Nanne NyanderNanne Nyander was born in Sweden.

Painting and drawing was part of Nanne’s life from early childhood. Her talent followed her through the years in her life, as she says “The path of Painting has no end”.

Nanne studied at Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy and spent several years painting in the studio of Odd Nerdrum in Norway. The Renaissance and the Dutch masters inspired her painting in oil; her amaz-ing style of painting gives a deep and powerful message. This attracted the attention of many private collectors around the world as well as notable institutions including the National Portrait Gallery in London, England and Jonkopings Lans Museum in her native Sweden. “A great Painting is compressed of several elements”, says Nanne “There is a technical aspect which one learns from a teach-er or in the Academy, but just as impor-tant is the painters ability to see“.

Her painting is an inspirational sig-nificance of how she feels. She paints

Angels with a message. The message of love and happiness, in her paintings she creates harmony and increase the meaning for our existence, this make a difference in each individual’s life. “I paint Angels with a message of Awak-ening and Healing. My goal is to inspire people, to make them feel peaceful and happy.”

Nanne’s vision of the concept behind each painting is to transmit each one of us to the circle of the complete positive energy that surrounded us.

So much more can be said about Nanne’s painting, but one important point is that through her painting she shows what inspire us to create a better world for ourselves, to finding tranquility and stillness, and this all follows in Nanne’s painting. In each painting you find not just an Angelical image, is the communication between you and her painting.

She is working on a series of Angel paintings called “Angels of Virtues”. Nanne currently lives in Sweden where she operates her own studio.

Chakra Journey

When I grew up in the 70’s, chakra’s were a popular sub-ject to discuss in books and on TV programs. They would show beautiful colored charts with detailed information that explained the chakras and their positions on our bod-ies. All of the information was fascinating but I could never keep all that “New Age” stuff straight in my head. Even af-ter I was trained in Reiki en-ergy healing, I felt the idea of the seven main chakras points on our bodies was just an ancient fairy tale. A trip to the doctor’s office one day changed my whole perspec-tive on this fairy tale to a sci-entific fact.

My mom and I were waiting for her internist doctor’s office for over an hour with nothing to look at except an anatomi-cal medical chart hanging on the wall. I got so bored while waiting for the doctor, I actu-ally started studying the chart showing all the glands in our body. I giggled to myself about how this chart of the “Endocrine System” brought back memories of my old high school biology class. The chart showed the pineal, pituitary, thyroid, thymus, ad-renals, pancreas, and repro-ductive glands. Suddenly I realized that the glands were

in the same positions where I memorized to place my hands during energy healing ses-sions. I counted the glands shown all down the body, there were seven main areas on the medical chart just like there are seven main chakras on our body. Before my eyes was scientific proof of the chakra positions and why it’s important they need to be kept energetically balanced. The endocrine system is the glands in our bodies that con-trols our hormones. We all know how important it is to keep our hormones balanced thanks to advances in mod-ern medicine. The hormones affect our emotions which controls how we view our-selves, how we connect with the outside world, and how we connect to our inner world within ourselves.

The information about the chakras has been around for thousands of years. I was astounded that ancient cultures knew about such a sophisticated system in our bodies and how important it was to keep the gland ar-eas balanced and healthy. I was under the impression the chakras and their positions on our bodies was based on myth or legend.

This time the information handed down over the cen-turies wasn’t lost in transla-tion or even embellished.

Now that I realized their ac-tual existence, I could easily visualize the chakra areas in my mind, thanks to my new found knowledge from an old doctor’s medical chart. In fact, it made sense to what I felt for years during Reiki healing sessions. Most of the energy I felt flowing out of my hands during healing sessions were when I placed my hands at from the top of the head down to the groin area. Unless they had injured legs or feet, I usu-ally didn’t feel much of my en-ergy being pulled out of me in the lower areas of their body. I was intrigued to learn more about our chakras since it re-ally did correspond to energy healing.

I knew the next thing I felt compelled to learn about the chakras were all the differ-ent colors that corresponded to each of the chakra’s posi-tions.

At the time, books were in-consistent with the color information, different au-thors had their own opin-ions. The internet network was incredibly slow and

such a chore to do research with the world wide web. I was totally in the dark and frustrated not knowing the proper colors to each chakra. I knew this information could really enhance my meditative healing sessions. I put my research on hold since I wasn’t getting very far.

In the meantime, I concen-trated on conducting as many energy healing sessions as I could for people of all ages, shapes and sizes. We are all unique individuals so every energy session feels differ-ent. Stress and trauma can make a person’s energy field around their body to become scattered or bunched in ar-eas. As a Reiki healer, I use the energy flowing through me from my Higher Power Source to help smooth out the person’s energy to evenly flow around their body. Now, being able to visualize the chakra energy portals on the their body, I used these portals like safety values to help re-balance their areas. I would add or release their energy through these natural port holes. The one thing that all the healing sessions had in common was the fact that I could feel their energy emit-ting from the top their head and shoulders the easiest.

Chakra Journey

The wave of energy from the top area of their body would pulsate at rapid rate compared to the torso and the legs. The lower areas of the body had a slower pulsating wave of energy emitting from them. Memories of my middle school science class experience flashed be-fore my eyes during a healing session. I saw charts of wave pulses being com-pared to the frequency of the energy. A quicker pulse of energy meant a higher frequency and a slower pulse of energy meant a lower frequency. I knew col-ors pulsated at different light frequen-cies and that’s how our eyes detected different color distinctions, but could never remember which colors emitted a higher or lower frequency.

Later I came upon a chakra book that showed the colors in a simple way. They showed bands of colors across an out-line of a person’s body. I was always so over whelmed with this foreign concept of chakras and the colors associated with them, that I never paid attention to the pattern of the colors. I knew if I wanted to remember the bands of color I would have to write the colors down in a notebook. I drew each band with a colored marker over a rough outline of a person. I put the first letter of each band of color to help me figure out a memorable acronym, so I wrote down R O Y G B I V.

I couldn’t believe I didn’t realize the colors of the chakras were all the main colors of the rainbow! We used to call ROY G. BIV the rainbow-man in elementary school, it was a fun way to

learn how to draw rainbows. I thought it was fitting that the rainbow-man’s green color which was in the heart of his name was in the same position of the heart chakra. Line up the green color on the heart and all the rest of the colors just fall into place and into the correct posi-tions. Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Root.

I could finally easily visualize the chakra positions and their colors, I wanted to verifythe pulsating energy compared to the color frequency. I was hoping that what I was feeling during the Reiki healingsessions wasn’t just my imagi-nation. The library had an old science school book showing all the colors that create white light which was the same colors of the chakras, ROY G B I V. The violet color, which is located at the top of the head, was shown in the book to have the highest frequency and the quickest pulse rate. The red color, which is located at the groin area, was shown in the book to have the lowest frequency and the slowest pulse rate. Scientific proof of what I was experi-encing was an accurate account of the energy emitting from the person receiv-ing my Reiki energy!

All this information coming together made me a true believer in the exis-tence of the seven main chakras on our bodies. I know sometimes you have to step out in faith and accept information that has been written, but I also think it’s important to be a student of life and engage in your own research before receiving information as a fact.

Page 11: The eden magazine

11 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM • June 2012

The main concept, I couldn’t ever keep it straight in my mind was, if the chakras were spinning to the left on one color frequency or spinning to the right on another, and how the colors interacted with each other when the chakras are spinning independently parallel to the ground? In one of my meditations, I saw a rainbow-man receiving the white light from his Higher Power Source. The white light entered through the top of his head and exited out from his low-est chakra, the exited light expanded and penetrated the Earth. The energy of light narrowed down to enter the rainbow-man’s head, the white energy started to spin like a vortex all the way through him. Inside the man was a rain-bow colored tornado of energy running all the way through him. All the colors were spinning in the same direction but the chakras kept their individual light frequencies to create the rainbow ef-fect. He looked just like a cool tornado science project, as long as the white light was channeled through him all the colors spun in unison in the same direc-tion vertically connecting to the earth. The rainbow-man became a worm hole for the light energy to tap into the Earth. He literally became a vessel that chan-neled the energy connection between Heaven and Earth. The rainbow-man’s colors grew brighter and brighter which also made the earth grow brighter. I felt that this was a verification that prayer and meditation is a way to raise the vibrational level to our third dimension-al world. Perhaps if we all do our part to raise the vibrational levels of our-selves then the fourth dimension could

become reality here on Earth.

Every time I think of the chakras I visualize a pulsating rainbow-man. I thought it was fascinating that we are made up of all the colors that create white light. When all the colors of light are perfectly blended together they are all seen as one beam of white light. Perhaps when we learn to perfectly balance our chakras to work in unison we become what the ancient cultures called “enlightened”. To glow from with-in the white light of our Higher Power Source would be awesome! At the very least, in our current imperfect state of being, we refract the perfect white light into the colors of the rainbow.

Rainbows made of light frequencies nestled together is still an awesome display of how the Universe works. In the beginning of the Universe all that existed was expanding white light. At end of our Universe all there will be left is white light, but we will all be brought back to our original Source of Light, making the rainbows of light blossom into pure white energy once more.

Expanding my mind with old school lessons to gain valuable knowledge was purely accidental. Sometimes you have to go back to the basics in order to move forward with new ideas.

FALLING APART FALLING TOGETHER

I remember somewhere I had heard the expression, “....When things are falling apart, they are really falling together.” That was a wonderful statement to hear, as long as nothing was falling apart. But (and this is crucial) WHEN things feel or seem to, or ARE falling apart, how many of us can pull ourselves away, even for a moment, and think this way? Not many. And the question is.....WHY? Why do we let ourselves get wrapped up in the drama? Why do we let ourselves get caught up in emotional trauma that is not our ‘doing’? Answer: it IS our doing. We create all of it, with our thoughts, and everything on the outside of you, is a reflection of what is TRULY going on within.

By Ellen Heller

Page 17: The eden magazine

17 THEEDENMAGAZINE.COM • June 2012

Hard to accept at times, isn’t it? Well un-less we take responsibility for all of it, we cannot change ANY of it. We are pure reflections of God; we are Spirit, not mat-ter. We are an Intelligent Idea in the Sacred Design of the Universe/One Mind/God/ All that Is. We come here for a purpose and everything that comes into our reality is because on some level, we desire to experience it.. When someone is in trouble, it is our natu-ral state to wish to help. For the Truth is, what blesses one, blesses all. What you do for someone else, you do for you, for we are all connected....We are All One.

This is not to say that we choose ‘con-sciously’ to suffer or to be victimized. It is rather a decision, a Soul decision, in order to decide what we wish to be in rela-tion to it all...that is why all holy collabo-rations are called “relationships.” (This is all explained in depth in a wonderful book, called Conversations With God, Book 1, by Neale Donald Walsch).

If we look around us, many of us see that things are not the way we wish; we some-times wonder how others even handle their lives, if it appears more challenging than our own; we often day dream about a better life than what we have, no matter what we own or whom we have to share our moments with. In truth, usually things appear as if they are falling apart because we have been trying to manipulate the Universe. We, within the confines of our physical struc-tures, do all we can to ‘get our way.’ Of-tentimes, we really don’t know what ‘our

way’ really leads to. We sometimes marry the wrong person, and live in quiet des-peration, waiting to die, but afraid to. We choose a job we do not like because we went to school for it, and feel we cannot change at this late stage of our lifetime. We also close off those around us, think-ing that we can just numb ourselves by using either legal or illegal substances. And we will do this until we do not.

But the Truth of who we Really Are is Pure Perfection; There is nothing we have to do, and no where we have to go; we cre-ate every rule and regulation that we live by. We so often do this to stop ‘Things from Falling Apart....’ Only problem is that it doesn’t prevent that at all. LISTENING with your heart; FEELING with your Soul; DECIDING what you wish to be in your GREATEST and GRANDEST version and vision of yourself, of Who You Really Are (which is Spirit)...that is why we are here….and that is what causes it all to finally “fall together.” And, if you cannot do this for yourself, do for another, and it will be done onto you as well, for we truly are all One Mind/Spirit. Remember, ...’Everything’s ok in the end; if it’s not ok, then it’s not the end. Blessed Be.

Question: Dear Spirit-Minded: I have been reading some terrible things about 2012. I also read that we should renounce everything we can to ‘pre-pare!’ I like my life and what I have; I also would like to keep it that way. What do I do about this? I don’t know how to think about it all. Some are calling it “judgment day,’ with the world ending, and I am so scared! Could you help me with this? From Scared

Answer: Dear Scared: There is only Love. There is nothing therefore to renounce. Any renouncing of anything is an untruth, for there is nothing but Love. We make up rules and regulations in order to feel we are doing ‘good’ and then punish ourselves if we don’t live up to these rules and regulations. There is only God/Love. To renounce means you are doing your best to ‘not need’ something anymore, and in truth, you are without need anyway. A state-ment of saying we must ‘not need’ is actually saying that we ‘do need,’ but do not ‘want to.” Being in gratitude for all we have and all we are is enough...enough to keep everything we have and to need noth-ing (no thing). There is no need for God in that need-ing implies we do not have God, and God is all we do have; all we truly Are. Therefore, WE DO NOT ‘NEED’ SOME-THING WE ALREADY HAVE! There is only one Being here, and that is Love....and....recognizing We Are That; we are Love, is a completeness that re-

quires nothing else. Pray (be in Grati-tude, which is the True Prayer), for an uplifting of the Consciousness for All, including Self, for an awakening into the New Age,/the New Earth is what and why we have chosen to incarnate at this most Sacred time in our history. All are Blessed.. All are part of this re-birthing....Welcome to this most Wonderful Year...2012!Blessings for a most joyful year, for this IS the year that is truly The New Age in full Glory.

Question: Dear Spirit-Minded: I try so hard to let everyone know that they are safe, that everything is really ‘all good,’ but they won’t listen to me. They call me a crazy ‘new ager,’ old hippie, etc., and the more I try, the more they turn away...what am I doing wrong? From Tired of Trying

Answer: Dear Tired: Why didn’t Jesus heal the whole world? You know, as a Master, he could have, but did not. Rea-son? They didn’t ask! Yes, in the wis-dom of Jesus, The Christ, He knew and understood that some Souls wished to go through what they were going through, and would only assist those whom asked. This path is one of not intruding. Even writing this “Spiritual Guidance Column,” is something that is written as I am asked for help. Intru-sion only leads to resentment, anger and fear. Practice on only giving ‘in-formation’ when someone asked, and your reality will change into a most lov-ing and fulfilling experience.Blessings!

The Flow of Life

WE speak to you now about the flow of life. It is important for you to understand this undeniable process. Fore, once you understand the flow of life, acceptance comes. And then you will do what is necessary to remain and stay with the natural flow of things. When this is accomplished dreams come true, and your heart’s and soul’s desires become obtainable.

By: Elliott Eli Jackson

22 THEDENMAGAZINE.COM • June 2012

Page 23: The eden magazine

The laws of the universe dictate what the flow of life is. Almost all processes on your planet, your home, your earth, flow and work in conjunction with gravity. There is reason and purpose that rivers flow a cer-tain way. And it has to do with gravity.

Even the thought process follows grav-ity. Why? Surprisingly, to many, the most mass in the body is oxygen or air, which is, as WE tell you now, spirit. And, in grav-ity, everything moves towards the most mass or in correlation to it. This means that the spiritual portion of you is primary and should be treated as such. Thoughts are not concrete but are spirit. It is, there-fore, the spirit or thought whose move-ment must flow down into and through the body for the actual physical action to oc-cur. Now, with only a few exceptions, do things not flow down? Salmon are one of these exceptions. Salmon swim upstream to reproduce in the same spot or place where they were laid and hatched. Water in plants and trees is another exception. And, to be sure, there are other examples that WE ask you to look into and inves-tigate for yourself. Fore, remember, WE promote self-instruction in many areas. And, in fact, when you research things for yourself you are participating in the pro-cess of self-realization, which, of course, is spiritual also. REMEMBER, you are everything and everything is you.

Many people on planet earth do not have that which they desire because they are fighting the flow of things. What is the flow of things, you may ask. Well, the flow of things is that all thoughts and ideas start as a vibration. All things are of a vibration-al nature, and thus spiritual. Understand-

ing this and starting to use this knowledge can and will allow you to prosper in life because you will know that success is your right. You will intuitively feel that you were born to succeed, that failure should not be an option. You will know that in the case of failure you are supposed to feel bad and be depressed. Realizing this and accepting this will set you on a course to-wards success.

Fore, at this point, the spiritual portion of your being, if at or guided towards a higher vibration, will push to the forefront of the being and will bring about the solu-tion. This is why, after failure, one natu-rally seeks inside self to figure out what went wrong, wrong being a relevant term. Therefore, if a thought or idea is of a high vibration it will produce like results. The results will be a successful outcome. If the thought or idea is of a low vibration it will produce a like result. The results will be mediocre or less than the success-ful outcome wished for. The issue with human beings on planet earth is that many are settling for the mediocre or less than successful outcome. This is because they fear stepping out and changing their personal vibration that brought the origi-nal thought which produced the action or actions. You do not have to be one of them.

WE tell you it is possible for you to change the vibration within self and get back into the natural flow of life that is Suc-cess. Continue, therefore, to read this magazine and others like it that lift the spirit of man and woman, and guide you towards the heavens or US – God.

THE FOUR SPIRITUAL ELEMENTSBy; Sally Morningstar

The four physical elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water are manifested in our reality by solidity, fresh air, winds, warmth, light, rain, oceans, rivers and lakes. These are the manifested aspects of each Element. The four Elements also have qualities in the spiritual dimensions that can be used to develop a deeper personal understanding of our true nature. Going deeper into self and developing self awareness is probably THE most incredible journey we can take in a lifetime - a journey I hope more and more people will come to value and appreciate.

AIRThe physical Air Element is closest to Spirit (or ether) that is the space that contains all of the spiritual and physi-cal Elements. When Spirit descends into the physical Elements it travels from Spirit into Air, Air into Fire, Fire into Water and Water into Earth, travel-ling from the most refined down to the densest. Thus to bring Spirit down to Earth, we begin with the Air Element and the qualities of Spiritual Air. Within the air we breathe we can also find the qualities of Spiritual Air, those finer virtues so lack-ing in the human spirit these days – hon-esty, integrity, honour and truth.

NEGATIVE SPIRITUAL AIRThe unrefined manifestations of Spiri-tual Air would include negative thinking, poor communication, gossip, inability to learn and grow, tyranny, fear and anxiety, dishonesty, mental chaos, psychic confu-sion.

POSITIVE SPIRITUAL AIRThe pure qualities of Spiritual Air are hon-esty, the ability to learn and understand, integrity, clear communication, construc-tive thinking, honour, mental harmony, clairaudience, and intellectual brightness.

Air – Purity of MindOur thoughts must become spiritually pure so that they do not hinder evolution from the lower to higher mind. The lower or limbic mind – is our place of survival and primal instincts. The Limbic must evolve into the neo-cortex (the frontal lobes of the brain).

FIREThe physical aspects of the Fire Element are warmth and light. The fire of the Sun is central to Creation for without it there would be no life. The spiritual essence of the Fire Element does not consist of the physi-cal flames that we see with the naked eye. It is a vital energetic and vibrant force that brings courage, strength and nobility. Spir-itual Fire is transformative – moving the seeker to greater consciousness by ‘burn-ing away’ those things that no longer serve us well. Spiritual Fire, like when making a real fire, requires a sacrifice of some kind; the tree; its branches, the candle flame; its waxen body. With humans – for example - cowardice must be sacri-ficed in order for bravery to emerge.

NEGATIVE SPIRITUAL FIREWhen being met by lower frequencies in the soul, Spiritual Fire can produce aggression, domination, cowardice, tem-per, erratic behaviour, unpredictability and egotism.

POSITIVE SPIRITUAL FIREThe purest qualities of Spiritual Fire are courage, nobility, inner conviction, strength, humility, compassion, passion, and transformation.

Fire - Light of the DivineLove is light and heat and life itself. Spiri-tual Fire reveals to the soul how to fight cold reason and logic with simple love. Love awakens Divine consciousness and devotion.

WATERThe physical Water Element flows acrossmost of the Earth and our bodies containover 75% of it. We birth in physical formfrom the waters of a womb. The SpiritualWater Element presides over the emo-tions, the feelings and perceptions. It is flowing by nature and teaches us how to be flexible and adaptable. Just as physical water cleanses, quenches and cultivates the land so Spiritual Water brings us op-portunities to cleanse emotions, quench our spiritual thirst, and cultivate our inner being. The spiritual Water Element also governs sleep, dreams, psychism and re-lationships of all kinds.

NEGATIVE SPIRITUAL WATERSpiritual Water when hindered by blocks in the soul will induce over-emotionalism, reactionary behaviour, stagnation, inse-curity, doubt, inflexibility, depression, and mood swings.

POSITIVE SPIRITUAL WATERThe purest expressions of Spiritual Water are love, flexibility, devotion, co-operation, clarity, developed intuition, serenity and grace. The Spiritual Water Element helps us to develop clear boundaries, clarity of purpose and direction, and deepen under-standing of our inner feelings and senses.

Water - Baptism of the SoulResponsibilities are opportunities. Learn to discriminate between unnecessary bur-dens and spiritual opportunities. Water is symbolic of the emotional nature. We learn to become still, so that the tranquil waters within us may reflect the Divine, no matter

what the outer circumstances in life. We find a state of tranquility and calmness that is based upon strength - not upon lethargy and indifference.

EARTHThe Earth Element in its physical manifes-tation provides us with the material world, with all matter, food, vegetation, and spe-cies. These are the physical aspects of the Earth Element. Spiritual Earth invites us to wisdom and understanding, to mak-ing connections and realizing our reliance upon Creation; and thus to honouring and respecting the Earth. We learn to be-come reliable, to embodying all the best attributes of a Mother full of unconditional love. As with all things we have the choice whether we move in negative or positive ways with Earth’s spiritual potential.

NEGATIVE SPIRITUAL EARTHThe baser, more negative translation of Spiritual Earth energy within our characters would include obstinacy, stubbornness, sexual dysfunction, poverty conscious-ness, inflexibility, unreliability, meanness, laziness, and sloth.

POSITIVE SPIRITUAL EARTHThe highest qualities of Spiritual Earth would include wisdom, stability, reliability, protection and strength in adversity, en-durance, clairsentience, nourishment and abundance. We can work with the Spiritual Earth element when needing to psychical-ly protect someone, because of its abilities to earth and stabilize unwanted or over-charged energy.

Earth – All Substance is Formed from the Formless All solid matter is charged with formless Divine energy. The spiritual Earth element teaches the soul how to free itself. Releas-ing self from the bondage of matter can be likened to crucifixion and death, but onlyof that which is not the true self. Earth knows that we cannot die, that we still live on. The candidate for Earth must realise that life can never die. The dead body is simply the shedding of a skin. The soul returns to its true home – which is in the timeless, formless space.

How to evolve the four Spiritual Elements forms part of my online magical appren-ticeship scheme, details of which can be found on my website.

Worthless Woman, Worthless DogBy Debra J. White

For $2.00 I got Maxine. The drug dealer didn’t want the scabby dog but snatched my lunch money instead. That was back in 1988 when I was a social worker in a decaying Bronx neighborhood overrun with crack cocaine, heavily armed thugs, and packs of hungry stray dogs.

By 1999, my beloved Maxine faded from age and diabetes complications. I feared the end was near. Judy, my other adopt-ed dog, was never alone. So I asked my friend Theresa to join me at the county shelter to adopt a dog. Hundreds of cast off mixed breeds and purebreds yapped for my attention as we strolled down the aisles. Their eyes melt-ed my heart, pleading for love. I could only take one. Who would it be? Luke wasn’t on my list of potential can-didates. Other dogs had more spunk. A plump black mutt with a cute wiggle

caught my attention. Theresa steered me to a big red terrier mix with sad eyes. Re-luctantly, I caved in and took a look. Originally brought in as a stray, Luke was adopted then returned a month later. The new owner said Luke would be an incon-venience during his impending move. Once outside the noisy shelter, Luke brightened up. He smothered my face with slobber. From side to side his tail flapped. Tipping his head back he howled, as if belting out a top ten hit. My motor-ized scooter was no impediment for him although he tried lifting his leg on the rear wheel. Luke sat like a good boy, hand-ed me his paw and rolled on his back, kicking his legs in the air. There was no way to resist his canine charm so I ad-opted him that sweltering July afternoon. I thanked Theresa for her persistence in nudging me towards Luke’s cage.

Maxine as it turned out hung on for almost another two years. Luke and Maxine con-nected even though my older dog wasn’t much of a play partner. Mostly, she slept. Judy and Luke however romped and frol-icked in the backyard, playing with toys and chasing each other in and out of the doggie door. The two were inseparable. I loved Judy but she was fickle due to pre-vious maltreatment. I rescued her from a shelter in 1992. Luke, however, loved and adored everyone. He had personality plus. What about pet therapy?

A car accident in 1994 left me critically injured. My two dogs, Maxine and Judy, played a major role in my recovery. Dur-ing their bedside visits, I correctly identi-fied each dog at a time when I didn’t know my own name or where I was. Medical re-cords showed slow steady improvement after they spent time with me. Two months later, the rehab center discharged me to a vastly different world. At the age of 39, I lost my career and part of my mobility. If it wasn’t for two wet noses kissing me ev-ery morning, I would’ve lapsed into a deep depression. I felt worthless - disabled, un-employable and uninsurable. Maxine and Judy pushed me off the pity pot. Slowly, I re-invented myself as an animal shelter volunteer, freelance writer, and pet thera-pist. I shrugged off society’s view that I was a heap of nothing, even though I had plenty of contrary experiences related to using a wheelchair but that’s for another story.

Luke showed potential for pet therapy, such as ease around strangers and over-

all good nature. I wanted to share his gifts with sick or injured patients, just as Max-ine and Judy uplifted me when my life un-expectedly capsized.

Luke breezed through a behavior test and passed a medical examination, allowing us to join the Companion Animal Associa-tion of Arizona, a non-profit pet therapy group. As a team we would visit sick, el-derly, or injured patients at a rehab center every Friday morning.

On our first week, Luke endeared himself to the recreation assistant, a gregarious 40 something woman named Kim with a Julia Roberts smile. Luke and Kim de-veloped a comical routine that never wa-vered for the three years we visited the center. At 9:00 a.m. Luke and I waited in the lobby. As soon as Kim approached, Luke’s tail wiggled in circles. He yipped and yowled. I let go of his leash, cracking up as my dog dashed down hall throw-ing himself into Kim’s tender, loving arms. Smiling, Kim jostled good-naturedly with Luke and then we made our rounds through the center. My twice abandoned dog was on a roll. He did his job with gus-to.

Patients welcomed me and Luke. Reac-tions to Luke were priceless, such as Ma-ria, the older Latina woman with a brain hobbled by a stroke. Only two words remained in her vocabulary – Maria, Maria. When Luke and I rolled into herroom, the tender expression on her face said she was pleased. Grinning, she stroked Luke with her good hand and said “Maria, Maria.”

Page 32: The eden magazine

32 THEDENMAGAZINE.COM • June 2012

I always said hello and asked how she was. Nodding, she replied, “Maria, Maria.” As Luke brushed against her wheelchair, the gleam in eyes showed appreciation.

An older, be-speckled patient named Will saved treats for Luke, such as ba-con strips, hard-boiled eggs, and soggy wheat toast, which my dog gobbled up in seconds. Luke’s bad manners tickled Will. Two years later, Will suddenly died. As we bypassed his room, Luke yanked on his leash as if to say, “What about Will?” He missed the old man’s affection and the tasty treats he always saved for him.

And then there was Frank. For reasons I never understood, Luke picked Frank as his special friend. A long-term patient, Luz, Frank’s mother, was stricken with terminal lung and heart disease. In his younger years, Frank drank to excess, was chronically unemployed and gam-bled away his mother’s meager earnings as a janitor. Later in life, Frank spruced up his act. Now his mother needed him and Frank visited her daily. Every time Luke saw Frank he bellowed as if he’d seen his best friend. Then Luke cuddled with Frank, soaking up the affection. Frank piled on generous hugs and kiss-es. Although Luz was on a ventilator, she was amused by their tender interaction. I asked Frank why he didn’t adopt a dog. “I’m here all day,” he said. “It’s not fair to leave the dog all alone.”

One scorching summer day, I ran into Frank a few years after I stopped vol-unteering at the center. He invited me in

for iced-tea. On the couch there rested a big mixed breed dog. Frank’s mother had passed away and I expressed my condolences. A stray dog had followed Frank in a parking lot. He remembered all the good times he shared with Luke. So he picked up the dog and gave him a fabulous home. Visiting some residents tugged at my heart. Not everyone had family members, friends, or neighbors to assume care for their beloved dogs or cats. One woman cried when she first met Luke. “I had to surrender my cat Wheezy to a shelter when I came here. I felt,” she said with weepy eyes.

Nearly every week she asked me to find out what happened to Wheezy. I said the shelter did their best to find her a good home. As a shelter volunteer, I knew that old cats faced great odds. They were rare-ly adopted but I kept that harsh reality to myself. The old woman was overwhelmed enough. Luke’s presence swept a small smile across her face, even though she preferred cats.

Not everyone at the rehab center with-ered away. Some patients like Irma and Dottie recovered and moved into assisted living facilities where pet ownership was often permitted, sometimes even encour-aged, so seniors stayed active. Irma, Dottie and other patients asked me for shelter or rescue contacts to adopt old-er cats or dogs for company. Research shows that elderly people with pets often live longer healthier lives. I was always glad to help.

Luke not only brightened up patients’ lives

Page 33: The eden magazine

but he brought relief to over-worked staff too. Nurses, doctors, aides, and thera-pists benefitted from Luke’s weekly visits.

Mary, the physical therapist, often asked if Luke could stop in for a few minutes when patient visits were done. Doctors and nurses welcomed Luke’s canine cure. Sometimes, Luke calmed agitated patients so medical staff could perform an examination or obtain a medical history. Everyone at the center loved Luke. On a chance encounter at a local dog bakery, I met Pam Gaber in the sum-mer of 2001. Founder and president of Gabriel’s Angels, it is a non-profit organization that tries to break the cy-cle of violence in bruised, battered, and at-risk children through healing pet thera-py. As a former social worker, I was well acquainted with the familial patterns in domestic violence and child abuse. I liked Gabriel’s Angels philosophy and signed up as a volunteer. Luke’s membership in Companion Animal Association of Arizo-na made him eligible for Gabriel’s Angels. Initially, I retained dual memberships. As a disabled person, I no longer worked so I had enough free time for two pet therapy visits. Luke had plenty of love and com-passion to share as well.

Gabriel’s Angels assigned us to an after-school program at a homeless shelter. Homeless children had their lives torn apart by poverty, parental unemployment, domestic violence, or divorce. Left behind were their friends, community connec-tions, classmates, extended family, neigh-

bors, and pets. Luke and I would follow Gabriel’s Angels’ philosophy and spread kindness, respect, dignity, and compas-sion to all living beings. Children who ab-sorb humane messages are more likely to be free from the shackles of violence. Luke bonded with seven-year-old Kev-in. Sandy-haired, blue-eyed and wheel-chair bound, Kevin’s bodily movements were spastic and his speech profoundly slurred. I presumed cerebral palsy. Luke sidled next to Kevin, making the little boy giggle. Despite staff worker’s assurances that Kevin couldn’t speak, I heard him say, “The dog” several times. One week, Kevin wasn’t around so I asked about the boy with CP.

“CP?” The staff worker shrugged. “His mother’s boyfriend beat the crap out of him.” As a toddler, Kevin fussed a lot. One day, Joe flew into a rage and pummeled Kevin with his fists. Joe went to prison but Kevin’s sentence was a lifetime of pro-found disability. Luke brought him brief moments of solace.

When I met ten-year-old Linda her moth-er served time for abusing her. Although Linda escaped severe physical damage like Kevin, she was emotionally shred-ded. Her mother also killed her dog. Her father, who assumed her care, recently lost his job then became homeless. Linda adored animals and talked to Luke as if he was her personal confidant. From her vacant stare, I often wondered how much we reached her. She was deeply troubled.

In our July issue read more about Luke and Debra story.
