Chair Chat A frustrating game for the M1s who were leading with 5 minutes to go but with possibly only 1 relegation if no South teams come down from the National League relegation can still be avoided. Wins for the M2s, 4s and Eagles whilst the 5s let a 2 goal slip for a draw after a long winning run. The Ladies 1s were on half term whilst the 2s and 3s had good wins and the 4s had to settle for a point. Team of the Week was a tough call with both 2nd teams winning against higher opposition but it's the Men's side who get the vote toppling the league leaders. Cup action for the men’s over 50s saw them go through to the Quarter Finals in the EH Tier 3 competition and have a home draw on 8th March in the last 8. A special thanks to Selwyn’s wife for a wonderful Tea I hear. This Sunday sees the M4s in QF action against Nottingham University.
Invitations went out to 75 Volunteers on Sunday night for the Evening on Friday 27th March. If you are a volunteer and have not received the invite please let me know. The Hockey Section AGM is on Saturday 21st March just before the Champagne evening. A list of those roles that are elected is published below. We are still waiting to hear of a few holders are standing again although we know that there are at least 2 vacancies where we are looking for volunteers to step forward. The first is a new Men's Section Captain as Craig is stepping down. If you are interested please speak to Craig or anyone one from the Management Committee. The other role is as a Marketing and Sponsorship manager who can help publicise our club and raise funds to support the playing side. Many people tell me that we need this role. I agree. Sadly we don't have any people prepared to help at this stage so please step forward. A reminder to book up for the Dinner Dance and Awards evening on 25th April. Delighted to see the Saints win again albeit against a woeful Villa side. Rob

Match Reports Past Masters v Bromley and Beckenham Ravens 2 Saturday 22
nd February
Lost 0(0) - 2(0)
. .What a difference a week makes, and then again doesn’t..
As previewed last week we had a repeat fixture but this time at Brunel. Both teams turned up with squads of 13 and the weather was very different to last week with no sign of storms or rain. The visitors got off to a flying start and had the PMs pressed inside their own half for the opening 10 minutes. During this time Ian and Harry had to make a couple of last ditch challenges, Sukhi had to track back with whoever they deployed down their right, with Graham dropping back to assist. On the right Pali was being helped by Sardar and the middle was being fought over by Selwyn, Raj and “L”. They got a couple of shorts before we were able to draw breath really but failed to score with Ian putting one neatly around the post for a long. We did what we haven’t done for a long while and that is not concede an early goal. This gave us the confidence to gradually fight our way back into the game and so midway through the half we managed a short of our own courtesy of some robust defending from their back man on Buddy. The offended forward injected to Harry who’s shot was well saved by their keeper but now he was down and the ball broke to “L” who couldn’t manage to convert. For the rest of the half it was nip and tuck, both defences were busy Graham on our left was pushing their midfielder back and occupying their right back thus give Sukhi a well deserved break. Buddy, “L” Selwyn and Sardar managed to get into some great forward positions but clear chances were hard to come by although we did manage to flash the ball across their goal a couple of times tantalisingly close to another forward. We refreshed the midfield by bringing on Tim with 10 mins to go and again started to probe but at the back everyone was working hard to keep up with their fleet footed forwards and supporting midfielders. So halftime came with no score and few clear cut chances at either end.

The 2nd
half was much more the PMs in terms of possession and half chances but we got caught by a sucker blow when, from a quickly taken hit, they managed to free their winger behind our defence, he crossed hard and away from the keeper and their most advanced forward converted with a sweet mid-air volley at the back post. Not what we deserved and we took the game to them. Three forwards had good or at least passable opportunities but their keeper was inspired and not giving their slender lead away. As we pushed for the equaliser the inevitable happened and we conceded a 2
nd on the break, how their single forward avoided 2
defenders and the keeper was a bit of a catalogue of errors. For the last 10 mins we huffed and puffed and switched personnel again but only to be thwarted by a period of strange play for the last 4 mins where the visitors kept possession within our 23yds, nothing like their opening spell but just as effective. Unlike last week not a game of two halves with the PMs making a spirited effort against the table toppers and with no reward for all their effort, it is a bit like some premier teams going away and catching the home team on the break. All of the PM players acquitted themselves well at times but most also had an off few minutes so no individual MotM this week. They are a relatively social side and there were still some B&B’s celebrating their league topping performance when the reporter had to bail out. “Màlmand” Men’s O50s 2(2) Hearne Bay 1(0) Sunday 23
rd February
Won 2(2) - 1(0)
. .Structure, Class and a Squeaky end. . Would Hearne Bay travel away, what sort of team would they bring, would the weather impact it – these were some of the questions up in the air before the game. Both sides had squads of 13 and looked relatively equal during the warm-up although some of the visitors didn’t arrive as early as they’d hoped. Would this tardy arrival mean a slow start for the visitors? They needn’t have worried as the early exchanges were pretty equal and both teams looked compressed and well organised. The Eastcote team opted for a 3-4-3 formation in the aspiration of scoring more goals than the opposition who went with a 4-4-2. 10 minutes in and it was even stevens with both sides having half chances and the odd short corner. Our backline looked comfortable with Bonesy, Roger and Rich linking well with the midfield of Pravin, Speedie, Gulshan and Sardar who were all mobile enough to create space in which to receive a pass. So we were solid but so were Hearn Bay as our forwards found the marking close.

You are cordially invited to join “The Cavendish Club” -
The Friends of Eastcote Hockey Club In 2007, the original Cavendish Club was set up. Targeted at present and former Men’s 1st XI players, this new club generated resources that were invested back into the future of Eastcote Hockey Clubs Men’s 1st team. At the same time, it provided a mechanism to ensure old friends and teammates could stay in touch. It was successful in generating income, organising popular dinners and provided funding to help the Men’s 1st XI. As we enter a new decade and to celebrate this unwavering support, we are re-launching The Cavendish Club* - a voluntary organisation open to all within the club be they player, umpire, coach, volunteer, parent or friend. It will generate funds aimed at supporting success for the two elite teams: the Men’s and Women’s 1st XI teams. This will be achieved through investment in playing and coaching performance throughout the club. As such, funds generated would only be used to enhance the playing success of the club and not for normal operational management. In order to join, we ask that you set up an annual standing order for a minimum of £20 to be paid to:

I am sure you will have many more exciting ideas so let us know! We are seeking a club member to lead this new initiative but in the mean time if you have any suggestions or questions please contact Jamie Nicholls ([email protected]).
The breakthrough came midway through the half Sardar fed Graham on the right wing, having beaten his man he exchanged multiple passés with strike partner Selwyn. The 2 advanced into the circle and drew some despairing tackles from the defenders which freed up Woodie to drift in from the left wing and take up a spot in the centre of the D. Selwyn found him, his first-time control was excellent and much needed as the keeper was now on top of him, but not close enough to stop the crisp shot into the goal. A lovely goal involving a combination of all 3 forwards, so it looked like our formation was a success, “Liverpoolesque” as Geoff P was to point out in the bar afterward. Importantly we had the discipline to stay composed and organised for the next 5 mins thanks in no short term to the organisational skills and awareness of Roger and Rich at the back. Having settled once again we pushed up to try and extend our advantage, Ian was now on and gave us an injection of energy, Selwyn and Speedie exchanged passés in the middle and Gulshan drifted forward into the CF position. He was found with a lovely through ball from the Selwyn/Speedie move, Gulshan dropped his shoulder and sent the defender the wrong way and in the space created hit a clean strike into the bottom corner to double our lead, true class. So at half time we’re 2 up and looking good. But Hearne Bay were to reorganise at half time and change their approach so the 2
nd half turned out not to be a comfortable
as the first. Eastcote defence was under more pressure and had to successfully defend half a dozen shorts and several half chances including one which saw the ball reverse flicked and sail over a diving Dave and fortunately over the top corner of the goal from their tricky CF, they had been warned. With 8 min to go our defensive shape and discipline was breached and the visitors manage to free 2 forwards behind the O50s backline, they duly converted the chance passing around the keeper. So a squeaky final phase of the game in which both sides had chances and we had to defend 3 shorts such was their pressure, but did so successfully to run out narrow winners by the odd goal. This was a result built from the back, utilising a balanced midfield and 3 forwards who were willing to work and deploy the high press. Bring on Letchworth in the next round. “Màlmand” Ladies 5s v Staines 3s Saturday 22
nd February
Lost 0 - 2 Hard Work
The ladies 5s had the pleasure of entertaining Staines at Brunel. The pre-match description of the opposition as robust proved to be pretty accurate with the young Eastcote side finding the Staines style of play difficult. Eastcote started the brighter with the midfield three of Phoebe and the two Sophie's controlling the middle of the park and getting the ball to the forward line regularly. Staines sheer force however prevailed and they grabbed two goals against the run of play. In truth Gina only had one or two saves to make all game.
The EastcoNet 5 29th February 2020
We created a decent amount of chances, had most of the possession and our ability to run off the ball and make simple passes was clear throughout. Once we work out how to score all will be resolved! Player of the match - Sophie D for controlling the midfield (and probably earning a fair few bruises in the process). Craig Eagles vs Banbury 5s Saturday 22
nd February
Won 2 - 1
Should Have Been More A 3pm home game for the Eagles and 15 on Teamer as I said a home game! Only 13 managed to make it though. Banbury had the bare 11 and a poor display of kit, for once we looked and felt like the superior side, we hadn’t started yet! Their captain apologised for their kit saying he had spent so much time just getting 11 to travel that he forgot the colour clash and away kit. From the off the Eagles enjoyed most of the possession and started to use our 3 young players John, Ashok and Ollie to good effect all of them causing Banbury problems. We had 3 or 4 good chances but couldn’t convert. Banbury with some experience at the back and in midfield caught us on the break and with their first attack took the lead. After more possession for the Eagles, Ashley managed to equalise before half time. The second half was all Eagles again, at least half a dozen shorts not converted, numerous shots not converted all against a 14 year old on his adult debut! (Well done young man). Finally after some great play by the young trio, Ashok scored 2-1 to the Eagles. A win but extremely frustrating. Ash Ladies 4s v Ealing 2s Saturday 22
nd February
Drew 2 - 2
Levelled Our previous match With Ealing was our worst loss of the season to date 4-1. Ealing now top of the league, we were under no illusion this would be a hard game!! So 11 strong we took to the pitch and dominated play from the offset. Ealing fought back and were fast on the break. I can’t actually remember who scored first ! Our first goal came from a short corner me scoring then me unashamedly celebrating like I’d won the lottery (apologies to all the team for my shameful behaviour, I really need to work on my cool Nonchalant game face). We fought hard throughout the game with Lesley, Ilana, Becky, Jackie and Pam tirelessly firing balls at their goal to no avail. Our defence as always staying strong and breaking down the majority of Ealing's attacks. Then and

(Not So) Great Expectations Going into the game, form suggested only one outcome. Eastcote were 7th in the league with 1 win since December, and Henley sat perched at the top having lost only 1 in that same time frame. Our situation wasn’t helped after a Friday night pull-out and the weekly robbery by the 1’s leaving us with only 10 players come Saturday morning, meaning that stand-in captain Deffy needed to build a team quicker than China could build a hospital: Many thanks to Andy Inness and Jeff who stepped in at the last minute to give us a full team. And so, with the odds stacked against us, we took to the field. The game began with a series of early Henley short-corners, yielding a flurry of good saves from young keeper Seth, and the visitors’ failure to capitalise proved costly as the two Deffy’s combined in the D with the larger of the pair applying the finishing touch to a well crafted move to give Eastcote the advantage. The lead should’ve doubled shortly after when Thorpey’s drag-flick was turned in by Ollie at the back post yet the goal was controversially ruled out after the umpire deemed the original shot to be an undercut, much to the amazement of home team. Henley took advantage of the confusion by scoring an equaliser to tie the game at 1-1, and it remained like this until the halftime whistle. The second half was dominated by Eastcote, who came close following a short-corner where Luke hit the post, and the pressure continued with the Henley keeper denying Jimmy from a tight angle. However, the deciding goal did come, and with a hint of good fortune as Ollie’s drag-flick was deflected by a Henley defender and the ball looped over the goalkeeper who was miles off his line; akin to Neil Sullivan against Manchester United, rewarding the efforts of the hosts. The closing encounters were tense following a very harsh yellow card given to Ollie, and perhaps a more justified green awarded to Luke. Despite the numerical advantage, Henley failed to level the scores meaning that Eastcote secured an unlikely win and continued their resurgence towards the top-end of the table. The contrasting emotions were evident after the final whistle when handshakes were due before leaving the pitch. MOM went to Seth who made some great saves to keep Eastcote in front, but it has to be said that every player played well. Onto the next one…
Martin Tyler Ladies 3 v Hampstead and Westminster 6 Saturday 23
rd February
Won 1-0
The Lucky Kingfisher The prettiest team in the league were up against top of the table Hampstead and Westminster on Saturday. Hampstead and Westminster had only lost 1 game all season and the last time we played them they beat us 6-0…
To say expectations were low is an understatement! The team were instructed to meet at the Club’s bar before the match…you may think that's a simple instruction, however it turns out that new recruit Mel had no idea where the bar was (yes a hockey player not knowing where to find the bar…completely unheard of!). After we found Mel wandering around the car park, we began our team talk which consisted of players sharing fun facts about themselves and Co-Captain Charmaine announcing that she was still drunk (finding the bar is not a problem for some!). The fun facts included Mala announcing that she will probably get taken out this game (correct), goalkeeper Lili reporting that she will probably cry this game (incorrect), Ice (cube) informing us that she has a cute puppy (correct) and ‘Four Hats Dave’ stating that she saw a lucky kingfisher on her morning dog walk. Hampstead and Westminster may have 42 points and a goal difference of +34 but we had a lucky kingfisher! The match started off well with Ice (cream) making some excellent tackles, Mel dominating the right hand side, Tess and Hannah linking up beautifully in the middle and ‘Four Hats Dave’ distributing the ball to the hard working forwards. Just as Mala predicted, she was taken out in the D after some excellent attacking play. A short corner was awarded and Eastcote went 1-0 up after a brilliant strike from Tess and Mala following up on the rebound! Eastcote dominated the first half despite the wind being so strong that Anna risked losing her fake eyelashes! After our half time sweets and some words of wisdom from Neets and Kim, the team were determined to keep their lead in the second half. Hampstead and Westminster came back fighting but they didn’t stand a chance against our mighty defenders Delia, Ice (lolly), Kim, Anna and Charlotte. Lili made some excellent saves and the whole team supported each other throughout. In the dying stages of the game Hampstead and Westminster were awarded a short corner, followed by another, followed by another, followed by another! 5 short corners after the final whistle had blown, 'Four Hats Dave' managed to clear the ball from the D and we WON!!!!!! As we came off the pitch to celebrate with our windswept supporters, Delia’s family came up to her and said ‘Mum I thought you’d play like a Granny, but you didn’t’ - there’s a compliment in there somewhere! We would like to thank our families (even those who accidentally insult their mothers), Rollo (Ice(-icle)'s puppy), the lucky kingfisher and our wonderful captains Kim and Charms as without them we wouldn't be celebrating this momentous victory! I'll save the rest of the Oscars speech for next week's win against Southgate. Lorea

The EHC
Bubbly Challenge
2019/2020
Sponsors commit to paying for a bottle of bubbly for the team if it wins* the sponsored game 88 Games over the season. All teams represented, all games at home.
The club will provide the bubbly and the sponsor of a winning game will pay the club for the bottle. Bottles will be provided on the night and payment will be asked for before the bubbly challenge party. Sponsors are encouraged to join the teams on the bubbly celebration evening to help celebrate the win. Last year the bottles were £12 each and were a very nice crémant. The cost will be <£20 and the club aims to get the best tasting bottle within this price range. WINNERS IN RED
*In the event the match is postponed the result of the fixture on the new date will be used to determine the status if the win. In the event the match is cancelled by the opposition it will be deemed to be won as a walkover. If the match is cancelled by Eastcote it is deemed a loss.

Junior vacancies – looking for a few volunteers! TAPS The club is built on volunteers, parents who can find a few hours a week to help in the running of the club. A hugely important role are the Taps. This stands for Team Admin Person. It’s your age groups ‘go-to’ person who would have helped you through the season. In the next season we need the following age groups filled and we would love to hear from you if you thought this could be you.
U10 Boys: U10 Girls: U16 Boys A TAP helps organise the age group and assist the coach with the administration behind the team……...... You basically need to be able to let the parents know what is happening via email, WhatsApp or Teamer. You manage an existing database and you make the coaches lives easier! The job won’t take hours to do but it will make a huge difference to the club and the coach and are such an important part of the Junior Section. You will only be a TAP for your child’s age group. Would you like to have a chat about being a TAP, just get in contact with your existing TAP or me at [email protected]
End of season schedule The end of the season isn’t too far off and here’s a table to show which age groups finish at what dates. As a grand end to the season we will also be hosting the Junior End of Season Festival for all U6s- U16s on Sunday 19h April. Please save the date and details will follow but this is a celebration day of fun games and an award ceremony to finish the season with.

Eastcote U14 development vs West Herts - 23.02.20 Many thanks to Jayesh for coaching the boys in my absence and for his match report (photos attached)

The game started off badly for Eastcote, put-off by the height of the opposition players. Jamie, Krish D, and Aaron played up front with Avi slotting in as a forward centre-mid. Charlie, Theo, Matt, Taaj and Raj shared the midfield, leaving Kian, Owen, Vansh in defence and Adrian in goal. It did take a bit of time for the team to settle and West Herts used this to their advantage when they scored within the first few minutes. Eastcote were clearly rattled by the early goal and for the rest of the half were not playing as freely as they usually play. West Herts continued to press for another goal but the combined efforts of Adrian, Kian, Owen, Vansh and for a time Matt made sure they did not score. Even though there seemed to be a lot of high-sticks and late tackles from West Herts Eastcote played some excellent hockey, with a few chances at goal. After a little pep talk (and a quick word with the umpires about our concerns) the second half started off with a fire in Eastcote. This was the team that we had come to expect and it paid off with a brilliant move forward and a clean finish from Aaron. This was certainly a game of two half’s as Eastcote were much more confident with the ball and it was true end-to-end stuff. Eastcote used the wings to great effect and driving the ball forward. The mids and forwards also coming back to defend and drive the ball back into West Herts half. Unfortunately Eastcote could not convert another goal, although both teams has plenty of opportunities. In the end this was a well deserved result with some excellent hockey from both teams. The man-of-the-match has to go to Avi, who was everywhere and literally played every position except goalkeeper. Adrian also has to have a mention for keeping so many shot out of the net and was even complemented by the opposition coach.

I was not expecting this game to be particularly easy as A&C recently beat the second place team in our league - Waltham Forest 5-0. We were perhaps a little off our usual pace but A&C gave us a good run for our money in the first quarter. We identified that we needed to be quicker to close down the opposition and to settle into our passing game – we set a 2 goal target for the second quarter and the boys went out, increased the tempo and did exactly that with some lovely passing hockey - some great distribution form Tuyi, Max G owned the right wing and Rohan the centre zone. So 2-0 up at half time and there was no doubt from the boys that we had it in the bag. We again set a 2 goal target and for the boys to give it 110% for the third quarter to make sure we closed the game. After a very dominant 15 minutes we were 4-0 up and the oppositions heads were down – job done! We took the opportunity to rotate most of the positions in the final quarter and were unlucky not to pick up a couple more goals. I could mention each and every name at this point as the linking play throughout the game included every single player and was a pleasure to watch! A big thank you to our two U12s who made a great contribution and did not look out of place. Goal scorers: Krish 1 Ashok 1 Rokas 1 Tuyi 1 Man of the match – Krish M Many thanks to our umpires Chris Butler and Irene Hall Peter Phillips =======================================================================================
