The GroundWorks Media Lab is a collaborative facility that supports the production, conversion, and editing of digital and analog media [see fig. 1]. Equipped with both Mac and Windows machines, the lab features DVD recorders, CD/DVD duplicators, video dubbing equipment, and hardware & software for video and audio creation and editing. Additionally, the entire library of Lynda.com software tutorials are available for use on lab computers.

GroundWorks services include the Recording Booth and the Poster Shop. The Recording Booth is a self-contained digital audio and video recording booth available for recording your voice or a single instrument [see fig. 2]. The Poster Shop offers high-quality printing of large-format color posters, with an emphasis on conference or academic poster printing.

The Multimedia Rooms are three high powered editing rooms available whenever the Duderstadt Center is open [see fig. 3].

Beyond providing a quiet working environment, the rooms have a number of extra features including Mac Pros with substantial RAM and processing power, high fidelity audio monitors, three displays, Blu-Ray burners, and keyboards labeled with Final Cut Pro shortcuts. You can even make a reservation when you need to render your video project, then lock the door behind you, eliminating the need to babysit the computer during the least-fun part of editing. Room reservability guarantees their availability, even when GroundWorks may be busy.

The Advanced Podcasting Room is an all-in-one solution for recording video podcasts [see fig. 4]. A teleprompter, HD video camera, touch screen, and drawing tablet (for annotation) will aid you in creating a professional looking podcast, ready for upload as soon as you stop recording. Training and tours of the Advanced Podcasting Room are available by appointment and take about 30 minutes. Contact [email protected] to arrange a visit.

Design Lab 1

Design Lab 1 is a home for collaboration and project development among students and faculty in design and performance disciplines at the University of Michigan [see fig. 4]. Staffed with advanced student consultants from diverse fields and experts from the Digital Media Commons, Design Lab 1 provides programmatic support for exploration and practical interaction across disciplines. With resources such as a large projection screen, electronics workbench, and a chroma screen, it is a favored location for class meetings and a gathering place for student organizations and projects [see fig. 5]. Design Lab 1 is also the home base for the Digital Media Commons’ grant-giving program, GROCS (Grants, Research Opportunities, and Collaborative Spaces).

Audio Studios

The Electronic Music Studios consist of two state-of-the-art audio research laboratories that function as composition, recording, and mixing studios.

Electronic Music Studio A is a flexible room equipped with a 16-channel API 1608 console, an array of outbard gear and software plugins, multiple displays, and a 5.1 surround sound monitoring setup, rendering it a perfect fit for electronic music composition, audio engineering, and video scoring [see fig. 8].

Electronic Music Studio B is a one-of-a-kind resource, boasting the world’s first analog, 7.1/8.0 surround console. Built upon a 32 channel API Vision console, this room is perfect for composition, audio editing, mixing, and mastering and contains an impressive set of onboard and outboard gear, software plugins, and multiple speakers [see fig. 9].

The Audio Studio is a world class audio laboratory and recording facility with resources intended to encourage experimentation, research, and development of skills and techniques in audio production [see fig. 10].

The space is equipped with an API Vision console and set up for full 5.1 surround sound mixing and listening. It includes 48 channels, 96 faders, 40 microphone pre-amps, 36 parametric EQ’s, 12 graphic EQ’s, and 24 compressors. In addition to these board features, the room is equipped with a large selection of microphones and outboard gear including compressors, equalizers and reverberation units. The Audio Studio consists of five rooms: the control room, main tracking room, two isolation booths, and an amp room [see fig. 11].

Workshops

Digital Media Commons

The Digital Media Commons Orientation is conducted Monday through Friday at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm by the GroundWorks consultant on duty. You don’t need to make an appointment – just come in at one of those times, and we’ll get you started!

Approximately 30 minutes in length, the orientation will introduce you to what’s available at the Digital Media Commons and provide basic training for the Recording Booth and Multimedia Rooms. During this time, you will have the opportunity to create a user account for reservations and key check-out, become acquainted with the hardware/software configurations, review policies and procedures, and meet our talented consultant staff.

We encourage groups of 8 or more to notify us in advance at [email protected] so we can better accommodate the needs of classes, research projects, and other groups seeking information about the Digital Media Commons’ resources.

The Digital Media Commons provides a number of workshops for users wishing to access and learn more about our advanced facilities and software. These workshops are hands-on in approach and cover a range of topics and spaces. For more information, including dates, times, and registration directions, please visit:
