The E-Student: Going Paperless 4
A. Warm-Up The following image shows that a generation born with technology is unaware of how learning was done in the past.
Question to ponder: Why is it important to learn about the history of learning and communication tools?
5 The E-Student: Going Paperless
B. Goal and Objectives Goal: E-learning students from the University of Texas at Brownsville who complete this instructional unit will be able to create an assignment using multiple mobile applications by (1) identifying historical learning and communication techniques to show the evolution of paperless learning, (2) analyzing pros and cons of traditional paper learning tools and comparing with mobile technology, (3) surveying mobile applications used as learning tools, and (4) creating an infographic using several mobile applications. Objectives:
1. Given a web-based presentation about learning techniques from different periods of communication and education history through a mobile device, students will identify various learning tools in each historical era correctly at least 80% of the time.
2. Given a web-based presentation through a mobile device about the advantages and disadvantages of traditional paper tools and mobile technology, students will compare traditional learning tools with mobile technology with at least 80% accuracy.
3. Given a web-based presentation through a mobile device about Google Docs, students will identify the application's important note-taking features correctly at least 80% of the time.
4. Given a web-based demonstration of creating an infographic with the mobile application, Autodesk Sketchbook, students will demonstrate drawing skills, insert an image, and save an infographic with at least 80% accuracy.

C. Prerequisites Before starting this instructional unit, you must first own a mobile device that is used frequently enough that you are comfortable navigating its different menus, screens, and various applications. Secondly, you must also know where to retrieve new applications as this instructional unit will be asking learners to download specific ones to complete this unit. Please note that this instructional unit has been designed with flexibility in mind, so it is understood that not all students will own the same mobile device. That said, please select the best answer to the following two questions.
Entry Behavior Test
1. What might the device camera icon look like?
2. Where might you go if you want to download new mobile applications?
a) Walmart b) Best Buy c) Google Play d) Yahoo
7 The E-Student: Going Paperless

E. Guided Practice
Handout #4: Creating an Infographic Using Multiple Mobile Applications
The following handout covers the information needed to learn task #4: Create an infographic using several mobile applications.
Creating an Infographic Using Multiple Mobile Applications
Digital Camera Google Chrome 1. Open Digital Camera app 2. Find object to briefly study
(Example: Bhut Jolokia "Ghost Pepper") 3. Autofocus 4. Zoom if needed 5. Make sure the flash is turned on if needed 6. Take a picture of desired object 7. Check Gallery for desired picture outcome 8. Retake picture for desired image result if
necessary
9. Open Google Chrome App 10. Type in object name that an image was
taken of 11. Pick one search result 12. Read information and pick a 5 interesting
facts
Google Docs Autodesk Sketchbook 13. Open Google Docs 14. Create New Document 15. Create a numbered bullet list 16. Refer to the Google Chrome app using the
multitask button (or both Chrome and Docs will have to be reopened to take notes on the research)
17. Note: cite all sources used for assignments that will be graded
18. Select all of the text and copy 19. Save and name the document
20. Open Autodesk Sketchbook 21. Open the text icon and paste the text that
was copied and touch the check mark 22. Add a new layer 23. Merge layers as necessary 24. Import image 25. Draw and add colors on infographic for
creativity 26. Share graphic to the device (It will ask to
save to your Google account)

F. Independent Practice Instructions: Utilizing Handout #4 as a guide, please create an infographic using four mobile applications; a digital camera app, Google Chrome, Google Docs, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Deliverables: The image file taken, source website used from Google Chrome, Google Doc file, and the final infographic file.
Infographic Rubric
Outstanding Good Needs Improvement Poor The final product has a unique image that was taken for this assignment and shows superior photography skills, like clarity, tactful cropping, adequate variation in contrast, brightness, and color, if applicable.
The final product has a unique image that was taken for this assignment.
The final product includes an image that was not taken by the student.
The final product does not include an image at all.
Five interesting facts about the object in the picture were found using Google Chrome.
Four facts about the object in the picture were found using Google Chrome.
Two to three facts about the object in the picture were found using Google Chrome.
Zero facts or one fact about the image was listed.
A Google Docs document was created and the five facts were saved as a numbered list.
A Google Docs document was created and the facts were listed, but not in the numbered list format.
A Google Docs document was created, but the information was not listed in the numbered list format and it is not clear what is being conveyed by the information saved.
No word processor application was utilized to write down the facts found, which may contribute to a lack of accurate reporting of the facts.
The numbered list of five facts was copied into Autodesk Sketchbook, the image taken was inserted, and the infographic design demonstrates creativity.
The infographic is closely resembles the final product but does not completely fulfill one of the requirements. Perhaps the image or text was inserted incorrectly.
The infographic does not include all of the five facts or an image, and it has a cluttered or sparse appearance.
The final infographic is not completed at all.
After completion, the infographic was saved and shared in a common image file format, like .jpeg, or .png.
The infographic was saved and shared via some other common file method that is not an image file (i.e. word document or .pdf).
The infographic was saved and shared via some other image file format that is not generally recognized by major applications or websites (i.e. .tiff, .pcx, or .tga).
The infographic was saved, but not shared.
