Try to have an open mind

Apps can be addicting

Morrilton High SchoolMay 16, 2014

Being open minded is one of the best traits to have in my opinion for sev-eral reasons. One, it is just simply a better way to live. Instead of going about your

day wondering why people are the way they are just ac-cept the fact that they are different from you and they have their own ways. You have to train yourself to real-ize that there are many peo-ple in this world with many different beliefs and that is perfectly okay. Do not judge those people and get upset, just take it in and see the

positive things about it. Be-ing open minded is not that hard- you just have to accept things and be positive about life.

I truly believe that if everybody broadened their minds a little bit then this world would be a happier place. Never be that guy who makes fun of someone be-cause they are different.

On Sunday, April 27, tragedy struck as a tor-nado touched ground in some Arkansas towns.  The town that we were most con-cerned for was Vilonia and people were quick to send prayers and best wishes that

way.   With so many people trying to send hope to the citizens of Vilonia I was shocked when one rather in-sincere tweeter was brought to my attention.   This indi-vidual claimed to be more concerned about tests than for the lives lost and people injured.

Sure, final tests are important, but is it re-ally necessary to voice your opinion that they are more

important than lives on a social network? I think not.  It is people like this that prove how insincere some can be to others in times of need.   Even if you truly believe that something is more important than send-ing hope to those people af-fected by natural disasters it is still better to keep that opinion to yourself.

May 16th will be a very exciting day for many. For those of you who do not know, May 16th is grad-uation day. Although this day will be very exciting, it will also be very sad. I know that I am going to miss the class of 2014 more than any other senior class before them. I have grown up with all of them. I have played baseball with some of them, went to church with some of them my entire life, and developed some pretty great friendships with them along the way. Although I am proud of them for fi-nally making it, the fact that they are not going to be walking the hallways with me next year pains me to think about. It is going to be very different without seeing them every day. The class of 2014 is full of some of the greatest athletes Morrilton has ever seen, some of the brightest kids in the entire state, and some of the nicest people I have ever met. They have made my high school career a very fun and memorable one. I for one have never seen a class more tightly knit than theirs. It seems as if every one of them is best friends. That is a lesson that every class below them should learn. Your class should be the ones that you care about the most, they’re the ones you’re going end your high school days with. You should love your class

as if they were family, and that is one thing the class of 2014 did. When I think about them leaving it does make me sad, but at the same time I see everything they have in front of them. The majority of them are go-ing to college and are mov-ing on to bigger and better things in life. Therefore, I am happy for them. This all may sound like a sap-py story, but it’s all true. They have had an impact on every class at Morril-ton high school. Although the classes below them did not always get along with them, they still looked up to them. Whether or not we were fighting over some-thing as dumb as the spirit stick at pep rally, they were still the seniors and every-one still looked up to them. Next year will be different, but I have a feeling that if my class, the class of 2015, is anything at all like this year’s graduating class it’s going to be a great year! Usually when you write an editorial you are supposed to offer a solution to the problem you have presented. This time there is no solution. Although we all wish they could stay the seniors are going to gradu-ate and there is nothing we can do about it. All I have to say is I hope y’all make the most of your lives and achieve every goal you have set! Congratulations Class of 2014, you did it! You’ll definitely be missed. Just remember once a Devil Dog always a Devil Dog!

The day every high school student waits for is almost here: graduation. Even though graduation is a huge moment in a student’s life, it is the moments and memories made before it that mean the absolute world. It seems as if I spent my whole entire high school career waiting for my senior

year and graduation to get here, and now that it is finally here I wish it would slow down. If I could go back and redo everything, I would love more, laugh more, and worry less. I would spend more time with my friends making memories, and less time worrying over useless dra-ma that no one will remember in 10 years. To all the underclassmen, it is not necessary to remind the se-niors how many “last times” there are, because we are all well aware. It is depressing hearing things such as “This is your last prom” and “You only have one week left with your

friends.” My only word of advice is to not take your high school experience for granted. Do the things that you are “too scared” to do, because in the end you are go-ing to regret not doing them. Do not wish for time to fly by. Once the time is gone, it is gone and you cannot ever get it back. Also, spend as much time with your friends as possible. After graduation you will all go your separate ways and some you will never see again. In the end, just make the most out of your high school experience because you will only have one.

You may or may not have heard of her yet, but Iggy Azalea is the new girl to watch in the music industry! Just recently in April, she debuted her first studio album, The New Classic. As soon as the album dropped it went straight to number one on iTunes. Iggy has gradually made herself known through Youtube and modeling and now

it seems like she has finally made it. Her fans have been waiting patiently for this album and it’s finally here. Iggy talked about the album saying, “I wish I was a teenager in 1997, but with ‘The New Classic,’ I want younger generations to look back on what we’re doing now and say, ‘I wish I was a teenager in 2014.’ I come from an era of kids who are always being told that what we make is not classic. But my album says to people my age, ‘Don’t devalue that we can be culturally significant -- because we can be.’”

If you like upbeat rap music this album will be perfect for you. Personally, my favor-ite song off the album is ‘Fancy’. It’s really cool because it’s Iggy rapping and then Charlie XCX comes in with a way different sounding chorus. It has kind of a Gwen Stefani ‘Hollaback Girl’ vibe to it. ‘Fancy’ is definitely a song that will be stuck in your head all day. One thing that people are weary about is that she’s a white female. And it is true...you never really see white females at the top of the Hip-Hop/Rap

charts. But Iggy is definitely prov-ing some people wrong. When told about the gossip Iggy said, “Why is it that you can have The Rolling Stones, but a white rap-per is weird? The Rolling Stones were originally doing blues. This is not weird, this is like history repeating itself. When people say stuff like that about race, I just think you don’t really love music because you don’t know about music.” ‘The New Classic’ is out everywhere and I highly recom-mend anyone to buy it.

In my previous arti-cle, I wrote about the ever-so popular game that is Clash of Clans. Even though it is still at the top of the charts, another game is grasp-ing users at a quick pace.

2048 is not just another ordinary app in the Ap-pStore. As you combine numbers together to make larger ones you lose your-self in the game trying to create the sought after 2048 tile. Using numbers for a game does not sound like anything that could be fun since numbers bounce off of worksheets in school every day; however 2048 clings to you and doesn’t let you go. After your first defeat

you will find yourself long-ing for more and striving towards beating the game. Just like Clash of Clans, I never saw myself enjoying such a game. Again, I was dead wrong! After ONE DAY I was hooked on the game and cannot stop playing (besides check-ing my clan of course). 2048 is also a game of strat-egy. As you make each pair, more numbers add to your screen increasing your

awareness on your next move. This game is very addicting and will have you constantly on your phone draining your battery. Trust me, I know. So you might as well download the game and start playing, but don’t forget to bring your charger everywhere you go!

Humans have a very addicting personality. That’s what makes it easy for the app markets to make a very successful and popular app. Recently, the hottest down-load is Piano Tiles! The game consists of nothing more than simply touching the black tiles, and trying to avoid the white ones. People say that the game helps your hand eye coordination, and

helps you become quick with your reflexes. Although the game is very popular now, soon it will be forgotten. But don’t worry; there will be a new craze right on its tail. There have been plenty of games that have come and gone, such as Candy Crush, Flap-py Bird, Fun Run, and Giant Ball of Death. App makers will always find the perfect game to keep their company relevant. They know exactly how human nature works. They create frustrating games that sometimes drive people to insanity.

Would you call this technique brilliant, or men-acing? Causing people grief over not being able to avoid the white tiles, or not being able to fly a bird in between two pipes has done nothing but add on to other peoples worries. It is simply unnec-essary, and completely our own faults. Some people live, and die for “the love of the game”. Some people sit around all day and play these games, when they could be out looking for a job, or taking care of their kids. There is nothing wrong with simply enjoying a fun game, but don’t let yourself overlook important things because of it.

You may be won-dering, “What makes these

apps so addicting?” things like simply not being able to complete the task at hand, or getting so close to a new high score that you have to play it at least one more time. You can simply start playing for what seems to be a short period of time, and then next thing you know an hour has passed.

There is nothing wrong with apps, or games, but there is a problem when people let them control their lives. Its really not the cre-ators fault. There is no one to blame but yourself. Don’t get wrapped up in material-istic things that do not mat-ter. There are always bigger fish to fry. Or a better game to play J.

Track competes in conference meet

Morrilton Devil Dog baseball kicked of conference play on March 20 with a dou-ble-header against the Shiloh Christian Saints. The nerves got the best of the Dogs in this one. They lost both games 12-2. The dogs then traveled to Alma for their second confer-ence double-header against the Airedales. The Dogs rode the great pitching of John Cheek through 7 innings for a 4-3 victory. The Dogs fought hard in the second game, but couldn’t pull out a win. They lost 14-1. The Dogs then trav-eled to Pottsville for a non-conference game against the Apaches. This one was close all the way throughout, but the dogs came out on top win-

ning 4-2. The Dogs then host-ed the Greenbrier panthers in their third conference dou-ble-header. They lost a heart-breaker in the first game 6-5. In the second game they let the game slip away losing 11-6. The Dogs then took on cross town foes the Sacred Heart Rebels in another nonconfer-ence game. The Dogs cruised to a 7-1 victory in this game. Four their fourth conference double-header, the Dogs took on the Vilonia Eagles. With great pitching and excellent defensive play the Dogs won the first game 5-1. In the sec-ond game they struggled hit-ting the ball and lost 9-0. On senior night the Dogs hosted the Huntsville Eagles for their fifth conference double-head-er. They definitely sent the se-niors out with a bang winning the first game 11-5 and the second game 20-4.

The Morrilton track and field team visited Har-rison for the 5A west con-ference meet. Boys and girls competed in relays, discus, triple jump, and shot put.

Although I have only been in journalism for one year, I have greatly enjoyed my time in it. With a class full of such great people it has been impossible to not spend every day laughing and having fun. - Anna Adams

Althoughthisismyfirstyearinjournalism,iteasilybecameoneofmyfavoriteclasses.Theatmosphereisgreat.Weare constantly laughing, singing, and we never fail to have crazy conversations. And the jokes the staff makes about Sara at-tendance rate are pretty funny. And with the help of our amazing sponsor Mrs. Bratton, we’re able to put out a paper every month as well as having time to relax and have fun. My time with these amazing people known as the Journalism Family has beenincredibleandIwilldefinitelymisseveryoneinthestaff.(AlthoughIdowishwecouldhavewentlarping)-SherryLin

Journalism has proven to be one of my favorite classes of my senior year. And it’s not only because I barely have to write anything...(Yesitis.).Onaseriousnote,Ihaveenjoyedworkingwithmyfellowjournalistsandallthegoodtimeswehaveshared in class. I can’t believe I even wrote as much as I do, and I am kind of proud of myself for doing it! I will miss all the memories I have made in Journalism and the countless times I get to mess with Mrs. Bratton. She will miss me. She knows it. Deuces Journalism. -Reese Heidenreich

Journalism has played a huge part in my life over my high school career. I came into the class the second semester of my sophomore year as the new kid. All of the students in the class welcomed me with open arms and soon I was welcomed into the tight-knit group which was the Journalism Family. Everyone on the staff always got into the craziest situations, and we al-wayshadthefunniestconversations.Ofcourse,IhavetomentionJoshandJunebug(Chandler)becausetheysaidifIdidnotthey would get extremely angry. Even though everyone in the class was great, the best part of the class was our fearless leader Mrs. Bratton. She is one of the most sarcastic, hilarious and occasionally moody peopIe have ever met, but I would not have her any other way. If it was not for her pushing every single one of us on the advocate staff, we would not have a paper each and every month. Not only did Mrs. Bratton teach us how to create an actual newspaper, but she also taught us important life lessons that we will never forget. She has easily become my favorite teacher in all of Morrilton High School throughout my four years. I was so blessed to be able to be a part of the Journalism staff, and when I grow old and look back on my time at Morril-ton High School, I will be so proud and thankful I was a part of something so great. - Ryan Joyner
