THE ECHO JULY - SEPT. 2019
Brother Knights,
Another 3 months have passed since
our last Echo, we are enjoying one of
the nicest days in this year (as I write
this article), and one of the challenges
of my duties as a Grand Knight is to
write the article for the Echo.
Br. Murray Strauss and Br. Tim Ru-
mig received their 2nd Degree. Br.
Paul O’Brien and Br. Adan Suarez
received their 3rd Degree.
I have to say a BIG THANKS and
congratulate the members of the Cor-
poration. They have done a wonderful
job renovating the Columbus Centre.
All of the corporation members spend
countless hours there. I think all the
brothers who were involved with the
restoration would agree with me that
PGK Brian Schmalz and Br. Kevin
Schmalz deserve a special thanks for
their dedication and hard work with
all they have done with this project.
On the last weekend of April, we at-
tended the State Convention. For the
next two years David Peters will be
the State Deputy.
In June we honoured our (Kitchener)
Clergy with a BBQ dinner in our
newly renovated house.
With all the good things we do some-
times we have to face problems. DGK
Gary Megaffin who is also our PR/
Media rep who organizes the Echo
and the website is stepping down
from his position. Thank you, Br
Gary, for your dedicated job. I hope
you still will help the Council with
your experience
and knowledge.
Now we are in need
of finding some vol-
unteers who will
agree to fill the gap
and organize these important parts of
our Council. Any brother or brothers
who would like to take on these re-
sponsibilities please contact me. At
our last executive meeting we agreed
it would be a great idea if some of our
ladies could help in this matter. I am
sure that we will solve this problem.
In May we held the election for next
fraternal year’s executive officers. I
am happy to announce that all posi-
tions are filled. To the incoming Exec-
utive, my advice is to support the of-
fice to which you were elected and
learn about your new role. I suggest
there will be much to learn with chal-
lenges that will be greatly outshined
by many successes. With the addi-
tion of several new members, I en-
courage you to continue to attend our
monthly General Meetings; and we
welcome those whom we haven’t seen
for a while.
I wish all of our members and their
families a Peaceful Summer.
God Bless and Vivat Jesus,
Mike Szabo

Dear Brother Knights and Families,
Recently, the media reported (from
many angles) the decision of our Ho-
ly Father Francis, in union with the
bishops of Italy, to change the word-
ing of the Our Father in the Italian
Roman Missal.
The Catholic News Agency reported;
“The newly-approved Messale Roma-
no will translate the penultimate
line of the Our Father (ne nos in-
dúcas in tentatiónem {latin}) (lead us
not into temptation) as “non abban-
donarci alla tentazione” (do not
abandon us to temptation). The ex-
isting version had translated it as
“non ci indurre in tentazione” (lead
us not into temptation). This change
IS NOT taking place in the English
speaking church at this time.
Among other reasons, Pope Francis
has sited multiple times that our
heavenly Father is not one to lead us
into temptation as some type of ma-
nipulative test but indeed one who
helps us through grace to resist and
steer clear of sin.
In our common English translation
of the Our Father we have used,
‘lead us not into temptation’ for
many years. It is not wrong, but at
this time in the history of the church
Pope Francis is emphasizing God’s
continued Presence and Fatherly
Providence and care for us. The
prayer guides us as children of God
to trust the Father by asking His
help. ‘Lead us not’ makes us ask
God to lead us as disciples; ‘do not
abandon us’, makes us ask for God’s
fatherly, caring, and protecting pres-
ence.
In our lives today, with so many frac-
tured families and broken relation-
ships, we need a renewed sense of
faithful presence and commit-
ment. Our Heavenly Father has al-
ways been faithful in his relationship
with us – always caring; always
providing; always protecting us. We
don’t want to take our Father for
granted however! We want to ask
for His
care and
thank Him
for his
Love for us
and all his
creation. Pope Francis is renewing
our relationship to God by having us
simply ask for God’s Fatherly Pres-
ence.
To pray - ‘Remain with us Father
and do not abandon us especially in
the face of evil and temptation’, pro-
foundly declares how much we yearn
for and need our Father’s care in our
lives.
This summer, may we be encouraged
to live with our Father, wherever we
may be, by praying each day for His
protective reign in our lives, thank-
ing Him for his fatherly care.
God bless,
Fr. Larry Parent

Brother Knights,
Time to put the snowblower away and
gas up the lawnmower as the summer
sun greens up the landscape. This
time of year is most welcomed as vaca-
tion plans are in full swing. It’s al-
ways gratifying to see the accomplish-
ments attained by the members’ dedi-
cation and hard work as Council con-
tinued with several community events.
Niagara Falls was the scene of the
State Convention in April capped off
with a 4th Degree Investiture.
The weatherman cooperated and held
off the rain as the Kitchener Knights of
Columbus held their 2019 Great Big
Spring Clean-up, Saturday May 4th at
the parking lot of St. Anthony Daniel
Church. Recycled electronics and the
Shred-All truck highlighted the day as
Food Bank cash and food donations
were received well over expectations.
This enables Council 1504 to continue
its charitable works.
In May the Rose Sunday right-to-life
campaign was active in several parish-
es accepting donations for Pro-Life
causes in the Region.
It is encouraging to see new faces
standing for positions on the executive
of Council 1504. Elections were held
and congratulations go to the new ad-
ministration: Grand Knight, Mike
Szabo; Deputy Grand Knight: Hank
Helmond; Chancellor, Mike Van Lam-
meren; Advocate, Paul O’Brien; War-
den, Mark Richards; Inside Guard,
Chris Detzler; Outside Guard, Murray
Strauss; Recorder, Jonathan Molloy;
and Trustee, Wayne Curry.
Due to increasing obligations, it is bit-
tersweet that I must relinquish my
position of
Deputy Grand
Knight, but the
future of a
strong Council
is on the hori-
zon. I want to
recognize the support of member
Knights who aided in accomplishing
my tasks as DGK. It is my wish that
your plans to enjoy summer activities
will be accomplished safely followed by
an eager return in the fall to support
our K of C causes.
Mother Nature is the star of the sum-
mer show, knows what we look for,
knows to her we owe the sunshiny hap-
py days, laying on a chaise, burning
the crap out of our ears and our nose!

The 2019 K of C Great Spring Cleanup Monday, May 6, 2019
KITCHENER — The weatherman cooperated and held off the rain as the Kitchener Knights of Columbus 2019 Great Big Spring Clean-up was organized on Saturday, May 4th at the St. Anthony Daniel parking lot at Ottawa and Franklin. The lineup began at 8:00am and was steady till noon. Those who visited the site left a great deal of unwanted electronic waste and scrap metal to be recycled. The Shred All truck was active accepting total Food Bank cash donations of $1,671, well over expectations while food donations topped over 600 pounds. It was noted that there were many repeat customers who marked this event on their calendar. Another observation determined the Food Bank donations continued to grow. The success of this year’s Big Spring Cleanup can be attributed to those dedicated Brother Knights who helped. This enables Council 1504
to continue its charitable works. ■
The lineup begins a busy day at the Knights of Columbus 2019 Big
Spring Cleanup at the St. Anthony Daniel’s parking lot.
The K of C Spring Cleanup “brain-trust” organizing the activities at St. Anthony Daniel’s parking lot while PGK Dave Obermeyer checks to see if he can scrounge anything of value that was donated. Brothers Tim Ferguson and Terry Molloy try to determine what it is they are looking at,
while Mike Detzler attempts to look busy.
While the Knights organize donations, another supporter of the K of C
Big Spring Cleanup leaves more material for recycling. The “wiring crew” in their search for the end of the line!

The 50th Anniversary Flag of Special Olympics
Ontario raised at Police Headquarters
KITCHENER — A cool but sunny day at Police Headquarters on March 25th greeted ath-
letes, a 4th Degree K of C Honour Guard and members of the Waterloo Regional Police
force. Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin welcomed competitors and guests
at the Special Olympics 50th Anniversary Flag Raising. With support from the Knights
of Columbus, the Special Olympics are celebrating their 50th Anniversary with festivi-
ties that have been planned around the world from July 2018 to June 2019. Young
athletes came from across the USA and Canada to compete in the first International
Special Olympics Summer Games, held July 20, 1968, at Soldier Field in Chicago. Near-
ly 50 years later, today’s Special Olympics movement reaches more than 5 million ath-
letes with intellectual disabilities in 170 countries. We have seen how sport changes
everything in the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It shifts the
focus from disability to ability. Children, youth and adults, who participate in Special
Olympics exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm. ■
