Sometimes, words, messages just come to you, and I have thestrong belief that when you hear something so good, youcan’t keep it to yourself, but is your duty to share it. That’swhat happened to me this Holiday Season. In earlyNovember, I heard the following words, and I just knew I hadto share it with all of you. The words are simple, and strikeat the heart with a simplistic message that best defines thespirit of the season.

“I can't promise you a better life if you’re going tofollow Jesus. I can't promise you a Bentley; I can'tpromise you that you're going to get that promotion(maybe you will, God bless you if you do). But I canpromise you that your soul can transcend anysituation if you have given its control to the one whocreated it. You can't imprison my soul, you can't firemy soul, you can't “Instagram-comment” my soul.Once you realize that God has saved your soul, hedoesn't owe you another thing. If God never didanother thing in my life, Jesus rescuing my soul wasenough. There is peace in that.” - Carl Lentz

My brothers and sisters, there is power, peace, in the Beingwho breathed life into you. Your crown has been paid for.All you have to do is place it on your head (it’s been said).As God’s child, you are loved, for you were created in loveuniquely defined and architecturally designed for the purposeand benefit of this world.

Let the spirit of purity, peace, and joy that is celebrated atChristmas through Christ’s birth encourage you, in the midstof the hustle and bustle of the season, to be still and to knowthat he is God, and that in addition to being in the air, thesky, the wind, he also very much resides within everyheartbeat, every breath, every tear and every exaltation of joythat comes into your life in what every shape or form.

Over and over again, the God of Genesis through Revelationshas always been and will always be there. Remember “toseek and you shall find.” What better way is there to honorthis fountain of love than to actually live our lives tappinginto the very source of the divine which resides within youand I. Your soul has been saved, believe that to your verycore, and you will find the peace and grace and, in astrangely and unique way, start to experience earth as it is inheaven.

A veces, las palabras, los mensajes sólamente vienen a ti, ytengo la firme creencia de que cuando escuchas algo tanbueno, no puedes guardarlo solo para ti, y es tu debercompartirlo. Eso es lo que me pasó esta temporada navideña.A principios de noviembre, escuché las siguientes palabras,y yo sabía que tenía que compartirlo con todos ustedes. Que el espíritu de pureza, paz y alegría que se celebra enNavidad a través del nacimiento de Cristo nos aliente, enmedio del ajetreo de la estación, para estar quietos y saberque él es Dios, y que además de estar en el aire, en el cielo,él también reside mucho en cada latido del corazón, en cadaaliento, cada lágrima y cada exaltación de alegría que entraen tu vida en cada forma o aspecto.

Una y otra vez, el Dios del Génesis a través de lasRevelaciones siempre ha estado y siempre estará allí.Recuerda "buscar y encontrarás". ¿Qué mejor manera dehonrar esta fuente de amor que vivir nuestras vidasaprovechando de la fuente misma de lo divino que residedentro de ti y de mí? Tu alma ha sido salvada, cree paravuestro mismo corazon, y encontrarás la paz y la gracia y, deuna manera extraña y única, comenzarás a experimentar enla tierra como es en el cielo.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

Advent has always been a season of preparation. It’s thattime of the year when focus on getting ready for ourcelebrations of Christmas. We decorate our trees, hangour lights, bake our cookies; and prepare our gifts forfamily and friends. And, none of this is supposed to be

difficult or tedious. Christmas, and the Advent seasonthat precedes it aresupposed to be filled with nothing butjoy and hope. After all, this is “the most wonderful timeof the year.” At least, that’s what pop-culture icons likeAndy Williams would have us believe.

The only problem is that this widespread culturalexpectation is patently false. For far too many, theAdvent-Christmas season is anything but joyful. It’s atime of heightened anxieties, frustrated dreams, brokenrelationships, and unanticipated tragedies. The world’simperfections and perils don’t vanish just because theAdvent-Christmas season begins. Sometimes theybecome worse!

The history of Advent-Christmas is filled with badnews. Recent decades have brought us the Indonesiantsunami, the San Bernardino terrorist attack, and nowthe combined hurricane and earthquake in Nicaraguaand El Salvador.

This Advent in the United States, more than half amillion citizens will be celebratingthe season on thestreets. Families in cities and towns across this nationwill be mourning the loss of loved ones to sanctionedand unsanctioned gun violence. Tens of thousandsfleeing poverty and bloodshed in their home countrieswill be facing the prospect of being sent back to theterrors from which they fled. Millions who areunemployed will lack the resources to celebrateChristmas in any but the most minimal way. And,political, social and economic controversies willapparentlylead to unprecedented levels of public protest.Of course, none of this takes account of the innumerablepersonal tragedies that always affect people’s livesduring this “most wonderful time of year.”

¿La Época Más Maravillosa del Año?

El Adviento siempre ha sido una estación depreparación. Es la época del año cuando nos centramosen preparativos para nuestras celebraciones navideñas.Decoramos los árboles, colgamos las luces, horneamoslas galletas, y preparamos los regalos para familiares yamigos. Se supone que nada de estas cosas sea difícil otediosa. Se supone que la Navidad y la estación delAdviento que la precede se llenen con nada más quealegría y esperanza. Este Adviento en los Estados Unidos, más demediomillón de ciudadanos celebrarán la estación en lascalles. Familias en ciudades y pueblos a lo largo de estanación lamentarán la pérdida de seres queridos a laviolencia de armas sancionada y no sancionada. Docenasde miles de personas huyendo la pobreza y elderramamiento de sangre en sus países de origenenfrentarán la posibilidad de ser devueltas a los terroresde los cuales huyeron. Millones de personas que estándesempleadas solo tendrán los recursos para celebrar laNavidad en una manera muy minima. Y, parece como silas actuales controversias políticas, sociales yeconómicas nos llevarán a niveles sin precedentes deprotesta pública. Por supuesto, nada de esto toma encuenta las tragedias personales que siempre afectan lasvidas de la gente durante esta “época más maravillosa


None of this should come as any surprise. The notionthat the Advent-Christmas season should be a time ofunadulterated joy is a relatively recent historicaldevelopment. The biblical story of Mary’s pregnancyand Jesus’ birth wasn’t a story of happiness forhappiness’ sake. It was a story that took the world’stragedy very seriously. It was, after all, the story of apoor family traveling more than a hundred miles on footto pay exorbitantly unjust taxes to an oppressiveimperial government. To make matters even worse,Mary had gotten pregnant outside of the bounds of legalmarriage. This was bad news all the way around. Thebaby Jesus was born into the midst of this all-too-common human tragedy.

What makes the story miraculous is that Jesus’ birthunexpectedly brought hope that continues to inspire andtransform us today. God broke into the world throughhim to shine light into the midst of darkness, to bringhope into the midst of despair, to offer love in the midstof boundless fear, and to renew life in the midst ofdeath. As the gospel of John boldly declares: “The lightshines in the darkness and the darkness does notextinguishthe light.”

This is what makes Advent-Christmas relevant for ustoday. Set aside the Black-Friday sales, the happinesshype, and the endless celebrations. The Advent-Christmas season is not primarily for the prosperous andthe happy. It is for all of us who struggle to live our livesin the context of bad news. There is hope in the midst ofthe world’s tragedy. It may seem like a faint andflickering hope to those who cannot understand. But, tothose of us who have faith, it is the hope that willtransform our world: Immanuel – God with us – not insome ideal world of perfect joy, but in our world with allof its flaws and failings.

Whoever we are, may this Advent-Christmas seasonbring us the blessings of authentic hope. Amen.

Nada de esto debe tomarnos por sorpresa. La idea de quela estación del Adviento y de la Navidad debe ser unaépoca de felicidad absoluta es un desarrollo históricorelativamente reciente. La historia bíblica del embarazode María y el nacimiento de Jesús no era solamente unahistoria de la felicidad. Era una historia que tomó muyen serio la tragedia del mundo. Después de todo, era lahistoria de una familia pobre viajando más de cienmillas a pie para pagar impuestos extremadamenteinjustos a un gobierno imperial opresivo. Para empeorarlas cosas, María se había hecho embarazada fuera de loslímites del matrimonio legal. El niño Jesús nació enmedio de esta tragedia humana común.

Lo que hace milagrosa esta historia es que el nacimientode Jesús inesperadamente trajo la esperanza que sigueinspirándonos y transformándonos hasta el día de hoy.Dios entró en el mundo a través de él para brillar la luzen medio de la oscuridad, para traer la esperanza enmedio de la desesperación, para ofrecer el amor enmedio del miedo ilimitado, y para renovar la vida enmedio de la muerte. Como el evangelio de Juan declaracon audacia: “La luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y lastinieblas no la dominaron.”

Estoes lo que hace que el Adviento y la Navidad sonpertinentes para nosotros hoy. Pongan a un lado lasventas del Viernes Negro, el bombo sobre la felicidad,y las fiestas sin fin. La estación del Adviento y de laNavidad no existe principalmente para el beneficio delos prósperos y los felices. Ella existe para el beneficiode todos nosotros que luchan para vivir nuestras vidasen el contexto de malas noticias. Hay esperanza enmedio de la tragedia del mundo. Pueda parecer comouna esperanza tenue y vacilante para aquellos denosotros que no comprenden. Sin embargo, paraaquellos de nosotros que tengan fe, ella es la esperanzaque transformará nuestro mundo: Emanuel – Dios connosotros – no en un mundo ideal de felicidad perfecta,sino en nuestro mundo con todos sus defectos y faltas.

Quienquiera que seamos, que esta estación del Advientoy de la Navidad nos traiga las bendiciones de laesperanza auténtica. Amén.

We give thanks to God for taking special care of ourPastor, Rev. FRANK WULF, last Saturday evening,November 12, 2016. Someone seemed to havewhispered to him to open his bedroom windows thatnight. He always closed his bedroom windows beforegoing to bed, but this time, he listened to that unknownvoice in his head. He fell asleep almost immediately, butat around 1 or 2 in the morning, he felt the need to usethe bathroom, so he got out of bed to go there. As soonas he opened the door of his bedroom, he smelled a verystrong odor of gas coming into his bedroom from theinside of the house. He immediately called the gascompany, and they arrived almost at once. They foundwhere the gas line was leaking and soon everything wasunder control. He was assured by the gas companypeople that they would be back the next day topermanently fix the problem. Everything is okay now atthe Parsonage.

Join us on Friday, December 2 for the 29th Annual AIDsPosada! The procession starts at 6:00 at the HollywoodSunset Free Clinic (3324 W. Sunset Blvd) and ends atour church. A light dinner of pozole soup will be served

Damos gracias a Dios por tomando cuidado especial denuestro Pastor, el Rev. FRANK WULF, la noche delpasado Sabado, 12 de Noviembre de 2016. Parece quealguien habia murmurado a el que abra las ventanas desu cuarto aquella noche. El siempre cierra las ventanasde su cuarto antes de dormir, pero aquella vez, el oyo ladesconocida voz en su mente. Se dormió casiinmediatamente, pero entre la 1 o 2 de la madrugada, sesentia necesidad de ir al baño, pues se paró de la camapara ir alli. Al abrir la puerta de su cuarto, se olíafuertemente el olor de gas entrando en su cuarto desdeel interior de la casa. Inmediatamente, el llamó lacompania de gas, y ellos llegaron muy pronto. Seencontraron donde el gas estaba saliendo, y pronto todoestaba bajo control. Ellos aseguraron al Pastor que vanaregresar el proximo dia para permanentemente arreglarel problema. Todo esta bien ahora en la Casa Pastoral.

The Echo Park Community Holiday Parade will be heldon Saturday, December 10. This will be our 3rdconsecutive year in the parade! For more information,contact Lisa Palombi, who is coordinating with theorganizers of the Parade. We will need at least threepeople to carry our Church banner.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The technician who installed our new audio system for ourchurch sanctuary suggested that we construct a sliding boardfor our mixer/amplifier to avoid dragging it in and out of itsstorage place. LaDell Stapp volunteered to cut this board andput it on rollers much the same way many file cabinetdrawers and kitchen drawers slide in and out. After muchmeasuring, cutting, and attaching the sliding rails, we nowhave a wonderful sliding board that will eliminate much wearand tear on our mixer/amplifier. Many thanks, LaDell, forthis much-needed improvement.

Due to the ground movement as a building settles in itslocation, the southwest corner of our church is sinking. Themetal gates leading to Alvarado Street were not openingproperly, in fact one of the gates was frozen and could not beopened without a prybar. The problem is now solved asSherman McClellan used his grinder to shave off the metalat the top of the gate so both gates are opened freely now.

On October 26, LaDell Stapp measured the board fence at thesouth end of our Parsonage to determine the wood andhardware needed to complete this project. LaDell went toHome Depot and purchased the necessary supplies so that weare now ready to build the new fence.

Many thanks to Mark Phillips for repairing the concretecrack at the base of our Reservoir Street ramp. The crack waslarge enough to cause someone to trip and fall, but it is nowcompletely repaired.

There were five light bulbs in the sanctuary that were burnedout and needed to be replaced. Many thanks to ShermanMcClellan for giving three hours of his November 19Saturday morning to climb into the church attic to drop thelighting fixtures so that the bulbs could be replaced. This isa physical, demanding, dirty job. Thank you, Sherman, formaking the lighting in our sanctuary much brighter for theholiday season.

This is an update on the backyard fence being constructed atour Parsonage. LaDell Stapp gave another four hours of workto install the stringers where the upright boards will beattached. Thanks so much to LaDell who is engineering andbuilding this board fence. We hope to have the fencecompleted in the very near future.

Street side was cracked and finally broke. Settling andvibrations from the truck traffic on Alvarado Street may havecaused this to happen. Even with a tall ladder, this is a verydifficult job. Thanks to Mark Phillips who put a piece ofglass on the inside to keep the rain out as a temporary fix.We will have to come up with a way to repair this window assoon as possible.

My prayer is that everyone had a very blessed ThanksgivingDay. We are all so blessed that, even as we go through ourparticular trials and tribulations, we still have so much to bethankful for. November has been a very busy month - fromAll Saints Sunday to ReconcilingSunday. And as we beginthe Advent Season, it is time to prepare our hearts for thecoming of Christ. It occurred to me how appropriate it was tohave Reconciling Sunday just before Advent Season.

The United Methodist Women thank all those whoparticipated in “Operation Christmas Child.” We filled 46shoeboxes to be sent to children all over the world. I alsoheard that more boxes were sent from Redlands. We givepraise to God for this wonderfulopportunity to serve God andour neighbors.

Our All-Church Christmas Party will be held on December18 after the morning English Worship Service. We want tomake this a truly enjoyable event and are asking for theparticipation of everyone. There will be Christmas songssang, poems read, short plays presented, AND, ourtraditional “12Days of Christmas” Chorale Ensemble. We areasking for any volunteers who would like to help make thisa blessed time for everyone. There will also be small gifts forthe children, so please invite your neighbors and friends. Inlieu of “exchanging gifts,” we will be taking up a collectionto be given to one of our mission projects.

Our UMW December 11 meeting will be held specifically tofinalize our plans. We plan on setting up and decorating onSaturday, December 17.

Mi oración es que todos hayan tenido un bendito Dia deAcción de Gracias. Todos somos tan bendecidos que, inclusoa medida que pasamos por nuestras pruebas y tribulacionesparticulares, todavía tenemos porqué estar muy agradecidos.Noviembre ha sido un mes muy ocupado - desde el Domingode Todos los Santos hasta el Domingo de Reconciliación. Yal comenzar la Época de Adviento, es tiempo de prepararnuestros corazones para la venida de Cristo. Se me ocurrióque lo apropiado era tener el Domingo de Reconciliaciónjusto antes de la Temporada del Adviento.

Las Mujeres Metodistas Unidas agradecen a todos los queparticiparon en la “Operación Niño de Navidad.” Llenamos46 cajas de zapatos para ser enviadas a niños de todo elmundo. También escuché que se enviaron más cajas deRedlands. Alabamos a Dios por esta maravillosa oportunidadde servir a Dios y a nuestros vecinos.

Nuestra Fiesta de Navidad de toda la Iglesia se llevará a caboel 18 de Diciembre después del Servicio de la mañana deAdoración en Inglés.
