Congrats to Tommy Valentin,
Newly Elected Sec/Tres
NOTICE: General Membership Meeting Change
As per the Local 80 Constitution and By Laws, the April 1 General Membership Meeting has been changed to April 8.
At the February General Membership meeting, brother Tommy Valentin was elected Secretary-Treasurer to replace brother Rick Schunke who retired at the end of the year after 18 years in the office and 40 some years as a Local 80 Grip. Valentin will serve until the next regular Local election.
Members Owe Rick Schunke a
Big Thank You for Decades of Service by Kent H Jorgensen
I would like to ask some indulgents from the members. December 29 was the last day in the office for Rick Schunke. 18 years ago Rick replaced Pat Hoff as Sec/Tres after Pats untimely death.
Rick had large shoes to fill. He and Pat were friends and part of an Executive Board and leadership that modernized the Local, increased the treasury, increased the real estate holdings, and made things transparent. The Local, with Rick on the board and as Sec/Tres, began the newsletter, it started one of the first websites for an IATSE Local, the Safety and Training Department was created,
it began the Jim Buck Benevolent fund, started organizing ancillary businesses, and began representing Marine Department workers.
Members depended on Rick. He was at the hall early, filling calls, talking to members, and giving council when needed.
I feel fortunate to know him. He deserves the appreciation of the membership for his years of service and for dedication.
Rick we wish you a great retirement. May the road raise up to meet your feet.
May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. Until we meet again.

I have, what seems like, the almost impossible task of filling the shoes that brother Rick Schunke once wore. His was a tough act to follow as was the act of the Secretary-Treasurer Pro Temp, Brother Craig Conover. To those who may think the work of secretary-Treasurer is a light weight job. Well, Im here to tell you its not. I find it as challenging as the toughest stage rig and just as rewarding.
Brother Schunkes almost 2 decades in this office and 40 plus years as a Local 80 member is a testament to not only his skills but also to his stamina. To Brother Schunke I salute you and say thank you for your many years of service. To Brother Criag Conover a big thank you for all your help in these past few weeks. For your grace and courtesy, again thank you. For your endless patience, thank you and for the endurance of listening to question after question what else could I say besides, thank you. The learning curve is long and wide, and I have much to catch up on. The day flies by as if it was only a minute. And, still I have much to do, much to learn.
To the brothers and sisters who placed their faith in me I also want to send out a big hearty THANK YOU. My pledge to you is hard work, tenacity, diligence and to be of service to you in all areas within the scope of the job you have charged me with. I am willing and ready to go the distance. But remember I cant do it without you.
Some of the things I have seen, as it relates to the members are: At least twice a day and as much as 5 times a day I receive a notice of claim for unemployment insurance. Somewhere between the member and EDD there seems to be a mis-communication of who the employer maybe. And, while we are here to help employment verification the Local is not the employer. We can let EDD know that you are listed as available. Also, if you call in when you get a call and when you are laid off, a copy of your work record can be sent out. Your employer of record for EDD purposes is the payroll company. So, please, keep in mind when filing for unemployment insurance the payroll company, not Local 80, should be listed as your employer.
The same would apply if you are filing for disability and workers comp insurance. And, this would be a big one. Filing the wrong information can and most likely will slow the process up and affect receiving the benefit in a timely manner. Again, the payroll company is the employer of record. If you are going on to be on disability or workers comp make sure you inform the plans, MPIPHP. This will help extend your health and welfare while recovering.
The other big one is members applying for a loan. In my short time here, I have already had 6 come across my desk. All asking the same questions. Questions of annual income and how long employed by the local etc. These questions are usually from and inexperienced loan officer. The only information the Local needs to provide is how long you have been in the Local and if you are in good standing. While I can provide a bit of information and send a nice letter about the nature of our work. The other information is something I am not privy to. So, when dealing with any loans, the Local is the employer to establish how long you have been at the job. The income verification has to be worked out with the locan people. In the end I believe it will save you valuable time and effort.
As noted in the previous newsletter, full dues for the year of 2018 are $227.00 and if you earned less $7396.00 then you'll be eligible for minimum dues. Also, please be aware that their other options if falling on slow times which include hardship dues and the Jim Buck memorial fund. Besides the local there are many venues of help to members of the Motion Picture industry. One only has to call and ask. Remembering that this is a brotherhood/sisterhood is to remember your not alone.
At our last general membership meeting we had a huge turnout. It was awe inspiring sight to see all the members who came out to cast your vote. It was an awesome display of unity and fellowship. For all those who have said in the past, some of you were at the meeting too, their vote doesnt count. I believe that is no longer a qualified reason not to attend a meeting. Your voice, your votes and your presence count beyond your belief. If you dont show up and you dont participate, believe it or not your vote still counts. No vote at all, is a vote for the winning team. So bare that in mind for any future elections. Suit up and show up, be a part of the process and together we can move mountains. Alone I cant but together we can. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the next general membership meeting.
In closing I would like to once again thank the membership. Keep in mind I am here for you and to be of maximum service to you. My door is always open to the you. I am but a phone call away. If I cant provide the answer I will do my best to seek the answer for you. No question is to silly and together no problem is insurmountable. Looking forward to the future. Tommy V.
From the Desk of the Secretary-Treasurer
