Elements

Certain elements of a film opening are changed to adapt them for different audiences and genres, these are:

• Lighting: This can be low key (which would be used to create a scary/mysterious feel) or high key (which would be used to create a happy/upbeat feel).

• Music: This can be up beat (which could be used to show the positive feel of the film) or down beat (which could be used to build tension and/or a negative feel).

• Representation: This can be used for characters and the location, This can be positive (which could be used to make them appear a hero and the location to appear safe and welcoming) or negative (which could be used to make them appear a villain and the location to appear dangerous and cold).

Here are some examples of different genre film openings to show how these aspects have been applied to make them effective.
