Hello Awesome Band Parents! Now that students are expected to have their instruments, there is an opportunity for them to forget them! I know it will take students a while to get in the groove of remembering their instruments on the correct day. September is especially difficult because the constantly changing schedule. Forgotten instruments are part of what I do, especially at the beginning of the year. I only become concerned about it if it becomes a frequent occurrence. Anything we do in class, students will be able to go home and practice and make up what we did at home if they forgot their instrument. Having an instrument is very important, but it's not a crisis if it only happens once in a while (for example, once per quarter). If your child does forget their instrument, please do not feel like you have to run it to school for them. As a working mom, I know how difficult it is to make an extra trip in the middle of the day. The office is not going to call your student if you drop it off in the middle of the day. We need to do everything we can to have an uninterrupted classroom so that students can focus on their work throughout the day. I will remind students to check the office if they have forgotten their instrument, but the office is not going to call the classroom to tell them if you drop it off. I do usually swing by the office on my way into the building and check to see if there are any instruments there waiting for students, but sometimes my schedule is too tight to make that happen. You can help your child be prepared for class by reminding them to check their planner daily. I highly recommend checking in the evening for the next day, and getting things out and ready to go before going to bed. Get the book in the backpack and set the instrument with the backpack so it's easy to grab in the morning. I don't know of any household with school aged kids that isn't very hectic in the morning. Setting the instrument out the night before helps the morning run a little more smoothly.

REMINDER TO PARENTS:

Please label your child's backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, pencil box, and jackets as they begin to wear them.

Many times several children may have the same items and can accidentally take home someone else's belongings if not labeled. Labeling also help in returning any lost items to the correct child.

Please check the Lost and Found for any lost items. Clothing and personal items that are unclaimed will be given to an appropriate agency.

School Menus

The breakfast and lunch menus will no longer be printed and sent home with students. Our menus will be available on the Bellevue Public Web Site: www.bellevuepublicschools.org

After School Plans While we understand that schedules change and emergencies come up, it is helpful if you can make after school arrangements with your child prior to the start of the school day. This helps limit classroom interruptions and reduces any worries your child may have regarding after school plans. In the event of a change of plans, please contact the office by 2:30 p.m. These instances should be rare so that we can avoid interrupting classes frequently.

For the Safety of all at Peter Sarpy Here at Peter Sarpy we have many families and staff that are dog lovers. However, our student handbook states "Due to health concerns, furred and feathered animals are not allowed in classrooms. Service animals are allowed." Along those same lines, for the health and safety of our students and school community, dogs will not be permitted on school property at any time. Please do not bring your dog(s) on school grounds when dropping off and picking up your child, even when leashed. If you are here with your dog before or after school, please remain on the outer limits of the school grounds. Please make any family members or caregivers that pick up your child aware of this information. Our students' safety comes first. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school a safe and healthy place to be.

Music at Peter Sarpy Elementary

The Bellevue Public Schools Elementary Vocal Music Curriculum names three Essential Objectives:

∗ Students will sing. ∗ Students will play instruments. ∗ Students will read/describe music notation.

Change in Grading Procedures for 2017-2018

Students will receive an overall music grade each semester (quarter 2 and 4). Essential objectives will be recorded in the grade book as the assessments are given, and a learning skills/work habits grade also will be marked every quarter. This change is to better reflect students’ growth and progress learning music skills and concepts during the school year. Please contact Mrs. Taken at 402-293-4795 with any questions or concerns you might have about this grading change.

What do we do in music class?

∗ We sing a variety of songs, in many styles, from many cultures. ∗ We play instruments and games to help learn musical concepts. ∗ We move to music through expressive motion and folk dancing. ∗ We read music and its many symbols. ∗ We listen to a variety of musical styles. ∗ We create music and its forms. ∗ We write music notation and musical ideas.

Music Room Expectations

∗ Make choices that help you and others learn. ∗ Use instruments and materials with care. ∗ Speak, sing, and play only when asked. ∗ Immediately follow all directions. ∗ Consider others and be kind. ∗ Sit and stand with good posture. ∗ Keep hands out of mouth and nose. No picking at or playing with the floor tape on purpose. No gum or candy

Important Reminder If you need to pick-up your child from school for a doctor's appointment or other function, please try to schedule the event after school hours. We know that is not always possible, so please let the teacher and front office know as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly. To avoid your student from prolonged waiting time in the office and missed classroom time, we ask that you arrive a few minutes early. We will no longer call the student to the office until the parent arrives. It doesn’t take very long for the students to come to the office and letting the teacher know ahead of time will help even more. If your child is going to be absent for only one day, it may not be practical for their teacher to send work home. Any prolonged absence should be coordinated with the teacher and front office for better planning.

Moving? If you know that you are leaving Peter Sarpy Elementary School, please let the office know as soon as possible. If you are moving outside the Peter Sarpy boundary, then you must visit the Bellevue Public School District Enrollment Office, and bring proof of address change. If you are moving outside of the Bellevue Public Schools district, please let the office know as soon as possible to obtain a disenrollment form.

Please Remember….

Please remember to discourage your child from bringing valuable personal belongings to school. This includes such items as toys, DS, IPod, PSP, cell phone, etc. Generally, such items pose a distraction to the business of learning. They are also more likely to be stolen, broken, or misused when they are brought to school. If a teacher has asked for such items to be as part of a special classroom activity (Show and Tell, etc.), please clearly mark the item with your child’s name.

You will be receiving a very important First Count Form on Wednesday, October 4th. The information provided on this form allows the Bellevue Public Schools to categorize each student as belonging to one of three groups: students whose parents live and work on federal property, students whose parents work on federal property, and students whose parents do not work on federal property. These categories are used in establishing the amount of funding provided to the school district through federal Impact Aid.
