MaiN GatE RENovatioN

Due to the Main Gate guard house renovation, residents are encouraged to clear all guest/services thru QuickPass. If unable to clear your guest/services on your QuickPass account, please call 210-698-7812 or 210-698-5323 for guest/service clearance.

If you have your alarm set up to contact Dominion Security during an alarm activation, please have the phone number changed to the North Gate, 210-698-7812, during the Main Gate renovation period.

Please ensure your vendors know to use the North or South gate to access the Dominion property. This will facilitate faster guest processing at the main gate. Also, Dominion policy requires all drivers on Dominion streets to have a valid driver’s license. Any state or countries’ license will be honored, but they must have one. Residents will have to pick up any guest or vendor at the gate if they do not have a valid license. Please remind your guest that they need their driver’s license in order to gain access on Dominion property.

Your NOC, a committee of the HOA Board, is constantly striving to give you what you need to maximize The Dominion experience. Our new website does just that!

You are now a click away from accessing all of the information you need about our community. Here are some highlights:

What’s New and ImprovedOur Home page now allows you to:

• Review past newsletters, covenants and policies, bylaws and the strategic plan.

• Find HOA staff contact information.• View the HOA Board meeting schedule and minutes.• Communicate with the HOA via email with a simple click on

“Contact.”• Pay your HOA assessment on line

How Do I Use the new Website? Login to www.dominionhoa.com and you will see our Home page, illustrated with beautiful photographs of our community. On this page, there are specific links to click on for detailed information. The website is very user-friendly.

Why Should I use the Website? In addition to keeping up with news and developments in our neighborhood, there are features that streamline some processes for you:• QuickPass:  A simple click on “Grant Access” on the Home page

takes you directly to Quick Pass where you can schedule all visitors and contractors to your home. Security receives your Quick Pass entries immediately, making this the most effective and efficient way for Security to receive your instructions.

• Transponder Policy and Renewal Form: Read about the transponder policy and print the required renewal form.

• Security: “House Check” and “Private Event Security Request” forms are available by clicking “Security” on the Home page.

What Other Features Can I Expect? We are excited to launch a Resident Directory later this year which will be password protected. Many residents have requested this as an important tool to keep in touch with friends and neighbors. Website maintenance is an on-going process. If there are features you desire, we welcome your feedback to Board members or HOA staff.

aCtivitiES aND thE aSSUMPtioN of RiSkOne of The Dominion Homeowners’ Association’s goals is to provide recreational opportunities for residents of this community. This is limited at this time but includes the Annual Bonfire, Ice Cream Social, and occasional fun run. In the future, the HOA plans to offer additional events and activities to enhance the lifestyle of residents in The Dominion. Future events may include a car show, National Night Out, and maybe more fitness events such as runs and rides.

Unfortunately, many activities involve some risk of physical injury. For instance, many athletes have experienced the pain of a twisted ankle while fitness enthusiasts may pull a muscle from time to time. Since participation in Association programs is voluntary, it is assumed the participants accept the risk associated with the activity. Individuals should know their own personal limits and are responsible for taking precautions for their own safety.  Residents should always rely on their own good judgment when their personal safety is at stake. Remember... Safety First!

With this in mind, HOA management must exercise caution when determining which activities the HOA provides, supports, or endorses to insure that each program presents acceptable and reasonable levels of risk. Some residents in The Dominion have interests in fairly adventurous activities which may present unacceptable risk.

Regardless, The HOA will try to provide a variety of fun activities while considering the safety of participants and risk to the HOA. If you have questions about HOA activities or have an interest in an activity not currently offered, please contact Rob McDaniel at 698.1232. Thank You!

DoMiNioN ClaSSiC CaR Show PoStPoNED

The Classic Car Show scheduled for April 28 has been cancelled until sometime in August. The reason for the date change is the construction of the main gate. The main gate area is adjacent to the parking area for the classic cars. Construction dust and dirt on classic cars would not make for happy car owners! Based on this, we decided it would be best to wait until the construction is complete.

The Annual Meeting

The Dominion HOA Annual Meeting held April 10 at Leon Springs Elementary was attended by a small number of residents. The 2012-2013 HOA board had presentations by the Landscape, Development, Security and Finance Committees. Each committee had an opportunity to highlight the main accomplishments and finances of the HOA.

Nine Dominion HOA Board of Directors hold a term of three years. Three Board of Directors terms expired this year. Newly elected directors for these positions are:

Glen GlassJeff LewisDavid Ray

Members of the 2013-2014 Dominion HOA Board are: Jon Trautman, Michael Antieri, Jim Berg, Ted Resnick, Lyn Hicks, Carla Ruiz, Jeff Lewis, David Ray and Glen Glass.

The Board meeting schedule and meeting minutes are posted on the website at www.dominionhoa.com

We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. Busy parents are always looking for a little help taking care of their children. One childcare option that is frequently overlooked is hosting an au pair from a foreign country. An Au Pair is a young adult from another country who provides live-in childcare services and a cultural experience while living with the family. Typically the age of an au pair is from 20-24 years old, they must be fluent in English plus have a driver's license and be willing to stay with the host family for at least 12 months. Au pairs are carefully screened by a government regulated au pair program and must meet the qualifications for experience and training.

The host family must meet certain requirements as well, such as submitting an application, providing a private bedroom (room and board) for the au pair and completing an in-home interview. Plus there are regulations to comply with the U.S. Department of State, including limiting the au pair work hours to a maximum of 45 hours a week and 10 hours a day. One leading agency is AuPairCare, their website is a good resource to learn more about hosting and au pair qualifications. And it is helpful to learn more from current host families and their stories.

Most host families enjoy the flexible work schedule that an au pair provides and the unique interaction of learning from another culture in their home.

The types of families that make a good fit should:• Have an understanding and open attitude about other cultures• Enjoy a flexible schedule that au pairs provide for their childcare

needs• Be willing share their family and community interaction

Military families frequently embrace the au pair opportunity. They have been world travelers and appreciate the cultural experience. Because military families may not live near relatives and they need the extra help at home when one spouse is deployed, having an au pair can help to maintain a stable household. Check to see if the agency offers military discounts as well as discounts for families with twins and multiples.

Each family has to determine what childcare arrangement works best for them. It is good to know all the options and to discuss with your family.

Rosemary Terpolilli has been a Dominion resident for over 15 years and is a current Area Director for AuPairCare as well as a freelance writer for Examiner.com

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 11 burglaries in The Dominion. Your homeowners association is working to tighten security while the police continue to follow leads to apprehend the culprits. SAPD is only sharing very limited information about the cases consistent with their policy of not revealing any investigatory leads that could impede the investigation.

The areas burglarized have been The Gardens, The Estates, The Vineyard Estates, Andalucia, Renaissance, Renaissance Ridge and Pavilions.

Homes have been entered through back doors or windows. In most cases glass has been broken to enter. Some homes had activated alarms while others were on the house watch program administered by the Dominion security vendor. Most homeowners were reported to be out of town. Expensive jewelry, accessible safes, and money have been stolen from some of these homes. Fortunately no one has been hurt.

It is recommended to all residents to be especially vigilant and continue to take every security precaution:

1) Leave lights on in the evening and when away.2) Set your security alarm.  Make sure your system is monitored

and your monitoring company has your current information. If you have your alarm set up to contact Dominion Security during

an alarm activation, please have the phone number changed to the North Gate, 210-698-7812, during the Main Gate renovation.

3) Keep all doors and windows locked.4) Be watchful of any unusual happenings in your neighborhood.5) Report any suspicious activity immediately to Dominion

Security at 210-698-7812.SAPD will likely start a more active policing of The Dominion as

an additional safety measure. SAPD may stop Dominion residents and guests for traffic or other infractions of the law.

Let's all work together to keep our neighborhood safe and secure!

The ouTlook18 Benefits of Playing a Musical Instrument

Submitted by Rich KeithJeremy Spicer, Vandegrift High School

Director of Bands, is dedicated to teaching music. He says, “Music is a part of everyone’s life in some form. The study of music and all of the arts is critical to the complete education of society...it allows humans the tools to stir feelings and create emotion.” This article will provide you with 18 benefits of playing an instrument and will hopefully give you a better sense of appreciation and pride for music.

1. Increases the capacity of your memory. Research has shown that both listening to music and playing a musical instrument stimulate your brain and can increase your memory: Preschoolers who had weekly keyboard lessons improved their spatial-temporal skills 34 percent more than the other children.  Not only that, but researchers said that the effect lasted long-term. If you learn how to play an instrument, the parts of your brain that control motor skills (ex: using your hands, running, swimming, balancing, etc.), hearing, storing audio information, and memory actually grow and become more active.

2. Refines your time management and organizational skills. Learning how to play an instrument requires you to really learn how to be organized and to manage your time wisely. A good musician knows that the quality of practice time is more valuable than the quantity.

3. Boosts your team skills. Team skills are a very important aspect of being successful in life. Playing an instrument requires you to work with others to make music. In band and orchestra settings you must learn how to cooperate with the people around you.

4. Teaches you perseverance. Learning to play an instrument takes time and effort, which really teaches you patience and perseverance.

5. Enhances your coordination. The art of

playing an instrument  requires a lot of hand-eye coordination.  By reading musical notes on a page, your brain subconsciously must convert that note into specific motor patterns while also adding breathing and rhythm to the mix.

6. Betters your mathematical ability. Reading music requires counting notes and rhythms and can help your math skills. Studies have shown that students who play instruments or study the arts are often better in math and achieve higher grades in school than students who don’t.

7. Improves your reading and comprehension skills. Research shows that children exposed to a multi-year program of music tuition involving training in increasingly complex rhythmic, tonal, and practical skills display superior cognitive performance in reading skills compared with their non-musically trained peers.

8. Increases your responsibility. Playing an instrument comes with its responsibilities. Students must maintain their instrument and must remember music events (like rehearsals and performances) and making time to practice.

9. Exposes you to cultural history. Students learn a variety of music types such as classical traditions, folk music, medieval, and other genres.  Music itself is history.

10. Sharpens your concentration. Playing music by yourself requires you to concentrate on things like pitch, rhythm, tempo, note duration, and quality of sound.  Playing music in a group involves even more concentration.

11. Fosters your self-expression and relieves stress. It’s your instrument, so you can play whatever you want on it!  The more advanced you become on an instrument, the greater you’ll be able to play what you want and how you want.

12. Creates a sense of achievement. Overcoming musical challenges that you thought you’d never quite master can give you

a great sense of pride about yourself.  13. Promotes your social skills. Playing an

instrument can be a great way to enhance your social skills.  Some of the best people join bands and orchestras, and many times the lifelong friends you make here become like family.

14. Boosts your listening skills. Although it’s pretty obvious, playing an instrument requires you to listen very carefully to things. Examples are learning how to hear when you’re playing a wrong note in order to correct yourself, tuning your instrument, and playing with ensemble group.

15. Teaches you discipline. Practicing often and working on the hard parts of music and not just the easy and fun stuff requires discipline.

16. Elevates your performance skills and reduces stage fright. One of the goals of practicing so much on your instrument is so that you can perform for others. The more you get up in front of people and perform, the more you’ll reduce any stage fright.

17. Enhances your respiratory system (wind instruments only). If you have a good music director/tutor, you should hear them tell you quite often to “use more air!”  Breathing exercises are highly recommended for musicians, and they can really strengthen your respiratory system.

18. Promotes happiness in your life and those around you. Playing a musical instrument can be very fun and exciting.  Not only is it fun to play music that you enjoy, but it feels wonderful to hear an audience applaud you for giving a great performance.

Mr Spicer adds, “I cannot imagine my life, or society, without music...it has defined me in nearly every way possible.” Adapted from an article by by Michael Matthews. Food Safety Tips Help Prevent Food Poisoning

When getting together to cook for loved ones, the last thing you want is to get sick from the food you eat. Roberta Anding, a registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine, has a few tips to keep your food safe.• A l w a y s u s e a m e a t

thermometer to check if meat is fully cooked. The color of the meat can’t determine the safety of the meat. All meat should be cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly during food preparation.

• Wash all produce before cutting and chopping. • Refrigerator leftovers within two hours.• Use a thermometer when reheating food as well.

Following these basic guidelines will ensure that the food you serve is safe to eat, said Anding.

Controlling weight can help a person reduce the risk of cancer, said an oncologist from the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine.

"We do not know exactly how and why obesity affects cancer risk, but we know there is an increase, so it is important for everyone to control their weight to minimize this risk,” said Dr. Kent Osborne, director of the Duncan Cancer Center and the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, both at BCM.

Research has linked obesity to a greater risk of developing esophageal, pancreatic, colorectal, breast, endometrial, kidney, thyroid and gallbladder cancer, Osborne said.

In some cancers like breast cancer, there is also an increase in the risk of recurrence if a patient already has the cancer and is obese.

Many other factors, such as genetics, may play a role in cancer development, but keeping a normal weight is one thing people can change and it may help, he said.
