The Desire to Live as ONESince I was a young child, I have been attracted to diversity and have considered it a positive thing. My first several years of life were spent in a small college town. The university had a large international student population. I was exposed to a variety of languages, foods, and customs.

I continue to seek regular opportunities to interact with those from backgrounds different than my own.

Therefore, when I learned that Southwood was going to use ONE by Deidra Riggs as the all church book study this fall, I was elated and immediately began reading the book. I was prepared to extend my efforts toward helping others and welcoming those different from myself.

What I wasn’t prepared for was how much this book really challenged and changed me. Each chapter presented ideas and issues that caused me to prayerfully reflect.

One aspect that impacted me was how the author stressed our task is to advocate for and love all people. This includes those who hold beliefs or perform actions that, because of our own views, may seem outrageous or malicious.

All people were created in God’s image. Our task is to work on understanding the current system and identifying ways to listen to one another so we can truly change things, not to focus on the condemnation of individuals or groups because of their beliefs or actions. Financial Many people fall on hard times financially throughout their lifetime. Helping a friend in financial need requires good judgment. It can complicate a friendship, so be careful with your words and actions.

f Listen without judgment—provide emotional support. Be cautious about offering advice.

f If they ask for money, consider if you can personally afford it. If so, make it a gift rather than a loan, so no repayment is expected.

f Offer help that doesn’t involve money—repairs, errands, meals, or child care.

Financial difficulties can also cause isolation and embarrassment—arrange some social outings that are free.

FinancialInformation

` Taking care of your money is only 20% head knowledge; the other 80% is behavior. The best way to change the behaviors is to sit with your family and work through it together.

` God expects you to make wise choices with what He has given you—that is your responsibility.

Scriptures ` Ecclesiastes 5:10—Those who love money

will never have enough.

` Matthew 6:31-34—Do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’

` Philippians 4:19—God will supply every need according to his riches.

` Matthew 6:26—God provides for the birds of the air and will provide for you.

` Matthew 24:46–47—God wants us to be faithful with our money.

PrayerHeavenly Father, I bring my money to you; help me to use it as you see is right. Help me not to be greedy with it, thinking I need it more than others. Help me be generous with what you have given me so that I may help those in need. Teach me to be a good steward of what you have entrusted to me and help me to remember that all that I have is yours. Amen.
