason Turner, Mechanical Design Engineer, Derry Building Services.

Additionally due to the intended ‘industrial’ look of the space all surfaces were going to be exposed and on view therefore meaning placement of the radiators was very important. It was finally decided that to keep the design balance throughout the offices a radiator was to be installed beneath each window requiring the radiators not only to be safe but within specified sizes that would still achieve the right output. However with the original single glazing of the building being retained this meant that the required heat output was very high. “The office space has multiple windows which is a great source of natural light but results in heat loss through the glass. We needed a heating system that would compensate for this heat loss by providing a high output but could still fit perfectly within the space beneath the windows,” explained Jason. “Additionally all of these requirements still needed to fit within a specific budget.” Derry Building Services has previously worked on several successful projects with Jaga and knew that they offer high-efficiency Low Surface Temperature (LST) heating solutions with powerful outputs in compact sizes. The Jaga Cocoon LST radiator ticked all the boxes and Derry had over 200 installed throughout the library, museum and council offices. “As this was an older building the heat losses can be quite high so it was crucial that the system was able to combat this and still be as energy-efficient as possible,” said Jason. With only one tenth of the weight and water content of a traditional steel panel radiator the Cocoon LST’s powerful Low-H2O element offers rapid yet regulated heating at a reaction time that is three times faster than the performance of an ordinary radiator. “The Jaga Cocoon was one of the few LST radiators on the market that met all of these requirements.”It was also important for the radiator to be aesthetically pleasing and clean-cut in design. “While we are not architects or interior designers we like to achieve high quality good looking results” said Jason Turner. “The Cocoon’s slim-line design means it is sophisticated and unobtrusive in all spaces which is important when such a large number are installed.”Finally the Cocoon LST casing goes all the way to the floor ensuring all the pipework is enclosed reducing the risk of burns and providing that neat and finished appearance.

Wadham College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, has recently undergone major renovation in order to bring its new student graduate centre in line with the college’s existing architecture and to replace its failing terrace roof, which had reached the end of its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the centre’s failing roof but to transform its windswept passageway into a vibrant and aesthetically pleasing recreational space for students to socialize on and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. Given these requirements, the Bauder Bakor Hot Melt System with Intensive Green Roof Landscaping was a natural choice. This structural waterproofing system provides a monolithic, fully bonded membrane that is robust, flexible and self-healing to minor punctures, with a life expectancy in line with that of the building. The accompanying garden landscaping allows the client to have a totally bespoke design with complete choice over the planting and layout scheme. Approved contractor Deane Roofing & Cladding overlaid the existing concrete roof deck with 400m² of Bauder’s Hot Melt waterproofing before installing the striking soft landscaping components.

Tim Lee of Lee Fitzgerald Architects explained why he chose Bauder for this significant project, “The Bauder Hot Melt System with Intensive Green Roof Landscaping offers incredible durability, versatility and cost effectiveness. The roof garden has transformed the graduate centre at Wadham and undeniably assisted in maximising the building’s potential. Bauder provided the highest standards of technical support throughout the works and delivered a single point of contact roofing solution that met our exact specifications under one all-encompassing guarantee.”This Grade II listed building is an exceptional example of how modern architecture and roof landscaping can revive a historical monument, which is expertly and intricately intertwined with over 400 years of history. The communal garden was officially opened by alumna and benefactor Heather Stevens in June 2012, on time and on budget.

With the largest of its six outlets measuring 4,700ft2, the decision by independent electrical goods retailer HBH Woolacotts to create a new 18,000ft2 store was a big step in the company’s expansion.

And Managing Director Martin Hemmerle, son of the family firm’s founder, had a clear idea of what he wanted to create at the St Austell flagship. He commented: “We wanted the retail environment to look different to the normal superstore. In some stores it’s just about how many boxes you can fit in, but that’s not retailing, it’s about making it an experience.”

Helen Morse, senior designer at design, shopfitting and management consultancy AM System Ltd, was responsible for bringing the vision to life for the St Austell store. She used international vinyl flooring specialist Gerflor’s Creation Luxury Vinyl Tile & Plank (LVT) range with its 89 realistic wood and mineral finishes to define spaces, without obvious walkways, which would showcase the goods in similar settings to customers’ homes and create a cafe and cookery demonstration area.

Wood-effect Creation Moon Island planks were used to create lounges and apartment floors, while Creation Marble Modena was used for white goods on the ground floor. The darker Creation East Side mineral tiles and wood effect Buxton oak planks were also specified for audio-visual spaces and office environments. The work was carried out by Bodmin Flooring Centre.

Helen Morse said: “We wanted to pull out all the stops and do something more adventurous. The vision was to create an apartment on a mezzanine floor to encourage visitors, as it’s hard to get people upstairs. It looks fantastic and when you get up there there’s also a cook shop, a cafe area with space for cookery demonstrations, and eco appliances.”

She added: “Because it’s a big space, it could take a strong finish so we kept it pale, with whites and greys, and got the flooring to work a little harder. I liked the Creation colour palette; the timbers look authentic, and Moon Island is very popular at the moment.”

Usually specified for public and commercial areas needing a sophisticated look while coping with high footfall, Gerflor launched its new range of Creation Luxury Vinyl Tiles and Planks after listening to customers’ ideas and demands. The range has many products with bevelled edges for added realism and includes seven unique design concepts and three striking modern themes.

With a wear layer of 0.7mm and an overall thickness of 2.5mm for added durability, Creation’s good looks are underpinned by an abrasion group T rating. The application of Gerflor’s unique PUR+ surface treatment as standard allows for easy cleaning and improved resistance to scratching. It significantly delays the need for wax and provides excellent resistance to chemicals.

The end result is that 18 months after opening the St Austell superstore, Martin Hemmerle is delighted with how the flooring and store looks. He said: “We have had a fantastic reaction from our customers. It’s the largest electrical retail store in Cornwall and it’s quite different. The suppliers are absolutely delighted as well and we’ve had a lot of visits from national dealers to see what we’ve done.” www.gerflor.co.uk

A decade of meticulous planning has gone into the massive regeneration programme in the King’s Cross area of London. Fifty new buildings, 2,000 new homes, 20 new streets and 10 new public squares spread across 67 acres and providing living and working space for 45,000 people make up this impressive programme. As part of the first phase of the ambitious regeneration programme nears completion, Hunter Douglas has taken centre stage in providing eye-catching and innovative shutter systems for the ArtHouse apartment complex. The 143 intelligently planned apartments look out over Regent’s Canal and Handyside

Park and the stunning building has benefited from the sliding louvered shutters provided by Hunter Douglas. The company worked closely with award-winning architects dRMM, the client, Argent Group, Weedon partnership and Kier Construction to complete the largest shutter project Hunter Douglas has completed in the UK.The shutters were installed by Astec projects Ltd. This is a key residential scheme which will define the standard for new homes as part of regeneration project. A spokesman for the

architects explained the building is formed of four residential clusters, creating localised communities and the ability to maximise dual aspect apartments and the system created by Hunter Douglas was key to the success of the design. "Responding to residents’ needs for shade and privacy, the sliding louvred screens animate the face of the building and allow residents the ability to control their environment with shading,” he added.

Hunter Douglas is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of architectural solutions. For the King’s Cross scheme, 435 sliding shutters with manual and motorised systems were installed. The company also supplied soffits with linear ceilings. The project also presented particular design and installation challenges, such as the double height shutters of over 6m for the ArtHouse’s duplex apartments. ++Hunter Douglas Sliding Shutters blend style and functionality – both inside a building and outside. By providing building exteriors with a bespoke look as well as offering optimal solar effectiveness for maximum internal comfort, Sliding Shutters offer a total building solution. For King’s Cross, a system providing a stylish solution for both sun control and privacy was required and Hunter Douglas combined its knowledge and expertise with the client, architects and contractors to create the right solution. Using the Hunter Douglas heat and energy calculation tools, the company designed a shutter with optimal fin spacing to maximise thermal control and privacy without hindering the view from the apartments.Shutters are a mainstay of traditional construction and with the abundance of glass in modern architecture, proper sun protection and a certain amount of privacy are important to create an internal comfort. The Hunter Douglas sliding and custom designed folding shutters provide these elements while creating distinct looks which add to the building’s appearance.www.hunterdouglas.co.uk

Built in 1780, the site was originally used as livery stables housing horses and carriages for hire. Alex Chinneck explains “We built the entire structure off the existing building. This involved the erection of a scaffold bolted to the original facade. Onto this scaffold, we installed a grid using 800 metres of timber, which was then clad in 45 sheets of 18mm Norbord OSB3. On the right side of the façade featuring brickwork we then installed an insulation/cladding system. Sika’s innovative concrete solutions are helping to speed up production and ensure a fast turn around of moulds at the Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering precast plant in Nottinghamshire. The plant produces precast driven concrete piles, where high early strength of the concrete is required to allow early release of the piles from the moulds. This not only speeds up production, but also enables the end user to drive the piles as early as possible. Incorporating Sika® ViscoCrete® Premier®concrete admixture technology in the mix helps not only with early strength development but produces a self compacting concrete (SCC). The use of SCC eliminates the need for vibration by increasing the workability and easing the flow of the concrete around the steel reinforcement. A block of flats owned by Eastlands Homes in east Manchester has been given a green facelift with the installation of a living, ivy wall that runs up the full height of the nine-storey building. The ivy WallPlanters made by green screen company Mobilane will help to insulate the flats at Worsley Court in Rusholme as well as enhancing the look of the block, which was built in the 60s and is in the process of being refurbished by Eastlands Homes.

Importantly, the ‘green wall’ will also help to reduce pollution levels near the flats; Worsley Court is located on Wilmslow Road, a busy bus corridor with high pollutant levels. In total, nine ivy WallPlanters have been installed by Hedera Screens to cover 100 sq m of the building. The plants will remove the same number of pollutant particulates from the air as four to five average-sized trees, but take up a fraction of the space. Despite being 44 meters tall, the WallPlanters will be easy to maintain because of a special root zone in the planters that has been designed to give the plants an ideal environment in which to grow. A sophisticated irrigation system supplies water and nutrients as required.

Julian Hammond, investment manager at Eastlands Homes, said that the ivy clad wall was part of a project to revamp the apartment block, which forms part of a project of three multi-storey blocks owned by Eastlands Homes. He commented: “One of our key priorities in refurbishing this building was to improve the insulation of the flats. The ivy will help to reduce heat loss from the building in winter, while in the summer months it will help to shield the building from the sun’s rays and keep the interior cool. Boosting Worsley Court’s insulation will have the knock-on effect of reducing energy consumption, helping to make the building more environmentally friendly and reduce energy bills for our customers. Cleaner air is a further bonus of the project.”

Julian added that the luscious, green look of the WallPlanters was also a benefit: “We wanted to make an architectural statement. Mobilane’s WallPlanters were a cost-effective and instant way of lifting the aesthetic appeal of the building.”

Sean Farrell of Mobilane added: “Eastlands Homes emphasised the importance of sustainability in the brief for this project; they were looking for a long term solution to the problem of poor insulation which would also enhance the local area. Our extensive experience of working with public sector organisations has enabled us to deliver the right product for the job and provide the residents of Worsley Court with an appealing, environmentally sound way of improving the energy performance of their building.” www.mobilane.co.uk

The World War II Blitz saw the devastating destruction of vast areas of the City of London. Following the war, the local authority urgently needed to provide “general needs” council housing for the multitude of people who served or worked in the City, particularly single people and young couples.

In 1951 a competition was announced inviting architects to design an estate within the 7 acre Golden Lane area of East London. The competition attracted dozens of entrants but was eventually won by Geoffrey Powell. Powell and two of his fellow lecturers in architecture at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University School of Architecture), entered the competition on the understanding that whom so ever won, all three would work together on the project. Three decades later the resulting partnership of Peter (Joe) Chamberlin, Geoffrey Powell and Christoph Bon went on to design the neighbouring Barbican Centre.

In addition to housing, the estate provides social facilities for residents, including a swimming pool, gym, nursery, pub, tennis courts (originally created as a bowling green), together with police and estate offices all combining to create an “urban microcosm” in line with the local authority’s post-war planning and housing commitment to quality design for urban living.

The development of multi-storey buildings provided a combination of studio and one bedroomed flats, 554 in total, set within beautifully landscaped grounds. When completed, the estate became a symbol of post-war recovery, regarded as a model of “social integration” with early tenants including caretakers, clergymen, clerks, doctors, office cleaners, police officers and secretaries. The Estate saw further development during the late 1950’s-early 1960’s and is now home to 1,500 people with approximately half of the properties having been sold on long leases under the “Right to Buy” Scheme launched in 1980; the remainder having been retained by the City of London Corporation for letting at affordable rents.

In the 1990’s the estate received Grade II and Grade II* Listing as buildings of “special architectural interest” in view of its importance as an example of post-war residential

architecture. Listing restricts owner’s freedom to make permanent modifications to individual dwellings, as is the case with the original aluminium windows which, in most instances, do not meet modern standards of thermal and noise insulation. As the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of secondary glazing systems, together with their unparalleled credentials working alongside Heritage bodies within Listed and sensitive buildings, Selectaglaze was the obvious choice to consult to provide a solution to the problems associated with the windows.

Selectaglaze and Diamond Architects worked closely together on meticulous detailing of the secondary glazing. In order to meet the City of London's exacting conservation requirements to obtain Listed Building consent the secondary glazing was designed so that it does not disturb the existing slim window framing and is not externally visible. The maisonette shown here was treated with Selectaglaze’s Series 10 slimline horizontal sliding units in the lounge and bedrooms, including one special unit which was designed to allow the sash to slide into an adjacent pocketed wall, thus remaining concealed when opened.

A Series 90 vertical sliding unit was installed behind the upper sections of a “monumental” floor to ceiling window in such a way that the secondary glazing is demountable to ensure unimpeded maintenance access to the original sliding sash window. The anodised aluminium finish to the secondary units was specified to closely mimic the finish of the original aluminium windows in order to retain the character and internal design of the property.

The property’s owner, Peter Luckham says: “I am very happy with my new secondary glazing units as they have noticeably improved both noise and thermal insulation, while looking contemporary and also operating smoothly. Additionally, the service received from Selectaglaze was professional and gave me complete confidence throughout the design and installation process”.

Founded in 1966, Royal Warrant holder Selectaglaze leads the way with innovative and informative literature – including the company’s comprehensive Product Guide, Energy Conservation Guidance Notes and the recently launched Designer brochure, produced specifically with interior designers in mind. The immediate visual aesthetic of the new £27m, 1515m2 Stonehenge visitor centre stems from its combination of glass and timber facades. At closer quarters, however, the 36 x 78.4 metres canopy and its 211 canted steel supports undoubtedly take the eye. 3600m2 of VMZINC Composite panels in QUARTZ-ZINC® have been used for the underside soffit area, the edge of which has an elaborate pattern of perforations. The multi-layered panels are made up of two 0.5 mm thick zinc sheets bonded either side of a mineral-rich polyethylene core. Though only 4mm thick overall, they offer exceptional smoothness, rigidity and dimensional stability and as a result can be used in lengths of up to 6 metres. Australia’s Denton Corker Marshall won the competition to build the centre twice. Their first scheme was dropped when government budget cuts forced abandonment of a plan to build a tunnel to hide the A303. They responded to the World Heritage Site requirements by designing another building of contemporary style at ‘Airman’s Corner’. A natural palette suited to the rural landscape was a key element of the brief and zinc was chosen for its sustainability, colour retention and self-protecting patina. The building has been designed to sit lightly in the landscape and to be demonstrably reversible. Its position in one of the lowest lying areas and remote location, distant from residential development, minimises any visual intrusion in the landscape. The contemporary steel structure and lightweight framed walls require minimal substructure so that, if removed, residual environmental impact will be minimal. Attention of up to 1,000,000 visitors each year will undoubtedly be drawn to the zinc by the height of the building which, at up to 8 metres is comparable to the tallest trilithon stones. In addition to being visually distinctive, the canopy is considered to be one of the most notable architectural elements of the design. The building has been designed to achieve high sustainability targets so local, recyclable and renewable materials were used wherever possible. A sustainable, fuel-efficient approach to heating and cooling greatly reduces energy use and carbon emissions while VMZINC was able to demonstrate that over 90% of material used in construction projects is already being recycled. Energy consumption in zinc manufacturing is also by far the lowest of any metal façade or roofing system. Not only can it be rolled at a lower temperature, less than half the energy is used in the manufacturing process compared with copper, stainless steel or aluminium. Air emissions are as little as 0.05mg/m3 while analysis of zinc concentrations in the Rhine, which passes through one of Europe’s areas of greatest industrial intensity, confirms that the balance is well within accepted environmental limits. Such was the interest in zinc that the pod beneath the roof which provides ticketing and guide facilities is also clad in it. It provides a notable contrast to the timber and glass without suggesting that the divergent materials clash. With its range of colours now extending to blue, green, red and brown the scope it provides has never been greater. www.vmzinc.co.uk
