THE ECHO OCT. - DEC. 2017
Greetings fellow 1504 Knights,
Autumn greetings to all my Council
1504 brothers, your families, our
friends and community partners. It
is hard to believe the 2017 Fall
Equinox is now upon us. I hope you
experienced a wonderful summer
and some well-deserved holidays.
We celebrated our 107th Anniver-
sary as a Chartered Council on Au-
gust 10th. W e have to be one of the
oldest, if not the oldest, continually
operating community service
groups in Waterloo Region. This is
something we should all be very
proud of. When you have a few
minutes I invite you to examine the
pages of this Echo Newsletter to
discover the many wonderful activi-
ties our Council has and is current-
ly undertaking. I think you will
agree that we are living up to our
Knightly vows of charity, unity, fra-
ternity and patriotism.
In Late September, we colluded
with our two Waterloo Universities
and Conestoga College with a vi-
sion and undertaking that I know
will spark further growth in our
Order while gaining yet another
valuable community partner with
our local postsecondary institu-
tions. As a result of an information
session and recruit interviewing on
September 17th students from
these schools, both male and female
(which is supported by our Order)
agreed to form a Parish Round Ta-
ble at one of our local Churches. In
addition, several male students
completed form 100 admittance ap-
plications and will be joining our
various District 35 Councils. In
fact, on September 24th five 1504
applicants took their Admissions
(1st) Degree. Eventually we may
see these Universities and the Col-
lege form their own independent
Council which is a very positive
thought. In the meantime, welcome
to our latest new members. My
hope is that you will jump right in
with both feet and experience the
humbling pride and satisfaction
you get by doing good works in our
community!
Until the January edition of this
iconic Echo, I wish each of you the
very best. Enjoy all the sites, smells
and tastes our Ontario Autumn has
to offer and come December, re-
member to keep Christ in Christ-
mas!
Warmest regards,
Dave Obermeyer,
Grand Knight

Dave
Obermeyer GRAND KNIGHT
Greetings fellow Knights and families,
I trust that you had a good summer! We have turned the corner into another Autumn
and a school year that is well underway. Summer is wonderful, but each of the four sea-
sons brings its own charm to our beautiful country.
The Fall is a glorious finality of the growing season. The beautiful colours of the trees
remind us that even as we know that nature is preparing for the dormancy of Winter, we
can and should celebrate the growth and abundance of the summer days of our lives. It is
no wonder that our national Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated at this time of year – wrapping up the harvest with
joy and celebration.
The gift of education and of our educational institutions should also be recognized and celebrated both at the begin-
ning of the school year and throughout the year in various ways. There is so much good knowledge and faith to be
shared with each other; especially our youth. And there is a fair share of false teaching and bad faith out there as
well.
As I write these few paragraphs, tomorrow is September 23rd. If you are a star gazer, you know that the tradition-
al constellations, the planets, the sun and the moon change position in the sky throughout the year from our terres-
trial perspective.
The constellation Virgo perpetually lies next to Leo. With this heavenly vision on the 23rd is included three of the
planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars which have ‘wandered,’ as they have in the past, into Leo’s vicinity. The sun is
also located in this picture near the head of Virgo with the moon at her feet. This is a daytime event so only the
sun in its brightness is visible. Some are interpreting this as the sign of Revelation 12, of the Virgin (Virgo)
crowned with twelve stars (Leo and the three planets) poised to give birth. Is September 23rd 2017 the fulfillment
of Revelation? Is it a great sign of God’s choosing to conclude history with condemnation or are we to look each day
to the sign of our Salvation – the Cross? We can choose to run after false knowledge and bad faith or we can con-
tinue to grow in knowledge and good faith as we are called to do and as our Catholic educational institutions con-
tinue to witness to and provide.
I have met far too many Catholics who follow false prophecies; think the world is 6000 years old, that evolution is a
principle that offends God’s creative action and that science and religion are not complimentary.
Church teaching has constantly upheld the need and practise of both faith and reason. Both faith and reason; reli-
gion and science, inform and uphold each other. God asks us to use both our head and heart, united together, in
following his will and serving each other.
As Knights of Columbus, may we continue to serve the church with intelligent faith.
Blessings,
Fr. Larry Council 1504 Chaplain

OCT. - DEC. 2017 THE ECHO PAGE 3
Greetings Brother Knights,
The Knights of Columbus Bowling
League already started their new
season. That means only one thing
— the summer is gone.
We had slow down for the summer.
That does not mean we did not have
a productive time, just we were in
summer gear.
I was off work because of illness for a
few months a couple of years ago.
Thanks to Past Grand Knight Brian
Schmalz who asked me to go in the
Hospital with Mike and then Piper to
visit the kids. I went in many times
since then and have to confess that I
find helping kids who are in trouble
is the most rewarding in our many
activities in our Order. Those kids in
the hospital affect a huge soft spot in
my heart. For me the biggest reward
was when we left a sick kid’s room
seeing him or her smiling.
I have a great respect and am greatly
thankful to Mike and Dudley, Wayne,
Mario, Brian Schmalz and Brian
Hughes for their tireless dedication
to visiting those little and bigger kids
through the summer and putting
smiles on their faces.
Our other program to help kids is the
K of C Memorial Golf Tournament.
Thanks to a few Past Grand Knights
and their helpers we give a chance to
some child to get his or her dream
come true.
We are looking forward for the next
few months. We have Brother
Knights under the leadership of PGK
Brian Hughes making the Christmas
decorations and Nativity Scenes.
The second annual Trivia Challenge
is in full speed and it looks like it will
be more successful than last year. Br.
Mac is still looking for sponsors.
Br. Gary Megaffin is doing a good job
updating our members with what we
do week to week. I hope we see some
of our Brothers and families at some
of these events.
May the Lord our God keep us
healthy and safe.
Vivat Jesus,
DGK Mike Szabo

A Gala Affair
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – SEPTEMBER 15, 2017
The Waterloo Regional Chil-
dren’s Safety Village celebrat-
ed its Silver 25th Anniversary
September 14 with the Kitche-
ner Knights of Columbus and
many of the community’s high-
profile leaders enjoying a Gala
Dinner at the St. George Ban-
quet Hall in Waterloo. Built on
a dream that police could edu-
cate up to 10,000 children a
year on how to be safe, today
25 years later, the village
serves 22,000 elementary stu-
dents a year. The Village's
message started with bike and
road safety and in 1996 fire
safety was introduced. The fire protection education in-
cludes practicing home safety plans, stressing the im-
portance of working smoke alarms, learning about kitchen
hazards and participating in a mock 911 call. The Kitchener
Knights of Columbus was well represented with GK Dave
Obermeyer, Lady Knight Birgit, DGK Mike Szabo and Lady
Knight Anna attending this who’s who social affair. Proving
to benefit Council 1504, it was an evening of networking
with many of the area’s community partners while creating
new relationships which will help highlight our future K of C
initiatives.

Brother Dan Dineen Award of Distinction Bestowed
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – JUNE 20, 2017
The late Brother Dan Dineen was a tireless pro-
moter and supporter of the Kitchener Knights of
Columbus, Council 1504. For over 40 years Broth-
er Dan made it his passion to visit his Brother
Knights who were infirmed either in hospital or at
home. Dan made it a point to always take ad-
vantage of the opportunity to recruit a new mem-
ber for the Knights. His devotion to the Knights of
Columbus was unsurpassed. It is with that fer-
vent dedication that Council 1504 instituted the
Brother Dan Dineen Award of Distinction. The
Award is to recognize a member of Council 1504
who, while not holding any elected position, faith-
fully supports Council 1504 and his Brother
Knights when help is called upon. The first win-
ner of the award is Brother Fernando Melo. Fer-
nando unfailingly leads The Rosary For The Un-
born, attends K of C Prayer Services for a deceased
Brother, can be seen displaying his carpentry
skills constructing Nativity Scenes. It is assured
that Brother Fernando is always front and centre supporting the specialized charitable events that Council 1504
produces. Brother Fernando Melo well-deserved winner of the first Brother Dan Dineen Award of Distinction.

“We Have Photons!”
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – AUGUST 10, 2017 BY GARY MEGAFFIN
The Kitchener Knights of Columbus are losing a dedi-cated and well-respected member of Council 1504. Returning to his hometown, Brother Chris Pugh has accepted a teaching position for one year at Brandon University starting September 1st. Chris was born in Brandon, Manitoba and completed a Bachelor of Sci-ence degree with a major in Physics and minors in Math and Computer Science at Brandon University. He recently completed his PhD in Physics, Quantum Information, at the University of Waterloo performing an exciting demonstration. By his own admission, Chris says a commercial flight can make him a bit queasy. But in his PhD quest, on a clear night last September, he was strapped into a Twin Otter with its side door removed so he could monitor a telescope that was pointed down toward the darkened Eastern On-tario rural landscape. Too busy to be scared, he hoped it would capture particles of laser light called photons fired up at the plane. The experiment worked beauti-fully, colleagues operating the laser from an airstrip near Smiths Falls, heard Chris’ excited cry of “We have photons!” over an air-to-ground radio. Success! The achievements obtained by Chris Pugh are just a prelude of what the future holds for the dedicated Fourth Degree member of the Kitchener Knights of Columbus, Council 1504 and a Past Faithful Naviga-tor of the Father Funcken Assembly. He will remain at the University for one year before potentially enter-ing the seminary. Chris came to Council 1504 a few years back and has made an indelible mark with his unique and diverse contributions that remain today and will continue to be part of the Kitchener K of C. It can be said; the membership is proud to know Brother Chris wishing him God speed and we’re looking forward to his return visit as Father Chris Pugh.
Bon Voyage Brother Chris
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – AUGUST 15, 2017
A well-attended General Meeting on Tuesday, August 15 heard Brother Chris Pugh thank everyone who was instrumental in supporting his work with the Kitche-ner Knights of Columbus. Before departing on his new venture as a teacher at the Brandon University, Chris was honoured with the Brother Dan Dineen Award of Distinction for his contributions to Council 1504. Five years ago, Chris came to Council 1504, ascended to the Fourth Degree and then Faithful Navigator of the Fa-ther Funcken Assembly. Inspired by his Christian attitude, Chris inaugurated several unique and inno-vative Council events that were regularly attended. Attaining his PhD in Physics, Chris will be at the Brandon University for a year then will consider en-tering the seminary. Before the meeting concluded, Chris was presented with special gifts of two religious sculptures that were subsequently blessed by Father Larry. After the meeting, many of the members en-joyed a special ‘bon voyage’ cake wishing Brother Chris Godspeed.

Fore! KITCHENER, ONTARIO – AUGUST 26, 2017
The weather was gangbusters as the 2017 K of
C Annual Memorial Golf Tournament got un-
derway. 52 Golfers were welcomed at the
Grand Valley Golf and Country Club Saturday,
August 26 under sunny skies with the top four-
some of Pat McGrath, Brad Olinski, Brian
McGrath and Dave Jaeger taking the honours.
The men’s longest drive was made by Doug
George, with three ladies tying. Closest to the
pin was Jamie Zimmerman and supervising the
Putting Contest, where four golfers tied, was
Ann Boehm the Kitchener and area Co-
ordinator of The Children’s Wish Foundation.
Hats off to Brothers Brian Schmalz, Jim
Padgett and Pat McGrath for their efforts in
coordinating and presenting the event. A sump-
tuous rolled rib and roast beef dinner was en-
joyed by all and The Children’s Wish Founda-
tion will be receiving a very generous donation
from Council 1504 which made the day the suc-
cess it was.

Great Day at the K of C Centre
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – JUNE 24, 2107
Couldn’t be beat! It was perfect weather for the annual K of C Family Appreciation Day, Saturday, June 24 at
the K of C Centre on Guelph Street. MC and GK Dave Obermeyer welcomed over 100 family and friends to a full
day of food, fun and frolic that began at 2:00 pm. It was a jam-packed day that featured the ever-popular Brave
Knight Bouncy Castle, fun-filled Dunk Tank and a display presented by the Region of Waterloo Paramedic Ser-
vices. Vesta, the clown, demonstrated her skill at making balloon animals and her artistic ability of face-painting.
The active Family Appreciation Day was topped of with Chef Wayne Buchholtz doing his wonders with food at the
BBQ. Organizer Mike Van Lammeren and his hard-working crew of several dedicated volunteers were responsible
to make the event the success it was. Sean and Amanda Meaney prepared the food, Mike and Max Salman aided
by Francis Du set up and handled the registration desk while Francis was doing double-duty handing out Freezies
to the kids. A big thank you to Pillars and Lays food companies for their generous donations. A good time was had
by all and looking forward to next year’s event.
