Folk, punk, gospel and country, all melded into one. The band has released two albums and several EP’s in just over a year, not to mention two hundred odd shows. Having been compared to Bob Dylan, Springsteen and Townes Van Zandt, the bands members vary, but centre around the two songwriters - Jess Shanks, bringing mandolin bass, guitar and harmonica to the stage and Adam McGrath who boasts mandolin, bass, guitar and harmonica.

“We have one job, that is to play like our lives depend on it, If you’re there to see us play then we owe you one, not the other way around!” says Adam. The hardworking band tours practically all year round, their last album ‘Hope and Wire’ reaching #1 on the iTunes country chart just last year. They’ve performed all over and embraced each show like it’s their last also having toured with the likes of Steve Earle and Jimmy Barnes.

Performing alongside The Eastern, will be the ever-popular Muswellbrook country band ‘The Dennis Boys Band’ . Over twenty years in the making, the family band joined officially in 2006, rising fast into the modern music world with fresh and authentic country, roots and alternative tunes.

The Railway Hotel will see both take to the stage and beer garden area at 2pm on Sunday the 28 April. The hotel will provide great vibes, spit roast, games room for children and combined with the top entertainment - a great atmosphere. So be sure to check out both of the bands or even catch The Eastern at the Gumball Festival, tickets still available at their website, www.thegumball.com.au

Inaugural Mountain Bike Race at James EstateMore than two hundred mountain bikers are expected to race at James Estate in the Upper Hunter Valley at Baerami. The event will be the second in the five-race SHIMANO Mountain Bike Grand Prix Series, which offers four and seven hour challenges for solo and team riders.James Estate was recently awarded the title “Star Cellar Door and Best Additional Experience” by the Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine, which is a credit to the efforts of its General Manager and winemaker Graeme Scott.

“Mountain biking is a great passion of mine and I’ve been building trails on the property for the past four years and we’ve had many

visitors on two wheels to the Cellar Door over the past few weeks since opening the trails to the public”, says Graeme Scott who was able to secure an event by race organiser Rocky Trail Entertainment for James Estate. They will host one of their SHIMANO Mountain Bike Grand Prix endurance series races at the winery on 20 April.

Every race participant will be treated to a bottle of James Estate Wine and all visitors and spectators will be treated to culinary treats from the region with tastings by Baerami Olives and Hunter Belle Cheeses. Free kids races and activities will keep young visitors busy and entry for spectators is free. The James Estate cellar door will be open all day.

Bill Howey - Husband, Father, Veterinarian, Writer, Community ManBy Sophie Fitzgerald

Many community members would be quite familiar with the name, Bill Howey, particularly the citizens of Scone. Having had a very successful career and intriguing life, the delightful British character is as busy as ever, post-retirement.

Bill was born in Northumberland, England in 1942. His father worked on a farm formed over many generations, together with his mother, an Irish Lady who had three children, Bill being the second.

When asked what influenced him to come to Australia Bill explained, “I read about the ‘Hill’ at the Sydney Cricket Ground! I thought I should go there and I did!”

He began his career in England as a vet before he secured a job in Australia, migrating in 1967 as a ‘Ten Pound Pom’ fitting in with the booming industry in Australia. Here, Bill gained additional diplomas and degrees in education, veterinary science and medicine as well becoming a member to several colleges and associations, publishing articles and working throughout the Hunter Valley.

Today he can proudly say he has worked in the rural veterinarian practice for over thirty years, having been educated and trained in the horse industry with tertiary educations and experience through beef cattle farming, racing and thoroughbred breeding.

When asked what he missed most from the veterinarian world, he said, “The people on the studs, definitely, the close cooperation with them through work, they become some

of your closest friends.”

During his career in Scone he met his wife, Sarah. Together they have a daughter and son, both leading just as successful lives as their parents. Kirsty, 35 years of age is a Civil Rights Lawyer in Darwin and son Hugh, 34 years old, taught in Africa for two years and is now a teacher in Tamworth. Both are pursuing their goals, dreams and ambitions.

Despite retiring Bill is still quite the busy man, actively contributing to the community of Scone through many groups and associations. Just last week he released the latest of several historical books ‘Geraldton’. But through all this he manages to find time for what he enjoys most, spending time with family and friends, being a grandfather while indulging in his most significant past time - reading.

Bill Howey has certainly contributed largely to Scone and the Upper Hunter in general. He is an inspiring man who has shared his knowledge and wisdom with many and continues to do so today - a valued community member. Bill’s new book is available from ‘Hunt A Book’ in Scone, so be sure to grab a copy.

creative artsConservatorium Student Turned TeacherBy Sophie Fitzgerald

Taking up woodwind instruments at a young age, former student Aaron Rothemund is now teaching at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music. Passing on his knowledge to other youths, where he once learnt flute and clarinet.

As a young boy, Aaron learnt to play the clarinet after watching in awe as his primary school band performed at assemblies and events. Switching to flute in High School, he continued to grow along with his musical capabilities, giving thanks to teachers Janelle French, Alison Murphy, Sally Walker and James Kortum.

By 2011 he had completed his Bachelor Music Degree and Honours Degree in French music. Throughout his career, he has performed alongside many greats including internationally recognised flautists and other musicians such as Walter Auer, Rein de Reede, Anthea Scott-Mitchell and many more. He has also joined many choirs and orchestras such as the University of Newcastle Symphony and Wind Orchestras and Orchestra Nova. As well as having worked with many

renowned musicians, played for many Opera productions and co-founded Newcastle’s Epique Flute Quartet.

When asked what the highlight of his career so far is, Aaron explained, “A definite highlight of my performing career was when I’ve performed as a soloist with orchestras. It’s quite and amazing feeling and an incredible opportunity to be asked to showcase your performing skills.”

Aaron now teaches students of all ages at the conservatorium, sharing his knowledge and skills of clarinet, flute and saxophone. “My favourite part of teaching is watching my students grow and learn, and helping them to achieve. I also love being able to share my passion of music and performing with my students.”

The talented musician has had a very successful career to date, with no doubt plenty more to come. In the meantime he is a huge asset to the conservatorium, encouraging and helping students with their musical ambitions.

For enquiries on lessons with Aaron or other teachers at the conservatorium, be sure to call on 65414888 or enquire on their website www.uhcm.com.au

Queens of Comedy at the King of the RangesBy Laura Sykes

It’s that time of year again folks! Get ready to laugh your socks off at this year’s King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bushman’s Festival when comedian and musician Clair Hayes teams up with the hilarious Carol Heuchan, bush poet extraordinaire.

With a lifetime of entertaining crowds between them, the duo often team up to deliver an unforgettably funny show, using their individual talents to have you splitting stiches. Carol, already a big name in the horse industry, is now one of the country’s foremost writers and performers, with a stack of awards and accolades already neatly tucked away under her belt. Her first book of bush poetry, ‘Horseplay’, was published in 2003 and Carol has never looked back, while Clair also has an impressive haul of awards to her name, and an equally impressive range of musical instruments. Well versed in playing guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, tin whistle, bodrhan and harmonica, as well as singing, Clair has a talent for telling a story with her music and getting audiences laughing along the way.

Carol and Clair will be performing throughout the three days of the Challenge and will also be involved in poetry workshops for juniors. To find out more about their performances or the workshops, head on over to the website, at www.kingoftheranges.com.au/index.html

10 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - April 20 to April 26, 2013

Commencing at 11:30am this event will showcase the proposed new Aged Care Facility for the Upper Hunter, to be known as Strathearn House, with support from the local community sought to bring this significant project forward. Dr W.E.J. Paradice will be addressing the attendees at 12 noon.

Strathearn Village Ltd is a community based organisation - owned by the community and responding to the needs of the Upper Hunter Community since 1972. Strathearn is a Not for Profit organisation, limited by guarantee, overseen by a voluntary board drawn from the local community.

The Capital Campaign has been established with the sale goal of raising funds for Stage One of Strathearn House under a Capital Campaign Committee whose members are; Dr W.E.J. Paradice AM, Bill Howey, Sarah Howey, Gordon Halliday, Ron Martin, Matt Downie (CEO - Strathearn)

The purpose of the Campaign is to raise $5M towards the cost to construct Stage One of Strathearn House. Strathearn House is a new development to provide the next generation of aged care for the Scone and Upper Hunter Community.

The target has been set to help close the gap in funding which exists between Federal Government assistance ($15M loan) and Strathearn’s resources with current capital reserves.

The campaign already holds almost $500,000 from donations already made. Upper Hunter Council has provided ‘in-kind’ support through waiving development application fees.

Just as happened forty years ago, funding

Horse Festival News UpdateOnly two weeks to go until the start of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival for 2013. All preparations are in place for the King of the Ranges Challenge and Bush Festival which will run over the first weekend. Don’t miss the opportunity to see some of the best stockmen and women competing in cross country jumping, wild horse catch and buckjump. There will also be the inaugural King of the Ranges Ute Muster! Some brilliant short stories and poems have been entered by local primary school students in the Wild Brumby Competition. All entries will be on display at the King of the Ranges. The winning poems will have a musical score composed for them, the winning stories will be published online and the winning artwork will be framed and placed on display at Scone Library. A presentation to the winners will be made before the screening of ‘The Silver Brumby’ at the Scone RSL during the family ‘Movie Night’ on Monday 13 May.

This festival would not exist without the generous support from our sponsors and tickets will be on sale next week for the Official Opening Cocktail Party. This is where we take the opportunity to personally thank all our sponsors. This year we welcomed two new Gold Level sponsors - Air Speed Aviation and The Paradice Family. Many other businesses have contributed towards the Festival – a full listing of sponsors is in the official festival programme. Sincere thanks to Scone Race Club for providing such a superb location for an opening event.

Special ANZAC Day Performance Organisers of The Gum Ball music and arts festival have released the playing times for the event, which amongst a host of great Australian and international acts, includes a uniquely historical performance by members of the famous political folk group Redgum. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the seminal Australian song , ‘I Was Only 19’, the songwriter and lead singer from Redgum, John Schumann, together with long time song -writing partner and fellow Redgum member, Hugh McDonald, will be travelling to the Hunter Valley to perform a very exclusive and special one-off commemorative ANZAC Day performance at this year’s Gum Ball Festival on Thursday 25 April.

‘I was Only 19’ is a very powerful and timeless song which captured the confronting imagery of the Vietnam war through the eyes of returned soldiers. It was a massive hit for Schumann’s political folk band Redgum when it was recorded and released in 1983 as part of the album Caught In The Act. Growing from the heart of the Australian fabric, it is an anthem that will remain as a stark reminder for future generation of the impact of war, an issue still very much relevant today.

In line with their exclusive festival performance, John Schumann and Hugh McDonald have just recorded and released a special remix of an unreleased track titled ‘The Long Run.’

The exclusive song has similar political overtones of the struggles of war with thought provoking messages however this one is appropriate in the sense that it’s a song of hope delivered with Schumann’s trademark strong vocals.

The Gum Ball will be held from Thursday 25 April- Saturday 27 April and features over thirty six artists both local and international over three days, including Turin Brakes (UK) Mia Dyson, The Hillbilly Killers, Tumbleweed, The Beards, Saskwatch, Katalyst and The Medics to name but a few. The festival is family-friendly, with onsite camping, a popular BYO policy, loads of kids activities, delicious food and much more.

The festival proudly supports and fundraises for The Black Dog Institute.

Please visit the website for further info on the event, and a print-friendly version of the program.
