Residence at Carleton

With parents of Residence students in mind, the Department of Housing and Con-ferencing Services issues a newsletter through their website at http://carleton.ca/housing/parents/parent-newsletter/. This newsletter delivers up-to-date information about living in Residence, from laundry services to ways students can get involved in the Res community. This is a great compliment to The Enlightened Parent ! Housing also offers a series of parent Guides, which deal specifically with issues that can have a significant impact on a student’s University experience. Some of the topics include: a month-to-month guide for the year, drinking in University, and sexuality in University. These topics address some of the challenges and transitions that students may experience as they enter University, and how parents can be helpful and supportive.

Even though the year’s only just started, Thanksgiving (and midterms!) are just around the corner, and tickets start selling fast for students looking to go home for the holiday weekend. Whether by car, bus, train or air-plane, its important to plan ahead so that there aren’t any unexpected challenges or delays when it comes to your student making it home for the weekend. So don’t leave it until the last minute - book tickets now! Luckily, Carleton has an on-campus travel agency. Aside from many different student volunteer and exchange programs, Travel Cuts guarantees the lowest student prices with their International Student Identity Card (ISIC). This card gives students discounts on air fare and inter-city busses. Students can pur-chase their ISIC in the Travel Cuts office on the third floor of the University Centre. Important: discounts available through ISIC are not applicable to Via Rail transit; Via Rail offers their own student discounted fare for individuals aged 18-25. Just to give a bit of a relative perspective on travel times and expenses, the table below compares modes of transportation and their respective approximate costs for a one-way trip to a very common destination: Toronto. Gas and airfares are subject to the greatest fluctuation, and so it’s that much more important to plan ahead!

If your student is planning on coming home for Thanksgiving...

Car 4-5 hours $60 - $80 (gas)

Greyhound Bus 5-6 hours $48.50

Via Rail 4.5 hours $72.32

WestJet 1 hour $170 - $250

Mode of Transportation Time to Toronto from Ottawa Approximate Cost (one way)

Porter Airlines 1 hour $70 - $130

Planning to stay in Residence for the holiday weekend?

Whether its because of upcoming midterms, or because home is too far away to go for a weekend, many students decide to stay on-campus for the Thanksgiving weekend. This can be a great opportunity for students to catch up on some schoolwork, study for a midterm, and relax while taking a break from the constant activity of life in residence. Not to mention that the Fresh Food Company puts on a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner!

EWB harnesses the problem-solving approach, techni-

cal skills, and creative pragmatism of the Canadian

engineering sector to address the root causes of

poverty in rural Africa. Our volunteers partner with

local entrepreneurs, organizations, and government

ministries in the areas of water and sanitation,

agricultural productivity and market access, and

governance in rural infrastructure.

Here in Canada, we engage Canadians, our government, companies, and univer-sities to build their connections to Africa and make choices that promote and contribute to human development.

Founded in January 2010, the Carleton University Glee Club is a student-run singing group registered with the Carleton University Stu-dents’ Association. Its membership typically ranges from 20 to 30 students. According to co-founder Emile Scheffel, “the idea behind CU Glee is to provide a fun and relaxed venue for young singers at Carleton and to help them further develop their performance skills.” He adds that “the club includes members of all skill and experience levels and students from music to engineering to political science majors like myself.” Their first public performance took place in March, during Carleton’s inaugural Relay for Life event for the Canadian Cancer Society, and more performances are expected to follow.
