INTRODUCTION

Qualified elders, properly functioning in every church, is as essential and effective in saving souls as the evangelist who constantly preaches the gospel. Both are needed in every church along with good teachers ( Eph. 4: 11 - 12). Elders in every church is essentially connected to saving souls:

1. Their work involves "watching for souls" ( Heb. 13:17).

2. They speak to Christians the word of God ( Heb. 13: 7).

3. They are, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convince the gainsayers (Titus 1:9).

4. They "warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak," (I Thess. 5:14).

5. They watch for false teachers ( Acts 20: 29 - 31).

6. They are to be busy feeding, tending, ruling and overseeing the flock of God which is among them ( I Pet. 5: 1 - 3; Acts 20:28; I Tim. 5:17).

Elders belong to the organizational structure of a local church, which consists of bishops, deacons, and saints ( Phil. 1:1). The New Testament teaches there are to be a plurality of elders in every church ( Acts 14: 23). Each church is independent of other congregations. The lack of dedicated, qualified elders in local churches poses one of the greatest problems in the church today.

INTRODUCTION

One of the greatest threats to one's eternal welfare is apostasy. The Bible plainly teaches that saints must be continually warned and on guard lest they "depart from the faith" (I Tim. 4:11); make shipwreck of the faith ( I Tim. 1:19); become lukewarm (Rev. 3:16), and die spiritually. The preacher of the gospel must be alert to this danger and constantly warn, rebuke and reprove ( II Tim. 4:2; Col. 2: 3 - 4; 2:8) if he is to be successful in saving himself and his hearers (I Tim. 4:16). God's grace has, through the Holy Spirit, warned of this danger even describing in detail various threats. (Acts 20: 28 - 31; II Tim. 4: 1 - 5; Col. 2:8; II Pet. 2: 1 - 3; I Tim. 4: 1 - 6)
