St. Joseph Community News SEVEN REASONS YOU NEED ADORATION

As we consider Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the magi kneeling next to the manger during this Christmas season, we ought to ask: What were they doing while they knelt there? Certainly, they were admiring the beauty of the infant Jesus, they were pondering the words that had been spoken to them and the signs that had been given them about Who the infant Jesus really was, they were taking in the powerful silence of being in his presence, and they were content simply to be with Jesus there.

In a word, they were praying – more precisely, they were practicing the prayer we call “adoration.” It would be hard to imagine Mary and Joseph, or the shepherds or magi, reciting rote prayers again and again while looking at Jesus in the manger, thinking that was what they had to do to be connected to the Christ-child. That’s not to say memorized prayers are bad – in fact, they certainly have a good and indispensable place. But what God wants from us is not just rote prayers. He wants us to adore him.

And not only does God want adoration, we need it. Here are seven reasons why:

Adoration teaches us who God is. When we enter God’s presence and allow ourselves to be filled with a deep awe at his greatness and love and mercy – at the marvel that he is a Person who wants a relationship with us – we are filled with a deep understanding of who he is which is not given in textbooks and catechisms.

Adoration reminds us who we are. Filled with that awe of God and that deep understanding of his greatness, our own lives and priorities fall into perspective. We become humble in the fullest sense – we grasp the truth about who we are in light of God, and we realize how much we depend on him for everything.

Adoration instills a sense of wonder in us. We have, in many ways, lost the ability in our culture to delight in the joy of possessing something that is good. Our attention flicks from one thing to the next constantly – we are filled with the neurotic need to link high pleasures and feelings one after the next. The result is an inability to wonder and rest in the beauty of our experiences. Adoration teaches us to rejoice in what is good – to rest there.

Adoration builds a sense of the sacred. Seeing the greatness of God, we understand the holy fear and awe with which we should approach him. In a culture that places everything on the same level, we have lost our sense that there is Someone greater than we are. And that leaves us sad – because if nothing is higher than man, we have no hope of ever transcending ourselves, which is something we naturally long for.

Adoration teaches the value of silence. Adoration is a silent action (think “Silent Night”). For real adoration to happen, it demands external silence, at times, and internal silence always. It encourages us to cast out the noise and busyness that mark our lives in order to be able to relish in the silent mystery of God’s presence in the moment.

Adoration transforms our souls. Time in adoration always fills me with the recognition, “I have been with God today.” And that alters everything: my thoughts, attitude, interactions, patience, etc. It fills me with peace and sets my problems in perspective, transforming everyday life.

Adoration teaches me to receive God’s love. Adoration is a two-way street. Not only do we shower God with our awe and reverence, but he responds in turn. Adoration opens our souls to receive God’s love. We learn what that means through adoration and we learn that his love is never something earned but always freely given. How greatly we need to learn that lesson to be fully alive and human!

Only when we imitate the visitors to Jesus’ manger are we freed from the paltry limits of ourselves. Let’s return, then, to that prayer of adoration in our personal prayer time, in Eucharistic adoration, and in the silent moments after receiving Holy Communion. For only in rediscovering that adoration of God do our souls encounter the immense greatness for which they were made.
