Ellen Locke, Membership MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings Don Diego, The 2018-19 ski season finished with a memorable bang on April 14, when we celebrated the 60 th Anniversary of the founding of DDSC with a Hornblower Harbor Cruise and Brunch. See the pics from this event in the Club website’s Photo Album. The feedback from you members was very enthusiastic, and the Board appreciates your complimentary feedback. Four days after the Cruise, the result of the Election of Officers was announced at the April 18 general meeting. There were no write-in votes, so the field presented by the Nominating Com- mittee was voted in unanimously: Myself and Eileen Weiner return as President and Vice-President, with Leslie Pally moving to Treasurer and Cindy Benner debuting as Secretary. This will be my fourth year as President, even though the By-Laws call for a two-year limit. Maybe one of you would like to take a turn as President or some other Officer in 2020-2021. If you are in- terested, please attend some of the Board meetings to get a feel for what is involved. The coming months will offer plenty of DDSC activity. There will be a beer-tasting and lunch meetup at one of the local breweries on Saturday, July 13 --- look for an announcement soon. The Summer Picnic returns to Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club at 11am on Sunday, August 4. Details also coming soon. The annual Labor Day BBQ falls on Monday, September 2 this year: save that date. And of course Sabine leads her 8 am Thurs- day Morning Hikes all Summer. See the HIKING/FITNESS report on page 4 for contact information. Last summer, four different members hosted gathering at their houses, and let’s hope we can have more of these in Summer 2019. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to do so. And please let me know of any other ideas or activities to make our Club better. One such recent suggestion was to add a fourth Mammoth trip in late March 2020, and the Board is ex- ploring that request. Thanks for a great year! Ed Offstein - DDSC President

Some Ski Industry News (reprinted from the FAR WEST NEWS FLASH)

For those of wondering what to do this summer, this article from the Auto Club Westways Magazine,May/June 2019 issue may provide an answer.

It's all DOWNHILL by Ken Van Vechten

California ski resortsdon't sit dormant insummer. Many ofthem become moun-tain bike parks afterthe ski season ends. You ride up on achairlift or gondolaand cruise down ontwo wheels. Theseparks, which typically open in late May, offer thrills for bothskilled bikers and newbies. Operators provide rental bikes (withfull suspension), gear (regular or full-face helmets and pads),lessons, and learner areas where you can whet your wheels.

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK(800) 626-6684 mammothmountain.comTHE LOWDOWN: Six beginner trails; a "fundamentals" prac-tice loop; a skills park with variable terrain and features; a begin-ner-trail-dedicated chairlift.YOU CAN DO THIS: "If people can ride a bike, they can - withresonable expectations - downhill mountain bike. But they needto understand that riding on smooth asphalt is different than rid-ing on dirt. We're here to help them with that." -Gabe Taylor,Mammoth Bike Park marketing managerWHY MAMMOTH: In a nutshell, riding diversity. The samevaried terrain and sheer mass that makes Mammoth Mountainsuch a great ski hill in winter also makes it a great bike park insummer, for beginners and pros. When it comes to miles of biketrails accessible by lifts, it's a standout.

NORTHSTAR CALIFORNIA RESORT(800) 466- 6784 northstarcalifornia.comTHE LOWDOWN: Five beginner trails; a Specialized BikeAcademy for rental and lesson needs; a Bumps and Bends Zonewith skill-development features (jumps and burms, riding overrocks).YOU CAN DO THIS: "Ride the same trail a few times to buildconfidence. It is absolutely okay to fall, too, and it won't be asbad as you thought." -Luke Sheppard, Specialized Bike AcademymanagerWHY NORTHSTAR: The park sits between the north shore ofLake Tahoe and Truckee, which means it's also vacation central.Visitors have easy access to the lake's recreational bounty, aswell as to one of the Sierra's funkiest little towns.

SNOW SUMMIT BIKE PARK(909) 866-5766 bigbearmountainresort.comTHE LOWDOWN: Two beginner trails; an Adventure Acade-my that combines lift tickets, rentals, and lessons in one stop; aSkill Builder Area (a collection of beginner trails and trainingzones).YOU CAN DO THIS: "With the padding and full-face helmets, riders look like storm troopers. But it need not be daunting. Wehave downhill terrain for all ability levels." -Justin Kanton, mar-keting managerWHY SNOW SNOW SUMMIT: The smallest of these threeparks, it provides everything needed for a fun day plus location, location, location. The Big Bear Lake resort is just an hour'sdrive from most of the Inland Empire and not much more than atwo-hour drive from most of the Southland.

Costs vary. Figure $100-$400 for lift ticket, bike and equipmentrental, and lessons. Rentals are not required, and riders with ap-propriate bikes and safety gear need just a lift pass.

HIKING/FITNESSEveryone burns fuel doing everyday activ-ities, and with a little imagination, it’seasy to turn mundane activities into calo-rie-burning opportunities. Research sug-gests these activities can actually counttoward recommended exercise guidelines.(The CDC recommends two-and-a-halfhours of aerobic activity and two days ofstrength training per week.) Here are sixactivities that sneak exercise into your

routine while also crossing things off your to-do list.

Shopping means walking, and walking burns calories (we’retalking upwards of 200 calories per hour). Even better, park farfrom the store’s entrance and avoid elevators and escalators.

Cleaning, vacuuming, sweeping, etc. is good for 150 caloriesper hour.

Cooking, working in the kitchen—everything from choppingveggies to washing pots and pans—burns around 75 calories in30 minutes.

Sitting, we don't mean you're going to get healthy sitting downall day long. But there are things you can do while parked in achair to get in a bit of exercise. Try lifting your shoulders toyour ears. Next, tighten your core, squeeze your butt, and liftyour legs!

Washing your car can burn 135 calories in 30 minutes. Add ina few sets of calf raises to reach the roof of the car and a fewsets of squats to wash the tires—you'll get in a quick legworkout while making your car shine.

Gardening is also a great workout!

Last, not least - Smile! Did you know smiling uses 17 of yourface muscles?

THE JOE HARRIS AWARDSby Helen Navoy Harris

There are two Joe Harrisperpetual trophies. One isthe Convair-Don Diegoracing award and thesecond is the San DiegoCouncil service award.

The racing trophy waspresented to the ConvairSki Club by the Convair

Recreation Association (commonly known as CRA) at the timeof Joe's retirement in recognition of his 30 years' service as Com-missioner of the ski club (about 1982). The trophy was expandedto include Don Diego Ski Club. The trophy was presented annu-ally to the male and female racer who made the most points forthe club in that season. The two winners had their names in-scribed on it and were allowed to "keep" the trophy for 6 monthseach before it was passed on to the successors. It took manyyears and many dollars spent on race clinics and race camps be-fore yours truly became proficient in my ski racing techniques toattain the most female points for the club and thus had a Harrisname engraved on the trophy. Joe, on the other hand, was notfortunate enough to win his own trophy because of his age andthe aggressive competition of his younger teammates. The trophyremains as a coveted race award for the club.

The Joe Harris service award is presented by the by the San Die-go Council to a San Diego club skier who has contributed morethan five years of serving San Diego skiers in various major ca-pacities. This is how it all started. Last year, Judy Schulthies,President of the Council, related to me that the Council wished togive a Joe Harris award in memory of the Council originator andshe asked my approval. I not only was highly delighted with theproject, I also donated one of Joe's favorite trophies which hereceived in 1964 for his many volunteering acts for the skiingcommunity. The trophy was a statuette figure of an early Scandi-navian skier presented by the Scandinavian Airlines System(SAS) which flew it to San Diego on behalf of the "Associationfor the Furtherance of Skiing" located in Oslo, Norway, thebirthplace of skiing. In Norway this skier figure is known as"Birkebeiner". I choose to call it the "Skimeister" trophy. Onlytwo were presented in San Diego: the first in 1963 to HenryMandolf, the father of San Diego Ski Club and organizer of thetemporary ski lifts in the Cuyamacas and the second in 1964 toJoe Harris for meeting skiers' needs and forming the Council.

With such a legacy, the recipients of the current trophy (whichhas been enclosed and put on a larger base) should be honored tojoin this elitist group. The first recipient, unanimously selected in2003, was Jim Ortiz for his past and present services to the ski-ing community. This year , Connie Smith was chosen for herformidable ski-volunteerism history. It remains to be seen whojoins the group in 2005.

NOTEThis is an advertisement from

the 1977/1978 season SAN DIEGOSKIER publication. The advertised

ski trip is no longer available!

In 1978, the Mammoth Mountain adult lift ticketscost $10 per day. The ski area at that timehad 16 double chair lifts, two gondolas, two Tbarsand two poma lifts. By then, all of theoriginal rope tows had been removed.
