April Outreach - Family Promise of Carteret County St. Paul’s outreach project for April is Family Promise of Carteret County, which is made up of thirty-four county churches. Its mission is to provide temporary, safe hous-ing for homeless women and children. The program provides job training for the moth-ers, including computer training, resume preparation, job interviewing techniques, and child rearing skills among others. The training and child care for preschool children take place at the Family Promise Day Center on 35th Street in Morehead City. Guests rotate among the fourteen host churches with volunteers providing meals and overnight coverage. Each church hosts for one week once every three months. A support church is paired with each host church. Support churches typically do not have the space to host guests but can help with transportation, setup, food, etc. St. Paul’s helped initiate this program in Carteret County. Here at St. Paul’s we have successfully hosted Family Promise guests quarterly since October 9–15, 2011. Parishioners generously give their time and talent to set up and break down sleeping spaces, prepare and serve food, spend the night, and provide transportation to and from the Morehead City Family Promise Center. There is much work yet to be done as this outreach continues to develop. Vol-unteers are encouraged to contact Laura Mosier at 484-400-6575.

Triduum Observance Consider the artichoke. Steamed to perfection each leaf is a tasty mor-sel as you make your way to the center. If you didn't know any better you might quit before getting to the best part –the artichoke heart. Consider the liturgy. Week in and week out throughout the year the Eucharist feeds our spiritual hunger. At its heart are the liturgies of Holy Week. All together, of a piece, beginning with Palm Sunday, but especially those services known together as the Triduum: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the first Eucharist of Easter. The liturgies of Holy Week are a gift, a privilege and to some a burden ( read “hassle”). They require our extended attention over the course of a week. They ask of us awkward moments of confusion ( the procession with palms, the turning of our hearts to “crucify him!”), embarrass-

ment ( the foot washing, when anxiety gets the better of us and we wonder,”Who will see my crooked toes or notice my flat feet?”) and anxiety ( the veneration of the cross when we squirm and avert our eyes from the very edgy fact of death at its most humiliating), all followed by in-explicable joy on Easter ( pick your own favorite image here….). Who can describe the heart of the artichoke, except to say “Taste and see.”? Consider Holy Week and engage the liturgies of a piece, with your whole heart, body, mind and spirit, as a privilege and a gift.

Five Loaves mission meets every Monday at First Baptist Church. We can use volunteers from 5-7:30pm and servers from 6-6:45pm. It is an ecumenical outreach between St. Paul’s and First Baptist Church’s members serving a hot supper to anyone needing a meal and fellowship. Contact Nancy Ustach, 252-728-6811.

Vestry Highlights St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

March 15, 2017

The Vestry met in monthly session in the Parish Hall. The February 15, 2017 minutes were approved. The Year-End and February Financial Reports were reviewed and approved. In 2016, one hundred and four percent of budgeted income was received through the end of De-cember 31, 2016, and budgeted expenses were at ninety-nine percent. In February, Eighteen percent of budgeted pledges and other income was received through the end of February 28, 2017, and budgeted expenses were at nineteen percent. There was no Senior Warden Report. The Junior Warden, Sandy Brock, reported the following: 1. That the re-plastering project in the church was complete and cost $27,242. Twenty-five thousand dollars was received by a parishioner to offset the total cost. 2. In the Parish Hall, the last two windows have been ordered and will be installed when they arrive. This will complete the project to replace the existing windows with energy effi-cient, double paned windows. Thank you to Leonard Safrit and Safrit Building Supply for working with the manufacturer to discount the windows, greatly reducing the cost of the pro-ject. 3. In the church, the heating and air conditioning ducts were cleaned after the plastering work was completed. 4. The vestry gave Jr. Warden, Sandy Brock permission to work with the Historic Re-view Board to seek permission to repair or replace the Teak doors and to replace the Teak tran-som with glass. John Wood of the North Carolina Historic Preservation Society has researched and will provide a letter stating that a glass transom is permissible from a historic perspective. St. Paul’s transom may very well have had glass at one time although no pictures could be found. Using glass would provide much needed light to the Narthex and make the stained-glass window above the swinging doors into the church more visible. Once the doors are repaired or replaced, a contract will be given to maintain them on an annual or semi-annual basis as recom-mended by the experts who have reviewed the project. A contract will also be given to maintain the Teak doors on the Parish House. In Old Business, the Vestry approved a motion to request the maximum allowable withdrawal from the St. Paul's Endowment Fund to be used for constructing the new office and classroom building and to make the same request for maximum funds in 2018 - 2020, but a vote will be taken annually with a request made for these funds. Following Executive Session, the Vestry acknowledged Father John’s announcement during Executive Session that he desired to retire from full time ministry and as Rector of St. Paul’s Parish on a date agreed to by the Vestry. The Vestry set July 31, 2017 as Father John’s last day in the office and Sunday, July 30 as his last day in the pulpit.

“Am I a Member of ECW?” When I started coming to St. Paul’s fifteen years ago, I began hearing about ECW news and events. But I wasn’t a member. It took me a while to realize that I didn’t have to join ECW. Every woman at St. Paul’s, old and young, is a member of Episcopal Church Women. We share in worship and service, and find purpose and friendship in our work together. Get involved when the time is right, and drop back when it isn’t. Just know that you are indeed a member of the group! -- Allison DuBuisson, Vice President Lenten Retreat at Trinity Center What a lively and meaningful day we spent with The Rev. Anne Thornberg from Fayetteville. She guided us in looking inward to find God, and in searching outside ourselves for the meaning of our relationship with the world. A few of us even wandered as far as the beach in our search! We made new friends among the attendees from St. Christopher’s in Havelock and St. Andrew’s in Morehead City. Lunch in the big dining hall felt like summer camp. Was that really Bishop Skirving in a sweatshirt? ECW of the Diocese of East Carolina meets May 3 in New Bern The annual spring meeting will be held at Christ Church, New Bern on Wednesday May 3. Registration opens at 9:15. At 10:00, Bishop Skirving will lead a worship service, and then Terry Brubaker will speak on Camp Hope and the Prison Ministry. Lunch will be available for $10. Please let one of us know if you will attend – we need a head count by April 24. Carpooling will be available. Allison DuBuisson ([email protected] Mary Duane Hale ([email protected]) Please continue to keep Patti Dill and her family in your thoughts and prayers

Saturday April 15 we will meet at 10:15 to help with the Easter Egg Hunt. We will help hide eggs and work with the kids to make sure all the eggs are found. After assisting with the egg hunt and clean up, we will walk down to Plaza Mexico for a feast of chips, salsa, tacos, burritos, rice, beans and whatever else you can afford to buy.

Glory Ridge Mission Trip I want to invite the entire parish to participate in the St. Paul’s Youth Mission Trip to Glory Ridge. There are three ways to participate. First, you can help pay for the mission work. This part has been accomplished! Once again, you have overwhelmed us with your support of the youth. We have raised enough money to make the cost of the mission trip attainable for our youth. We have raised enough money to cover the cost of the materials we will use in our mission work. We could not have done this without the help of Jersey Mike’s and volunteers from the parish who made cookies, marinated onions, sliced tomatoes and donated condiments. Thank you! Second, you can pray for the mission trip. Start praying now that the youth and adults in the church will respond to the call to come to Glory Ridge this year. Third, you can come with us on the mission trip. Check with Sarah Jo Safrit, George and Lynn Eastman, Anne and Hoke Page who have been to Glory Ridge. Ask them about the impact the trip had on them and consider coming with us this summer. The mission trip is from June 25 to July 1. SHOES FOR GOD’S CHILDREN - “Healing Our World” Making shoes for barefoot children in Africa

The Global Goals committee of the Diocese of East Carolina sponsored a workshop at the diocesan convention to make shoes for orphanages in Africa where children have none. These children are at risk for cuts, bites and parasitic infections like jiggers which can cause permanent damage like paralysis, loss of limbs and even death. Mothers and caregivers in Africa are also being taught to make these shoes for their barefoot children. This skill can be turned into a cottage industry to supplement their income on an ongoing basis and give these women economic empowerment and a pathway out of poverty. For additional information please visit Global Goals committee of the Diocese, www.diocese-eastcarolina.org or for questions email Rosemary Stark, [email protected] or call 252-637-3698.
