Steps to Plant a Cool Plant

We went to the greenhouse. Only five people could go in at a time to keep the heat in. We were plant-

ing. Steps to plant a cool plant: first, fill your pot. The pot is made out of cow poo. It is food for the

plant. Scrape off the extra soil. Then poke a hole and put the plant in the hole. Water it. Then set it

down for about 3 weeks. Then you have a cool plant. Hope we go again. By Audrey Wine.

TORONTO URBAN STUDIES CENTRE/ GREENHOUSE VISIT

At the greenhouse, I was in the desert group so we learned about types of climates and types of plants.

There’re different types of plants. Some were soft, some were prickly, some were pointy and some did

not like to be touched. I never knew that there were cold deserts, and I did not know that millions of

years ago all deserts were filled with snow. By Haider Syed.

utiles.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND TERRY FOX WALK

The school year is off to a great start in the Physical and Health education department!! Our September unit was co-operative games and activities. Students have been learning routines, building their team work skills, set-ting goals for physical fitness and learing how to have fun while being safe in the gym and outdoors. In September, we highlighted ACTIVE PARTICI-PATION in the Physical Education program and many students who achieved success in this area signed our WALL OF FAME! In October we will be focusing on RESPECT FOR OURSEVES, OTHERS AND EQUIPMENT.

On Friday September 23, our school held our annual Terry Fox Run!! De-spite a few rain drops, it was a big success. A special thanks goes out to the students in Grade 4/5 who ran TWICE! Once with their Grade 1/2 bud-dy and once with their own class. Well done.

TRIP TO ADVENTURE VALLEY

Room 111’s October Trip to

Adventure Valley Nature Centre

On the trip to Adventure Valley,

we went into the dark forest and

built homes for our certain animal

group. We used sticks, leaves,

grass and dirt that were in the

forest to build the homes. The

animal groups were Bear, Robin,

Beaver and more. The Bear Group

used big sticks and put them

against a tree. The Robin Group

used sticks, leaves and dirt

to make it into a nest. The

Bear Group took green grass,

dried up leaves, and sticks

and leaned it against a log to

make a dam. After we were

done making our homes, we

showed them to the other

groups and went out of the

forest. By Cindy He.

ROOM 110 MS SOTIRAKOS

We went on four field trips so far this year. The first

field trip we went on was to Adventure Valley. We

saw alive and dead salmon there. We played games

and had lunch too. The next field trip we went on

was to the Hindu Temple. At the Hindu Temple we

learned about Diwali. Diwali is a Hindu holiday. At

the temple, we meditated for a while, then we left.

The last field trip we went on was the High Park Na-

ture Centre. At the Nature Centre we learned about

different trees and bugs. We also got a chance to go

to the Library. At the Library we got a bag and some

souvenirs.

In conclusion, those are the four field trips we went

on this year. The next field trip is going skating at

Dufferin Grove.

I went on 2 of the 3 field trips. The first was Adventure Valley. We saw a dead salmon, we saw deer and

we played games including squirrels and acorns. Next was the Hindu Temple. It looks like a castle and

there were wood carvings of gods all over. We also watched video of how it was made. We went upstairs to

see the real temple. The last one was the High Park Nature Centre. I did not go on that one. Oh yeah, we

also went to the library and saw Franklin.

3-D SELF PORTRAITS FOR ROOM 111

Room 111 did 3-D self-portraits for the class. A student writes how it was done.

In class, we made pictures out of tag board. So this is how we did it. We would each have a bag

of pastels and draw our hair and our eyes and our mouth and our shirt. When we were done, we

would get a piece of construction paper and trace our hands. When we were done that, we

would take another piece of construction paper that would be folded in half and would draw a

cover for your book and staple your hands to your portrait and staple the book to your hands.

Dewson Street Public School students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run to raise money and awareness for can-

cer research. Students in Room 110 took on the responsibility of sorting and counting all the money raised.

Students worked in small groups and learned to identify and describe different kinds of coins (nickel, dime, quarter,

loonie, toonie) and bills. Grade 1 students learned to sort coins into the appropriate piles. Students then practiced

counting forward by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's and 25's. Grade 2 students were also responsible for adding and recording in

their group the number of coins collected, and representing the monetary value of the coins/bills in both cents and

dollars.

My dog Finnly is a special dog! He is a Westhighland White Terrier. I got him when the last Iron Man movie came

out. His old owners named him Finnly. He had 6 or 7 homes before his forever home. But no one kept him. Our old dog

passed away so we got Finnly. If we didn’t my mom would just be crying and looking at bunch of Westie pictures. Once my dog

went to the park and it was raining. We ran and ran in the rain and it was a lot of fun. When I get home Finnly jumps on

me. He wags his tail because he is happy. He sleeps on my parents bed. Finnly loves playing with his balls when I throw it. He

is a part of the family.

In classroom 213, we have begun a project that puts the spotlight on kindness. We opened up a discussion on the top-

ic of kindness - what this means and how we can show it to others through actions. The students are also trying to complete a "Daily Kindness Challenge", whether that be playing

with someone who needs a friend, or using kind words through compliments. Throughout the day, the students have also enjoyed writing secret notes to one another, thanking them

for their kindness. Why are we doing this? According to Bella A.: "because it's a good feeling inside when you make people happy."

Room 315 has had a busy fall both academically and with our Experiential Education (EE) activities. This term EE has taken us to High Park for biology and ecology studies; to Adventure Valley for leadership training; and to Young People’s Theatre to watch Spirit Horse. Two of our favourite EE moments include feeding the chickadees and our night hike excursion both from our trip to Island School.

Academically, we have been working hard across Math, Language, Social Studies, French and Drama. In our Social Studies classes we spent a quite a bit of time doing inquiry-based learning about the Aboriginal Land Acknowledgement that the TDSB has decided to have read every morning on the announcements this year. Together as a class we formulated questions about the Land Acknowledgement and used these questions to guide our re-search, collecting and analyzing information to help answer our ques-tions. From our research, we created beautiful posters to communicate our findings and to help deepen our school community's understanding of the Land Acknowledgement and the First Nations identified in the Acknowledgement.

Room 102 experimenting with sinking and floating. The students "hypothesized", tested and recorded their results about the objects that sink and float in the classroom. The inquiry began with one of our "From 3 to 3" books titled Who Sank the Boat? The students used boats and animals at the water table to reenact the story and then went on to testing other classroom objects. We even went outside with our water table.
