In saying that, I want you also to think about persons you have known over the years who have been a great spiritual influence in your life. Think about the special persons you have known over the years who were strongly, wonderfully, and obviously connected to God and the church. My guess is that however many persons may have come into your mind, they all have possessed the same three qualities. They have all been grateful, gracious, giving people. Over my next three Epistle articles, I want us to take a look at these three amazing signs of connectedness to God and see how we are doing. First of all, there is gratitude. You know, I have never known a greedy person who was a happy person. People who always want more and more are always unhappy because nothing they have is ever enough. On the other hand, I have never met a grateful person who was not a happy person. Happiness comes not from getting every single thing you want, but from being grateful for what you have. Early in life our parents and teachers remind us to say “Thank you” and to demonstrate our appreciation, but as time goes by, we forget and we become more sophisticated, more cynical, and more calloused by life. Let me show you what I mean. A few weeks ago, I saw this poster entitled Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions in a Sunday School classroom. Listen to these words: “When I look at a patch of dandelions I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard. My kids see flowers for Mom, and blowing white fluff you can wish on.” “When I hear music I love, I know I can’t carry a tune and don’t have much rhythm, so I sit self-consciously and listen. My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don’t know them, they make up their own.” “When I look at a homeless person and he smiles at me, I see a person who probably wants money from me and I look away. My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.” “When I see a mud puddle, I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets. My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with.” “I wonder if we are given kids to teach...or to learn from? No wonder God loves little children! So, enjoy the little things in life because one day you may look back and realize that they were the big things. I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions.” St. Luke’s family, there is so much in this life to be grateful for. The riches of God’s goodness are all around us, but we have to have the eyes of faith to see them, the ears of faith to hear them, continued on page 8

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Proverbs 4:25

Forward in Faith4th Quarter Newsletter - 2017

“Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who

falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking

ourselves, “How can I help?”Romans 15:2 (The Message)

This past April, Lynne McAlexander, Amber Wofford, Beth Ryan, Carla Taylor, and myself attended the Orange Conference in Atlanta, GA. What attracted us to this particular conference was the theme: For Our Neighbors and the knowledge and resources that we were certain paralleled with Forward in Faith’s goals. A variety of speakers, workshops, resources, and worship experiences - all challenged participants to ask:

What would happen if the neighborhood around your church suddenly decided…• Your church is somewhere they can build solid friendships.• Your church is a safe place for their kids to talk about important stuff.• Your church actually helps when something goes wrong in your community.• Your church can help their family win at being a family.• Your church answers the questions they are really asking.• Your church gives them hope and a reason to believe.

Each of us attended workshops that applied to areas in which we currently serve and/or have a passion. We worshiped together, fellowshipped together, and “unpacked” the conference together to see how we could use the information we received in a tangible way in our ministries at St. Luke’s. Below are some takeaways from our experience – points that stuck with us, ideas that prompted us to take action, and creative ideas that we’d love to implement at St. Luke’s.• We need an overall ability to think about things in a different way. We have to pray hard about programs

that are solely focused on people who are already at St. Luke’s (while very worthy programs), but do not accomplish our calling of reaching our neighbors and sharing the Gospel with our community. These are very hard things to think about and very hard decisions to be made.

• Our new catchphrase as its currently written, #480forMemphis came out of this conference. While we had one in place prior, the conference reminded us that we need to be FOR our neighbors, turning our focus from within our walls and seeking ways to go out in the community.

• Putting young people in leadership roles is essential. Give them “keys” to leadership and help them succeed! Listen to them as we can learn from them.

• Worship needs to be warm and inviting. Less like theatre and more like family. Striving for excellence in worship can be the death grip of warmth. Authenticity is key.

• Have a party! Celebrate our neighbors and have Prodigal Parties - an event where we celebrate a second chance and pour love into those who need it most. Through the power of togetherness, we can celebrate the uncelebrated and throw parties to stir hope in hurting hearts.

• Racial Reconciliation begins with open recognition that something is wrong with the way things are. Open hearts to others acknowledging our sinfulness and prejudice. Be a safe place to disagree.

• Carey Nieuwhof ’s (author of Lasting Impact) session reminded us that it is important to focus on areas in which St. Luke’s excels rather than taking on too much. We serve our community well and there’s potential to make our service ministries even better.

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Proverbs 4:25

Step Out in Faith

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the

Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

fers proactive experiences vs. reactive experiences. Offer them experiences that enrich marriage vs. waiting until it is an “intervention” when one or both couples are “done”. Some fresh ideas for marriage ministry that cater to both partners: drive through Date Nights or have an 80’s, 90’s, 00’s night date night with differ-ent activities for couples to remember the spouse of their youth.

• Procrastinate on Purpose: Many church staff and volunteers have a good potential for burn out. Is there a way for us to take a step back and see how best for people to spend their resources- prayers, presence, gifts, service, witness? Can we formulate core truths that help shape our ministries allowing us to have a more team approach to all we do instead of isolated ministry areas? Focusing on our own soul health will help energize us for the work in the church and community.

• Look out into the community around you and identify those problems that people care about the most. We cannot focus on everything-we are called to specific ministry areas. Do we have ministries currently focused on those problems? Is this ministry bearing fruit? Do we have a vision? Every vision is a solution to a problem: new vision for an old problem/see old problem in a new way.

• We don’t need a new answer, we just need to commit to God’s original answer-Love. Love God. Love People. We have to prove to our neighbors that love works.

• Who feels forgotten in your community? Secondary problems can be resolved by taking on the primary problems. Potential resources- Memphis Christian Pastor’s Network, Healing Wounded History.

• Don’t be so busy doing the work of the church that it kills the work God does in you.• We have to spend some time in serious discernment about what the needs really are around 480 S. High-

land. We cannot take on the problems of the whole city, but we can take on what is happening in our own neighborhoods. One of the potential problems with this is that there are a good many of us that do not live in the neighborhood which leaves us with a disadvantage for getting to the real needs of our neighbors. It is not just the homeless and hungry. There are many other problems within families today that are being overlooked.

• Plan your ministries around the community in which you live. For example, if there’s a large homeless population, tailor ministry activities for all ages to serve those community needs. Not only does it meet the needs of the community but it teaches children, youth, families, adults to look beyond their own lives and help others instilling compassion and grace.

• Most churches either seek a hands-off approach or use a topical approach to marriage ministry. Marriage is not a topic to be covered but a rela-tionship to be discipled. Seek to reach couples in a way that of-

We all learned so much at this conference – more than we can possibly share in this newsletter but that we are implementing in our roles here at St. Luke’s. We continue to pray that God nurtures those seeds that were planted and that what we learned is fruitful in our community.

It is crazy to think that three years ago I walked through the doors of St. Luke’s UMC as the new music director. The time I have spent here in Memphis has been full, with the highest of highs, and also a few lower points. I got to do something here in Memphis that some people might not ever get the opportunity to say. I got to live out my life’s dream. Conducting and leading an orchestra and running a music ministry with really fine musicians, I still think back in amazement. As I am sure the vast majority of you have already heard, I have tendered my resignation as Director of Music Ministries here at St. Luke’s and will be relocating to Pittsburgh, PA after All Saints Sunday, November 5th. In my eighteen years of music ministry I have left three congregations. They have all meant a great deal to me and they all held and hold special places in my heart. But this fourth one is very hard indeed. The people of St. Luke’s… you are something, right from the very start. Before I even moved to Memphis, I was getting cards and messages of welcome. You showed me that though the world is indeed scary outside of my mother’s attic, which was the last place I called home before coming here, there are good peo-ple, there are great people in this world.I don’t regret one minute of music making these past three years. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing me to serve this congregation. I am confident that singing and music making of all kinds will continue on as strong as it has always been here. I am just so honored to have been able to be a small portion of that great tradition. And now to close this, my last Epistle, as I began my first Epistle three years ago…

When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride,it is as though the whole creation cried,Alleluia! How often, making music, we have founda new dimension in the world of sound,as worship moved us to a more profoundAlleluia! And did not Jesus sing a Psalm that nightwhen utmost evil strove against the Light? Then let us sing, for whom he won the fight:Alleluia!Let every instrument be tuned for praise!Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always:Alleluia!

continued from page 1the heart of faith to feel them and the hands of faith to hold them and celebrate them. When I stop and think about it, the great people of faith I have known over the years, the ones who have touched my heart and influenced my life spiritually --- those amazing people --- have all had this special quality. You could tell they were strongly connected to God because they were strongly connected to the spirit of gratitude.Faithfully, Jim
