There’s something always happening in the City of Kwinana. Within the last few months, we’ve released our Strategic Community Plan – our long-term vision for the City, adopted our budget for the 2017/18 financial year, celebrated young achievers through the LyriK Awards, announced our 2017 Junior and Senior Sportspersons of the Year award, wrapped up our SilverSport program, received multiple awards for our Kwinana Adventure Park and opened one of the largest skate parks in WA. Phew!

We still have so much more to bring to you before the close of 2017, much of which is detailed on the pages to come.

We’re proud to live and work in such an exciting, growing and eclectic locality. We hope you’re proud of Kwinana too.

CITY’S PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

The City’s Strategic Community Plan 2017-2027 has been formally adopted by Council. The Plan sets out the long-term vision and aspirations of the Kwinana community over the next 10 years, guiding all the work the City undertakes.

The Plan outlines not only what the community would like to see, but specific strategies for how the City plans to achieve this vision.

The Strategic Community Plan lays out a clear direction for the City. It holds us accountable to our community’s vision while ensuring we remain focused on the ‘big picture’. Everything we do as a Council is a step towards achieving the vision outlined in the Strategic Community Plan.

The newly adopted Plan is the first major review of the document initially adopted in 2013. Extensive consultation with the Kwinana community was undertaken during 2016 and 2017 to ensure the Plan remained in-line with the growing and changing Kwinana community. Ideas were collected through a series of workshops and surveys at community events, online and via mail.

To read the full version of the Plan, see www.kwinana.wa.gov.au/ourvision.

KWINANA HISTORY ON DISPLAY

A DOG’S TALE

ANNIVERSARY OF A KING AND A PRETTY MAIDEN

On 15 November, Kwinana Public Library will be hosting an interactive exhibition to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the S.S. Kwinana – the ship our City is named after.

SS Kwinana was an Australian ocean-going cargo and passenger steamship. She was built in England in 1892 as the cargo ship SS Darius, after King Darius the Great of Persia.

In 1912 she changed owners, was refitted as a cargo and passenger ship and renamed Kwinana, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘young woman’ or ‘pretty maiden’.

Join us as we relive Kwinana’s dramatic history, the lives of the sailors aboard her and explore some intriguing local ideas about her secrets – what treasures lay within her hold?

For booking information, follow our local history blog at www.voicesofkwinana.org or contact Kwinana Public Library on 9236 4300.

At the City of Kwinana, we do our best to reunite families with their pets, but that’s not always possible. We work with local agencies to assist in re-homing abandoned pets. Dane is one of our success stories.

Dane ended up at the City’s animal management facility around June 2014. Even though he was sterilised and microchipped, no one came for him and as a result when his impound time was served, he was delivered to the Animal Protection Society (APS).

“Dane went into foster care and one day, I happened to see an email with his photo,” said Hazel from APS.

“Having recently lost my dog, I felt drawn to meet Dane and the rest is history. He was adopted by me in August 2014.”

Dane has been appointed as the APS Ambassadoggy.

“He comes into the shelter to help out and has play dates with some of the dogs,” added Hazel.

“He has been used to temper test new dogs and he’s been an amazing foster brother to many dogs who have come to APS.”

Dane also visits schools and workplaces in his role of Ambassadoggy. He has donated blood to help save other dogs’ lives and has completed his first certificate in sniffer dog training.

“Dane is good with other dogs. He lives with a cat, he loves people and is great with kids,” said Hazel.

“Everyone who meets him can’t believe how such a well-mannered, house-trained and sociable dog can find himself unclaimed, but both he and I are so glad that he ended up at the animal management facility and eventually came to APS.

“Dane has gone from tragic to magic and is living his dream.”

“This story of Dane shows the great lengths we at the City go, to ensure all impounded animals are given a home,” said Mayor Carol Adams.

“We do our best to reunite pets with their owners, but when that’s not possible, we work to re-home the animals to ensure a good outcome for both the animal and its new owner.”

SCOUTS WA

Scouting is a growing worldwide youth movement with nearly 40 million members – 7,400 of those are in Western Australia.

The Kwinana Scout Hall in Brownell Crescent is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Since officially opening in 1977, the scouting movement has been going strong in Kwinana, but there are always opportunities to get involved.

Scouting is about helping young people be the best they can be, developing all facets of life so they can grow to become constructive citizens in their communities.

Fun, challenge, adventure and lifelong friendships await those who join Scouts.

Learning life skills, growing in self confidence and gaining valuable leadership and team skills are all part of the Scout program, which is delivered by nationally accredited trained leaders in safe, but still adventurous, environments.

Young boys and girls, men and women can progress through the five Scouting sections – Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Rovers or can start in any section depending on their age.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

SPRING IN YOUR STEP

Spring is here, so it’s time to emerge from the winter hibernation and get moving.

LiveLighter encourages adults to lead healthier lifestyles – one way is to be active every day.

Aim to build in at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every day. You can even break it up into three lots of 10 minutes – easy to fit in around work and family commitments.

Being active doesn’t mean you need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment. Look at simple ways to sneak activity into your day – walk to the bus stop, play chasey with the kids, do some gardening, dance to music or take the stairs instead of the lift. Give it a go and you might be surprised how quickly it can all add up.

Of course competing in a sport or participating in an active class for fun and fitness receive a big tick of approval.

Look around your local area – there are cycle paths, parks and open spaces as well as sport and recreation facilities in suburbs across the City.

Our Healthy Lifestyles team holds regular events, information sessions and play sessions that are free to help get our community feeling fit and healthy.

A great way is to choose an activity you enjoy that fits into your lifestyle. Set small and achievable goals and reward yourself when you reach your goals.

For more tips to lead a healthy life, visit www.livelighter.com.au. For more information about the City’s Healthy Lifestyles initiatives, visit www.kwinana.wa.gov.au/healthylifestyles.

NATURE IN KWINANA

Local elections are just around the corner and you should be

receiving your voting pack in the mail at the end of this month.

For further information visit www.elections.wa.gov.au

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT

Election day is on 21 October. Please make your vote count.

September is International Month of Biodiversity. To celebrate, local artist Scott Daly will exhibit his work at the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre throughout September. His exhibition, entitled No Destination, is an exploration of life – both the diversity and predictability of form – which draws the observer to look at the environment from a different perspective.

Also in September, we have the annual Wildflower Walk with the Murdoch Branch of the Wildflower Society. This will be held from 10am to 12noon on Sunday, 17 September, meeting at Sandringham Park, Nottingham Parkway, Orelia.

This event also presents the opportunity for people to experience an art installation produced by Scott Daly that will be situated along the Wildflower Walk Path, adding a new dimension to the ‘stripped back organic form’ and observing nature from a different perspective.

We will also have a Nightstalk at Sloans Reserve on Saturday, 30 September from 6pm and at Belgravia Damplandon Saturday, 14 October at 6:30pm.

There will be opportunities to participate in early morning bird surveys on weekends in September and Questagame activities during the September school holidays as part of the Kwinana Fauna Watch Project.

For more information and to register for the Wildflower Walk or Nighstalk, please contact our Bushcare Officer on 9439 0418 or email [email protected].
