The Eighth Commandment: You Shall Not Give False Testimony Against Your Neighbor. Over and above our own body, spouse, and temporal possessions, we still have another treasure—honor and reputation. We cannot do without these. For it is intolerable to live among people in open shame and general contempt. Therefore, God does not want the reputation, good name, and upright character of our neighbor to be taken away or diminished, just as with his money and possessions. He wants everyone to stand in his integrity before wife, children, servants, and neighbors. . . . The plainest meaning of this commandment . . . applies to the public courts of justice, where a poor, innocent man is accused and oppressed by false witnesses in order to be punished in his body, property, or honor. The Eighth Commandment:

You Shall Not Give False Testimony

Against Your Neighbor.

Over and above our own body, spouse, and temporal possessions, we

still have another treasure—honor and reputation. We cannot do

without these. For it is intolerable to live among people in open

shame and general contempt. Therefore, God does not want the

reputation, good name, and upright character of our neighbor to be

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant,

his ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.

P What is the Eighth Commandment? C You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

P What does this mean? C We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him,

slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain

everything in the kindest way.

Matthew 16:26 – “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?” He who dies with the most toys….is dead. But the one who trusts in the Lord, even though he dies, yet shall he live. We live out our trust in the Lord by faithfully fulfilling the roles God has given us to play in home, church, and society as loving, generous people. Those who don’t know the Lord are afraid to be generous because they think that what they give away is lost to them. But we who know the Lord know that the things of this world become true blessings when they are used for God’s Kingdom.

Holy Communion is joyfully received here today. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and

blood into our mouths. His gift of body and blood, given in, with, and under the bread and wine, bestows

tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and

unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation.

All members of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings,

and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy

Sacrament are asked to meet with the pastor in the weeks before communing for the first time.

When you have examined yourself according to Christ’s bidding (1 Corinthians 11:28), come to His altar

rejoicing, just as Jesus asks, knowing that our Lord meets you here with joy.

Those coming to the altar for a blessing rather than Holy Communion are asked to cross their arms over their

chest.

Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Bible Study: 500 Years of the Gospel

Theme: What exactly was the Reformation? Why did it have to happen? Just what is it

that makes us Lutherans tick? As we celebrate this Five-Hundredth

Anniversary of the Reformation, we will answer these questions in a new Bible

Study. Specifically, we will discuss the first statements of faith by Martin

Luther, The Ninety-Five Theses (1517), and that of the Lutherans collectively, the

Unaltered Augsburg Confession (1530). You may pick up a bundle of both

documents for a total cost of $10.00. See Pastor Miller for more details.

Theme: We are pleased to announce our new church library. You may search the

historical fiction with religious subjects, music, hymnals, and theology.

Currently, we only offer titles for adults and reference/non-circulating

books. However, in the future our hope is to incorporate children’s books,

audio books, and DVDs of a religious nature, as well as sacred music on CD.

Bible Study: A Man Named Martin: The Man, the Moment, the Movement

Theme: As we near the celebration of the Five-Hundredth Anniversary of the Reformation, we will begin a new Bible Study looking at Martin Luther: his biography, the important events in which he played a major part, and the lasting impact he made on both the church’s and even Europe’s cultural landscape. This study is based on Lutheran Hour Ministries’ series A Man Named Martin, featuring a DVD video and guided instruction per session.

Catechetical Series: The Ten Commandments

Theme: During this five-hundredth anniversary of the Reformation, we’ve been taking

a look at some of our Lutheran teachings. In Bible Study, we’ve covered the

Ninety-Five Theses and the Augsburg Confession. And in Advent and Lent we

reviewed the Creed and the Lord’s Supper according to the Small Catechism.

This summer, we will revisit The Ten Commandments (also found in the Small

Catechism) in the readings, sermons, prayers, and hymns of worship. Through

this series, we will grow in love toward God and neighbor.

Day &Time: Sundays, July 9 through September 17 during Divine Service

Location: Church sanctuary

Rib Fest

Theme: Come one, come all! You, along with the rest of the congregation, are invited to

the Beckman’s house for their annual Rib Fest. Join Brian, Darlene, Isaac, and

Grayson for ribs, drinks, and hors d'oeuvres aplenty. They only request that

you bring a side, salad, and/or dessert to share, along with a lawn chair. Lots of

outdoor fun with backyard games and activities. Church van transportation is

available upon request, just speak to Pastor Miller. Please see signup sheet in

the narthex. See you there!

Restrooms are located to the right of the church entrance, down the hallway. Please see an usher if you need assistance.

Children are always welcome and encouraged to be in worship! For those who need it, however, we have a staffed nursery located down the hallway in the preschool. It is intended for children from birth to age 5. Hours of operation are 8:30 – 11:30 A.M.

For your convenience, a baby changing station is located in both the men’s and women’s restrooms on this level, just down the hall. For further privacy, a mother-infant station, which includes a rocking chair and changing table, is available in the enclosed lounge of the women’s restroom downstairs.

Each Sunday your child may pick up a “busy bag” from the stand in the Narthex. Each busy bag has different books and activities for your child to keep them busy during the Divine Service when they are unable to focus. Please return the pouch and its contents to the stand in the Narthex at the end of the service. This way the pouches will be clean and ready for the next Sunday’s service.
