A generation ago community service was used as a punishment for juvenile offenders, but to- day service is embedded into many class and graduation requirements. In today’s schools students have moved from just volunteering to true service learning. Service Learning is widely understood as a way for students to give back to the community, but it also provides an opportunity for students to learn about themselves. Service learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Many opportunities are available for the students to solve problems and focus on giving back to the community. An example of service is working at a food pantry where students may choose to greet and discuss favorite recipes with community members as they pick up groceries. These students may wish to connect with people whose identities feel familiar, or they may want to learn about those whose lives are unfamiliar so they can become better advocates. But real learning portion of the service may be connected to researching food sources or examining the effects of poverty on learning. The balance of service learning and personal gain is that the emphasis is on both student learning and solving the needs of the community. In turn, the service experience is brought back to the classroom to enhance the academic dialogue and student comprehension. Students work on real problems that make academic learning relevant while simultaneously en- hancing their social skills, analytical ability, civic and ethical responsibility, self-awareness, and career development. As we begin to build more service learning opportunities into the curriculum, I believe it is important to view some examples of Service Learning. Although all classes do not lend themselves to this path, the examples below give an idea of how inte- gration of learning can occur with opportunities to explore skills and interests and to network for career readiness. Bradley County Examples of Service-Learning - In the Event Planning Class, students learn all aspects of planning a community event. Students begin with researching expenses, then budgeting for the event and sponsorship acquisition. Students must meet deadlines to stay on track to complete all task by event day. Students will create a marketing campaign, obtain participants and successfully manage the event. - Sports Medicine Clinical Internship (BCHS) - Every Friday throughout the semester students in this class have taught an adaptive PE class for students at Bradley Central High School. This class also organized the fall festival for the special needs classes at BCHS. This fall festival was on October 28, 2016 and each student was responsible for getting donations and running a field game for the special needs students. Thank you to all our partners, parents, administrators and central office staff for your support with this semester. - Some of Bradley Central’s Future Teachers created “Showtime Savvy,” a talent show for our special education students. The talent show allowed these students to show off their talents on the Fine Arts Center Stage. This was the second year for Showtime Savvy, and it grew to having a packed house to cheer on Bradley’s Special Blessings. - After studying the Elements and Principles of Design in Mrs. Kersey’s Interior Design Class, students decided to take their knowledge and create accessories incorporating various elements and principles. The students then developed a store “The Bears Trendy Pieces” in the schools main office and sold their items to benefit CASA of Bradley/Polk County. The students also created a large piece of artwork that has been placed in CA- SA’s training center. - Bradley Central A/V Production students are providing campus event LIVE-Streaming at www.BCHS.tv several times per week. The student produced broadcast enables family and friends from around the world to enjoy events from Bradley Central High School with a view much like watching ESPN or FOX Sports. The students in this “BEAR Network” service-learning project are not given school credit as it is completely volunteer based. Interviews and auditions take place throughout the year and enable the students to learn in fast placed yet fun working peer led environment. Elementary NewsOGES Student Leads Donation Drive

Laney Inman, a 4th grade student at Oak Grove Elementary School, has started a donation drive to help support homeless shelters in Bradley County. “I love being able to help people. It means a lot to me to help my community.” Laney is accept-ing gently used children’s clothes, school supplies, canned food items, and toiletry items. She has promoted her donation drive through both flyers and phone tree messages to the Oak Grove community. Laney has placed bins outside Mrs. Bandy’s class-room for donated items to be dropped off. “This donation drive for the homeless shelters in Bradley County will start December 12 and end on December 15. I would like to thank everyone that has provided donations and has helped me make my leadership project successful.”

Fourth and Fifth grade students at Charleston Elementary worked in their STEAM class to make over 50 fleece blankets that they donated to the Cold Weather Shelter at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Several guest speakers came to speak to the students about homelessness in Bradley County. Diane Heil, who is known as “The Coat Lady” within the homeless community spoke about the many challenges homeless folks face. One of these is the cold weather that they deal with this time of year. Katelyn Anziano, an Ocoee Middle School student, and Amy Mott from Wesley Memorial spoke about the cold weather shelter the church runs through the winter months. Katelyn encouraged CES students that they are never too young to make a difference. Information about volunteering at the shelter was shared in a letter was sent home to families about items that could be donated to help the shelter. A donation point is located outside of the CES library for students and parents to bring in items such as soap, clothes, and individually wrapped snacks. Please contact Mrs. Laura Anziano or Mrs. Becky Denney at 336-2232 if you would like to make a donation.

In September, Bradley County Schools hosted their second JamboREAD event to promote the Read 20 initiative. This was an evening of family reading time with flavor. Each elementary school was hosted by a local restaurant that offered discounted prices on dinner for families that attended and read with their child. We were fortunate to have several high school students from both Bradley Central and Walker Valley visit some of the restaurants dressed as their favorite book character or super hero and visit with the families. The evening was a huge success in promoting the importance of reading as well as encouraging families to spend time together.
