THE ESSENCE: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all

progress depends on the unreasonable man.”*

George Bernard Shaw *(And woman. Obviously.)

Our Purpose

We’re creating this shift by working with schools across the UK to place leadership at the heart of our educational system, giving young people the

knowledge, skills and experience to become exceptional young leaders.

The Unreasonables sees a challenging world ahead - one riddled with complex economic, social and cultural problems. And we see a dearth of

effective values-led leaders who are able to navigate those choppy seas.

We envision a world where young people take full ownership and responsibility of their lives and the world around them; where all young men

and women recognise the power they have to create positive change.

WHY?

Our Definition

of Leadership

“At school and university, leadership is about looking at yourself, or at the world around you, and being visionary. It ’s about being dissatisfied with the status quo, imagining something better and rising to the challenge of realising that ideal.”

WHY?

Curiosity (opening ourselves up to the richness and possibilities of this world) Empathy (giving rise to deep-seated respect for our fellow beings)

Our Values

WHY?

Aspiration (freeing ourselves to imagine the greatest things we could achieve)

Responsibility (realising we are able to choose our response to any situation) Freedom (outcasting our greatest enemy: fear) Dogged Determination (allowing us to push on in the face of adversity) Collaboration (recognising that we can’t do it alone) Equilibrium (a conscious balancing of our mental, emotional and physical dimensions of life)

Our Methodology

HOW?

We offer an empowering approach and a clean

slate, allowing students to lead their own learning

We conclude with action-orientated reflection to bring them to the start of new leadership journeys

Our programmes ensure that students learn to

enjoy stepping beyond their comfort zone

We accelerate learning by providing non-judgmental environments in which to

make mistakes

Embracing Uniqueness

Our Beliefs

HOW?

“You cannot place a leadership blueprint on young people and expect it to work. We believe that each leader is truly unique. Importantly, we are also talking about creating an environment which allows and empowers young people to have the experience necessary to develop their own skills and unique style of leadership independently.”

Skills Diversity Micro-Climate

We develop all students with an emphasis on self-discovery - recognising

and understanding one’s own leadership

style

There is no “right way” to practice leadership. We

recognise that leadership manifests in a

plethora of skills, attitudes and situations

We invest in creating a productive environment for learning by designing the perfect space, tools

and materials for our programmes

Student Buy-In

Perfect Climate

Staff Buy-In Parent Buy-In

Touch-Points Group Size Virtual Journey

Buy-in from students is essential for the success of our leadership programmes. We require students to be committed to their learning

journey

The students’ leadership journey may start during our

programmes, but will only continue with the support

of school staff (their greatest cheerleaders)

Ideally, parents would be aware of what our

programmes entail and would be able to support their child’s development

at home

Our workshops are most successful when delivered in small groups of students (15-25), though launch and close events can involve full year groups

We support the journey of our students outside of our module delivery through virtual networks, resource banks and “leadership

parcels”

Our programmes require a minimum of three touch-

points per academic term, in order to ensure

uninterrupted growth and programme continuity
