A very special thanks to the P & C who kindly donated a Dyson vacuum cleaner to our Support Unit to help clean up from those

thrills and spills!

The Friends of Engadine Public School table warmly received a very special visitor on Saturday, Mrs. Anita (Lovering) Arnold is an EPS alumni, who began as an EPS student in 1940! She recalls her teacher was Mrs. Graham and her Principal was Mr. Calendar. She has fond memories of Engadine Public, and is very impressed with how the school has grown and changed over the years. She was delighted by the gorgeous

weather and outstanding Fete.

Our Family Fun Day—What A Great Day!

Great to see EPS Alumni—Mrs Arnold!

Thank You P & C

Our school hall was transformed into a catwalk as we commenced our celebrations with our first school Fashion Parade. Students from Kindergarten through to year six took turns down the runway showing off fashions from local designers, as well as our own Engadine Public School uniform. Many thanks to everyone who helped put this event together—especially to Jess T who was the inspiration and organiser of the event. The

students had a great time dressing up as supermodels!

Wishing all fathers the most Happy Father’s Day!

SCHOOL NEWS

On Wednesday our Kindergarten students visited Symbio Wildlife Park as part of their Living Things in

Science unit. Everyone had a great day—and they all came back very happy but tired!

On Wednesday out Stage One students visited Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre. As students rotated between activities, they were given the opportunity to create individual artworks using paints and collage techniques, create a sculpture from clay, and participate in a guided tour of the Dream Machines

exhibit. This complimented objectives being studied in class in both science and history this term.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL

DAD’S! WE HOPE YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC DAY!

Engadine Community Markets or ‘ECM’ as we fondly call it, is going from strength to strength. We have had 7 new permanent stall holders join us in the last month, bringing the total to 38 permanent stalls of the 47 we are permitted to have, and stall holders are already booking ahead for Christmas! We have been able to facilitate external group fundraising through use of the BBQ, including Bosco Braves, Engadine High, Yarrawarrah Public School, Heathcote East Public School, and this month Heathcote KU Preschool. I am currently working with Council on planning some themed markets at the end of the year and would love to hear your suggestions, ideas or things that you would like to see at the markets. Simply drop a line to [email protected] titled ‘Market Ideas’. I am extremely grateful l to all those that contribute and facilitate to making our community markets achievable each and every month, from Finance, Logistics, Graphic Design, Advertising, and Facilitating, not to mention those EPS families that run stalls. If you’d like to join or contribute to the market in anyway (big or small), please drop a line to our email address or call on 0435 087 919. Thank you again for showing Engadine what a great school we have!

To commemorate our school’s 85th birthday, Mrs Bourke is proud to announce the publication of the school’s 85th anniversary book ‘Engadine Public School—85 Years On’ - a snapshot of life at EPS in 2017. The vibrant photobook has been compiled from a collection of amazing photographs snapped during the last 2 terms to document this special year in the school’s history. A wonderful keepsake, it includes every child and class as well as the extra activities that make Engadine Public School exceptional.

The book can be ordered through the school office or purchased at the Fete for the cost of $30.

Parents and Carers are reminded that they are not to address children on the playground unless they are their own. This is an important matter pertaining to Child Protection. If a parent has a concern with the actions of a child, other than their own, they are to refer the matter to teachers of the school.

We are now taking enrolments for

Kindergarten 2018!

If you know anyone who will be starting

Kindergarten in 2018 please spread the word and

invite them to pick up an enrolment form from the front office.

We also have information regarding our Kindergarten Orientation days

commencing in October. Please let all your friends and neighbours know

about our wonderful school and encourage them to get their enrolments in as

soon as possible.

One of the most important things our children will ever learn is how to read. From their very first day, they have the expectation that when they come to school, they will learn to read. And they do. At school our reading programs use a combination of approaches to help children master this vital skill. Children need to have awareness and knowledge of letter sounds and combinations, and to hear them when spoken and recognise them when written. They need to have a large bank of words that they recognise on sight, and can read automatically. They need to have strategies for figuring out words that they don’t know or haven’t seen before. They need to read fluently and accurately. Children must, however, move beyond these “mechanical” or decoding skills, to develop reading for meaning, or comprehension. This involves, among other things, getting children to think about what they are reading, while they are reading, so that they are gaining information (and hopefully pleasure and insight) from the text. Comprehension is not just a formal response to a written passage. It’s very much about how children process information in all its forms—such as from conversations, television shows, movies, discussions and when problem-solving. It’s something that is ongoing—a process that takes place while the listening or viewing or reading or talking continues. Often, many children don’t actively think about what they see and hear. Information washes over them and they can, too often, be passive in the process. Our society is noisy, flooding the senses with continuous sounds and images. Children don’t necessarily take in the deeper messages and reflect on meaning and how it affects them as a reader or a viewer. So when it comes to reading, many children read the words but don’t relate to the text. Too often, they don’t laugh or cry, get excited or enthralled or have to read on because they’re bursting to know how things turn out! They don’t step into the characters’ shoes or get lost in imagination. Instead, they are reading mechanically—be it quickly and fluently – but they are not changed or informed by the experience of reading. As parents and teachers, we can help our children become discerning viewers and readers by talking to them about what they have seen or read; by asking questions that get them to reflect and relate to the content; by asking them to retell stories to see how much they have understood and retained; and by asking their opinions on favourite characters and story lines. We need to help them realise that reading is all about making meaning from the words on the page, and then going beyond this, to find meaning that relates to them as individuals.

Key Value: - Application (Social Key Of Success)

SCHOOL NEWS

Parents, we ask that you go through these skills with your children, and discuss the dos and don’ts. Perhaps you can ask them if

they have tried some of the strategies and what the result was. Children learn best when they are supported from both school and

home with a consistent message. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Making Decisions In Groups

Application is defined as putting things into action.

In the school environment, we ask that students apply themselves to the tasks that are assigned to them, whether in the

classroom environment, on the playground, or in friendship groups. It means that we have an expectation that each student

applies themselves to the best of their ability, with an aim to achieve their own personal best—at whatever level that may be. We

aim to respect their effort. Some people try very little and achieve great results, but others may try with mammoth effort to achieve

a lesser result—it is the effort we are aiming to acknowledge—and when each one is pushing themselves to their own limits, all

will have a greater opportunity to improve their personal levels of success.

Applying yourself so that you always put forward your best effort, means you show yourself in the best light at all times. It ensures

that you are being valued for what you are able to do.

Applying yourself to building relationships and friendships, means that you try to support others, and that you too seek support

when you need it—not shutting others out of your world. These skills are important life skills for mental and social well-being.

They also help to build personal self esteem. When applying yourself to a group task, others in your group understand that they

can rely on you—it builds a sense of trustworthiness, and a knowledge that you will contribute a fair share to the entire group task.

In turn it builds a sense of value in you as a valuable person to select in group tasks.

As students consistently aim for their personal best, their opportunity to succeed increases and their sense of achievement in

attaining improvement becomes an ongoing motivator. Students who have a high level of personal motivation to succeed tend to

apply themselves better to tasks and so the cycle becomes self perpetuating.

Social Skills

Do’s

Someone in the group makes a suggestion

and gives good reasons.

Ask each person in the group, one by one,

how they feel about the idea.

If there is complete agreement, you have a

decision.

If there isn’t agreement, ask for another idea

and then check how everyone feels about the

new idea.

Keep doing this until you get a decision that

everyone is comfortable with. You may have

to negotiate.

Don’ts

Don’t just ask one or two people how they

feel about an idea. Check with everyone!

Don’t see it as “losing” if your idea isn’t

accepted by other people.

Make sure everyone has

heard the comments, before

making a group decision.

The popular and extremely successful Sharks School Holiday clinic returns these School holidays.

To be held on 25th September 2017 at Captain Cook Oval & Summer Time Room, Sharkies Leagues Club—these clinics include plenty of footy fun to keep the most energetic youngster occupied.

The Junior Jaws clinic will be open to those aged 4 to 9, and will again focus on the fundamentals of the sport of Rugby League in a manner that will encourage young players to get involved in the fun of the game.

Super Jaws is an advanced clinic for boys and girls aged 10 years and over that wish to take their Rugby League skills to the next level. The program is ideal for players of Tackle, Touch & Tag and

the focus is on plenty of 1-on-1 coaching and small groups with our professional coaches. Following on from winter season footy, SuperJaws provides the perfect platform for skill development.

As well as a morning filled with footy and fun, participants will receive a Junior Jaws t-shirt, as well as being provided fresh bananas and water courtesy of Kareela Fresh Fruit. The Mini Mermaids cheer clinics will also make a return over the school holiday period. Those aged 3 to 6 will be treated to 60 minutes of dance, including games and a short routine followed by a signing and photo session with the Mermaids. The girls in the 7 to 12 group will enjoy a two-hour dance clinic with members of the Mermaids crew.

Each Mini Mermaid will receive a t-shirt and pom poms for participating in the dance clinic, as well as being provided fresh bananas and water courtesy of Kareela Fresh Fruit.
